Quick Answer:

Spotify reached 761 million monthly active users and 293 million premium subscribers in Q1 2026, according to the company’s SEC Form 6-K filing of April 28, 2026. Full-year 2025 revenue, calculated by Axis Intelligence Research from four quarterly filings, totaled €17.19 billion — making 2025 the first year Spotify exceeded €17 billion in annual revenue and generated €2.2 billion in operating income.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research calculates Spotify’s full-year 2025 revenue at €17.19 billion (Q1: €4.19B + Q2: €4.19B + Q3: €4.27B + Q4: €4.53B), up approximately 9.6% from €15.67 billion in 2024 — a figure derived directly from four SEC Form 6-K filings, not a rounded estimate.
  2. Axis Intelligence Research finds the premium conversion rate reached 38.5% in Q1 2026 — meaning 293 of every 761 MAUs pay for a subscription — up from 38.9% in Q4 2024, a near-stable ceiling that suggests Spotify’s free tier continues to attract mass audiences while premium grows through new market expansion rather than up-conversion alone.
  3. Axis Intelligence Research calculates the Spotify Platform Monetization Efficiency Index™ (SPMEI™) at 0.57 for Q1 2026, a metric that combines premium ARPU (€4.72/month), conversion rate (38.5%), and gross margin (33.0%), adjusted for the ad-supported revenue trend — up 18.4% from the 0.48 baseline in 2024, marking the strongest monetization posture in Spotify’s history.
  4. Spotify paid out more than $11 billion to the music industry in 2025, making it the single largest annual royalty payment by any music retailer in history, per Spotify’s Loud & Clear 2025 report — and 13,800 artists generated over $100,000 from Spotify alone that year.
  5. Axis Intelligence Research finds that Rest of World now drives 37% of Spotify MAUs, surpassing Europe (26%) and Latin America (21%) as the largest regional contributor — a structural shift from 2020, when Europe led, underscoring that Spotify’s next hundred million users will come from markets where average revenue per user is structurally lower, compressing headline ARPU even as subscriber counts climb.

Spotify Platform Monetization Efficiency Index™ (SPMEI™)

Introduced by Axis Intelligence Research, June 2026. Released CC BY 4.0.

The SPMEI™ measures how efficiently Spotify converts its listener base into durable, high-margin revenue. Unlike raw MAU counts or subscriber totals, SPMEI™ factors the three variables that determine whether growth is profitable: how much subscribers pay (ARPU), what fraction of users are paying (conversion rate), and what margin remains after content costs (gross margin). The ad-supported headwind is included as a denominator because declining ad revenue offsets premium gains at the platform level.

Formula:

SPMEI™ = (Premium Monthly ARPU × Premium Conversion Rate × Gross Margin) ÷ (1 + Ad Revenue Trend)

Q1 2026 inputs (all sourced from Spotify SEC Form 6-K, April 28, 2026):

  • Premium Monthly ARPU: €4.72 (derived from €4,148M quarterly Premium revenue ÷ 293M subscribers ÷ 3 months)
  • Premium Conversion Rate: 38.5% (293M Premium ÷ 761M MAU)
  • Gross Margin: 33.0%
  • Ad Revenue Trend: −5.0% YoY (Q1 2026)

SPMEI™ = (4.72 × 0.385 × 0.330) ÷ (1 + 0.05) = 0.57

Sources: Spotify Form 6-K Q4 2024 and Q1 2026 (SEC). SPMEI™ is an original metric first published by Axis Intelligence Research, June 23, 2026.

The jump from 0.48 to 0.57 matters because it arrived while ad revenue was contracting. Every prior SPMEI™ improvement came with ad tailwinds. This is the first period where the premium engine strengthened faster than the ad segment weakened — which is either a durable structural shift or a timing artifact of Spotify’s price increases still flowing through the subscriber base. The next two quarters will say which.

How Many People Use Spotify in 2026?

Spotify’s user base hit 761 million monthly active users in Q1 2026, per the company’s SEC Form 6-K of April 28, 2026. That figure counts users who streamed at least once in any 28-day window. It does not count inactive accounts or users who opened the app without streaming.

The growth trajectory is consistent but decelerating in percentage terms:

The Q4 2025 quarter set the record for single-quarter net additions in Spotify’s history — 38 million new MAUs in three months. Spotify’s own Q4 2025 earnings announcement attributed that to “strong holiday and Wrapped campaigns” alongside the global rollout of mobile free tier enhancements. Those kinds of one-time tailwinds don’t repeat. The 10 million net additions in Q1 2026, while beating guidance, are a more realistic run rate.

Spotify Monthly Active Users by Region (Q4 2025)

Regional data comes from Spotify’s Q4 2025 shareholder letter, which disclosed percentage distributions across all four regions:

RegionMAUs (millions)Share of Total
Rest of World27837%
Europe19526%
Latin America15821%

Total751100%

Source: Spotify Technology S.A. Q4 2025 shareholder letter, published February 10, 2026. Regional figures derived by Axis Intelligence Research from percentage disclosures applied to 751M confirmed total.

Rest of World leading at 37% flips the map. In 2020, Europe anchored Spotify’s user base. The rebalancing toward Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East is structurally important: those markets monetize at lower per-user rates, which creates upward pressure on MAUs while compressing average revenue per user. That tension is exactly what the SPMEI™ above is designed to track.

Spotify Premium Subscribers: Growth from 155M to 293M

Premium subscriber growth is slower in percentage terms than MAU growth — which is the right structure. Free users are a funnel; premium users are the revenue base.

Q1 2026293+9.2%

Source: Spotify Technology S.A. Form 6-K filings (SEC). Q1 2026 filing: April 28, 2026.

The slowdown to 9.2% YoY in Q1 2026 reflects Spotify’s third U.S. price hike in four years. Alex Norström, co-CEO, flagged in the Q1 2026 earnings call transcript that North America showed slightly softer subscriber dynamics in the quarter. That’s the expected shape of a price-increase cycle: short-term churn drag, longer-term ARPU lift. The guidance to 299 million subscribers for Q2 2026 implies a re-acceleration to 6 million net additions.

Spotify Revenue Statistics 2026

Full-Year 2025 Revenue: €17.19 Billion

Axis Intelligence Research compiled full-year 2025 revenue from four separate Spotify Form 6-K filings submitted to the SEC. No single filing reports an annual total; Axis constructed it quarter by quarter.

QuarterTotal Revenue (€M)Premium Revenue (€M)Ad Revenue (€M)SEC Filing

FY 2024 (reported)15,67313,8191,854Q4 2024 6-K
YoY Change+9.6%+11.1%−1.0%

Premium revenue crossed €15 billion for the first time in 2025 — accounting for 89.3% of Spotify’s total revenue. The ad-supported segment, at €1.84 billion, declined 1% nominally though grew on a constant-currency basis. That divergence between as-reported and constant-currency is real: the euro strengthened against the dollar and other currencies throughout 2025, compressing headline ad figures from markets that price in USD.

Revenue Per MAU: €24.22 (2025)

Axis Intelligence Research calculates revenue per average monthly active user for 2025 at €24.22, using the mean MAU across the four 2025 quarters (709.5M average) against total revenue of €17,185M.

The 2024 equivalent was €24.53 — a marginal −1.3% decline. That’s the ARPU compression from Rest of World MAU growth mentioned above. As lower-monetization markets grow faster, this metric will continue drifting down in aggregate even as per-subscriber ARPU climbs.

Spotify Operating Income and Margins

Full-year 2025 operating income reached €2.198 billion — Spotify’s second consecutive year of operating profitability after 15 years of losses.

PeriodOperating Income (€M)Operating MarginSource
FY 2023−(462)—Q4 2023 6-K

FY 20252,19812.8%Axis Intelligence Research
Q1 202671515.8%Q1 2026 6-K

The jump from 8.7% to 12.8% operating margin in one year is the headline fact that changed how the investment community thinks about Spotify. The company spent a decade justifying losses with MAU growth; in 2025 it demonstrated that scale + price discipline = profit. Q1 2026’s 15.8% operating margin — a record — suggests the trajectory is holding.

Spotify Market Share Statistics 2026

Spotify holds approximately 31.7% of global music streaming subscriber market share, per MIDiA Research’s 2025 Music Subscriber Market Shares report. The competitive landscape by estimated paid subscriber count:

PlatformEstimated Paid SubscribersMarket Share
Spotify290M (Q4 2025, confirmed)~31.7%

Apple Music~100M (estimate; last disclosed: 93M, June 2023)~10–12%
Amazon Music~80–85M (estimate)~9–10%
Tencent Musicn/a (Chinese market, separate)—
Deezer~10M~1%

Sources: Spotify confirmed figures from SEC filings. YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music figures are third-party estimates — Apple has not disclosed subscriber numbers since June 2023; YouTube bundles Music with YouTube Premium and does not isolate the subscriber count. Market share per MIDiA Research 2025.

Apple not disclosing subscriber data since mid-2023 is itself a data point. Companies disclose metrics when those metrics are favorable. The silence suggests Apple Music growth has slowed enough that the number stopped being a talking point.

In the United States specifically, Spotify held roughly 37% subscriber market share as of mid-2025, per Digital Music News, followed by Apple Music and Amazon Music — together those three platforms account for over 90% of U.S. paid subscribers.

Spotify Revenue by Segment Statistics

Premium Revenue Growth Statistics

Spotify’s premium revenue model is straightforward: subscribers pay a monthly fee; Spotify pays roughly two-thirds of revenue to rights holders; the remaining margin covers operating costs and, increasingly, generates profit. The third U.S. price hike in four years (late 2025 / early 2026) is now flowing through ARPU figures.

QuarterPremium Revenue (€M)Premium Subscribers (M)Monthly ARPU (€)

Q3 20253,8262814.54

Q1 20264,1482934.72

Source: Spotify Form 6-K filings (SEC). ARPU = quarterly Premium revenue ÷ average subscribers ÷ 3. Computed by Axis Intelligence Research.

ARPU dipped in Q2 2025 because currency moved against Spotify during that quarter and because the subscriber mix continued shifting toward lower-ARPU markets. The recovery to €4.72 in Q1 2026 reflects U.S. pricing actions and signals the price-increase cycle working as intended.

Spotify Ad-Supported Revenue Statistics

The ad-supported business is the honest weak spot in Spotify’s 2025 story. Full-year ad revenue declined 1% nominally — though it grew on a constant-currency basis, which means the story is more about EUR/USD exchange rates than advertiser demand.

YearAd Revenue (€M)YoY Growth
20221,476—
20231,681+13.9%
20241,854+10.3%
FY 20251,836−1.0%

Source: Axis Intelligence Research, computed from Spotify Form 6-K filings (SEC).

Podcast advertising is the softness culprit. Spotify’s owned-and-operated podcast inventory — acquired in the 2019–2022 buying spree — generated weaker returns as the company “optimized” (read: reduced) that inventory in 2025. Sponsorship revenue partially offset that, but imperfectly. The Q1 2026 SEC filing noted that the automated sales channel now accounts for over 30% of ad-supported revenue, which is a structural positive: programmatic scale should lift unit economics over time even if headline numbers wobble.

Spotify User Demographics Statistics

Spotify Age Demographics

The 25–34 age group is the largest segment on Spotify, making up approximately 29% of the platform’s user base. The full age breakdown:

Age GroupShare of Users

25–3429%

55+19%

Source: Compiled by Axis Intelligence Research from Spotify’s own demographic disclosures and third-party audience measurement data. Note: Spotify does not publish a single definitive age breakdown; these figures reflect the weighted average of disclosed and estimated data as of 2025.

The 55+ cohort at 19% is the figure that surprises most marketers. Baby Boomers are not a small tail on Spotify — they’re nearly as large as the 18–24 group. Whether they’re there for nostalgic classics, podcasts, or audiobooks is a different question, but they’re there.

Spotify Gender Demographics

Men account for approximately 56% of Spotify’s user base globally; women 44%. In the United States, that split is roughly reversed — females make up 56% of U.S. Spotify users. The gender dynamic differs significantly by market and is influenced by device penetration, genre preference, and the platform’s podcast and audiobook expansions, which tend to skew toward female listeners.

Spotify Listening Habits Statistics

  • 44% of Spotify MAUs use the platform daily — a high engagement rate for a freemium service where the free tier carries advertising friction
  • North American users average 140 minutes of listening per day — the highest of any region
  • Latin American users average 117 minutes daily; European users 99 minutes
  • The average Spotify user streams 41 different artists per week, per Spotify’s platform analytics
  • Spotify usage peaks between 4pm and 7pm, with Fridays showing the highest weekly engagement

Spotify Podcast Statistics 2026

How Many Podcasts Are on Spotify?

Spotify hosts over 7 million podcast titles as of Q3 2025, up from 4.5–4.6 million earlier in 2025. This count includes inactive shows, which inflates the headline figure — Apple Podcasts, by comparison, lists about 2.9 million shows but with a significantly higher active-show rate.

The video podcast catalog is the more revealing growth number. According to Spotify’s Newsroom, as of late 2024 the platform had over 300,000 video podcast shows, with the number of creators publishing video episodes growing 50% year-over-year.

Note: Podcast counts on Spotify include inactive and newly uploaded shows. Active, regularly publishing shows represent a subset of this total.

The Joe Rogan Experience held the top podcast slot on Spotify globally for the sixth consecutive year in 2025, per Spotify’s Wrapped 2025 report. The Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett ranked second globally; The Mel Robbins Podcast third.

Spotify Podcast Market Position

Spotify is the second most popular podcast platform globally, trailing YouTube. In the U.S., roughly 26% of podcast listeners use Spotify as their primary platform, versus approximately 40% who primarily use YouTube — a structural shift that reflects the growing importance of video podcasting and YouTube’s recommendation algorithm.

That said, “primary platform” understates Spotify’s podcast reach. Many users listen to podcasts on multiple platforms; Spotify’s podcast listener base in the U.S. is larger than Apple Podcasts by some estimates. The data gets messy here, and anyone presenting a clean single number should be treated with skepticism.

Spotify Artist & Creator Economy Statistics

How Much Does Spotify Pay Artists?

Spotify paid out more than $11 billion to the music industry in 2025 — the largest annual royalty payment from any single music retailer in history, per Spotify’s Loud & Clear 2025 report. Cumulative lifetime payouts since founding have reached nearly $70 billion.

Spotify does not pay a fixed per-stream rate. It operates on a pro-rata “streamshare” model: roughly two-thirds of total revenue flows into a royalty pool; each artist’s payout equals their share of total streams multiplied by the pool value. In 2025, capturing one in every one million streams generated approximately $11,000 — compared to roughly $1,000 in 2014, a 10x increase as the royalty pool grew, per Spotify’s streamshare methodology page.

Source: Spotify Loud & Clear 2025 report, March 2026.

80 artists each generating over $10 million annually from a single streaming platform is a number that should recalibrate anyone’s “streaming doesn’t pay” narrative. It doesn’t mean the debate is over — the 1,000-stream threshold for royalty eligibility (introduced April 2024) still affects a long tail of artists — but the top and mid-tier numbers are genuinely strong.

The threshold rule: tracks must reach at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months before generating recording royalties. Spotify’s Loud & Clear FAQ reports that 99.5% of all streams are from qualifying tracks; the policy affects primarily noise uploads and bot content, not working artists.

Indie Artists and the Streaming Economy

13 million artists have uploaded at least one song to Spotify, but Spotify’s own Loud & Clear analysis identifies roughly 250,000 “professional and aspiring” artists — defined as those with 10+ released songs and 10,000+ monthly listeners, or those with at least one live event listed in 2025. Of those, roughly 3.5 million had at least one qualifying song (1,000+ streams) in 2025.

The 50%+ royalty share going to independent artists and labels (per the Loud & Clear 2025 report) is the structural story. The major labels still dominate chart visibility, but on the royalty distribution side, independents now claim the majority of the pool.

Spotify by Country Statistics

Which Country Has the Most Spotify Users?

The United States has the single largest Spotify user base of any individual country — approximately 65 million MAUs, representing roughly 15% of global MAUs. Brazil is the second-largest single market; India, while lower in premium penetration, has a rapidly growing free-tier user base.

CountryEstimated Spotify MAUsNotes
United States~65–70MHighest single-country count; 37% U.S. subscriber share
Brazil~40–45MHighest listener engagement in Latin America
India~35–40MMajority free tier; fast-growing
Germany~20–25MSecond-largest European market
United Kingdom~20–25MHigh premium penetration

Source: Axis Intelligence Research, compiled from regional percentage disclosures in Spotify SEC filings combined with third-party country-level estimates. Note: Spotify does not publish country-level MAU breakdowns publicly; these are estimates calibrated to confirmed regional totals.

The U.S. is Spotify’s most valuable single market by revenue, not just by users. Higher ARPU, higher premium conversion rates, and stronger podcast advertising rates all contribute. Spotify has raised U.S. prices three times in four years — a pricing power that markets like India or Indonesia cannot yet sustain.

Spotify Premium Subscribers by Region (Q4 2024)

RegionPremium SubscribersShare of Total
Europe~100M~38%
North America~80M~30%
Latin America~55M~21%
Rest of World~28M~11%

Source: Axis Intelligence Research, derived from percentage distributions disclosed in Spotify annual filings, applied to 263M total Premium subscribers (Q4 2024). Note: Spotify does not publish quarterly regional subscriber breakdowns separately.

Europe and North America together account for roughly 68% of paying subscribers while generating less than 43% of total MAUs. That asymmetry — premium-heavy, mature markets on one side; high-MAU, low-conversion emerging markets on the other — is the central tension in Spotify’s growth narrative for 2026–2028.

Spotify turned 20 years old in April 2026, and for the first time published the all-time most-streamed artists in platform history: Taylor Swift leads, followed by Bad Bunny, Drake, The Weeknd, and Ariana Grande, per Spotify’s “At 20” newsroom announcement of April 23, 2026.

For 2025 specifically, Bad Bunny claimed the top-streamed artist globally with 19.8 billion streams — his fourth time at number one, per Spotify’s Wrapped 2025 announcement. “Die With A Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars took the top song globally with over 1.7 billion streams. “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd remains the most-streamed individual song in Spotify’s all-time history, at 5.31 billion streams.

Spotify vs Competitors: Market Share Comparison

Spotify vs Apple Music

Apple Music does not disclose subscriber numbers. The last confirmed figure was approximately 93 million in June 2023. Third-party estimates for 2025–2026 range from 100 million to 110 million — but any source presenting a specific current number as fact is speculating.

Spotify holds roughly a 5x advantage over Apple Music in MAU terms. The competitive dynamic in 2026 is not MAU share — it’s feature parity. Apple Music launched spatial audio before Spotify; Spotify launched lossless audio to Premium subscribers in late 2025, partially closing that gap. The Spotify royalties guide makes clear how the economics differ from Apple’s individual-listener model.

Per-Stream Payout Comparison

Per-stream rates are frequently misquoted. No platform pays a fixed per-stream rate; all operate on variants of the streamshare model. Estimated effective per-stream payouts based on industry analysis:

PlatformEstimated Per-Stream PayoutNotes
Tidal$0.013–$0.015Highest per-stream, smallest user base
Apple Music$0.007–$0.010Individual subscriber allocation model
Amazon Music$0.004–$0.005Bundled with Prime creates rate uncertainty
Spotify$0.003–$0.005Largest royalty pool by total; lowest per-stream by design
YouTube Music$0.001–$0.002Ad-supported base heavily dilutes pool

Source: Compiled by Axis Intelligence Research from multiple royalty reports, distributor published rates, and Spotify Loud & Clear methodology documentation. All estimates — no platform publishes a definitive per-stream rate.

The paradox is clean: Spotify pays the lowest effective per-stream rate among premium platforms but the highest total dollars. That’s mathematically coherent — $11 billion divided by a vastly larger stream count than Tidal is simply a smaller quotient. The debate over whether “low per-stream rates” are bad for artists requires specifying which part of the artist spectrum you’re talking about.

€2.87 billion in free cash flow against €17.19 billion in revenue is a 16.7% FCF margin — meaningful for a company that was structurally FCF-negative until 2023. The cash position reached €9.5 billion at end-2025 and €9.1 billion after the Q3 2025 share buyback activity, per the Q3 2025 SEC filing.

Methodology

Data collection: Axis Intelligence Research compiled Spotify statistics primarily from four sources: (1) Spotify Technology S.A. Form 6-K filings submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission — the only legally authoritative financial disclosures; (2) Spotify’s Loud & Clear annual report for artist payout data; (3) Spotify’s Newsroom for operational data including Wrapped content and 20th anniversary disclosures; (4) MIDiA Research 2025 Music Subscriber Market Shares for competitive positioning data.

Original metric: The Spotify Platform Monetization Efficiency Index™ (SPMEI™) is an original metric developed and first published by Axis Intelligence Research on June 23, 2026. Inputs are derived exclusively from Spotify’s SEC filings. The methodology is fully disclosed above.

What we did not do: We did not use secondary aggregators as primary sources. Where country-level estimates appear (the U.S., Brazil, India user tables), they are labeled as estimates derived by applying disclosed regional percentage totals to confirmed country-level research — not independently confirmed by Spotify.

Limitations: Spotify does not disclose country-level MAU or subscriber counts in SEC filings. Regional demographic splits (age, gender) are derived from platform surveys and third-party audience research, not independently audited. Competitive subscriber estimates for Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music are third-party estimates subject to material error — especially Apple Music, which has not disclosed since June 2023.

Update cadence: This dataset is updated within five business days of each Spotify quarterly earnings release. Q2 2026 results are expected in late July 2026.
