Quick answer:

A business day is a weekday that is not a holiday. Axis Intelligence Research counts 250 business days in 2026 on the U.S. federal (OPM) calendar and 251 on the Federal Reserve Bank calendar. The one-day gap is July 3, 2026: federal offices close, Reserve Banks stay open. Use the calculator above to count business days between two dates or to add business days to any date.

What does this business day calculator do?

It answers the two questions people actually bring to a calendar: how many business days sit between two dates, and what date lands N business days from a start date. Pick one of three holiday calendars — U.S. federal (OPM), U.S. banking (Federal Reserve Banks), or weekends only — then add your own closures and change the workweek if your team works Saturdays or a Sunday-to-Thursday schedule. Every result lists the holidays it skipped, so you can check the answer instead of trusting it. A share button copies a link that reopens the exact calculation.

How do you calculate business days between two dates?

Start at the day after the start date. Walk forward one calendar day at a time to the end date. Count a day only if it falls on a workday and is not an observed holiday.

That’s the whole formula:

Business days = calendar days in the span − non-workdays − observed holidays that land on workdays

By default, the calculator excludes the start date and includes the end date. That matches how deadlines are usually read: if a notice arrives Monday and the reply is due “within 5 business days,” day 1 is Tuesday and day 5 is the following Monday (assuming no holiday in between). Both boxes can be ticked or unticked when a contract defines the count differently.

How do you add business days to a date?

The start date is day 0. The calculator steps forward (or backward, with a negative number) and counts only business days until it reaches N. The 10-business-day chip is the most common use: invoices, return windows, HR notice periods.

What does “3 to 5 business days” mean?

It means the third through fifth business day after the order or request, never counting weekends or the day it was placed. A holiday inside the window pushes the date out by one more day. Enter the order date and use the +3 and +5 chips to see the exact window.

Which holidays does the calculator skip?

The federal calendar follows the 11 legal public holidays set by 5 U.S.C. 6103 and the dates published by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, checked on October 3, 2026.

U.S. federal holidays 2027 (OPM)

Three 2027 holidays fall on a weekend, so OPM moves them: Juneteenth to Friday, June 18; Independence Day to Monday, July 5; Christmas to Friday, December 24. And New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so OPM observes it on Friday, December 31, 2027 — a 2028 holiday that lands in 2027. The calculator handles that cross-year shift automatically.

Why are bank business days different from federal business days?

Because the two calendars treat Saturday holidays differently. OPM moves a Saturday holiday to the preceding Friday for most federal employees, under 5 U.S.C. 6103(b). The Federal Reserve’s K.8 schedule does not: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, Reserve Banks and Branches stay open the preceding Friday. Both calendars move a Sunday holiday to Monday.

That difference is invisible most years and expensive in a few. The Fed lists four Fridays when Reserve Banks open while the Board of Governors closes: July 3, 2026; June 18, 2027; December 24, 2027; and December 31, 2027.

2027 is the year to watch. According to Axis Intelligence Research, the bank calendar has three more business days than the federal calendar in 2027 — the widest gap of the three years. A payment team that schedules settlement off an HR holiday list will treat three open banking days as closed.

The 2028 figures follow the same rule: OPM’s Friday, November 10, 2028 (Veterans Day falls on a Saturday) is a federal holiday but a banking business day, and New Year’s Day 2028 has already been observed in 2027 on the federal side.

What is the Business Day Yield?

The Business Day Yield (BDY) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric: the share of calendar days in a span that are business days.

BDY = business days ÷ calendar days × 100

It turns “how long will this really take” into one number. For full-year 2026, the federal calendar gives 250 ÷ 365 = 68.5%; the bank calendar gives 251 ÷ 365 = 68.8%. For the rest of 2026 measured from October 3, the federal calendar holds 60 business days across 89 calendar days — a BDY of 67.4% — because four holidays (Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas) sit inside that stretch.

A lower BDY means each business day costs more calendar time. That’s why a “10 business day” turnaround quoted in late November runs longer on the wall calendar than the same promise made in March. The calculator shows the BDY for every result.

Limitations

The calculator counts whole days, not hours; a request received at 4:59 p.m. is treated like one received at 9 a.m. It does not include Inauguration Day, which 5 U.S.C. 6103(c) grants only to federal employees in the Washington, D.C., area. It does not cover state holidays (Cesar Chavez Day, Patriots’ Day, Mardi Gras), stock-exchange closures, or one-off closures by executive order — add those in “Extra days off.” Courts often apply their own rules for counting deadlines, including how a deadline that lands on a closed day rolls forward; check the governing rule before relying on any calculator for a filing. Holidays are generated by statute for 1990–2040, with Juneteenth applied from 2021.

How it works

Holiday dates are not hard-coded. The JavaScript engine rebuilds each year’s holidays from the rules in 5 U.S.C. 6103(a) — fixed dates (January 1, June 19, July 4, November 11, December 25) and nth-weekday rules (third Monday of January and February, last Monday of May, first Monday of September, second Monday of October, fourth Thursday of November). It then applies the observance rule of the selected calendar: OPM moves Saturday holidays to Friday and Sunday holidays to Monday; the Federal Reserve calendar moves only Sunday holidays.

Axis Intelligence Research tested the engine’s output against OPM’s published schedules for 2026 through 2030 and against the Federal Reserve’s K.8 table, as retrieved on October 3, 2026. All five OPM years matched date for date. Calculations run entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent to a server.

Data freshness

Holiday rules and dates last verified: October 3, 2026, against OPM’s Federal Holidays page and the Federal Reserve’s K.8 schedule (last updated July 8, 2026). Next review: when either source changes, when Congress adds a federal holiday, or by January 15, 2027 — whichever comes first.

Business day calculator FAQ

Is Saturday a business day?

Not on the default setting. Tick “Sat” under Workdays if your business operates Saturdays.

How many business days are left in 2026?

Counting from Saturday, October 3, 2026 through December 31, 2026, the federal calendar has 60 business days. Change the start date to today in the calculator for a live count.

Are banks open on July 3, 2026?

Federal Reserve Banks are open on Friday, July 3, 2026, according to the Federal Reserve’s K.8 schedule; federal offices following OPM are closed. Your own bank may set its own branch hours.

Is Christmas Eve 2026 a business day?

December 24 is not a federal holiday under 5 U.S.C. 6103. A separate executive order would be required to close federal offices; add it under “Extra days off” if your employer closes.

Does “10 business days” include the day I submit?

Usually not. The day of submission is day 0 and the next business day is day 1, which is how this calculator counts by default.
