Quick Answer

As of March 2026, 167 million Americans — 58% of the 12+ population — listen to podcasts every month, an all-time high per Edison Research’s Infinite Dial 2026. Globally, 619.2 million people tune in monthly. The US podcast advertising market reached $2.862 billion in 2025 (confirmed IAB/PwC, April 2026), with the global market estimated above $5 billion. YouTube now edges Spotify as the most-used platform, and for the first time, video podcast consumption has surpassed audio-only consumption in Edison Podcast Metrics.

5 Key Findings

  1. 58% of Americans now listen to podcasts monthly — as of January 2026, 167 million people aged 12 and older are monthly podcast consumers, the first time this figure has surpassed the majority of US adults, per Edison Research at SSRS’s Infinite Dial 2026 (March 2026).
  2. US podcast ad revenue hit $2.862 billion in 2025, up 17.6% year-over-year, per the IAB and PwC 2025 Internet Advertising Revenue Report (April 2026). The IAB forecasts a further 9.6% gain in 2026.
  3. YouTube has overtaken Spotify as the most-used podcast platform: 37% of weekly podcast consumers selected YouTube as their primary platform in 2026, up from 31% two years ago, according to Edison Research’s Podcast Consumer 2026 study.
  4. For the first time, video podcast consumption outpaced audio-only listening in Edison Podcast Metrics. Among Americans who have ever consumed a podcast, 57% report doing both — only 21% are audio-only consumers.
  5. Americans spend 812 million hours weekly consuming podcasts — a 5% rise in just twelve months, representing nearly four times the total US podcast listening time compared to a decade ago, per Edison Research.

Axis Intelligence Research: Podcast Monetization Efficiency Index (PMEI) 2026

Every podcast stats page publishes listener counts and ad revenue. None of them place those two numbers in the same ratio. Axis Intelligence Research’s Podcast Monetization Efficiency Index (PMEI) does exactly that.

PMEI Formula (CC BY 4.0):

PMEI = (Annual Ad Revenue in USD) ÷ (Monthly Listeners × Average Weekly Hours × 52) × 1,000 Unit: USD per 1,000 listener-hours

This metric captures how efficiently a podcast market converts audience attention into advertising dollars. A high PMEI means advertisers are paying more per hour of actual listening; a low PMEI means attention is abundant but monetization infrastructure (ad networks, targeting, programmatic pipelines) is immature.

Axis Intelligence Research calculates the following PMEI figures for 2026, using confirmed IAB/PwC 2025 podcast ad revenue data and Edison Research Infinite Dial 2026 listener figures:

MarketAnnual Ad RevenueMonthly ListenersAvg Weekly HoursAnnual Listener-HoursPMEI
United States$2.862B (IAB/PwC)167M (Edison)7.0h (Edison)60.8B$47.08

United Kingdom~$148M (est.)18.3M (SQ Magazine)6.2h (est.)5.9B$25.12

Sources: IAB/PwC 2025 Internet Advertising Revenue Report (April 2026); Edison Research Infinite Dial 2026 (March 2026). UK ad revenue estimated using Searchlab’s per-capita figure of $8.10/listener/year (March 2026). PMEI is an original metric calculated by Axis Intelligence Research; no publisher states this figure. CC BY 4.0.

The US PMEI of $47.08 is 1.67× the global average of $28.23. That gap is the most concise statement of the opportunity gap: the US represents 27.0% of global monthly listeners but accounts for 57.2% of global podcast ad revenue. Every percentage point of audience outside the US is monetizing at roughly half the rate. The structural reasons — programmatic maturity, IAB measurement standards, host-read market depth — are well understood. The numbers have never been assembled this way before.

How Many People Listen to Podcasts? Global Listener Statistics

The short answer is 619.2 million per month in 2026. The longer answer requires separating what’s measured from what’s projected — and acknowledging that the two primary bodies tracking this figure don’t fully agree.

Edison Research’s Infinite Dial 2026, released March 12, 2026 from a January 2026 survey of 2,050 Americans aged 12 and older, finds 58% of the US population (167 million people) are monthly podcast consumers. That’s the hardest number in the industry: a probability-sampled national survey. By contrast, global listener estimates are extrapolations, and the ranges matter. The 619.2 million figure is a 2026 projection from DemandSage based on 2024 actuals of 546.7 million and a 6.83% year-over-year growth rate. Other trackers peg the figure higher: a Searchlab compilation citing Edison, Spotify, and PwC puts global listeners at 672 million for 2026.

Axis Intelligence Research uses 619.2 million as the conservative baseline for all calculations in this dataset, noting that the 672 million figure likely includes estimates for markets where survey-based measurement does not exist.

The growth curve deserves scrutiny. The 19.7% spike in 2021 reflects pandemic-driven content consumption. The subsequent deceleration to 6–7% is not failure — it’s a medium entering maturity. The base is large enough now that even 6% year-over-year adds ~35 million net new monthly listeners globally. That’s bigger than the entire Australian podcast audience, added annually.

Source: Edison Research Infinite Dial series (2015–2026). The 2024 figure showing flat growth vs. 2023 is real: the US market stalled at 47% penetration before breaking through. The jump to 55% in 2025 and 58% in 2026 is driven partly by video podcasts expanding what counts as “podcast consumption.”

Alex Rivera: This plateau-then-surge pattern is the most interesting data in the US series. The medium didn’t grow from 2023 to 2024 — not because demand dried up, but because the existing audience was fully served and new entry points hadn’t yet opened at scale. Video on YouTube opened those entry points. Once you can “watch” Joe Rogan on YouTube the same way you watch a TV show, “podcast listening” stops requiring a dedicated app and a commute.

How Many Podcasts Exist in 2026?

The answer depends entirely on what you count. The Podcast Index, one of the largest and most actively maintained catalogues, lists 4,701,128 total registered podcasts as of June 2026. But that denominator is generous: it includes test feeds, abandoned shows, and podcasts with a single episode published years ago. The more useful figure is active podcasts — shows that published at least one episode in the last 90 days. On Apple Podcasts, that number was 482,930 as of June 2026, per Podcast Industry Insights (Daniel J. Lewis). Spotify hosts approximately 7 million podcast titles but many are inactive or music-adjacent.

In Q1 2026 alone, 493,091 new shows launched. That’s roughly 5,400 new podcasts per day. Most don’t last. The average podcast goes inactive after 21 episodes. The 482,930 active shows on Apple Podcasts represent about 10% of registered titles — a useful reality check against the “4.7 million podcasts” headline.

The Africa numbers deserve a flag: the “85.6% of Morocco’s population identifies as podcast fans” figure comes from self-reported affinity surveys, which measure awareness and interest, not confirmed listening behavior. Penetration rates this high in markets with limited smartphone saturation should be read as aspirational, not operational.

Latin America is the fastest-growing region by listener count year-over-year, at +34% (Searchlab, March 2026). Brazil, with 68% monthly penetration among internet users and 6% of global podcast production, is the clearest single example of a non-English market developing at scale.

Alex Rivera: South Korea at 73% monthly penetration is the number I find genuinely surprising. That’s higher than any Western market. Korea’s podcast culture runs on a domestic app ecosystem most Western platforms barely touch — it’s a reminder that YouTube/Spotify market-share discussions are almost entirely US/UK-centric.

Podcast Platform Statistics: YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Compared

YouTube is now the dominant podcast platform by a margin that should make Spotify and Apple executives uncomfortable.

According to Edison Research’s Podcast Consumer 2026 study, 37% of weekly podcast consumers select YouTube as their most-used platform, up from 31% two years ago. In the Infinite Dial 2026, 42% of monthly listeners cite YouTube as their primary platform. The Edison Share of Ear data paints a slightly different picture: by listening time in Q4 2025, Spotify leads at 32% of all podcast time, followed by YouTube at 25% and Apple at 20%.

Spotify’s investment in podcasting hasn’t been wasted — its library grew from 100,000 video podcast titles in 2023 to over 330,000 in early 2026, and over 270 million Spotify users have watched a video podcast. But YouTube’s structural advantage is discovery: its recommendation algorithm, search infrastructure, and 1 billion+ monthly users who already use the platform for everything else give it a distribution flywheel no dedicated podcast app can replicate.

Apple Podcasts still matters at scale — 117.19 million episodes, 2.6 million shows, and a listener base that skews toward longer-form audio-first consumption — but its share has declined steadily as video consumption has shifted attention to YouTube.

Video Podcast Statistics 2026

The Infinite Dial 2026, presented by Megan Lazovick (VP, Edison Research at SSRS) on March 12, 2026, is the first edition to formally track “podcast consumption” rather than “podcast listening” — an editorial change that acknowledges video has become a core format.

Among all Americans who have ever consumed a podcast:

  • 57% have both listened to and watched one
  • 21% have listened but never watched
  • 2% have watched but never listened

That 2% is the number advertisers and platform strategists should focus on: the people who arrived through video and never converted to audio. They’re real, but they’re a small minority. Among weekly consumers in the last month: 26% did both, 13% listened only, 6% watched only. Video is an access point, not a replacement.

72% of new podcast listeners and 68% of longtime listeners say they first encountered a podcast through its video version, then moved to audio-only, per Edison Research’s The Evolving Ear. Video is the entry point; audio is the habit. This sequence matters for creators deciding whether to invest in video production.

Alex Rivera: 31% of creators are now publishing full video episodes alongside audio, and another 32% are considering it. That’s a majority of the active creator ecosystem treating video as a near-term necessity. The 19% who don’t plan to ever do video are either running audio-only formats where presence would be a liability — therapy shows, interview shows with sensitive guests — or they’re about to get outcompeted on discovery.

Podcast Advertising Statistics 2026

US Podcast Ad Revenue Growth

The IAB and PwC’s 2025 Internet Advertising Revenue Report, released April 2026, confirmed podcast advertising reached $2.862 billion in 2025 — a 17.6% year-over-year gain. This extended a decade of growth from $105.7 million in 2015.

The 2023 dip to 5% growth is the data point that never gets discussed fairly. It wasn’t a structural pullback — it was a correction after the 2021 pandemic surge, in a broader digital ad market that was itself contracting. The recovery to 26% in 2024 and 17.6% in 2025 is the more honest trend signal.

The IAB’s 2026 Outlook, published January 2026, forecasts podcast ad spending will grow 9.6% this year — stronger than the 7.9% gain estimated for 2025, and faster than digital audio overall (+3.8%), search, or display.

Why podcast ads work: Nielsen data shows host-read ads generate 71% higher brand recall than pre-produced spots. Podcast ads carry an 8% skip rate for mid-roll placements, compared to 65% for YouTube pre-roll. Edison Research reports 47% of podcast listeners have purchased a product after a podcast recommendation. Those three numbers — recall, skip rate, purchase intent — are why CPMs hold.

The 35–54 age group leading for the first time is the headline demographic finding in the Infinite Dial 2026. The 55+ surge — from 52% monthly online audio consumption in 2024 to 70% in 2026, a 20-point jump in two years — is the most commercially significant trend for advertisers targeting high-income households. Edison’s data finds Americans 55+ are driving the most recent increases in podcast consumption across the board.

Alex Rivera: The gender gap closing to 51/49 is the stat that most changes how advertisers should think about podcast placements. In 2016, male listeners outnumbered female listeners by about 15 points. That’s gone. True crime and wellness content pulled millions of women into the format; now the audience reflects the general population more closely than almost any digital ad channel.

News and politics drives the largest single-genre revenue share in the US, while Comedy drives the largest share of total listening time. The gap between the two reveals something important: time-with-content and advertiser value are not the same thing. A business podcast with 15,000 weekly listeners billing at $70 CPM earns more ad revenue per episode than a comedy podcast with 80,000 listeners billing at $20 CPM. Genre shapes monetization ceiling as much as audience size.

True crime’s 85%+ completion rate — consistently the highest of any genre alongside fiction — is what makes it an advertiser favorite despite audience sizes that are smaller than comedy. When three-quarters of your audience hears the mid-roll ad, completion math rewards concentration.

Note: The wide variance in market-size estimates reflects different scope definitions. Some reports include subscription revenues, platform valuations, and content licensing; others cover only advertising. Axis Intelligence Research treats the $39.63 billion (2026) and $131 billion (2030) figures from consistent-methodology sources as the working range for advertising-focused analysis.

The CAGR consistency across multiple firms (27–28% through 2030) is more informative than any single year-estimate. The inputs driving that rate — smartphone penetration in South Asia and Latin America, AI-assisted production reducing episode cost, programmatic maturity improving CPM efficiency — are structural, not cyclical.

US Podcast Industry Projection

The US podcast market alone is estimated at approximately $8.4 billion in 2025 (total industry including advertising, subscriptions, platform revenue) and is projected to reach $25.77 billion by 2030 at a 19.8% CAGR, per DemandSage.

812 million hours per week is a figure that needs context: the entire US population, at rest for one week, sleeping 8 hours a night for 7 days, generates 2.5 billion person-hours. Americans are spending the audio equivalent of roughly a third of that sleeping time listening to podcasts. This is not a niche.

The shift to home-dominant listening is the sharpest behavioral change in the 2026 data. Home listening was at 61% in 2024, 64% in 2025, and 63% in 2026. The commute — historically the assumed primary podcast context — now runs second. Video is the driver: you can’t watch a video podcast while driving.

30% finding podcasts through internet search is the number that podcast SEO advocates cite most. The corollary: 70% are finding shows through methods that depend on existing listeners and platform algorithms — which means first-episode quality, retention past episode 3, and social distribution matter more than SEO for early-stage growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people listen to podcasts in 2026?

Globally, 619.2 million people listen to podcasts monthly in 2026, projected from the 584.1 million confirmed for 2025. In the United States, 167 million Americans — 58% of the population aged 12 and older — are monthly podcast consumers, per Edison Research’s Infinite Dial 2026 (March 2026). By 2027, global listenership is projected to reach 651.7 million.

How many podcasts exist in 2026?

The Podcast Index lists 4,701,128 registered podcasts as of June 2026. Active shows — those publishing at least one episode in the past 90 days — number approximately 482,930 on Apple Podcasts (Podcast Industry Insights, June 2026). Most inactive shows stopped publishing before reaching 21 episodes.

What platform do most people use for podcasts?

YouTube is the most-used podcast platform among US weekly consumers in 2026, chosen by 37% as their primary service, up from 31% two years ago, per Edison Research’s Podcast Consumer 2026. YouTube has overtaken Spotify, which previously held the top position. By listening time, the Edison Share of Ear study places Spotify first (32%), YouTube second (25%), and Apple Podcasts third (20%).

How much revenue does podcast advertising generate?

US podcast advertising reached $2.862 billion in 2025, up 17.6% year-over-year, per the IAB and PwC’s 2025 Internet Advertising Revenue Report (April 2026). The IAB forecasts a 9.6% gain in 2026, which would place the US market above $3.1 billion. Global podcast ad spend is estimated above $5 billion in 2026.

What is the average podcast CPM rate in 2026?

Mid-roll host-read ads — the dominant format — range from $25 to $50 CPM for mid-tier shows, and $60 to $120 for shows in the top 100. Programmatic rates sit at $5 to $25. Finance and B2B shows regularly command $40 to $75+ CPM. These rates are based on IAB-certified download figures; non-certified inventory runs significantly lower.

Who listens to podcasts — what are the demographics?

The US podcast audience is roughly 51% male and 48% female (Edison Research 2026), with the gender gap effectively closed from a 15-point male skew a decade ago. The 35–54 age group leads monthly consumption at 68%, the first time this cohort has topped the rankings. Podcast listeners over-index on education and income: approximately half hold college degrees and listeners earning $75K+ are disproportionately represented. Millennials make up 32.7% of the US audience and Gen Z 28.9%.

What is the most popular podcast genre?

Comedy leads global podcast consumption at 30–33% of all listening hours (Spotify; multiple). In the US, comedy ranks first by audience size; news and current affairs ranks first by advertising revenue share. True crime and fiction genres command the highest episode completion rates, typically above 85%, per Edison Research.

How long are podcast episodes in 2026?

The average podcast episode runs 20 to 40 minutes, with median episode length at 41 minutes (down from 48 minutes in 2022). Shorter formats have improved completion rates by 5–20% when episodes stay under 30 minutes. Long-form interview episodes remain popular for established shows, but audience drop-off accelerates for episodes over 60 minutes unless listener loyalty is high.

How fast is the podcast market growing?

The global podcast market is projected to grow at a 27–28% CAGR from 2026 to 2030, reaching $131–$234 billion depending on the source methodology. Podcast advertising in the US grew 17.6% in 2025 and is projected to grow 9.6% in 2026 (IAB). Latin America is the fastest-growing region by listener count (+34% YoY). The Asia-Pacific region is the fastest-growing by market revenue, with a 15%+ CAGR through 2029.

Are video podcasts replacing audio podcasts?

Not replacing — augmenting. For the first time in 2026, video podcast consumption outpaced audio-only consumption in Edison Podcast Metrics. But among all Americans who consume podcasts, only 2% watch exclusively and never listen. 57% do both. The more accurate framing: video is the new entry point for discovery, and audio remains the dominant consumption mode, per Edison Research Podcast Consumer 2026 (June 2026).

The core US listener figures derive from Edison Research’s Infinite Dial 2026, a probability-sampled survey of 2,050 Americans aged 12 and older conducted in January 2026. The advertising revenue figures derive from the IAB/PwC 2025 Internet Advertising Revenue Report, which aggregates self-reported revenue from companies generating income on podcast platforms.

Global listener estimates are projections based on historical survey data from Edison Research, DemandSage, and Backlinko cross-referenced against Spotify/Apple Podcasts catalog data. No global figure in this dataset is based on survey-measured consumption; all global numbers are extrapolations.

Market size estimates vary widely depending on scope. Figures in the $28–$40 billion range typically cover advertising and direct subscription revenue. Figures in the $40–$60+ billion range include platform valuations, content licensing, and creator economy revenue. Axis Intelligence Research uses the narrower advertising-and-subscription definition.

Limitations: CPM data in this article is compiled from multiple industry benchmark sources and represents ranges, not fixed rates. Actual CPMs vary by show, audience, advertiser, and negotiation. Podcast-count data reflects different indexing methodologies across platforms; Podcast Index includes unverified feeds; Apple Podcasts counts are based on third-party tracking. Completion rate data is primarily self-reported by platforms and may differ from independent measurement.

Proprietary metric (PMEI): Calculated by Axis Intelligence Research using confirmed IAB/PwC revenue figures and Edison Research listener counts. Formula and inputs are fully disclosed. This metric has not been published by any third party in this form prior to this article.
