Generative AI now sits inside the daily workflows of 91% of tech designers — up from 54% just twelve months ago. The generative AI design market crossed $993.9 million in 2025 and is on course to exceed $1.33 billion in 2026 at a 32.75% compound annual growth rate. Adobe Firefly alone has produced 24 billion assets since its 2023 launch. The tools changed; the profession is following.

Quick Answer

The global generative AI in graphic design market reached $993.9 million in 2025 (Precedence Research, January 2026) and is projected to hit $16.9 billion by 2035. Adobe Firefly commands 29% market share among AI design tools and has generated more than 24 billion assets since March 2023. According to the State of AI Design 2026 survey of 900+ designers, weekly AI usage jumped from 54% to 91% in a single year — the fastest adoption shift the industry has recorded.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research estimates the AI Design Penetration Index (AADPI™) at 79.5 out of 100 for Q1 2026, combining platform adoption (91%), daily usage frequency (75%), enterprise internal-tool penetration (74%), and toolstack growth rate — the highest reading the index has produced since its baseline.
  2. The generative AI design market is worth $993.9 million in 2025 and is projected to compound at 32.75% annually through 2035, reaching $16.9 billion — a 17x expansion in one decade, per Precedence Research’s January 2026 report.
  3. Adobe Firefly has surpassed 24 billion generated assets as of June 2025, holds 29% AI design tool market share, and contributed $125 million in annual recurring revenue to Adobe’s Creative Cloud by 2025 — making it the fastest revenue ramp in the company’s history, per multiple Adobe earnings disclosures.
  4. The median U.S. graphic designer earned $61,300 in May 2024, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook — but employment growth is projected at only 2% through 2034, with the BLS explicitly citing AI productivity gains as a demand constraint.
  5. Canva closed 2025 with 265 million monthly active users and $4 billion in annual recurring revenue, per TechCrunch’s February 2026 report citing co-founder Cliff Obrecht directly — proof that the mass-market design layer has already crossed a scale threshold that professional tools haven’t reached.

How Big Is the AI Graphic Design Market?

The headline number varies depending on what you count. Two distinct markets overlap here, and conflating them produces misleading figures.

The first is the total graphic design market — all services and software, AI and non-AI, from freelance logo work to enterprise brand campaigns. Estimates for this range from $56.2 billion (NextMSC, May 2026) to $65.6 billion (SkyQuest, 2025) in 2025, depending on methodology. Mordor Intelligence (January 2026) pegs North America’s contribution at $21.55 billion, or 39.1% of global spend.

The second — the one that matters for this article — is the generative AI segment specifically. Precedence Research’s January 2026 report puts that at $993.9 million in 2025, growing to $1.33 billion in 2026. That means AI tools currently represent roughly 1.5% of total graphic design market value but are compounding at 32.75% per year while the broader market grows at 4–6%. The crossover point, where AI tools are no longer a rounding error in design budgets, is somewhere in the 2028–2030 window depending on which market estimate you use.

North America leads this sub-market too, with more than 40% revenue share in 2025, per the same Precedence Research report. The U.S. generative AI design market alone was $278.3 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $4.8 billion by 2035 — a 33% CAGR driven by the concentration of Fortune 500 marketing spend, enterprise Creative Cloud adoption, and the density of tech-sector design teams.

Sarah Mitchell’s read: The $993.9 million figure is striking less for its size than for where it’s concentrated. The Precedence data shows graphic design as the leading application within the broader generative AI in design category — ahead of product design, interior design, and architecture. This tracks. Graphic designers deal in iteration volume and format proliferation (social variants, localization runs, campaign reskins) at a pace that maps cleanly onto what current AI tools do well. That alignment will widen as tools improve.

Who Is Actually Using AI in Graphic Design?

Weekly AI Usage Among Design Professionals

The most current primary dataset on practitioner adoption is the AI in Design 2026 report published by Designer Fund and Foundation Capital in Q1 2026, based on a survey of more than 900 designers at startups, enterprises, and agencies. The methodology is disclosed, the sample is large enough to be directional, and — importantly — it’s one year removed from the same team’s 2025 baseline, making year-over-year comparisons meaningful.

The headline: 91% of respondents use AI for design tasks at least weekly in 2026, up from 54% in 2025 — a 37-point jump in twelve months. Three in four (75%) use it daily. The survey was conducted in March 2026 and covers tech designers specifically; the figure for the broader graphic design population, which includes print, packaging, and non-tech sectors, is lower and less directly measured.

Where AI Has Entered the Design Process

Per the AI in Design 2026 report, the leading use cases are ideation, prototyping, and UI copy. The biggest year-over-year movers are code generation (+31 percentage points), wireframing (+27 points), and design systems (+24 points) — all workflows that sat at the edges of AI adoption in 2025 and have now moved to the center. Only one workflow declined: stakeholder presentations, down 4 points, which may reflect designers using AI for the work itself rather than the slides explaining it.

The Toolstack Doubling

Designers surveyed in 2026 now use an average of 7 off-the-shelf AI tools, up from 3 in 2025 — a 133% increase in tool count in one year. The State of AI Design report notes this figure is consistent across company sizes, geographies, and seniority levels.

This proliferation isn’t stabilizing. Nearly half of respondents say they are still searching for their go-to tools; 37% say they have settled on a clear set. The implication is that the market is in early consolidation — there will be fewer tools in use per designer in three years than there are today, but we don’t yet know which ones survive.

Who Uses AI Most?

Adoption data from the AI in Design 2026 survey breaks down by company size in one especially revealing way: 74% of designers at enterprise organizations (2,000+ employees) use internally-built AI tools, compared to only 26% at small organizations (up to 50 employees) — a nearly 5x gap. At enterprises, these internal tools rank as the second most-used general AI category, trailing only Claude. The explanation is security and compliance: enterprises can’t always use off-the-shelf tools with proprietary brand assets or client data, so they build their own.

Axis AI Design Penetration Index (AADPI™)

Axis Intelligence Research introduces the AI Design Penetration Index (AADPI™) to produce a single, annually trackable figure for how deeply AI has embedded into graphic design workflows — capturing adoption breadth, intensity, enterprise penetration, and stack acceleration in one number. The index is not a market size; it measures integration depth.

Formula

AADPI™ = (Platform adoption rate × 0.35) + (Daily usage rate × 0.30) + (Enterprise penetration × 0.25) + (Toolstack growth score × 0.10)

Where:

  • Platform adoption rate: share of tech designers using AI at least weekly (State of AI Design 2026)
  • Daily usage rate: share using AI daily (State of AI Design 2026)
  • Enterprise penetration: share of enterprise designers (2,000+ employees) using AI tools, including internal builds (State of AI Design 2026)
  • Toolstack growth score: year-over-year growth in average tools per designer, normalized to 0–100 (max assumed baseline = 200% growth)

A score of 79.5 means AI has moved well past the “experimental” phase (0–40 range) and is solidly in the “embedded infrastructure” zone (70–100). The primary ceiling on a higher score is output quality: 62% of designers in the same survey cite inconsistent or unreliable output as their biggest AI challenge. As model quality improves, AADPI™ should continue rising — the formula is designed to detect plateaus as well as acceleration.

Axis Intelligence Research will update the AADPI™ reading annually using the same survey basis, and will revise methodology (version 1.1 or higher) if significant new data dimensions become available. Historical readings will never be silently rewritten; revisions are noted with a version tag.

Adobe Firefly: The Dominant Platform

Scale of Generation

Adobe Firefly crossed 24 billion generated assets in June 2025, per a Digital Camera World report citing Adobe’s official milestone announcement. To anchor the number: that’s approximately 3 assets generated per living human being on the planet since the platform launched in March 2023.

The growth trajectory follows a steep curve: 1 billion in the first six months, 6 billion by November 2023, 16 billion by November 2024, 22 billion by April 2025, and 24 billion by June 2025. The pace — roughly 1 billion new generations per month during 2024 — shows a platform that has moved past the novelty phase into sustained professional use.

Firefly is embedded in at least seven major Creative Cloud applications. Per disclosures aggregated by Quantumrun Consulting, 75–85% of Firefly activity occurs inside Photoshop and Illustrator, the two applications with the largest installed bases of professional designers. Photoshop monthly active users grew approximately 10% following Firefly integration. Adobe Express recorded a threefold usage increase year-over-year from 2023 to 2024 after Firefly features were embedded.

Revenue and Market Position

Adobe’s fiscal year 2025 closed November 28, 2025 with total revenue of $23.77 billion, representing 11% year-over-year growth, per Adobe’s official earnings release. Total ARR exiting fiscal 2025 reached $25.2 billion (11.5% year-over-year growth), per the same release and confirmed in Adobe’s Form 10-K filed with the SEC. The Digital Media segment — which contains Creative Cloud and Document Cloud — generated $17.65 billion in FY2025 revenue with Digital Media ARR at $19.20 billion.

Firefly’s contribution: Mordor Intelligence (January 2026) reports Firefly reached $125 million in annual recurring revenue by 2025, representing 11% of Creative Cloud new ARR. Among AI design tools, Firefly holds 29% market share, per multiple aggregator sources citing consistent figure. For context, MidJourney sits at 19%, Canva AI at 16%, and DALL-E at 14%, per the same data.

Among Fortune 500 design teams, Firefly adoption stands at 72%, with marketing agencies at 63% and e-commerce brands at 58%, per disclosure-based aggregations. The enterprise concentration matters: 61% of Firefly revenue derives from enterprise contracts, per the same sources.

Important caveat: The per-segment revenue figure ($125M ARR) and market share figure (29%) are reported by secondary aggregators drawing on Adobe earnings disclosures and market surveys. Adobe does not publish per-product ARR as a standalone metric in its quarterly filings. These figures are directional, not audited.

Canva: Design Democratized at Scale

User Base

Canva ended 2025 with more than 265 million monthly active users, per TechCrunch’s February 2026 report citing Canva co-founder and COO Cliff Obrecht directly at Web Summit Qatar. Paid subscribers exceeded 31 million. Annual recurring revenue reached $4 billion by year-end 2025. The B2B segment (companies with 25+ seats) grew roughly 100% to approximately $500 million in ARR.

The user count puts Canva in an unusual position: it is both a graphic design tool and a population-scale communications platform. Roughly 265 million people interacted with Canva’s interface in a typical month of 2025 — more than the total population of Brazil.

For context on AI feature adoption within Canva’s base: by October 2025, users had more than 26 million conversations with the Canva app on ChatGPT, per Obrecht’s statements to TechCrunch. The company’s AI-powered mini-apps tool now has more than 10 million monthly active users.

Canva vs. Professional Tools: A Scale Gap, Not a Quality Gap

Canva’s 265 million users dwarf Figma’s 13 million monthly active users (disclosed in Figma’s S-1 filed July 2025, as of March 2025) and any reasonable estimate of Adobe’s professional-tier user base. But scale doesn’t mean the same thing in all contexts. Canva’s user base is predominantly non-designers — small business owners, students, social media managers, and marketers creating one-off visual content. Figma’s 13 million includes a higher share of professional product and UX designers.

The more interesting trend: Figma’s own S-1 states that two-thirds of its users are not designers. The design tool distinction is dissolving at every tier.

Figma: The Professional Collaboration Layer

Figma disclosed 13 million monthly active users in its S-1 filed July 1, 2025 (data as of March 2025), alongside $1.06 billion in 2025 revenue (41% year-over-year growth). The company priced its IPO above the expected range, raised $1.2 billion, and saw shares surge 158% on debut.

In the AI in Design 2026 survey, Figma’s role is shifting. Some designers use it as the starting point for AI-assisted work; others describe using it as a “scalpel” — a finishing tool for fine-tuning work produced in code or by AI — rather than the primary canvas. A smaller group reports rarely opening Figma at all, working code-first from day one.

The State of Prototyping Spring 2026 survey (UX Tools) still ranks Figma as the most-used design tool in 2026. But how it is used — and what it’s used for relative to AI coding tools — is in active flux.

What AI Graphic Design Means for Employment

The BLS View

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects graphic designer employment to grow 2% from 2024 to 2034, slower than the 3% average for all occupations, per the Occupational Outlook Handbook updated August 2025 and retrieved July 2026. The BLS projects approximately 20,000 job openings annually over the decade, largely from replacement demand as workers retire or shift occupations.

The BLS explicitly names AI as a demand constraint. The agency’s Monthly Labor Review (updated 2026) states: “Graphic designers can leverage generative AI tools in the initial step of the design process, which allows these workers to explore and iterate ideas faster… These productivity gains are expected to limit demand for this occupation.”

The median annual wage for graphic designers was $61,300 in May 2024, per BLS OEWS data. The top 10% earned more than $103,030; the bottom 10% less than $37,600.

The Salary Premium for AI Skills

A 2024 survey cited by Gitnux found that 22% of graphic design roles saw salary increases of 15% for workers with demonstrated AI skills in 2023. This is directional data from a single survey — treat it as a signal, not a precise estimate. The direction is plausible: tools that raise output throughput create leverage for skilled operators who know how to use them.

The 2% growth projection deserves some unpacking. Print-focused design is declining; digital design is expanding. The BLS projects separately that digital designers and special effects artists may see different trajectories. But even in a growing digital segment, AI tools that enable individual designers to produce more, faster, suppress headcount growth. The headcount story is not “designers lose jobs to AI” — at least not in the 2024–2034 window the BLS is modeling. It’s “AI absorbs a share of the growth that would otherwise have created new jobs.”

AI Design Tool Adoption by Sector

The AI in Design 2026 report and aggregated survey data allow a breakdown by sector and designer type, though methodology varies by source and the figures below should be treated as directional ranges.

Note: Firefly-specific adoption figures derive from Adobe disclosure aggregations and should not be compared directly to the State of AI Design weekly-usage figures, which measure AI tool use broadly rather than Firefly specifically.

Challenges: What’s Slowing Adoption

The AI in Design 2026 survey is unusually candid on the friction points. Three themes dominate.

Output quality is the ceiling. 80% of designers say reliable, high-quality output is what makes an AI tool stick. At the same time, 62% cite inconsistent or unreliable output as their biggest challenge. The gap between those two numbers — the demand for quality and the perception of its absence — is the market opportunity that the next generation of models is competing to close.

Toolstack instability creates fatigue. With designers now averaging 7 tools and nearly half still searching for their go-to stack, there’s a parallel cost: almost constant evaluation of new entrants. The AI in Design 2026 report references a Harvard Business Review article from February 2026 with the finding that AI doesn’t reduce work — it intensifies it. More capability creates more possibilities, not less obligation.

Security and compliance gate enterprise adoption. Budget constraints and security/compliance concerns are the primary blockers at the company level, per the same survey. This is why enterprises build internal tools (74% adoption among large organizations) rather than defaulting to consumer-facing platforms.

Sarah Mitchell’s observation: The output quality problem is the most solvable of the three, and it’s being solved fast. The HBR point about AI intensifying work is the one that deserves more attention from designers building their practice around these tools. Throughput gains are real. So is scope expansion. Managing both at once requires deliberate boundaries — which is not something the AI tools themselves provide.

Regional and Platform Breakdown

North America Leads Both Markets

North America accounted for $21.55 billion — 39.1% of total graphic design market value in 2025 — per Mordor Intelligence (January 2026). In the generative AI design sub-market, North America’s share exceeds 40%, per Precedence Research (January 2026).

The U.S. remains Canva’s largest market in absolute terms. Its share of Canva website traffic is approximately 14.4–19.2% depending on which measurement period is cited, per SimilarWeb data aggregated by multiple sources. TechCrunch’s February 2026 report confirms North America as the majority of Canva’s business.

Asia-Pacific: The Growth Market

Asia-Pacific is projected to be the fastest-growing region in the total graphic design market, at an 11.1% CAGR to $27.19 billion by 2031, per Mordor Intelligence. In 2024, the region accounted for 23% of global graphic design market revenue, per SkyQuest (2025). The concentration in India, Southeast Asia, and South Korea — driven by digital infrastructure investment, mobile-first design demand, and a growing startup ecosystem — is the reason market forecasters give Asia-Pacific the fastest growth label in their models.

The Designer’s Changing Role

The AI in Design 2026 report introduces a framing that cuts through the noise: designers are becoming toolmakers. The most sought-after practitioners in 2026 are evaluated not just on output but on the workflows they build — microtools, agentic pipelines, internal automation — that extend their leverage across a team.

This is a structural shift. A designer who can build a brand-aware prototyping tool that any product manager can use without design involvement is doing something fundamentally different from a designer whose value is in their personal output. Both will exist. The latter is more replaceable by AI at the margins; the former is becoming more important.

The AI in Design 2026 data confirms the transition is underway: 50% of survey respondents have shipped code to production, driven by AI coding tools that lower the technical floor. Code generation usage jumped 31 percentage points year-over-year in the same survey.

Whether this expands the total economic opportunity for designers — or concentrates it among a smaller, higher-leverage cohort — is the question the 2027 data will start to answer.

The AADPI™

The Axis AI Design Penetration Index (AADPI™) is an original Axis Intelligence Research metric, formula v1.0, first published in this article. Inputs are sourced exclusively from the AI in Design 2026 survey (Designer Fund / Foundation Capital, Q1 2026). The formula, weights, and Python-verified calculation are disclosed in the AADPI™ section above. The index will be updated annually; this is the baseline reading. No prior reading exists.

Limitations

Market sizing estimates for the graphic design industry vary materially across research firms (range: $52.3B–$65.6B for 2025 total market). Axis Intelligence Research uses figures where the source organization and methodology are named, and notes where secondary market research estimates diverge. The AADPI™ is based on a tech-designer-heavy sample (State of AI Design 2026); application to the full graphic design population — including print, packaging, and agency designers — requires caution. Firefly market share and ARR contribution figures are aggregated from secondary sources; Adobe does not publish per-product ARR separately.
