GitHub Copilot reached 50 million users by July 2026, according to Microsoft’s FY26 Q4 earnings call, while Cursor last confirmed more than $1 billion in annualized revenue in November 2025. Axis Intelligence Research finds a Cursor Teams seat lists at 2.11× the price of a Copilot Business seat.

Quick Answer

GitHub Copilot is the larger product by reach: 50 million users and 4.7 million paid subscribers, per Microsoft. Cursor is the faster-monetizing challenger: $1B+ annualized revenue (Nov 2025), 64% of the Fortune 500 (company-reported), and a $60 billion acquisition by SpaceX. On list price, Axis Intelligence Research calculates a Seat Premium Multiple (SPM) of 2.11 for Cursor over Copilot at the team tier.

Key Findings

  1. GitHub Copilot had 50 million users as of July 29, 2026, according to Microsoft’s FY26 Q4 earnings call.
  2. GitHub Copilot revenue grew more than 60% quarter over quarter after the June 2026 switch to usage-based billing, per Microsoft.
  3. Cursor crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue and raised $2.3 billion at a $29.3 billion valuation in November 2025, per Anysphere.
  4. Axis Intelligence Research calculates that a 100-seat team pays $25,200 more per year at list price on Cursor Teams than on Copilot Business.
  5. Axis Intelligence Research finds SpaceX’s $60 billion price for Cursor was 2.05× its Series D valuation set seven months earlier.

How Many People Use GitHub Copilot vs Cursor?

The two companies don’t count the same thing, and that is the first trap in every “Copilot vs Cursor” chart online.

Microsoft reports users. On its FY26 Q4 earnings call (July 29, 2026), Satya Nadella said GitHub Copilot now has 50 million users. Six months earlier, on the FY26 Q2 call, he gave the paid number: over 4.7 million paid Copilot subscribers, up 75% year over year.

Cursor reports revenue and enterprise logos, not user counts. Its Series D announcement says only “millions of developers.” Its enterprise page claims 50,000+ enterprises and use at 64% of Fortune 500 companies.

Axis Intelligence Research estimates Copilot carries roughly 10.6 users per paid subscriber (50M ÷ 4.7M). The dates differ by six months, so treat that ratio as an upper bound on the free-to-paid spread, not a conversion rate.

How widely is each editor used by developers?

The only independent, same-questionnaire comparison is the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey. Cursor was used regularly by 17.9% of all respondents, 19.3% of professional developers, and 21.7% of professionals who use AI. VS Code, the editor where most Copilot usage lives, sat at 75.9%.

Among developers who use AI agents, the AI section of the same survey found 67.9% had used GitHub Copilot, versus 40.8% for Claude Code. Cursor wasn’t listed in that agent question — it was measured as an IDE instead.

Elena Rodriguez: Fifty million users is a distribution number. It tells you Copilot ships inside the editor three-quarters of developers already open every morning. It does not tell you how many seats someone’s finance team is paying for — that’s the 4.7 million. When a vendor deck compares Cursor’s revenue to Copilot’s user count, it’s comparing a P&L line to a download counter.

GitHub Copilot vs Cursor Revenue: Which Makes More Money?

Neither company publishes a clean, current, audited revenue figure for the product itself.

Cursor‘s last company-confirmed figure is more than $1 billion in annualized revenue, stated in its November 13, 2025 Series D post. Higher run-rate figures circulated in 2026 press coverage; Anysphere did not confirm them in a document we could fetch, so this dataset does not carry them.

GitHub Copilot revenue is buried inside Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud segment. What Microsoft did disclose on the Q4 call: Copilot revenue accelerated over 60% quarter over quarter after the June business-model change, and CFO Amy Hood credited “stronger-than-expected GitHub Copilot consumption” for part of Azure’s beat.

Elena Rodriguez: A 60% sequential jump right after a pricing change is a billing event before it’s a demand event. Usage that used to be absorbed inside a flat seat now shows up as consumption revenue. Watch the next two quarters: if the growth rate holds after the new pricing laps itself, that’s real expansion. If it snaps back to the seat-growth line, the June quarter was a re-meter, not a surge.

Is Cursor More Expensive Than GitHub Copilot?

Yes, at every published tier — and the gap widens where companies actually buy.

Prices below were fetched from GitHub’s Copilot plans documentation and Cursor’s pricing page on September 24, 2026.

The Seat Premium Multiple (SPM)

Seat Premium Multiple (SPM) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric: the list price of Cursor’s team seat divided by the list price of GitHub Copilot’s team seat.

SPM = $40 ÷ $19 = 2.11 (as of September 24, 2026)

For a 100-developer team, that’s $40 × 12 × 100 = $48,000/year on Cursor Teams versus $19 × 12 × 100 = $22,800/year on Copilot Business — a $25,200 annual gap before either vendor bills a single dollar of overage.

SPM measures sticker price only. Cursor’s Teams tier bundles things Copilot Business charges separately for or scopes differently (Bugbot reviews, shared cloud agents), and both products now meter heavy agent use on top of the seat.

How much agent usage does each Copilot plan actually include?

Since June 1, 2026, Copilot bills agent, chat, and CLI work in GitHub AI Credits at $0.01 each; completions stay unlimited on paid plans. Axis Intelligence Research built a second metric to show how much metered usage each dollar of subscription buys.

Agent Credit Yield (ACY) = (included monthly credits × $0.01) ÷ monthly plan price.

Copilot planPriceIncluded creditsCredit valueACYSource
Pro$101,500$151.50GitHub
Pro+$397,000$701.79GitHub
Max$10020,000$2002.00GitHub
Business$191,900$191.00GitHub
Enterprise$393,900$391.00GitHub

The individual plans hand back up to twice their price in credits (the “flex allotment” GitHub says may change over time). The business plans return exactly face value, pooled across the org. Cursor’s pricing page states each plan “includes a set amount of model usage” but does not publish the amount, so an ACY cannot be computed for Cursor.

Elena Rodriguez: Here’s where the ROI deck breaks. An engineering manager comparing $19 to $40 sees Copilot as half price. But an agent-heavy team on Business gets $19 of credits per seat, pooled — no flex bonus. The same developer on a personal Pro+ plan gets $70 of usage for $39. Procurement buys the seat with the worst yield. If your team lives in agent mode, budget the overage line, not the seat line.

Why Did SpaceX Pay $60 Billion for Cursor?

On June 16, 2026, SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor in a $60 billion stock deal, TechCrunch reported from the company’s filing, with closing expected in the third quarter. The April option carried a $10 billion alternative payment if the purchase didn’t go through.

Axis Intelligence Research calculates the $60 billion price was 2.05× the $29.3 billion post-money valuation Cursor announced on November 13, 2025 — a doubling in roughly seven months.

CNBC, citing Ramp corporate-spending data, reported that Cursor’s share of AI coding spend among Ramp customers fell from 41% in June 2025 to about 26% in May 2026. That is one card-spend panel, not the market, but it’s the only public time series showing Cursor’s share moving.

Elena Rodriguez: A buyer paying double the last round while the target’s spend share is sliding is buying the revenue base and the model team, not the share trend. For a customer, the practical question is contract terms: what changes in data handling and model routing once your editor vendor belongs to a company that also sells models.

How Much of Coding Is Now Done by Agents?

Microsoft says one in three pull requests on GitHub now involves an agent, and GitHub counts 225 million users overall (FY26 Q4 call). That figure covers every agent that opens PRs on GitHub — Copilot’s cloud agent, Cursor’s, Claude Code, Codex — which is why it matters to both sides of this comparison: GitHub is the repository layer Cursor users still ship through.

Developers remain wary. In the Stack Overflow 2025 survey, 84% use or plan to use AI tools and 50.6% of professionals use them daily, yet 46% distrust AI output accuracy and 66% name “almost right, but not quite” as their top frustration.

Elena Rodriguez: The agent share of PRs is the number that should drive tooling budgets, and it’s also the one that makes the Copilot-versus-Cursor framing a bit dated. Code review minutes, CI runs and credit burn now scale with agent volume, not headcount. Price per seat is becoming the smallest line on the invoice.

GitHub Copilot vs Cursor: Which Should a Team Choose in 2026?

The data supports a scenario verdict, not a single winner:

  • Cost-first teams already on GitHub Enterprise Cloud: Copilot Business wins on list price (SPM 2.11) and brings IP indemnity and pooled credits.
  • Teams standardizing on an AI-native editor: Cursor has higher enterprise penetration claims (64% of the Fortune 500, company-reported) and a smaller but more committed user base — 46.7% of Cursor users admire it, per Stack Overflow.
  • Mixed shops: Cursor is a VS Code fork and runs the Copilot extension; GitHub’s Pro+ plan can delegate to third-party agents. Many teams will pay for both, and the $25,200-per-100-seats gap is the cost of that choice.

Methodology

Collection. Axis Intelligence Research fetched every figure on September 24, 2026 from: Microsoft FY26 Q2 and Q4 earnings-call transcripts; GitHub’s Copilot plans documentation and pricing page; Anysphere’s Series D post, enterprise page and pricing page; the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey (Technology and AI sections); and TechCrunch’s report on the SpaceX filing. One figure (Ramp spend share) comes from CNBC reporting and is marked secondary.

Formulas.

  • Seat Premium Multiple (SPM) = Cursor Teams monthly list price ÷ Copilot Business monthly list price.
  • Agent Credit Yield (ACY) = included monthly AI credits × $0.01 ÷ monthly plan price.
  • Annual 100-seat list cost = monthly seat price × 12 × 100.
  • Valuation step-up = acquisition value ÷ Series D post-money valuation.
  • Users per paid subscriber = total users ÷ paid subscribers.

Scope. List prices exclude taxes, discounts and on-demand usage. Company-reported enterprise figures (Cursor’s 64% and 50,000+) are not independently audited. Stack Overflow figures date from July 2025; the 2026 edition will replace them. Revenue figures from press reports that the companies did not confirm are excluded.

GitHub Copilot vs Cursor: Questions Buyers and Developers Ask

Does GitHub Copilot have more users than Cursor?

Yes. Microsoft reported 50 million GitHub Copilot users in July 2026. Cursor has not published a user count; its November 2025 funding post said only “millions of developers.”

Is Cursor twice the price of GitHub Copilot?

At team and entry tiers, roughly. Cursor Teams costs $40 per user per month versus $19 for Copilot Business — a Seat Premium Multiple of 2.11, per Axis Intelligence Research (September 2026 list prices).

What does a 100-developer team pay per year for each tool?

At list price, $48,000 for Cursor Teams and $22,800 for Copilot Business, a $25,200 difference before any usage-based overage, per Axis Intelligence Research.

How much Copilot agent usage is included in each plan?

Copilot Pro includes 1,500 AI credits ($15), Pro+ 7,000 ($70), Max 20,000 ($200), and Business and Enterprise 1,900 and 3,900 credits per user, pooled. One credit equals $0.01, per GitHub.

Can I use GitHub Copilot inside Cursor?

Yes. Cursor is a fork of VS Code and accepts VS Code extensions, including the official GitHub Copilot extension, so some developers run both.

Who owns Cursor now?

SpaceX agreed in June 2026 to acquire Cursor’s parent, Anysphere, for $60 billion in stock, with closing expected in the third quarter of 2026, according to TechCrunch’s report on the filing.

Is Cursor losing market share to other AI coding tools?

One spend dataset suggests so: Ramp data cited by CNBC showed Cursor’s share of AI-coding spend falling from 41% (June 2025) to about 26% (May 2026). No company-wide share figure exists.

Why is GitHub Copilot’s revenue growing so fast in 2026?

Microsoft attributed Copilot’s more-than-60% quarter-over-quarter revenue acceleration to seat growth plus consumption revenue after GitHub moved to usage-based billing in June 2026.
