The world has between 250,000 and 713,626 ultra-high-net-worth individuals in 2026, depending on whose model you trust and whether you count net worth or investable assets. Axis Intelligence Research finds the two net-worth models alone disagree by 28%, and that the United States will absorb 58% of all new UHNWIs through 2031.
Quick Answer
There are 556,850 ultra-high-net-worth individuals (net worth of $30 million or more) according to Altrata’s World Ultra Wealth Report 2026, holding $63.8 trillion at year-end 2025. Knight Frank’s Wealth Report 2026 counts 713,626 in 2026. Capgemini, which measures investable assets only, counts roughly 250,000. Axis Intelligence Research calculates an average UHNW net worth of $114.6 million, of which only 40.8% is investable.
Key Findings
- Axis Intelligence Research estimates the global UHNW population will reach 948,409 by 2031, applying Knight Frank’s published 32.9% five-year growth forecast to its 2026 count of 713,626.
- Axis Intelligence Research calculates that the United States will capture 58.0% of the world’s net new UHNWIs between 2026 and 2031 — 136,070 of an implied 234,783 — while starting with 35.2% of the stock.
- Indonesia posts the highest UHNW Gravity Score (UGS) in the world at 2.48, meaning its ultra-wealthy population is forecast to grow 2.48 times faster than the global UHNW base through 2031, per Axis Intelligence Research.
- Axis Intelligence Research’s UHNW Model Divergence Ratio (UMDR) reads 1.28 globally and 1.76 for India: Knight Frank counts 76% more Indian UHNWIs than Altrata, under the same $30 million net-worth threshold.
- Billionaires are 0.62% of the UHNW population but hold 31.5% of its net worth, Axis Intelligence Research calculates from Forbes’ 3,428 billionaires ($20.1 trillion) and Altrata’s 556,850 UHNWIs ($63.8 trillion).
How Many Ultra High Net Worth Individuals Are There in 2026?
Three serious models, three answers. The spread is not noise. It is the definition doing the work.
| Model | UHNW count | Threshold basis | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Knight Frank Wealth Sizing Model | 713,626 | $30M+ net worth | 2026 | Knight Frank, The Wealth Report 2026 |
| Altrata Wealth and Investable Assets Model | 556,850 | $30M+ net worth | Year-end 2025 | Altrata, World Ultra Wealth Report 2026 |
| Capgemini Lorenz-curve model | ~250,000 | $30M+ investable assets (excl. primary residence) | Year-end 2025 | Capgemini Research Institute, World Wealth Report 2026 |
Knight Frank and Altrata both draw the line at $30 million of net worth: operating businesses, private stakes, property and cash all count. Capgemini draws it at $30 million of investable assets, and its methodology excludes the primary residence, collectibles, consumables and consumer durables. A founder whose $80 million sits almost entirely in an unlisted company clears the first bar and can miss the second.
Why Capgemini’s UHNW count is so much smaller
Altrata itself estimates that the 556,850 people above $30 million of net worth hold $26 trillion of investable assets against $63.8 trillion of net worth. Axis Intelligence Research calculates that ratio at 40.8%: on average, six dollars in ten of a UHNW fortune are not sitting in something a private bank can custody. That gap is exactly what separates the 250,000 investable-asset count from the 556,850 net-worth count.
Capgemini puts its UHNWIs at 1% of HNWIs holding 34.8% of the $98.3 trillion HNWI wealth pool. Axis Intelligence Research converts that into an average of $136.8 million in investable wealth per Capgemini UHNWI (34.8% × $98.3T ÷ 250,000), against $9.5 million for Capgemini’s Mid-Tier Millionaires ($5M–$30M) and $1.84 million for its Millionaires Next Door ($1M–$5M). The ultra-wealthy band holds a 74x average-wealth multiple over the entry tier.
The UHNW Model Divergence Ratio (UMDR)
We will not average the three models. Their definitions and base dates differ, and blending them would produce a number that describes no one. Instead, Axis Intelligence Research publishes the size of the disagreement as its own metric.
UMDR (UHNW Model Divergence Ratio) = Knight Frank count ÷ Altrata count, same $30 million net-worth threshold, latest published edition of each.
| Geography | Knight Frank (2026) | Altrata (YE 2025) | UMDR | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| World | 713,626 | 556,850 | 1.28 | Axis Intelligence Research from Knight Frank and Altrata |
| United States | 251,352 | 206,880 | 1.21 | Axis Intelligence Research from Knight Frank and Altrata |
| Germany | 38,215 | 28,330 | 1.35 | Axis Intelligence Research from Knight Frank and Altrata |
| India | 19,877 | 11,275 | 1.76 | Axis Intelligence Research from Knight Frank and Altrata |
Part of the global gap is timing: Altrata measures year-end 2025, Knight Frank 2026. But Altrata’s own 2025 growth was 14.4%, which cannot close a 28% spread, and a timing effect cannot explain why India’s divergence runs more than double the global figure.
Sarah Davis on the definition spread: A UMDR of 1.76 is a warning label on every “number of ultra-rich in India” headline you will read this year. For a private bank sizing a booking-centre pipeline, the model you choose moves the addressable list by eight-and-a-half thousand names. Ask which model the deck is using before you trust its client-acquisition math — and ask whether it counts the promoter’s listed stake at market or at what it would actually fetch in a block sale.
How Fast Is the Ultra-Wealthy Population Growing?
Every 2026 source agrees on direction. They disagree on pace.
| Measure | Value | Period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| UHNW population growth (net worth) | +14.4% | 2025 | Altrata |
| UHNW net-worth growth | +14.3%, to $63.8T | 2025 | Altrata |
| UHNW population growth (investable) | +9.4% | 2025 | Capgemini |
| UHNW investable-wealth growth | +9.7% | 2025 | Capgemini |
| New UHNWIs, 2021–2026 | 162,191 (89 per day) | 5 years | Knight Frank |
| Global UHNW count, 2021 → 2026 | 551,435 → 713,626 | 5 years | Knight Frank |
| UHNW growth since 2004 | +255% | 2004–2025 | Altrata |
Axis Intelligence Research calculates that Altrata’s 14.4% expansion in 2025 equals roughly 192 new UHNWIs per day — more than double the 89-per-day pace Knight Frank records across 2021–2026. Both can be true: a five-year average absorbs the 2022 drawdown, while 2025 was, in Altrata’s words, the strongest year since 2017.
UHNW forecasts to 2030 and 2031
| Forecast | Value | Horizon | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global UHNW population | 746,570 | 2030 | Altrata |
| Global UHNW net worth | $85T | 2030 | Altrata |
| Global UHNW growth | +32.9% | 2026–2031 | Knight Frank |
| Implied global UHNW population | 948,409 | 2031 | Axis Intelligence Research (713,626 × 1.329) |
| Implied net additions | 234,783 | 2026–2031 | Axis Intelligence Research |
| Implied annual growth rate | 5.85% | 2026–2031 | Axis Intelligence Research ((1.329)^(1/5) − 1) |
Altrata’s forecast averages 6% a year to 2030; Knight Frank’s implies 5.85% a year to 2031. Two models that disagree on the level agree almost exactly on the slope.
Which Countries Have the Most Ultra High Net Worth Individuals?
The United States is not merely first. It is larger than the rest of the top ten combined, according to Altrata.
| Country | UHNW population | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 251,352 | 2026 | Knight Frank |
| United States | 206,880 (37% of global) | YE 2025 | Altrata |
| China | 55,490 | YE 2025 | Altrata |
| Germany | 38,215 | 2026 | Knight Frank |
| Germany | 28,330 | YE 2025 | Altrata |
| India | 19,877 | 2026 | Knight Frank |
| Australia | 16,460 | 2026 | Knight Frank |
| Canada | 12,920 | 2026 | Knight Frank |
| India | 11,275 | YE 2025 | Altrata |
US ultra-wealthy individuals held $23.8 trillion in 2025, nearly four times China’s total, per Altrata. Knight Frank tracks the US share of the global UHNW population rising from 33% in 2021 to 35% in 2026, with a forecast of 41% by 2031. China’s share moves the other way: 18% to 17%, and 15% by 2031.
UHNW population by region

| Pacific | 7,630 | +4.7% | $0.7T | Altrata |
| Africa | 3,440 | +23.7% | $0.4T | Altrata |
Europe has 1,750 fewer UHNWIs than Asia but holds $0.7 trillion more of their wealth. Knight Frank’s regional figures for 2026 put Asia-Pacific at 219,310 and Europe at 183,953.
Which cities have the most ultra-wealthy residents?
| Metro area | UHNW population (YE 2025) | 2025 growth | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York | 23,785 | +16.9% | Altrata |
| Hong Kong | 18,290 | +26.4% | Altrata |

| Boston | 6,340 | +16.3% | Altrata |
| Seoul | 6,220 | +36.3% | Altrata |
The top 12 metros hold 121,960 UHNWIs. Axis Intelligence Research calculates that as 21.9% of the global population living in twelve postcodes’ worth of wealth management demand. Eight of the twelve are American.
Altrata’s fastest-growing UHNW cities to 2030 sit outside that list: Delhi (1,095 → 1,868, 11.3% a year), Stockholm (1,385 → 2,308), Wuhan (941 → 1,537), Melbourne (1,432 → 2,331) and Guangzhou (1,321 → 2,109).
Sarah Davis on concentration: London at 7,190 sits ninth, behind Dallas. Knight Frank’s prime index has London prices down 4.7% in 2025 while Dubai rose 25.1%. The flows follow the tax code faster than they follow the restaurants.
Where Will the Next Ultra-Wealthy Come From? The UHNW Gravity Score
Growth rates mislead when bases differ. A country can grow 80% and add fewer people than the US adds in a month. So Axis Intelligence Research built a single measure of who is gaining weight in the global UHNW population.
What the UHNW Gravity Score (UGS) measures
UGS (UHNW Gravity Score) = a market’s forecast UHNW growth, 2026–2031 ÷ global forecast UHNW growth (32.9%), using Knight Frank’s published country and global forecasts.
A UGS above 1.00 means the market’s share of the world’s ultra-wealthy is rising; below 1.00, it is shrinking even if headcount grows. Mathematically, UGS equals a market’s share of global net UHNW additions divided by its share of the 2026 stock — so it reads directly as “how much more than its weight a market captures.” Anyone can recompute every score from the inputs below.

What the Gravity Score says that growth rates do not
Three readings matter for anyone allocating a relationship-manager budget.
The US is the only market with both a UGS above 1.5 and a share of net additions above 5%. It is not a mature market losing ground to emerging ones; it is a 35%-share market pulling toward 41%. One in every 1.7 new ultra-wealthy individuals through 2031 is forecast to be American.
India and Hong Kong score below 1.00. Both will add UHNWIs — 5,340 and 1,697 — yet both lose share of the global pool. India’s 2021–2026 surge of 63% is already in the base; Knight Frank’s forecast decelerates to 26.9%.
Australia is the overlooked middle. A UGS of 1.78 on a base of 16,460 makes it the second-largest absolute contributor in the table after the US, at 9,635 net new UHNWIs — more than Germany (8,789) or India (5,340), each from a far larger base. Knight Frank notes the 2031 count equals almost one in every 1,000 Australian residents.
Sarah Davis on reading the Gravity Score: The Gulf headline is Saudi Arabia’s UGS of 1.92, but the region as a whole scores 0.98 — essentially holding its share, which is what Knight Frank’s 3.1%-in-2026, 3.1%-in-2031 forecast says too. If your booking centre is pitching “Middle East growth,” the money is concentrated in one kingdom, not spread across the GCC.
How Rich Are the Ultra-Wealthy on Average?

| $30M+ (UHNW) | 556,850 | $63.8T | Altrata |
| $1B+ (billionaires) | 3,428 | $20.1T | Forbes |
Billionaires are 0.62% of UHNW headcount and hold 31.5% of UHNW net worth, Axis Intelligence Research estimates — a cross-source figure mixing Forbes’ March 2026 snapshot with Altrata’s year-end 2025 base, so read it as an order of magnitude. Forbes counts a record 3,428 billionaires worth $20.1 trillion; Knight Frank’s 2026 model counts 3,110.
How Do Ultra High Net Worth Individuals Invest Their Money?
| Asset bucket (average UHNW portfolio) | Share | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Publicly owned holdings | 36.8% | Altrata |
| Liquid assets (cash, income, liquid financial investments) | 28.7% | Altrata |
| Privately owned holdings | 25.9% | Altrata |
| Real estate and luxury assets | 8.6% | Altrata |
Public plus private business holdings total 62.7% — the “founder’s balance sheet.” That is the structural reason four in ten UHNW dollars are investable and six are not.
Capgemini’s January 2026 survey of 6,510 HNWIs, 41% of whom sit in the $30M+ band, shows the broader allocation: equities 25%, cash 24%, fixed income 20%, real estate 19%, alternatives 12%. Its survey also finds 88% of HNWIs work with several wealth managers specifically to reach better alternative investments, and that single-provider relationships fell from 39% in 2019 to 19% in 2025.
Sarah Davis on the advice gap: Alternatives fell to 12% of HNWI portfolios while 68% of the same clients say they want more private equity. That is not a contradiction — it is a denominator effect from a 25% equity weight, and it is also an access problem. The client multi-banking to get into a fund is quietly telling the incumbent its shelf is too thin.
Who Are the Ultra-Wealthy? Age, Gender and Source of Wealth
| Characteristic | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average age, global UHNW | 67 | Altrata |
| Share under 50 / aged 70+ | 8.2% / 39.8% | Altrata |
| Women, share of UHNWIs (2026 → 2040f) | 11.9% → 19.1% | Altrata |
| Self-made share: North America / Europe / Asia | 80.4% / 67.2% / 65.6% | Altrata |
| Foreign-born UHNWIs | 19.6% | Altrata |
| Hold a business stake outside home country | 17% | Altrata |
| Billionaires who are self-made / women | 67% / 14% | Forbes |
Roughly 220,000 UHNWIs are 70 or older, per Altrata. For wealth managers, that is the most concrete measure of the intergenerational transfer pipeline: the assets are already identified and the event date is actuarial.
What Do the Ultra-Wealthy Spend, Give and Buy?
| Metric | Value | Year | Source |
|---|---|---|---|

| Family offices worldwide | ~10,000 | 2026 | Knight Frank |
Ultra High Net Worth vs. Millionaires: How Does the Wider Base Compare?
The ultra-wealthy sit atop a millionaire base that is itself expanding. UBS’s Global Wealth Report 2026 finds the number of USD millionaires rose 1.5% in 2025 — more than 2,600 a day — with the US adding more than 440,000. Global personal wealth rose 10.8%. Capgemini counts 25.3 million HNWIs by investable assets holding $98.3 trillion; Altrata counts 50.9 million by net worth.

Ultra High Net Worth FAQ
What net worth makes someone ultra high net worth?
$30 million. Knight Frank, Altrata and Capgemini all use $30 million as the UHNW threshold, but Knight Frank and Altrata apply it to net worth, while Capgemini applies it to investable assets excluding the primary residence.
Is $30 million of net worth the same as $30 million to invest?
No. Altrata estimates UHNWIs hold $26 trillion investable against $63.8 trillion net worth; Axis Intelligence Research calculates the investable share at 40.8%. Many people above $30 million of net worth have under $30 million they could hand to a manager.
Which is the most reliable count of UHNWIs?
None is “the” count. Use Altrata (556,850) or Knight Frank (713,626) when sizing who is ultra-wealthy; use Capgemini (~250,000) when sizing who can be served with $30 million or more in managed assets. Axis Intelligence Research’s UMDR of 1.28 quantifies the gap between the two net-worth models.
Which country is gaining ultra-wealthy residents fastest?
Indonesia, by rate: Knight Frank forecasts 81.7% growth to 2031, a UHNW Gravity Score of 2.48. The United States, by volume: 136,070 net new UHNWIs, or 58.0% of the global total, per Axis Intelligence Research.
How much is a $30 million threshold in 2005 dollars?
Altrata calculates that $19.2 million in 2005 carried the same purchasing power as $30 million in 2025. Measured in real terms, the US had 77 UHNWIs per 100,000 adults in 2025, up from 44 in 2005.
Are the ultra-wealthy mostly self-made?
Yes, in every major region. Altrata puts the self-made share at 80.4% in North America, 67.2% in Europe and 65.6% in Asia. Forbes reports 67% of 2026 billionaires as self-made.
How many UHNWIs are centi-millionaires?
More than 117,000 people held over $100 million of net worth in 2025, nearly double the 60,000 of 2015, per Altrata. Axis Intelligence Research calculates that as 21.0% of the UHNW population.
Does the Middle East have a growing UHNW population?
Slowly, and unevenly. Altrata recorded 4.4% UHNW growth in the Middle East in 2025, the weakest of any region, and Capgemini recorded a 1.4% fall in Middle East HNWIs. Knight Frank holds the region at 3.1% of global UHNWIs through 2031, with Saudi Arabia (UGS 1.92) carrying the growth.
Methodology
Data collection. Axis Intelligence Research fetched and read five primary publications between their release and October 1, 2026: Knight Frank’s The Wealth Report 2026, Altrata’s World Ultra Wealth Report 2026, Capgemini Research Institute’s World Wealth Report 2026 and its June 4, 2026 press release, the UBS Global Wealth Report 2026 media release of June 30, 2026, and Forbes’ World’s Billionaires List 2026 (net worth as of March 1, 2026). Every figure in this article is a row in the downloadable CSV, with source URL and retrieval date. Secondary summaries and other aggregators were not used as sources.
Definitions. UHNW = $30 million or more. Knight Frank and Altrata measure net worth; Capgemini measures investable assets excluding primary residence, collectibles, consumables and consumer durables. Figures from different models are shown side by side, never averaged.

- UHNW Gravity Score (UGS) = (market UHNW count 2031f ÷ 2026 − 1) ÷ 0.329. Regional UGS uses Knight Frank’s published regional growth rates.
- Implied 2031 global UHNW population = 713,626 × 1.329 = 948,409; implied net additions = 234,783.
- Share of global net additions = (market 2031f − 2026) ÷ 234,783.
- UHNW Model Divergence Ratio (UMDR) = Knight Frank count ÷ Altrata count, same threshold, latest editions.
- Average net worth / investable assets = Altrata totals ÷ 556,850.
- Capgemini tier averages = tier share of HNWI wealth × $98.3T ÷ tier population.
What to keep in mind. Knight Frank publishes full 2026 and 2031 counts only for its 20 fastest-growing markets, so UGS covers those markets plus six regions. Altrata’s 117,000 centi-millionaire figure is a stated floor. Cross-source ratios (billionaire share of UHNW wealth, UMDR) combine different snapshot dates and are labeled as estimates.
About This Dataset
ultra-high-net-worth-statistics.csv contains 292 observations on the global ultra-high-net-worth population: counts, wealth, growth and forecasts by world, region, country and metro area from Knight Frank, Altrata, Capgemini, UBS and Forbes, spanning 2004–2040 forecasts, plus Axis Intelligence Research’s UHNW Gravity Score and UHNW Model Divergence Ratio. Each row carries source organization, document, URL, retrieval date, a primary-source flag, an Axis-calculated flag and, for calculated rows, the formula.
