Prices verified on October 2, 2026. Apple fees are U.S. out-of-warranty estimates before tax. Apple inspects every device and sets the final fee at the counter.
Apple now charges $129 to replace the battery in an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max, the highest out-of-warranty battery fee it has ever listed for an iPhone. Across the current lineup, the iPhone battery replacement cost runs from $69 to $129 at Apple, and from $0 if AppleCare+ applies and battery health is below 80%.
Quick Answer: How Much Does an iPhone Battery Replacement Cost?
At Apple in the U.S., an iPhone battery replacement costs $129 (iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max), $119 (iPhone 16 Pro, 17 Pro, their Max models, and iPhone Air), $99 (iPhone 14 through iPhone 17 standard models), $89 (iPhone X to 13) and $69 (iPhone 8, SE and earlier). After average state and local sales tax, the $129 fee becomes roughly $138.71, according to Axis Intelligence Research.
Key Findings
- Apple raised the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max out-of-warranty battery fee to $129, up $10 from the $119 charged for iPhone 16 Pro and 17 Pro models, per Apple’s repair page as recorded by MacRumors on September 17, 2026.
- Axis Intelligence Research’s Battery Service Burden Index (BSBI) finds Apple prices a Pro battery swap at almost exactly a tenth of the phone: 10.76% of launch price for the iPhone 18 Pro and 9.93% for the 18 Pro Max.
- Per unit of capacity restored, the iPhone 18 Pro Max battery is actually 3.0% cheaper to replace than the 17 Pro Max ($23.93 vs $24.67 per 1,000 mAh), according to Axis Intelligence Research’s Restored-Capacity Cost (RCC).
- In Louisiana, the highest combined sales-tax state, a $129 Apple battery swap reaches $142.07 if the fee is fully taxable — a $13.07 gap versus Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire and Delaware, per Axis Intelligence Research calculations on Tax Foundation July 2026 rates.
- Apple’s own Self Service Repair saves only $8.12 on an iPhone 16 Pro Max battery once the $49 tool rental is counted, while a third-party iFixit kit at $54.99 costs 54% less than Apple’s $119 fee, per Axis Intelligence Research.
iPhone Battery Replacement Cost by Model (Apple, U.S., 2026)
Apple stopped publishing a static price list. Its Apple Service and Repair for iPhone page now loads every fee through a script-driven estimator, which is why so many repair pages online contradict each other — some still show $89 for an iPhone 13, others show $99, a few still quote $69. We rebuilt the table from the most recent contemporaneous record of Apple’s own estimator for each tier, and dated every row.

[older data]: these tiers have not been re-reported since the last Apple change that touched them, and Apple’s estimator cannot be archived as text. Run your own model through the Apple estimator before you book; Apple notes it will inspect your device to determine the final fee.
Two things jump out of that table, and neither is the headline number.
The first is that the price ladder no longer tracks age. An iPhone 14 from 2022 and an iPhone 17 from 2025 sit on the same $99 rung. What decides your fee is which class of phone you bought — base, Air, or Pro — not how old it is.
The second is that the iPhone Air is priced like a Pro. It carries the $119 fee, not the $99 of the iPhone 17 it shares a launch year with. If you bought the Air for its price, budget the battery like a Pro owner.
How Much Is an iPhone 18 Pro Battery Replacement?
$129 for both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max, out of warranty, according to Apple’s repair page as recorded by MacRumors on September 17, 2026. With AppleCare+, Apple replaces the battery at no extra charge once capacity drops below 80%, per the Apple battery service page.
How Much Is an iPhone 17 or iPhone 16 Pro Battery Replacement?
$119 for the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. $99 for the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 16. The $119 Pro fee has held since September 2024.
How Much Is an iPhone 13, 12 or 11 Battery Replacement?
$89 for every model from iPhone X through iPhone 13, the price Apple set when it raised older-model battery fees by $20 on March 1, 2023.
Why the iPhone 18 Pro Battery Costs More: The Fee-vs-Capacity Math
Apple has not explained the $10 increase. MacRumors noted the 18 Pro models carry larger batteries, and Apple’s EU tech specifications (via 9to5Mac) list 4,056 mAh for the iPhone 18 Pro and 5,391 mAh for the 18 Pro Max, up from 3,988 mAh and 4,823 mAh on the 17 Pro models.
So the obvious question: did the fee rise faster than the battery grew? Axis Intelligence Research built a metric to answer it.
Restored-Capacity Cost (RCC) = Apple out-of-warranty fee ÷ (rated capacity in mAh ÷ 1,000). It tells you what Apple charges per 1,000 mAh of fresh capacity it puts back in your phone.
| Model | Apple fee | Rated capacity | RCC ($ per 1,000 mAh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $129 | 5,391 mAh | $23.93 |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | $119 | 4,823 mAh | $24.67 |
| iPhone 17 Pro | $119 | 3,988 mAh | $29.84 |
| iPhone 18 Pro | $129 | 4,056 mAh | $31.80 |
Sources: fees per Apple’s repair page (recorded by MacRumors, Sep 17, 2026); capacities per Apple EU tech specs (recorded by 9to5Mac, Sep 17, 2026); RCC calculated by Axis Intelligence Research. EU-spec capacities; U.S. eSIM-only units may carry different cells.
The two Pro phones tell opposite stories. On the 18 Pro Max, capacity grew 11.8% while the fee grew 8.4% — the swap is cheaper per milliamp-hour than last year’s. On the smaller 18 Pro, capacity grew just 1.7% against the same 8.4% fee jump, pushing RCC up 6.6%. If you’re an 18 Pro owner, the “bigger battery” explanation mostly doesn’t apply to you.
That’s the gap in the coverage so far: the $10 headline lands identically on both phones, but only one of them got $10 worth of extra battery.
The Battery Service Burden Index (BSBI): What a New Battery Costs Relative to the Phone
A $129 swap reads differently on a $1,299 phone than on a $699 one. The Battery Service Burden Index (BSBI) — an Axis Intelligence Research metric — expresses Apple’s out-of-warranty battery fee as a percentage of the model’s base launch price.
BSBI = Apple out-of-warranty battery fee ÷ base-storage U.S. launch price × 100
| Model | Apple fee | Launch price (base storage) | BSBI |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro | $119 | $1,099 | 10.83 |
| iPhone 18 Pro | $129 | $1,199 | 10.76 |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | $119 | $1,199 | 9.92 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $129 | $1,299 | 9.93 |
Sources: fees as above; iPhone 18 Pro launch prices per MacRumors (Sep 9, 2026); iPhone 17 Pro prices derived from the $100 year-over-year increase MacRumors reported in the same article. BSBI calculated by Axis Intelligence Research.
Here’s what the index shows: Apple raised the phone by $100 and the battery by $10, and the ratio barely moved. The 18 Pro Max reads 9.93 against 9.92 a year earlier. Whether by design or not, Apple’s Pro battery fee behaves like a tenth of the sticker price — which gives owners a useful rule of thumb for future models. When the iPhone 19 Pro prices land, multiply by 0.1 and you’ll be close.
BSBI is computed only for models where both the fee and the launch price are documented from the same reporting window; the index will extend to standard and Air models as their launch-price records are verified.
iPhone Battery Replacement Cost by State (With Sales Tax)
Apple’s estimator states its fees may be subject to tax. How much depends on where you live — and whether your state taxes repair services at all, which varies. The table below shows the ceiling: the out-the-door price if the full fee is taxed at the average combined state and local rate.
Formula: tax-inclusive fee = Apple fee × (1 + combined state and local sales tax rate). Rates: Tax Foundation, State and Local Sales Tax Rates, Midyear 2026 (as of July 1, 2026).
| State | Combined rate | $129 fee (iPhone 18 Pro) | $119 fee (16/17 Pro, Air) | $99 fee (iPhone 14–17) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Louisiana | 10.13% | $142.07 | $131.05 | $109.03 |
| Tennessee | 9.61% | $141.40 | $130.44 | $108.51 |
| Washington | 9.57% | $141.35 | $130.39 | $108.47 |
| Arkansas | 9.48% | $141.23 | $130.28 | $108.39 |
| Alabama | 9.46% | $141.20 | $130.26 | $108.37 |
| Oklahoma | 9.06% | $140.69 | $129.78 | $107.97 |
| California | 9.03% | $140.65 | $129.75 | $107.94 |
| Illinois | 8.98% | $140.58 | $129.69 | $107.89 |
| New York | 8.54% | $140.02 | $129.16 | $107.45 |
| Texas | 8.20% | $139.58 | $128.76 | $107.12 |
| Florida | 6.98% | $138.00 | $127.31 | $105.91 |
| U.S. average | 7.53% | $138.71 | $127.96 | $106.45 |
| Alaska | 1.82% | $131.35 | $121.17 | $100.80 |
| Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon | 0.00% | $129.00 | $119.00 | $99.00 |
All 51 jurisdictions (50 states + DC) are in the downloadable dataset. Calculated by Axis Intelligence Research. Local rates vary by city; Chicago, for instance, sits well above the Illinois average.
The spread between the most and least expensive state is $13.07 on an iPhone 18 Pro. That’s not a reason to drive across a state line. It is a reason to stop comparing an untaxed independent-shop quote against Apple’s pre-tax $129 as if they were the same number.
Apple vs Self Service Repair vs DIY Kit: The Fully Loaded Cost
Three routes get a battery into an iPhone 16 Pro Max (the newest Pro model with complete parts pricing across all three channels). Here they are with every dollar counted.
| Route | Sticker | Hidden costs | All-in cost | vs Apple |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Store or mail-in | $119 | Tax; 90-day service guarantee included | $119.00 | — |
| Apple Self Service Repair | $119 battery kit | −$57.12 returned-part credit; +$49 tool rental | $110.88 | −$8.12 |
| iFixit Fix Kit (third-party cell) | $54.99 | Tools included; no Apple part pairing | $54.99 | −$64.01 |
Sources: Apple fee as above; Self Service kit price and $61.88 net-after-credit figure per PhoneArena’s record of the Apple Self Service Repair Store; $49 tool rental per Apple Newsroom; iFixit price per the iFixit iPhone 16 Pro Max battery page, retrieved Oct 2, 2026. All-in costs calculated by Axis Intelligence Research.
The Self Service Repair number is the one that should change minds. Once you rent the tools, Apple’s DIY route saves $8.12 — and you do the work, return the old cell, and wait for the credit. For a one-off repair it’s barely a discount. It only makes sense if you already own the tools or are fixing several phones.
The iFixit route halves the bill, with real trade-offs: a non-Apple cell, and on iPhone 12 and later, iOS can flag a part it doesn’t recognize. Whether $64 is worth that depends on how long you plan to keep the phone and whether resale value matters to you.
Independent repair shops sit between the two. Their prices vary by city and by whether they stock genuine or aftermarket cells; get a written quote that names the battery source and the warranty length before you compare it to Apple.
Is AppleCare+ Worth It Just for the Battery?
Short answer: not on battery alone.
AppleCare+ for an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air costs $139.99 a year (or $13.99 a month), per Tom’s Guide at the iPhone 17 launch; the standard iPhone 17 plan is $119.99 a year. Two years of Pro coverage at the annual rate is $279.98. That buys you about 2.17 out-of-warranty battery swaps at today’s $129 Pro fee — and nobody needs two batteries in two years.
There’s a second, less obvious problem. Apple designs iPhone 15 and later batteries to keep 80% of original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions (iPhone 14 and earlier: 500 cycles), per Apple as cited by AppleInsider. AppleCare+ only pays for a battery once health is below 80%.
Axis Intelligence Research estimates that a user running exactly one full charge cycle per day would reach 1,000 cycles after about 2.7 years (1,000 ÷ 365). Under Apple’s design target, that means a newer iPhone’s battery may not cross the 80% line until after a two-year AppleCare+ term ends. Real-world wear varies with heat, fast charging and usage — some batteries cross sooner — but the math says the battery benefit alone rarely justifies the plan. Buy AppleCare+ for drops and cracked screens; treat the free battery as a bonus.
Replace the Battery or Upgrade? The Cost Per Extra Year
This is the decision most people searching “iPhone battery replacement cost” are actually making.
Apple offers the iPhone 18 Pro through its Upgrade program starting at $34.99 a month over 24 months, per MacRumors — $419.88 a year. A $129 battery that keeps an otherwise healthy phone going two more years costs $64.50 per added year.
Axis Intelligence Research finds a battery swap costs about 15% of one year of Apple Upgrade payments ($64.50 ÷ $419.88).
Alex Rivera’s verdict: if the phone’s only problem is the battery and it still gets iOS updates, replace the battery. The math isn’t close. Upgrade when the camera, the chip, or the software support window — not the battery — is what’s holding you back.
What Moves the iPhone Battery Replacement Price
Model class, not model age. As the table shows, Apple prices by base/Air/Pro tier. An old Pro can cost more to service than a newer base model.
AppleCare+ status and battery health. Below 80% with active AppleCare+: $0. Above 80% with AppleCare+: you generally can’t get a free swap, even if the battery feels tired.
Inspection. Apple’s estimate assumes nothing else is wrong. If a technician finds other damage that blocks the repair — a cracked back, a swollen cell that damaged the frame — the quote can change. Apple states it will determine the final fee after inspection.
Channel. Apple Store, mail-in, Apple Authorized Service Provider (which can set its own fees, per Apple), Self Service Repair, or independent shop.
Tax and shipping. Sales tax varies by state as shown above, and Apple notes a shipping fee may be added if it needs to ship your device.
The fee itself keeps climbing at the top. The Pro-tier fee went from $99 (iPhone 15 Pro) to $119 (iPhone 16 Pro) to $129 (iPhone 18 Pro): a 30.3% increase in two model years.
Battery Questions iPhone Owners Ask Before Booking a Repair
Will Apple replace my battery for free at 81% battery health?
No. With AppleCare+, the free replacement starts below 80% maximum capacity, per Apple. At 81%, you’d pay the out-of-warranty fee for your model. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health first.
Is the $129 iPhone 18 Pro battery fee the final price?
It’s an estimate before tax. Apple inspects every device and sets the final fee; tax applies in most states, and a shipping fee may apply for mail-in repairs. With average U.S. sales tax, expect about $138.71.
Why does an iPhone Air battery cost $119 when the iPhone 17 costs $99?
Apple places the Air in its $119 tier alongside the Pro models. Apple hasn’t published a reason. Budget the Air like a Pro phone.
Does a third-party battery break Face ID or other features?
A battery swap doesn’t touch Face ID hardware. On iPhone 12 and later, iOS may show a notice that it can’t verify a non-genuine battery, and battery health readings can be affected. Genuine Apple parts through Apple, an authorized provider or Self Service Repair avoid that notice.
Is it cheaper to replace an iPhone battery in a state with no sales tax?
On a $129 fee, the maximum saving is $13.07 versus Louisiana, and only if your home state taxes repair services. For most people that won’t cover the trip.
How long does an Apple battery replacement take?
In-store repairs are often same-day when parts are in stock, but Apple doesn’t publish a guaranteed time; mail-in adds shipping in both directions. Book a Genius Bar appointment rather than walking in.
Will the battery fee go up again on the iPhone 19?
Unknown. The BSBI suggests Apple’s Pro battery fee has tracked roughly 10% of launch price for two generations. If that ratio holds and the iPhone 19 Pro price rises, the fee may follow; if the price holds, the fee likely will too.
Methodology
Data assembly. Axis Intelligence Research compiled Apple’s U.S. out-of-warranty iPhone battery fees from the most recent contemporaneous records of Apple’s repair-price estimator, because the estimator at support.apple.com is script-rendered and cannot be captured as text. For each tier we used the newest available record and labeled its date; tiers older than six months are flagged.
Calculated metrics.
- Battery Service Burden Index (BSBI) = Apple fee ÷ base-storage launch price × 100.
- Restored-Capacity Cost (RCC) = Apple fee ÷ (rated mAh ÷ 1,000), using Apple EU tech-spec capacities.
- Tax-inclusive fee = Apple fee × (1 + Tax Foundation combined state and local rate, July 1, 2026). This is a ceiling: some states exempt or partly exempt repair labor.
- Self Service all-in = kit price − returned-part credit + $49 tool rental.
- AppleCare+ break-even = 2 × annual plan price ÷ battery fee.
- Cycle-time estimate = 1,000 design cycles ÷ 365 days, assuming one full cycle per day under Apple’s ideal-conditions design target. This is an estimate, not a measured result.
What this dataset does not include. Independent repair-shop prices, which vary by location and parts source; non-U.S. fees; and models whose launch prices could not be matched to the same reporting window.
