Consumers filed 1,787,623 complaints about TransUnion with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) between January 1 and September 30, 2026, more than about any other company. Axis Intelligence Research finds that TransUnion overtook Equifax in 2026, while FICO royalties now make up 43.3% of every dollar TransUnion bills for a mortgage credit file.

Quick Answer

TransUnion reported $4,576.3 million of revenue in 2025, up 9.4%, and $1,309.6 million in Q2 2026, up 14.9%, according to its earnings releases. It guides 2026 revenue to $5,127–$5,162 million. Axis Intelligence Research estimates that about one dollar in four of that 2026 growth is FICO score royalties TransUnion collects and passes on at no margin.

Key Findings

  1. TransUnion revenue reached $4,576.3 million in 2025, up from $4,183.8 million in 2024, and net income attributable to TransUnion rose to $455.4 million from $284.4 million, per its Q4 2025 earnings release.
  2. Axis Intelligence Research finds that TransUnion’s Score Royalty Pass-Through Ratio (SRPR) rose from 32.9% in Q2 2025 to 43.3% in Q2 2026: FICO’s royalty is now 43 cents of each mortgage revenue dollar.
  3. Axis Intelligence Research estimates that FICO royalties account for 25.0% of TransUnion’s guided 2026 revenue growth, $142 million of $568.2 million at the guidance midpoint.
  4. Axis Intelligence Research finds that TransUnion received 37.0% of all CFPB complaints filed about the three nationwide credit bureaus from January to September 2026, up from 34.3% in 2025.
  5. Axis Intelligence Research finds that TransUnion’s Bureau Dispute Relief Rate fell from 87.28% in 2024 to 64.43% in 2025 and 40.67% for complaints received January–September 2026, per the Axis registry snapshot of October 25, 2026.

How Much Revenue Does TransUnion Make?

TransUnion generated $4,576.3 million in revenue in 2025, a 9.4% increase, or 9.1% on an organic constant-currency basis, which strips out exchange-rate moves and the first year of acquisitions (TransUnion Q4 2025 earnings release, February 12, 2026). Net income attributable to TransUnion rose 60% to $455.4 million, diluted earnings per share went from $1.45 to $2.32, and adjusted diluted EPS reached $4.30.

The 2026 numbers are bigger, and noisier. Second-quarter revenue was $1,309.6 million, up 14.9% reported and 10.1% organic. Strip out FICO mortgage royalties and organic growth was 7% (Q2 2026 earnings release, July 28, 2026). First-half net income of $540.5 million includes a one-time, non-taxable $225.5 million gain from remeasuring the stake TransUnion already owned in Trans Union de México when it bought control.

What is TransUnion’s 2026 guidance?

On July 28, 2026, TransUnion raised full-year guidance to $5,127–$5,162 million of revenue (12% to 13% growth) and adjusted diluted EPS of $4.75–$4.83. Acquisitions add about 4 points of that growth and FICO mortgage royalties about 3 points, per the company. For the third quarter it guided to $1,292–$1,310 million. TransUnion has scheduled its Q3 2026 results for October 27, 2026.

Sarah Davis, Digital Finance: The reported margin is falling and the business is getting more profitable at the same time. Both statements are true. TransUnion guides its 2026 adjusted EBITDA margin to 35.4% at the high end, but 37.8% once FICO’s royalty is taken out of the mortgage line, per its Q2 investor deck. The gap is a fee collected on someone else’s behalf, booked as revenue, passed on at zero margin. Anyone comparing bureau margins quarter to quarter in 2026 is mostly measuring FICO’s price list.

How Much of TransUnion’s Mortgage Revenue Goes to FICO?

In Q2 2026, TransUnion booked $208 million of U.S. mortgage revenue, of which $90 million was FICO royalty cost, according to its Q2 2026 investor presentation. A year earlier the split was $152 million and $50 million. TransUnion expects about $750 million of mortgage revenue in 2026, including about $325 million of FICO royalties, against $589 million and $183 million in 2025.

The royalty is the fee FICO charges for each FICO Score a bureau calculates inside a mortgage credit file. FICO’s October 2025 pricing set a $10 per-score fee under its traditional model, or $4.95 per score plus a $33 fee per borrower, per score, on funded loans under its performance model (FICO announcement, October 1, 2025).

The Score Royalty Pass-Through Ratio (SRPR)

The Score Royalty Pass-Through Ratio (SRPR) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric. It measures how much of TransUnion’s mortgage revenue is FICO’s money rather than TransUnion’s:

SRPR = FICO mortgage royalty cost ÷ TransUnion U.S. mortgage revenue

PeriodMortgage revenueFICO royalty costRevenue less royaltySRPRSource

SRPR rose 12.3 percentage points from 2025 to the 2026 forecast, then held almost flat at 43.3% in both 2026 quarters and in the full-year forecast. That stability is what a fixed per-score price looks like on a revenue line.

How much of TransUnion’s growth is FICO royalty?

Axis Intelligence Research divided the year-over-year increase in FICO royalty cost by the increase in TransUnion’s total reported revenue:

  • Q2 2026: ($90M − $50M) ÷ ($1,309.6M − $1,139.7M) = $40M ÷ $169.9M = 23.54%
  • H1 2026: ($48M + $40M) ÷ ($2,555.3M − $2,235.5M) = $88M ÷ $319.8M = 27.52%
  • FY2026 forecast: ($325M − $183M) ÷ ($5,144.5M guidance midpoint − $4,576.3M) = $142M ÷ $568.2M = 24.99%

FICO royalties were 4.0% of TransUnion’s total revenue in 2025 and are on track for 6.32% in 2026, both Axis Intelligence Research calculations.

What happened to price per mortgage inquiry?

TransUnion’s mortgage inquiries rose 7% in Q1 2026 and fell 7% in Q2 2026, per its investor decks. Royalty cost still rose 107% and 80%. Axis Intelligence Research estimates that the FICO royalty per TransUnion mortgage inquiry rose about 93% year over year in both quarters: (93 ÷ 45) ÷ 1.07 − 1 = 93.1% in Q1, and (90 ÷ 50) ÷ 0.93 − 1 = 93.5% in Q2. The same arithmetic on TransUnion’s own share of the revenue gives +15.4% in Q1 and +24.4% in Q2.

Sarah Davis, Digital Finance: Everyone in mortgage has spent eighteen months yelling at FICO, and the numbers say the anger is pointed at the right line item. A roughly 93% jump in royalty per pull means FICO nearly doubled its take on every mortgage file TransUnion pulled, in a year when pulls fell. The quieter detail is the second number. TransUnion’s own take per inquiry also rose double digits while volume fell. The tri-merge is a toll road with two booths, and both raised prices this year. One just does it in public.

How cheap is VantageScore 4.0 at TransUnion?

TransUnion prices a standalone VantageScore 4.0 mortgage origination score at $0.99, through December 2028, and includes it at no extra charge for lenders that buy a FICO Score from TransUnion. It first announced the 99-cent price on March 9, 2026, estimating more than $900 million in potential savings for lenders and consumers (company estimate), and extended it through 2028 on September 29, 2026 (TransUnion newsroom). More than 1,100 mortgage lenders adopted VantageScore 4.0 at TransUnion between January and September 2026, including 9 of its 15 largest mortgage customers (company-reported). TransUnion defines adoption as lenders taking up the score, not loans closed with it. VantageScore was included in about 30% of TransUnion’s mortgage credit pulls by Q2 2026, against under 5% at the start of the year, per the Q2 deck.

For how scores drive mortgage pricing, see Axis’s credit score statistics and mortgage statistics.

How Does TransUnion Make Money? Revenue by Segment

TransUnion reports two segments. U.S. Markets sells credit, marketing and fraud data to lenders (Financial Services), to insurers, retailers, telecoms and other industries (Emerging Verticals), and to consumers (Consumer Interactive). International runs bureaus in Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Africa, India and Asia Pacific. U.S. Markets produced 78.0% of 2025 gross revenue, International 22.0%, both Axis Intelligence Research calculations.

What does TransUnion sell: credit, fraud or marketing?

Credit products were 56% of TransUnion’s 2025 revenue, fraud 16%, consumer products 15% and marketing 11%, per the Q2 2026 investor deck. Outside the United States, credit is 71% of the mix. Inside it, the non-credit share is larger: fraud 17%, consumer 16% and marketing 13%.

Sarah Davis, Digital Finance: Consumer Interactive is the segment to watch for anyone who uses Credit Karma or a breach-monitoring code. 73% of it is indirect, meaning partners pay TransUnion to serve their customers, and it shrank in 2025 and again in Q2 2026 as demand for paid credit products slowed, per the 10-Q. A bureau’s consumer business increasingly lives off other companies’ breaches and other apps’ users, which is a strange place to find growth.

How Many Complaints Does TransUnion Get?

TransUnion received 1,604,549 CFPB complaints in 2025, up 102.9% from 790,670 in 2024, according to the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database. From January 1 to September 30, 2026, it received 1,787,623, already 111.4% of the full 2025 total. TransUnion alone drew 29.43% of every complaint the CFPB received in 2025 across all companies and products, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation.

Is TransUnion the most complained-about company in 2026?

Yes. In 2025 Equifax led with 1,683,210 complaints to TransUnion’s 1,604,549. In the first nine months of 2026 the order flipped: TransUnion 1,787,623, Equifax 1,531,454, Experian 1,517,980, per CFPB data queried October 25, 2026.

The raw counts behind each share are in the dataset. The 2026 issue mix comes from a second CFPB query run later on October 25, 2026 (1,785,864 complaints in the same window), because the registry snapshot used above does not break out TransUnion issues; the CFPB database revises counts continuously, which explains the small difference. “Information belongs to someone else” usually describes a mixed file, where two people’s records are merged, or identity theft. It covered 669,839 TransUnion complaints in the first nine months of 2026.

Does TransUnion fix errors when you complain?

Less often than it used to. Axis Intelligence Research’s Bureau Dispute Relief Rate (BDRR), first published on our Experian statistics page, divides complaints closed with monetary or non-monetary relief by complaints that have been closed:

BDRR = (closed with non-monetary relief + closed with monetary relief) ÷ (complaints received − complaints in progress)

Jan–Sep 20261,787,623693,1111,010,99983,51340.67%CFPB database; Axis calc.

For comparison, Equifax’s 2025 BDRR was 63.42% and Experian’s 0.44%. TransUnion’s 2026 figure is a snapshot taken October 25, 2026 and will move as the 83,513 complaints still open at that snapshot close.

Sarah Davis, Digital Finance: Volume more than doubled and the relief rate fell by more than half in two years. Part of that is the queue itself: a bureau that relieved 87% of about 2,160 complaints a day is now handling more than 6,500, and triage replaces correction. But “investigation took more than 30 days” went from 5.80% to 9.77% of TransUnion complaints. That sub-issue isn’t a template letter. It’s a clock, and the clock is slipping.

What did the CFPB’s 611(e) report find about TransUnion?

The CFPB’s December 2025 report under Section 611(e) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), covering January 2024 to June 2025, found that TransUnion confirmed a consumer’s prior dispute in about 30% of covered complaints, up from about 5% before 2022. Around 90% of consumers said they had already disputed. TransUnion took about 40 days to respond, against nearly the full 60 days at Experian (CFPB 611(e) report).

Is the CFPB Suing TransUnion? Lawsuits, Consent Orders and Legal Reserves

No CFPB lawsuit is pending against TransUnion, but a CFPB enforcement action over dispute handling remains possible, and the company reports class action lawsuits tied to its 2025 breach. TransUnion’s FY2025 Form 10-K and Q2 2026 Form 10-Q describe three regulatory matters:

MatterKey datesOutcome or statusSource

CFPB and FTC Consent Order on tenant and employment screeningOctober 5, 2023$11.0M redress and $4.0M civil money penalty paid; TransUnion remains subject to the orderTransUnion 10-K FY2025

A NORA (Notice and Opportunity to Respond and Advise) letter is the CFPB’s formal warning that its enforcement staff may recommend legal action. The March 2024 letter alleged that Trans Union LLC failed to reasonably reinvestigate disputed information and to follow reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy, per the 10-K.

TransUnion’s reserve for legal and regulatory matters was $123.5 million at December 31, 2024, $62.2 million at December 31, 2025, and $92.1 million at June 30, 2026. The 2025 drop reflects the $56.0 million reversal after the 2022 lawsuit was dismissed; that reversal is the “legal and regulatory expenses, net” benefit of $56.0 million in TransUnion’s 2025 non-GAAP reconciliation. The 10-Q does not say what drove the $29.9 million increase in the first half of 2026, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation.

Sarah Davis, Digital Finance: Read the open NORA next to the complaint table and the timing is hard to ignore. The CFPB’s enforcement staff got authority in July 2024 to pursue TransUnion over how it handles disputes. Between 2024 and the first nine months of 2026, TransUnion’s relief rate on CFPB complaints fell from 87.28% to 40.67%, and the share closed with an explanation only rose from 12.72% to 59.33%. TransUnion itself says changing its dispute process depends on other bureaus and furnishers moving too. That is a fair point about a shared system, and also a description of why nobody moves first. The 10-Q doesn’t tie the $29.9 million rise in reserves to any single matter, so neither do we. It is still the line to check on October 27.

How Many People Were Affected by the TransUnion Data Breach?

TransUnion LLC notified 4,461,511 people that their personal information was exposed in a breach that occurred on July 28, 2025, according to its filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General. The breach was discovered on July 30, written notices went out on August 26, 2025, and 16,828 of those affected live in Maine. TransUnion offered two years of free myTrueIdentity credit monitoring.

In its FY2025 Form 10-K, TransUnion says an attacker used social engineering to gain access to a third-party application used in its customer support operations, exposing certain personal data of 4.4 million consumers. The company calls the incident not material and says it did not affect its core credit database or credit report products, but that it has incurred and expects to keep incurring costs from regulatory inquiries and class action lawsuits. TechCrunch reported that a notice filed with the Texas Attorney General listed names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers among the exposed data.

The TransUnion breach affected about 3% as many people as Equifax’s 2017 breach (147 million), an Axis Intelligence Research comparison using the figure on our Equifax statistics page. For industry-wide counts, see the data breach statistics and the live data breach tracker.

Sarah Davis, Digital Finance: The credit file wasn’t touched. The help desk was. That is the uncomfortable pattern in 2025’s bureau-adjacent incidents: the most guarded database sits behind the least guarded vendor tool. And a bureau that sells breach-monitoring products to other companies now pays for its own, on its own platform. The 4.46 million notified consumers got TransUnion monitoring for the breach of TransUnion’s vendor.

How Much Did TransUnion Pay for Trans Union de México?

On March 2, 2026, TransUnion paid $659.7 million in cash for about 68% of Trans Union de México, raising its stake from about 26% to about 94%, per the Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. Total purchase consideration, including the remeasured prior stake and the minority interest, was $986.5 million. TransUnion recorded $544.2 million of goodwill and valued the Mexican database and credit files at $459.3 million. The company describes Trans Union de México as Mexico’s largest consumer credit bureau, with about $180 million of 2025 revenue and about 600 million tradelines.

Axis Intelligence Research estimates that the cash price implies about $970 million for 100% of the equity ($659.7M ÷ 0.68), or about 5.4 times 2025 revenue. Equifax agreed in July 2026 to buy rival Mexican bureau Círculo de Crédito at 5.6 times LTM revenue on an enterprise-value basis (see our Equifax page). The two multiples use different bases, equity value versus enterprise value, so we publish them side by side rather than treat them as identical.

Sarah Davis, Digital Finance: Two U.S. bureaus paid roughly the same multiple for Mexico in the same year. That is the market’s verdict on where the next credit file grows: TransUnion says about 90% of its Mexican tradelines are positive-only, so the scoring upside is still ahead. Mexico turned Latin America from TransUnion’s smallest growth story into its fastest reported line, +171.8% in Q2 2026, though only 4.7% of that is organic.

How Many Employees Does TransUnion Have?

TransUnion employed approximately 13,500 people at December 31, 2025, per its FY2025 Form 10-K, in more than 30 countries; its 2026 press releases describe over 13,000 associates. Global Capability Centers in India, South Africa and Costa Rica employ about 42% of the workforce, per the FY2025 Form 10-K. Revenue per associate was about $339,000 in 2025, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation.

TransUnion is the smallest of the three nationwide bureaus by revenue: 24.0% of the big three’s combined latest-fiscal-year revenue, against Experian’s $8,445.0 million and Equifax’s $6,074.5 million (Axis registry figures).

TransUnion Cash Flow, Buybacks and Debt

TransUnion produced $987.6 million of operating cash flow in 2025 and spent $326.0 million on capital expenditures, leaving free cash flow of $661.6 million, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation. It bought back $302.0 million of stock and paid $90.5 million of dividends. In the first half of 2026 it repurchased $115.8 million, with $584.8 million left on its $1.0 billion authorization at June 30. Total debt was $5,585.3 million after borrowing $520 million on its revolver for Mexico, and the leverage ratio held at 2.6x. The company expects about $3 billion of free cash flow from 2026 to 2028 (company-reported).

What would a mortgage recovery be worth to TransUnion?

Industry mortgage originations fell from 7.8 million in 2019 to 5.0 million in 2025, based on TransUnion’s consumer credit database. TransUnion estimates that every 10% rise in mortgage volume adds about $43 million of adjusted EBITDA, and a full return to 2019 volumes about $240 million (company estimates, Q2 2026 deck). TransUnion also reports moving about 60% of U.S. batch credit activity and 30% of online customers to its OneTru platform by mid-2026.

Methodology

Financial data. TransUnion figures come from its Q4 2025 and Q2 2026 earnings releases, its Q1 and Q2 2026 investor presentations (Form 8-K Exhibit 99.2), its Q2 2026 Form 10-Q and its FY2025 Form 10-K, all retrieved on October 25, 2026. Mortgage revenue and FICO royalty figures are company-reported values printed in the investor decks; TransUnion rounds them to the nearest million and labels its 2026 forecast as approximate.

Complaint data. Counts come from the CFPB Consumer Complaint Database search API, queried on October 25, 2026, for the company name TRANSUNION INTERMEDIATE HOLDINGS, INC. and date received. Windows: January 1–December 31, 2024; January 1, 2025–January 1, 2026 (the window used for the canonical 2025 figures on our Equifax and Experian pages); and January 1–September 30, 2026. The 2026 totals, closing categories and peer counts reuse the canonical snapshot published on our Experian page (same window, same day), so the three bureau pages show identical figures.

Axis Intelligence Research formulas:

  • SRPR = FICO mortgage royalty cost ÷ TransUnion U.S. mortgage revenue, per period.
  • Royalty share of growth = year-over-year change in royalty cost ÷ year-over-year change in total reported revenue. The 2026 forecast uses the $5,144.5 million guidance midpoint.
  • Royalty per inquiry = (royalty this year ÷ royalty last year) ÷ (1 + inquiry change) − 1.
  • BDRR = (closed with non-monetary relief + closed with monetary relief) ÷ (received − in progress). Same construction as on our Experian page.
  • Issue shares = issue or sub-issue count ÷ total TransUnion complaints in the period.
  • Mexico implied value = cash consideration ÷ approximate stake acquired.

Reading the figures. SRPR covers U.S. mortgage only; FICO royalties on non-mortgage scores are not disclosed. Royalty per inquiry uses TransUnion’s reported inquiry growth, rounded to whole percentages, so it is an estimate. CFPB complaints are unverified submissions, many filed by third parties, and the closing category is chosen by the company, so BDRR describes how TransUnion labels outcomes, not an audited error rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my mortgage credit report cost more in 2026?

Mostly because of the FICO Score inside it. FICO set a $10 per-score fee for 2026 under its traditional model, and TransUnion’s FICO royalty cost per mortgage inquiry rose about 93% year over year in the first half of 2026, per Axis Intelligence Research’s analysis of TransUnion’s investor decks. A tri-merge report carries three scores, one from each bureau.

Does TransUnion profit from FICO’s price increase?

Not directly. TransUnion treats the royalty as a no-margin pass-through: it bills the lender and pays FICO. Royalties made up 43.3% of its mortgage revenue in Q2 2026, Axis Intelligence Research’s Score Royalty Pass-Through Ratio, up from 32.9% a year earlier. TransUnion’s own mortgage revenue excluding royalties still grew 15% that quarter.

How much does a VantageScore 4.0 mortgage score cost from TransUnion?

TransUnion charges $0.99 per standalone VantageScore 4.0 mortgage origination score through December 2028, and includes it free with a FICO Score purchase, per its September 29, 2026 announcement. VantageScore appeared in about 30% of TransUnion’s mortgage credit pulls by Q2 2026, up from under 5% at the start of the year.

Was my information in the 2025 TransUnion data breach?

If you received a TransUnion letter dated on or after August 26, 2025, yes. TransUnion notified 4,461,511 people about the July 28, 2025 breach of a third-party consumer-support application, per its Maine Attorney General filing. Affected people were offered 24 months of free myTrueIdentity credit monitoring.

Will filing a CFPB complaint get TransUnion to correct my report?

Less reliably than before. For TransUnion complaints received from January to September 2026 and closed by October 25, 2026, 40.67% ended with relief, down from 87.28% in 2024, per Axis Intelligence Research’s Bureau Dispute Relief Rate.

How long does TransUnion take to answer a complaint?

About 40 days on average between January 2024 and mid-2025, according to the CFPB’s December 2025 611(e) report, faster than Experian’s nearly 60. Complaints saying a TransUnion investigation took more than 30 days rose to 9.77% of the total in 2026, from 5.80% in 2024, per CFPB data.

What share of TransUnion’s revenue comes from outside the United States?

International was 22.0% of TransUnion’s 2025 gross revenue, $1,011.0 million, led by the United Kingdom ($269.7 million) and India ($264.2 million), per its Q4 2025 earnings release. The March 2026 purchase of control of Trans Union de México lifted Latin America revenue to $92.7 million in Q2 2026 from $34.1 million.

Is the CFPB investigating TransUnion’s dispute handling?

Yes, though no case has been filed. The CFPB sent TransUnion a NORA letter in March 2024 alleging inadequate dispute reinvestigations, and its enforcement staff obtained authority to sue on July 12, 2024, per TransUnion’s FY2025 10-K. TransUnion says talks paused after CFPB leadership changes. A separate 2022 CFPB lawsuit over credit-monitoring marketing was dismissed with prejudice in March 2025.

When does TransUnion report Q3 2026 results?

TransUnion will publish third-quarter 2026 results on October 27, 2026, with a conference call at 8:30 a.m. Central Time, per the company. It guided Q3 revenue to $1,292–$1,310 million, with FICO mortgage royalties adding about 2 points of growth.
