Apple’s App Store ecosystem generated $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025 — nearly triple its 2019 size — while 850 million people visited it every week across 175 countries. That figure encompasses physical-goods commerce, digital subscriptions, games, and in-app advertising, most of which Apple never touches with a commission fee.
Quick Answer: App Store Statistics 2026 at a Glance
According to Apple and independent research, the App Store ecosystem facilitated over $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025 (Apple/Analysis Group, June 2026), up from $1.3 trillion in 2024. The store hosts approximately 2.46 million apps from over 1 million publishers (42matters, July 2026), with consumer spending on iOS apps reaching $117.6 billion in 2025 (Business of Apps). Apple’s Services segment — of which the App Store is the single largest contributor — generated $109.16 billion in fiscal year 2025 revenue, per Apple’s SEC-filed earnings report.
Key Findings
- The App Store ecosystem facilitated over $1.4 trillion in global developer billings and sales in 2025, with physical goods and services alone accounting for $1.1 trillion of that total, according to a study by economists at Analysis Group commissioned by Apple (June 2026).
- According to Axis Intelligence Research’s calculation combining Apple’s official digital billings figure ($149 billion) with Business of Apps’ consumer spending estimate ($117.6 billion), the gap between “ecosystem billings” and direct consumer spending on apps is approximately $31.4 billion — explained by enterprise licensing, B2B transactions, and in-app advertising revenues not captured in direct IAP metrics.
- Apple reviewed 9.1 million app submissions in 2025, rejected over 2 million of them, and blocked $2.2 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions — adding to a six-year cumulative total of $11.2 billion in prevented fraud (Apple Newsroom, May 2026).
- As of July 12, 2026, the App Store hosts 2,455,761 apps from 1,049,631 publishers, with 94.96% of all apps free to download, according to 42matters’ daily-updated tracker.
- Apps featuring consumer-facing AI capabilities saw 4x more billing growth than other top-100 apps in 2025, according to Apple’s Analysis Group report — making the App Store the clearest signal yet that AI is shifting from standalone tool to embedded feature layer.
How Large Is the App Store Ecosystem?
The word “ecosystem” is doing a lot of work in Apple’s headline figure, and the distinction matters enormously for anyone citing this number.
The $1.4 trillion in 2025 developer billings and sales breaks into three distinct buckets, each with a different economic relationship to Apple. Physical goods and services — grocery orders placed via Instacart, flights booked on Kayak, hotel rooms reserved through Expedia — accounted for $1.1 trillion. Apple facilitates these transactions but takes zero commission; the app developer earns the merchant fee, not Apple. Developer billings and sales for digital goods and services — games, subscriptions, in-app purchases — totaled $149 billion, per Apple’s June 2026 Analysis Group study. In-app advertising revenue placed by developers in their own apps was $151 billion.
So the number a financial analyst cares about — what developers earned on commissioned digital transactions — sits at $149 billion, not $1.4 trillion. That nuance rarely survives the press release cycle, which is why Axis Intelligence Research is spelling it out here.
For context: the $149 billion digital goods figure grew 2.4x since 2019, per the Analysis Group report. In-app advertising grew 2.9x. Physical goods grew 2.8x. Every segment more than doubled in six years, which is the real story inside the headline.

The app count is a third-party estimate; Apple does not publish a live official count. 42matters crawls public App Store listings continuously. The July 12 figure of 2,455,761 is a live snapshot that changes daily as new apps are approved and old ones are removed.
Alex Rivera: The 3,666 new apps per day figure is the one that never gets cited but probably should be. That’s a firehose — and it’s also why App Store Optimization has become a full-time job for anyone who wants organic discovery. The store’s curation isn’t just fraud prevention; it’s the reason any individual app remains findable at all.
How Many People Use the App Store?
According to Apple’s own reporting, the App Store saw over 850 million average weekly users spanning 175 countries and regions in 2025, per Apple’s January 2026 newsroom report on services performance. That number — drawn from Apple’s own first-party infrastructure data — is the most authoritative usage figure available.
For comparison: 850 million weekly users means the App Store reaches roughly 1 in 9 people on Earth every seven days. No third-party app store comes close to that scale. Axis Intelligence Research’s analysis of Apple’s iPhone statistics shows Apple shipped approximately 247 million iPhones in 2025, suggesting a substantial portion of the 850 million weekly figure comes from iPad and Mac users, as well as iPhone users on older devices. See our iPhone statistics page for a full breakdown of the active iOS device base.
Per Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile 2026 report, total iOS app downloads reached approximately 40 billion in 2025 (per-account unique downloads), contributing to a global total of 142.2 billion app and game downloads across iOS and Google Play combined. The iOS share represents roughly 28% of global downloads but approximately 70% of global consumer spending — the persistent monetization gap between the two platforms.
App Store Revenue Statistics
“App Store revenue” appears in at least three distinct forms across industry reports. Axis Intelligence Research uses the following definitions to avoid conflating them:
Ecosystem billings and sales ($1.4 trillion, 2025): Total economic activity flowing through iOS apps, including physical goods. Apple’s broadest metric. Published annually via Analysis Group study commissioned by Apple.
Consumer spending on iOS ($117.6 billion, 2025): Direct payments by users for apps, subscriptions, and in-app purchases on iOS, as estimated by Business of Apps using Sensor Tower data. This is what most analysts mean when they say “App Store revenue.”
Apple Services revenue ($109.16 billion, FY2025): Apple’s consolidated Services segment, of which the App Store is the single largest contributor. This is the figure disclosed in Apple’s SEC filings and includes the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple TV+, Apple Pay, and other services.
Consumer Spending on iOS by Category (2025)
| Category | Revenue (2025) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Games | $51.9 billion | Business of Apps |
| Non-gaming apps | $64.8 billion | Business of Apps |
| Health & fitness apps | ~$6.3 billion | Industry estimates |
| Finance apps | ~$5.6 billion | Industry estimates |
| Entertainment apps | ~$12.5 billion | Industry estimates |
| Shopping apps | ~$9.3 billion | Industry estimates |
| Social networking apps | ~$16.7 billion | Industry estimates |
Note: Category-level consumer spending figures for Health, Finance, Entertainment, Shopping, and Social Networking are aggregated from multiple industry trackers and carry higher uncertainty than the top-line figures from Business of Apps. They are labeled “estimates” accordingly and are not included in the Axis CSV’s verified rows.
The most important trend inside these numbers is the inversion at the top: for the first time in 2025, non-gaming apps ($64.8 billion) outpaced gaming ($51.9 billion) in consumer spending on iOS, per Business of Apps. Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile 2026 report confirmed the same finding across both stores simultaneously: non-game IAP revenue climbed 21% year-over-year globally, while gaming grew only 1.3%. The mobile gaming ceiling, long treated as a permanent revenue floor, is showing its first real pressure from productivity, health, and AI app monetization.

How Many Downloads Does the App Store Get?
App Store Downloads (2025)
| Metric | Value | As-of period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS unique downloads (2025) | ~40 billion | Full year 2025 | Sensor Tower / data.ai |
| Global iOS + Google Play downloads (2025) | 142.2 billion | Full year 2025 | Business of Apps / Sensor Tower |
| iOS share of global downloads | ~28% | Full year 2025 | Axis Intelligence Research calculation* |
| iOS share of global consumer spending | ~70% | Full year 2025 | Sensor Tower State of Mobile 2026 |
| Download growth YoY (iOS + Google Play) | +0.8% | 2024 to 2025 | Sensor Tower |
Axis Intelligence Research calculation: iOS downloads (~40B) ÷ total global downloads (142.2B) = 28.1%. Inputs: Sensor Tower Q1 2026 Mobile App Insights (iOS), Business of Apps App Data 2026 (total). This cross-source calculation combines methodology notes from both providers; treat as an approximation, not an exact figure.
Alex Rivera: The 28% downloads / 70% spending split is the single most important structural fact in the App Store market, and it keeps getting more extreme. Android dominates install volume — especially in India, Brazil, and Southeast Asia — but iOS users spend at multiples. The revenue-per-install gap ($2.28 on iOS vs $0.89 on Android, per industry estimates) is the reason every major app still launches on iOS first despite it being the smaller platform by device count. That gap is strategy, not accident.
What Are the Most Downloaded and Top-Grossing Apps?
Most Downloaded iOS App (2025)
| Rank | App | Downloads (2025) | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ChatGPT | 217 million | AI / Productivity |
| 2 | TikTok | N/A (top globally) | Social / Entertainment |
| 3–10 | Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Spotify, Telegram, Google Maps | — | Various |
Source: Business of Apps App Data Report 2026 for ChatGPT figure; Sensor Tower State of Mobile 2026 for global ranking context. Full ranking by download count for apps ranked 2–10 requires paid Sensor Tower data; top-level rankings are publicly available.
ChatGPT’s 217 million downloads in 2025 made it the most downloaded iOS app of the year — and, per Sensor Tower, the fastest app to reach 1 billion total global downloads across iOS and Google Play by July 2025. That milestone, reached by July 2025, positions AI assistants as a new structural category on the App Store rather than a trend. The milestone matters more than the number: ChatGPT hit 1 billion downloads faster than any non-pre-installed app in App Store history.
Top-Grossing iOS App (2025)
YouTube led iOS consumer revenue with over $2 billion in 2025, followed by TikTok at approximately $2.33 billion (with both tied at the top depending on the measurement window), per Business of Apps and industry tracking. Honor of Kings generated roughly $1.87 billion and Monopoly Go! approximately $1.58 billion, both primarily from in-app purchases.
App Store AI Statistics
Axis Intelligence Research treats AI on the App Store as the single most important structural shift in the platform’s 2025 data, because the numbers are not marginal.
According to Apple’s Analysis Group study, more than 40 of the top 100 apps in 2025 featured consumer-facing AI capabilities. Those AI-enabled apps saw 4x more billing growth than the rest of the top 100. By July 2025, ChatGPT had become the fastest app to reach 1 billion global downloads across iOS and Google Play, per Sensor Tower’s State of AI Apps Report 2025.
Sensor Tower separately reported that generative AI app downloads reached 3.8 billion globally in 2025, with in-app purchase revenue exceeding $5 billion. Time spent in AI apps hit 48 billion hours globally — the fastest-growing time-spent category by percentage.
What does 4x billing growth mean in practice? Apple’s top-100 apps are already the most monetized apps on Earth. A 4x billing advantage within that cohort is not a rounding error — it signals that users are willing to pay meaningfully more for apps that surface AI as a primary feature, not a background one. The health app that recommends a workout. The productivity tool that drafts the email. The photo editor that removes the background automatically. These are not ChatGPT competitors; they are the mainstream of what AI on mobile looks like in 2025, and the billings data is saying they are winning.
App Store Fraud Prevention Statistics
Apple’s fraud prevention infrastructure is the least-cited and most underappreciated part of the App Store story. According to Apple’s annual App Store safety report published May 20, 2026, the full scope of 2025 enforcement was:
App Review (2025)
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| App submissions reviewed | 9.1 million | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Total app submissions rejected | 2+ million | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| New apps rejected | 1.2+ million | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| App updates rejected | ~800,000 | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Apps rejected for privacy violations | 443,000+ | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Apps rejected as spam/copycat/misleading | 371,000+ | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Bait-and-switch apps removed | ~59,000 | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| TestFlight submissions blocked | 2.5+ million | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| New developers welcomed | 306,000 | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
Payment and Account Fraud (2025)
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fraudulent transactions prevented | $2.2+ billion | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Six-year cumulative fraud prevented | $11.2+ billion | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Stolen credit cards blocked | 5.4+ million | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| User accounts banned from transacting | ~2 million | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Fraudulent account creations rejected | 1.1+ billion | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Customer accounts deactivated for abuse | 40.4 million | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Developer accounts terminated | 193,000 | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Developer enrollments rejected | 138,000+ | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Pirate storefront apps blocked | 28,000 | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
Discovery Fraud (2025)
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ratings and reviews processed | 1.3+ billion | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Fraudulent ratings/reviews blocked | ~195 million | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Apps blocked from search results (deceptive) | ~7,800 | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
| Apps blocked from charts (fraudulent) | ~11,500 | Apple Newsroom, May 2026 |
Alex Rivera: The 1.1 billion rejected fake account creations deserves a moment. For context: the entire U.S. Treasury processes roughly 1.3 billion payment transactions per year. Apple is rejecting fraud attempts at approximately that scale on a single consumer platform. The fraud economy targeting the App Store is large enough to destabilize payment systems if it weren’t caught. That is the actual argument for curation — not aesthetics, not developer control, but the volume of the attack surface.
App Store vs. Google Play: Head-to-Head
According to Axis Intelligence Research’s cross-source analysis combining 42matters’ July 2026 live tracker data with Business of Apps’ 2026 App Data Report:
| Metric | Apple App Store | Google Play | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total apps (Jul 2026) | 2,455,761 | 2,429,975 | App Store (marginal) |
| Consumer spending (2025) | $117.6 billion | $49.2 billion | App Store (2.4x) |
| Global downloads (2025) | ~40 billion | ~113 billion | Google Play (2.8x) |
| Revenue per install | ~$2.94 | ~$0.44 | App Store (6.7x) |
| Paid apps share | 5.04% | 2.94% | App Store |
Axis Intelligence Research iOS Revenue Per Install (RPIL) calculation: iOS consumer spending ($117.6B, Business of Apps) ÷ iOS unique downloads (~40B, Sensor Tower) = $2.94 per install. Google Play: $49.2B ÷ 113B = $0.44 per install. Retrieved as of 2025 full-year data. This is an Axis Intelligence Research cross-source calculation; inputs are Sensor Tower (downloads) and Business of Apps (spending). Methodological note: “per install” means per unique first-time download per account. Re-downloads and updates are excluded from denominators. The ratio should be interpreted as relative monetization efficiency, not as revenue attributable to any single install event.
The iOS Revenue Per Install figure is Axis Intelligence Research’s proprietary calculation. No platform or analyst publishes this figure directly. The 6.7x difference between iOS ($2.94) and Google Play ($0.44) explains more about developer economics — why iOS gets priority launches, why iOS versions often receive features first, why iOS app businesses often sustain higher valuations — than any other single number in the App Store market.
Why the Revenue Gap Persists
The monetization advantage is structural, not cyclical. iOS users in mature markets — North America, Western Europe, Japan, Australia — have systematically higher disposable income, higher credit card penetration, and longer platform tenure than the average Android user, whose global base skews toward lower-income markets in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa where Google Play dominates on volume. For detailed market-share data by country and region, see Axis Intelligence Research’s iPhone vs. Android Market Share analysis.
Regional App Store Statistics
Apple’s ecosystem data breaks down regionally in ways the headline figure obscures. Per Apple’s Analysis Group study and Apple Newsroom reporting:
- United States: The U.S. is the largest single iOS revenue market. Consumer app spending in the U.S. approached $60 billion in 2025 (Sensor Tower State of Mobile 2026). Since 2019, billings and sales from the U.S. more than tripled.
- Europe: Billings and sales from Europe more than tripled since 2019 per Apple. The EU Digital Markets Act, effective March 2024, required Apple to permit alternative app stores in the European Economic Area — introducing Mobi Market, AltStore PAL, and others — but their combined install share remains statistically small relative to the official App Store.
- China: Billings and sales from China more than doubled since 2019 per Apple. China is the App Store’s second-largest market by revenue despite restrictions on several categories. In H1 2024 (most recent public country-level data), China led global App Store downloads with over 3.15 billion — above the United States’ nearly 3 billion for the same period, per mac.eltima.com App Store statistics.
- Asia (India, Japan, Korea): Travel is the second-largest physical goods category in Japan; food delivery and pickup ranks second in Korea; grocery ranks second in China. These regional patterns show developers that the App Store is not one market but many, stratified by category and consumer behavior.
Developer Economics: What Do App Store Developers Earn?
Since its 2008 launch, developers worldwide have earned a cumulative total of over $550 billion from the App Store, per Apple’s January 2026 newsroom report. To put that in context: Apple’s total revenue across all products in FY2025 was $416 billion. The cumulative developer payout exceeds Apple’s entire annual revenue by 32%.
The commission structure matters enormously for developer earnings:
- 30% commission applies to large developers (annual revenue over $1 million) on digital goods and services.
- 15% commission (Small Business Program) applies to developers earning under $1 million annually — which covers the vast majority of developers on the platform.
- 0% commission for physical goods and services (the $1.1 trillion category), for reader apps pointing to external subscriptions, and in certain EU-mandated alternative payment scenarios.
Per Apple’s Analysis Group study, over 90% of the $1.4 trillion in 2025 ecosystem billings and sales occurred on transactions where developers paid zero commission to Apple. That 90% figure reflects the dominance of the physical goods category rather than Apple’s generosity with digital commissions — a distinction worth making clearly.
For U.S. developers specifically: the App Store ecosystem in the U.S. facilitated $406 billion in developer billings and sales in 2024 (most recent U.S.-specific figure), per Apple’s May 2025 newsroom report, citing a study by Boston University and Analysis Group. U.S. small developer earnings increased 76% between 2021 and 2024.
App Store iOS Consumer Spending vs. Gaming: The Inversion
For most of the App Store’s history, mobile gaming was the dominant revenue category. 2025 marked the first year that changed.
According to Business of Apps’ 2026 App Data Report:
- Non-gaming app consumer spending: $64.8 billion (2025, iOS)
- Gaming consumer spending: $51.9 billion (2025, iOS)
This is the first time non-gaming apps have exceeded gaming in iOS consumer spending. Sensor Tower’s State of Mobile 2026 confirmed the pattern across both iOS and Google Play combined: non-game IAP revenue climbed 21% year-over-year and reached nearly three times the 2020 figure, while gaming grew only 1.3%. Per Axis Intelligence Research’s analysis, this inversion does not mean gaming is declining in absolute terms — $51.9 billion is still a record — but rather that productivity, health, AI, finance, and entertainment subscription apps have scaled faster.
The category that drove most of that non-gaming growth: subscriptions. Business of Apps estimates iOS subscription revenue at $64.8 billion in 2025, with an average subscription price of $7.93 per month. Approximately 50 million U.S. iOS users are active subscribers, up from estimates of 48 million in prior years.
App Store EU Regulatory Context
The App Store’s competitive landscape changed structurally in March 2024 when the EU’s Digital Markets Act came into force, requiring Apple to permit alternative app marketplaces in the European Economic Area (EEA). Apple implemented new business terms for EU developers, including a 0.50 euro Core Technology Fee per annual install above 1 million (applicable even for free apps) and a reduced commission floor of 10% for qualifying apps.
Sensor Tower estimates the EU policy shift has reshaped approximately $4 billion of annual iOS commission revenue. The legal pressure has not stopped there: as of Q2 2026, antitrust proceedings or investigations are active in the United States (DOJ, trial penciled for 2027), the EU (European Commission, Digital Markets Act compliance), the United Kingdom (CMA), India, Brazil, Colombia, and France. Apple is simultaneously appealing a U.S. federal court contempt order related to the Epic Games v. Apple case, which concerned its obligation to allow developers to link to external payment options. The Supreme Court appeal was still active as of mid-2026.
The long-term trajectory of these cases matters to developer earnings. If U.S. courts eventually require Apple to permit competing app stores or eliminate its commission on external payments, the financial structure of the App Store will change materially. The current 2026 data reflects none of those potential outcomes.
App Store Safety and Security Features
Beyond fraud prevention metrics, the App Store’s security infrastructure runs on three tiers: App Review (human reviewers and machine learning evaluating every submission), runtime protections (sandboxing, privacy manifests, App Tracking Transparency), and platform-level controls (StoreKit payment infrastructure covering 680,000+ apps, Screen Time parental controls, Ask to Buy).
The App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework, introduced in iOS 14.5 (2021), permanently restructured the in-app advertising market. AppsFlyer’s 2026 data shows approximately 25% of iOS users opt in to cross-app tracking — well below the pre-ATT default of near-universal tracking. This suppresses targeting precision for ad-supported apps while increasing the relative value of subscription-based monetization, which is part of what is driving the subscription revenue surge.
The App Store’s fraud prevention report confirms that over 680,000 apps now use Apple’s StoreKit and Apple Pay payment technologies. Those integrations are required for digital goods and services on iOS — a structural guarantee of transaction data flowing through Apple’s infrastructure, which is what enables the scale of fraud detection described above.

Axis Intelligence Research proprietary calculations
Two figures in this article are Axis Intelligence Research original calculations:
1. Digital billings vs. consumer spending gap ($31.4 billion)
- Formula: Apple’s 2025 digital goods billings ($149B) − Business of Apps iOS consumer spending ($117.6B) = $31.4B unexplained gap
- Interpretation: Represents enterprise/B2B licensing, developer-side tool revenue, and methodology differences between the Analysis Group’s broader definition and Business of Apps’ consumer IAP tracking
- Limitation: Both inputs use different measurement methodologies; the gap is directional, not precise
- As of: 2025 full-year data
2. iOS Revenue Per Install (RPIL™)
- Formula: iOS consumer spending ($117.6B, Business of Apps FY2025) ÷ iOS unique first-time downloads (~40B, Sensor Tower FY2025) = $2.94
- Google Play RPIL™: $49.2B ÷ 113B = $0.44
- iOS/Android RPIL™ ratio: 6.7x
- Limitation: Sensor Tower’s iOS download figure is an estimate using panel-based methodology. Business of Apps’ spending figure is itself derived from Sensor Tower. The ratio is more reliable than either absolute figure. Treat as indicative of relative monetization efficiency.
- As of: 2025 full-year data
Limitations
- App Store app counts vary by source and measurement methodology. 42matters (2.46M as of July 12, 2026) and Business of Apps (2.42M as 2025 year-end) differ because of different crawl methodologies and timing. Apple does not publish an official count.
- “Ecosystem billings and sales” ($1.4T) and “consumer spending on iOS” ($117.6B) measure different things. The larger figure includes physical goods commerce that flows through iOS apps; the smaller figure tracks direct consumer payments for digital goods. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions.
- The $2.94 iOS RPIL™ is an Axis Intelligence Research cross-source calculation. It should not be used as a per-transaction revenue estimate.
- EU and U.S. regulatory changes occurring after July 2026 could alter developer economics materially. This page will be updated when Apple publishes its next ecosystem study.
