Axis Intelligence Research does not publish a “lifetime sales” total. IDC has not released public figures for the first three quarters of 2025, and filling that hole with a guess would put a number into circulation that nobody measured. What can be said with sourcing: at least 435,000 units are accounted for across 2024 and Q4 2025 (390,000 + 45,000), and the true cumulative figure sits above that floor.
How does Q4 2025 compare with the launch year?
Spread evenly, 390,000 units in 2024 works out to 97,500 units per quarter. IDC’s 45,000-unit Q4 2025 figure is 46.2% of that average — and it landed in a holiday quarter, on a refreshed M5 model, which is normally when Apple hardware peaks.
Alex Rivera’s read: A refresh quarter is supposed to be the easy comp. The M5 model arrived in stores on October 22, 2025, right before the gifting season, and sell-through still came in under half the launch year’s average pace. That tells you the constraint wasn’t the chip. Buyers who wanted the first Vision Pro already had it; everyone else was waiting on price and weight, and the M5 changed neither.

Axis cross-check. Both figures come from the same IDC tracker, so they can be combined: 390,000 Apple units ÷ 5.2% implies an AR/VR headset market of roughly 7.5 million units in 2024. Axis Intelligence Research labels this an estimate, since IDC rounds share to one decimal and the 390,000 figure is itself rounded.
By Q2 2026, Apple no longer appeared in IDC’s top five for the combined XR headset-and-glasses market. IDC’s September 16, 2026 update put Meta at 68.7% share, followed by RayNeo, Alibaba, XREAL and Xiaomi.
Is the VR Headset Market Shrinking?
Headsets are shrinking as a share of XR, fast. IDC’s December 2025 release forecast total XR shipments of 14.5 million units in 2025, while mixed- and virtual-reality headset shipments were expected to fall 42.8% that year. By Q2 2026, IDC counted headsets at just 15.4% of XR shipments, against 70.3% for display-less audio glasses and 14.3% for display glasses. IDC forecasts total XR unit growth of 26.3% for 2026 — driven by glasses, not headsets.

Apple reports Vision Pro inside its Wearables, Home and Accessories category — the fiscal 2025 Form 10-K lists it there alongside Apple Watch, AirPods and HomePod. Axis Intelligence Research finding: VPRW™ fell 63.1% between calendar 2024 and the December 2025 quarter. On the implied-revenue side, the full 2024 launch year generated 8.67 times the headset revenue of Q4 2025 ($1,364.61M ÷ $157.455M).
Scope. VPRW™ uses the U.S. list price as the per-unit value. Prices outside the U.S. are higher in local currency, while enterprise discounts and higher-storage configurations pull in different directions, so the metric reads as an order-of-magnitude weight, not an accounting figure. It inherits every property of IDC’s shipment estimates, which count units shipped into the channel, not units sold to end users.
Alex Rivera’s read: At 1.37%, Vision Pro is a rounding error inside a segment that itself slipped 2.2% year over year in the December 2025 quarter ($11,493M vs. $11,747M). That is why Apple could cut Vision Pro digital advertising by more than 95% in the U.S. and U.K. — a Sensor Tower figure reported by the FT — without it registering anywhere in its earnings.
Who Is Actually Buying Apple Vision Pro?
Enterprise is the most documented buyer base. Apple’s October 2025 release names CAE (pilot training), Porsche (showroom vehicle configuration) and Visage Imaging with UC San Diego Health (3D medical imaging) as deployments. On Apple’s May 2024 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said more than half of Fortune 100 companies had bought Vision Pro units — a statement that confirms reach across large companies but not volume, since one evaluation unit counts.
What the public record does not contain is any consumer-versus-enterprise split of Vision Pro shipments. Axis Intelligence Research will not estimate one without a sourced input.
Will There Be an Apple Vision Pro 2?
Not soon, according to the latest reporting. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote in his September 27, 2026 Power On newsletter that Apple is weighing four concepts for a redesigned headset under the codename N224, with arrival unlikely before late 2028 or early 2029 and the project described internally as being on “life support.” Apple has not confirmed any successor.
