Quick Answer:

BYD sold 4,602,436 New Energy Vehicles in 2025 — 2.81 times more than Tesla’s 1,636,129 deliveries — yet earned only 1.23 times more total revenue ($116.3B vs $94.83B) and 1.25 times more net profit ($4.72B vs $3.79B). Axis Intelligence Research calculates BYD’s revenue per vehicle at $25,280 versus Tesla’s $57,960 — a $32,680 per-vehicle gap that defines the structural difference between the world’s two largest EV companies. BYD simultaneously topped global energy storage shipments for the first time at 60+ GWh, displacing Tesla. The 2025 annual report, released March 27, 2026, is the first full picture of a company that now earns more aggregate revenue and profit than Tesla while extracting dramatically less per unit — and spending nearly twice its annual profit on R&D.

Key Findings

  • BYD’s full-year 2025 revenue reached CNY 803.97 billion (~$116.3B USD), crossing the CNY 800 billion threshold for the first time, according to the BYD 2025 Annual Report (002594.SZ, released March 27, 2026). Revenue grew only 3.46% — the slowest growth rate in six years — as a brutal domestic price war compressed margins.
  • BYD’s net profit fell 18.97% to CNY 32.62 billion (~$4.72B USD), the first annual profit decline in four years, while the company simultaneously increased R&D spending 17% to CNY 63.4 billion (~$9.18B) — nearly double its annual net profit, which is not how a company that’s finished investing behaves.
  • The Axis BYD-Tesla Volume-Value Divergence Index (VVDI) scores 0.436 for 2025, meaning BYD captures only 44% of the revenue, per unit of market share, that Tesla captures. BYD sold 2.81× more vehicles but earned only 1.23× more revenue — a structural gap this analysis quantifies for the first time.
  • BYD’s overseas exports exceeded 1 million units for the first time in 2025, reaching 1.05 million — a 145% year-on-year increase. Overseas operations now account for 38.65% of revenue (up from 28.55% in 2024) and carry a 19.5% gross margin versus the 16.7% domestic margin, making international expansion BYD’s primary profitability lever going into 2026.
  • BYD topped global Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) shipments in 2025 at 60+ GWh, displacing Tesla (46.7 GWh) and claiming a 13% market share versus Tesla’s 10%, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence 2025 data. This is the first year BYD has held the #1 BESS position.

The Axis BYD-Tesla Volume-Value Divergence Index (VVDI)

This is the metric neither company publishes and no single analyst has computed across both sets of published annual data. Axis Intelligence Research built it by dividing BYD’s revenue ratio (vs Tesla) by BYD’s volume ratio (vs Tesla) — producing a score that measures how much revenue BYD captures per unit of market share advantage.

Formula: VVDI = (BYD Revenue ÷ Tesla Revenue) ÷ (BYD Units Sold ÷ Tesla Units Sold)

A VVDI of 1.0 would mean BYD captures proportional revenue for every additional vehicle sold. A score of 0.436 means BYD captures 44 cents of revenue value for every dollar of market share it holds over Tesla. The $32,680 per-vehicle revenue gap — Tesla earns $57,960 per vehicle versus BYD’s $25,280 — is the structural number underlying that score.

What drives the gap?

Three things, each worth unpacking:

  1. Average Selling Price (ASP) difference. BYD’s domestic ASP was approximately CNY 141,000 (~$20,400) per vehicle in 2025, derived from automotive segment revenue (CNY 648.65B) ÷ total NEV sales (4,602,436). The overseas ASP ran CNY 186,000 (~$26,928) — closer to Tesla territory but still well below. Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y dominate its mix at $40,000–$55,000 in most markets. BYD’s volume-leader models (the Seagull, Dolphin, and Qin series) start below $15,000 in China. The product mix is simply different.
  2. Currency conversion. BYD reports in CNY; the $116.3B USD figure assumes an implied FX rate of ~6.91 (which is what BYD’s own stated conversions in the annual report imply). CNY/USD fluctuation of ±5% shifts BYD’s revenue by ~$5.8B. The VVDI direction holds under any reasonable FX assumption, but the absolute gap figure is FX-sensitive.
  3. Non-auto revenue inclusion. BYD’s total revenue includes CNY 155.24B from mobile handset components and assembly services — a legacy contract manufacturing business that has nothing to do with vehicles. If you compare automotive segments only (BYD: $93.87B vs Tesla automotive: ~$81B), the gap narrows. Either way, BYD automotive segment revenue exceeds Tesla’s automotive revenue — a first for 2025.

Methodology: inputs are BYD’s 2025 Annual Report (released March 27, 2026, filed on Shenzhen Stock Exchange 002594.SZ and HKEX 01211.HK) and Tesla’s FY2025 10-K (filed January 28, 2026, with the SEC). Both companies report on December 31 fiscal years. FX conversion: CNY/USD 6.91 implied from BYD’s own stated USD equivalents in the annual report. How Many Vehicles Did BYD Sell in 2025?

4,602,436 New Energy Vehicles. That’s the verified figure from BYD’s monthly sales releases, confirmed in the 2025 Annual Report. The split between the two powertrain types is now nearly equal: 2,256,714 BEVs (49.6% of total, up 27.86% year-on-year) and 2,288,709 PHEVs (50.4% of total, down 7.91% year-on-year).

The BEV growth and PHEV decline in the same year is the most structurally interesting datapoint in BYD’s 2025 sales figures. BYD built its volume leadership on plug-in hybrids — the DM-i Super Hybrid technology that offered competitive range and fuel economy at a price Chinese buyers would actually pay. That product is now losing share within BYD’s own mix, which is what a completed PHEV market looks like from the inside. Buyers who came in via the hybrid are transitioning to pure electric. At 50:50, BYD is watching its own thesis about the PHEV as a bridge technology play out.

BYD vs Tesla 2025: Volume and Revenue Compared

Tesla delivered 1,636,129 vehicles in FY2025, down 8.6% from 2024 — the second consecutive annual decline and the worst performance since Tesla’s modern high-volume era began, according to Tesla’s FY2025 10-K filing. BYD sold 2.81× more vehicles. This is the first year BYD has led Tesla in pure-BEV sales volume, with 2,256,714 BEVs versus Tesla’s 1,636,129 deliveries.

The global market context: BYD’s 4.6 million NEV sales represent approximately 18% of the roughly 23–25 million global EV sales recorded in 2025, making BYD the single largest EV manufacturer on earth by any reasonable measure. Its domestic presence (approximately 76% of total sales coming from China) means that share is even more concentrated than the global number suggests — which is why the overseas growth story matters so much.

BYD Revenue and Financial Statistics 2025

Revenue by Business Segment

The BYD that shipped 4.6 million vehicles last year is not purely an automaker. The 2025 Annual Report (002594.SZ) breaks revenue into two reported segments:

  • Automobiles and related products: CNY 648.65 billion (~$93.87B), 80.68% of total, +5.06% YoY. Gross margin: 20.5%, down 1.8 percentage points from the prior year.
  • Mobile handset components, assembly service and other products: CNY 155.24 billion (~$22.46B), 19.32% of total, -2.74% YoY.

The handset component business is a legacy of BYD’s origins as a battery manufacturer that diversified into contract electronics. It makes housings and electronic components, primarily for major smartphone OEMs. This revenue stream is declining slowly, and the annual report gives it minimal strategic emphasis — management’s commentary is almost entirely focused on the automotive and energy storage businesses.

The notable omission from BYD’s segment reporting: energy storage is not broken out as a standalone revenue segment. It is embedded within the automobiles and related products segment along with batteries, photovoltaics, and rail transport. This matters for anyone trying to value BYD as an energy company versus an automaker. The breakdown isn’t there, and BYD has been consistently asked by analysts to provide it.

Gross Margin and Net Profit Statistics

BYD’s overall gross margin fell to 17.74% in 2025, from 19.44% in 2024 — a 1.7 percentage point compression driven directly by the domestic price war. Wang Chuanfu, BYD’s chairman and CEO, described the Chinese auto market at the company’s December 2025 extraordinary shareholders’ meeting as going through a “knockout stage.” That’s not marketing language. BYD averaged CNY 141,000 (~$20,400) per vehicle domestically in 2025, down 2.42% from 2024.

What should matter more to anyone watching BYD’s profitability trajectory is the overseas margin divergence. The second half of 2025 overseas average selling price was CNY 186,000 (~$26,928) — approximately 1.5 times the domestic ASP. Overseas gross margin reached 19.5% versus 16.7% for domestic business, per analyst reporting of BYD’s Q4 2025 segment data. Net profit per overseas vehicle was estimated at CNY 20,000+ (~$2,895) by Dolphin Research analysts covering BYD’s results. If BYD hits its 2026 overseas target of 1.3 million units, international operations alone could generate CNY 30–32 billion (~$4.3–4.6B) in net profit — approaching the company’s entire 2025 net profit from overseas sales alone.

The domestic tax line deserves a mention: BYD paid CNY 53.3 billion (~$7.7B) in domestic taxes in 2025, exceeding its own net profit of CNY 32.62 billion. That’s not an accounting error. It reflects how corporate tax structures, VAT, and local government levies stack up for a company of BYD’s scale operating primarily in China. The net profit figure people cite as BYD’s “earnings” is what’s left after the government took more than the shareholders did.

Why BYD Spends Twice Its Profit on R&D

BYD’s CNY 63.4 billion (~$9.18B) in 2025 R&D spending is 1.94 times its annual net profit. Cumulative R&D investment across BYD’s history has now exceeded CNY 240 billion (~$34.7B). The company employs 120,000 R&D engineers — roughly 18% of its 650,000+ total workforce.

I drive a battery-electric Ioniq 6 daily in Montreal. I think about charging cycles, cold-weather range, and long-run cost of ownership, not quarterly margins. What BYD is doing with that R&D budget is not abstract. In March 2026, they launched a second-generation Blade Battery and a flash-charging platform that — in independent testing — charges from 10% to 70% in five minutes at room temperature, and from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes at -30°C. That last number is the one that matters in Canada. Most EV charging claims don’t survive a Montreal January. A battery that charges from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes in -30°C weather solves a real problem. It’s not a press release number — Yiche.com’s independent testing confirmed BYD’s new models met those specifications in real-world conditions.

BYD’s 2026 flash-charging network target of 20,000 stations is aggressive. As of March 25, 2026, 4,990 were already online. By comparison, the United States had 4,195 total NACS fast-charging stations (including Tesla Superchargers) at the same date. BYD is building a dedicated network for its own technology — the charging equivalent of Tesla’s Supercharger moat, built in one market in one year.

BYD International Sales and Overseas Statistics 2025

BYD’s 1.05 million overseas exports in 2025 are the figure the company highlighted most prominently in its annual results communications — and with good reason. Overseas sales represent the only part of BYD’s business where margins improved in 2025. Five consecutive months of year-on-year domestic sales declines (July through November) made the international performance structurally critical.

The 2025 overseas achievement in figures:

  • 1.05 million units exported, first time exceeding 1 million, up 145% year-on-year
  • Overseas revenue: CNY 310.74 billion (~$45.0B), up 40.1% year-on-year
  • Overseas share of total revenue: 38.65%, up from 28.55% in 2024
  • Overseas ASP: CNY ~186,000 (~$26,928) in H2 2025 — 1.5× domestic ASP
  • Overseas gross margin: 19.5% versus domestic 16.7%

In Europe specifically, BYD registrations surged. In February 2026, BYD’s new car registrations in Europe reached 17,954 — narrowly exceeding Tesla’s 17,664 registrations in the same month, according to analyst data reported by CnEVPost. In the UK specifically, BYD sold 35,604 cars in the first nine months of 2025, up 576.9% year-on-year. These numbers are still small in absolute terms relative to BYD’s China base, but the trajectory is unmistakable.

BYD’s local manufacturing footprint is key to sustaining European momentum in a tariff environment. The Hungary plant has an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles and enables locally assembled vehicles to avoid the EU’s additional tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. The Brazil facility covers both BEV and PHEV production. Thailand’s Rayong plant now runs independently, with local staff handling complete vehicle manufacturing. The Brazil, Thailand, and Hungary plants represent BYD’s “industrial chain export” strategy — shipping manufacturing capability, not just products.

BYD entered 119 countries and regions globally as of year-end 2025, targeting 1.3 million overseas units in 2026 (a 24% increase from 2025). This is their minimum scenario. Some internal projections cited in analyst coverage run as high as 1.5–1.6 million. The difference between those scenarios turns primarily on EU tariff enforcement and Brazil’s ongoing EV incentive structure.

BYD Energy Storage Statistics 2025

BYD’s energy storage business shipped over 60 GWh globally in 2025, ranking first among all global Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) integrators for the first time — displacing Tesla, which shipped 46.7 GWh (a 49% year-on-year increase that was nonetheless insufficient to hold the top position), according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence’s 2025 BESS market data, as reported by Electrek in May 2026.

The market share breakdown:

The global BESS market itself grew 51% in 2025 to approximately 315+ GWh, per Benchmark and InfoLink data. China installed 65 GWh of large-scale battery storage in December 2025 alone — more than the United States deployed across the entire full year.

BYD’s structural advantage in energy storage is vertical integration. The company manufactures its own LFP Blade battery cells, which supply both its EV business and its BESS operations. Tesla, by contrast, sources Megapack cells from CATL, BYD, and LG — meaning Tesla competes in energy storage while buying batteries from two of its top BESS competitors. That’s not a temporary problem.

The flagship product making BYD’s BESS market share defensible is the HaoHan energy storage system, launched September 2025: standard capacity of 14.5 MWh per unit, using a 2,710 Ah dedicated Blade Battery cell. Compared to Tesla’s Megapack at approximately 3.9 MWh standard capacity, BYD’s system offers roughly 3.7× the capacity per unit. That’s not a minor specification difference — it changes the economics of grid-scale project build-out, particularly on large utility contracts. BYD secured a 12.5 GWh grid-side energy storage contract with Saudi Electricity Company in 2025, described by the company as the world’s largest single grid-side energy storage project at the time of signing. That contract alone is roughly 21% of Tesla’s full-year BESS volume.

BYD Technology Statistics: Blade Battery, Flash Charging, and ADAS

Blade Battery Generation 2 (Launched March 2026)

BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, launched March 5, 2026, set new benchmarks for fast charging in mass-production vehicles:

  • 10% to 70% charge in 5 minutes (room temperature, standard conditions)
  • 10% to 97% charge in 9 minutes (room temperature)
  • 20% to 97% charge in 12 minutes at -30°C (cold weather performance)
  • 20% to 97% charge in 10 minutes at -20°C

Independent testing by Yiche.com confirmed real-world models met BYD’s stated charging specifications, with some competitors’ equivalent-spec claims failing to replicate in the same testing methodology. The -30°C figure is the one that distinguishes this technology from predecessors — nearly every previous ultra-fast charging system suffers dramatic performance degradation below -10°C.

BYD Flash Charging Network (2026 Rollout)

BYD’s flash charging network is built to support the Gen 2 Blade Battery’s charging specifications:

  • Target by end of 2026: 20,000 flash charging stations in China, each with multiple stalls
  • Online as of March 25, 2026: 4,990 stations
  • Comparison: 4,195 total NACS fast-charging stations in the US (including Tesla Superchargers), as of the same date

BYD Market Capitalization and Stock Statistics

BYD is listed on two exchanges:

  • H-shares (HK: 1211): trading at HKD 72.20 on June 30, 2026 (52-week range: HKD 72.10–136.30)
  • A-shares (SZ: 002594): trading at CNY 78.68 on June 30, 2026 (52-week range: CNY 77.60–116.59)
  • Combined market cap: approximately $107 billion USD as of June 30, 2026

The 52-week high-to-low range (HKD 136.30 peak vs HKD 72.10 floor) represents a nearly 50% drawdown from peak — reflecting the market’s reaction to the profit decline, domestic price war pressure, and broader China-A-share volatility in the first half of 2026.

Berkshire Hathaway exit: Berkshire Hathaway Energy confirmed a zero position in BYD in its Q1 2025 SEC filing (reported May 2025), ending a 17-year investment that began when Warren Buffett purchased 225 million H-shares at HK$8 per share in September 2008 for approximately $230 million. Berkshire’s stake grew to a peak value of approximately $7.7 billion before Berkshire began selling in August 2022. The complete divestiture generated an estimated return of 20-30 times the original investment. BYD’s PR team publicly thanked Berkshire for 17 years of partnership.

In March 2025 — the same quarter Berkshire completed its exit — BYD completed a $5.6 billion H-share lightning placement, setting a record for the largest-ever lightning placement in the global automotive industry. The proceed funded global expansion: plant construction in Hungary, Brazil, Thailand, and R&D center development in Europe.

BYD vs. Global Automaker Rankings 2025

BYD’s entry into the top 5 global automakers by sales volume is confirmed by the 2025 full-year sales figures. This is a historic first for a Chinese automaker. BYD also ranked 91st on the 2025 Fortune Global 500 list — its first entry into the top 100, advancing from 143rd in 2024. In December 2025, BYD produced its 15 millionth New Energy Vehicle, making it the first Chinese automaker to reach this manufacturing milestone. The jump from 10 million to 15 million NEVs took just 13 months.

What is BYD’s energy storage market share?

BYD ranked #1 globally in Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) shipments in 2025 with 60+ GWh shipped, representing a 13% global market share, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence data published in 2026. Tesla ranked #2 with 46.7 GWh (10% share). This is the first year BYD has held the #1 position in global energy storage, overtaking Tesla.

Does Warren Buffett still own BYD shares?

No. Berkshire Hathaway fully exited its BYD position by March 2025, confirmed in Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s Q1 2025 SEC filing (reported in May 2025). Berkshire’s original $230 million investment (September 2008, 225 million H-shares at HK$8) had grown to a peak value of approximately $7.7 billion before Berkshire began selling in August 2022. The complete divestiture is estimated to have generated returns of 20–30 times the original investment.

What is BYD’s Blade Battery Generation 2?

BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, launched March 5, 2026, enables charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes under standard conditions. At -30°C, the system charges from 20% to 97% in 12 minutes — the cold-weather specification that distinguishes it from comparable systems, and one that independent testing by Yiche.com confirmed in real-world testing conditions.

What are BYD’s 2026 targets?

BYD has publicly targeted 1.3 million overseas vehicle sales in 2026 (up 24% from 2025’s 1.05 million), 20,000 flash charging stations in China by year-end, and continued rollout of its second-generation Blade Battery across its full vehicle lineup. No official total NEV sales target for 2026 has been stated in the same terms as the 2025 guidance.

Methodology

Axis Intelligence Research compiled this analysis between June 25 and June 30, 2026, drawing on the BYD 2025 Annual Report (released March 27, 2026, on Shenzhen Stock Exchange 002594.SZ and Hong Kong Stock Exchange 01211.HK), Tesla’s FY2025 10-K (filed January 28, 2026, with the SEC), Benchmark Mineral Intelligence BESS market data (via Electrek reporting, May 2026), and analyst reporting from CnEVPost, 36kr/Dolphin Research, BigGo Finance, and Gasgoo cross-referencing the annual report.

The Axis BYD-Tesla Volume-Value Divergence Index (VVDI): Original Axis Intelligence Research calculation. VVDI = (BYD Total Revenue ÷ Tesla Total Revenue) ÷ (BYD Total Vehicle Sales ÷ Tesla Total Deliveries). For 2025: (116.35 ÷ 94.83) ÷ (4,602,436 ÷ 1,636,129) = 1.227 ÷ 2.814 = 0.436. Inputs are the companies’ respective 2025 full-year annual reports. CNY/USD conversion at 6.91 (implied from BYD’s stated USD equivalents in the annual report). This metric is an Axis Intelligence Research original not published by any other source.

Revenue per vehicle: BYD total revenue ($116.35B) ÷ total NEV sales (4,602,436) = $25,278 per vehicle, rounded to $25,280. Tesla total revenue ($94.83B) ÷ total deliveries (1,636,129) = $57,960 per vehicle. These calculations use total company revenue (including non-automotive segments) for both companies. Automotive-only revenue calculations would produce slightly different ratios but would not change the direction or qualitative conclusion.

Overseas gross margin and ASP (16.7%, 19.5%, CNY 186,000): These figures appear in analyst decomposition of BYD’s Q4 2025 segment data by Dolphin Research (36kr), which cross-referenced the annual report segment disclosures. They are analyst estimates from the primary filing, not numbers BYD states directly in the annual report. They are cited as such.

Energy storage rankings: Benchmark Mineral Intelligence 2025 BESS data, as reported by Electrek (May 13, 2026) and EnergyTrend (May 19, 2026). BYD’s 60+ GWh figure is confirmed independently in the BYD 2025 Annual Report. Benchmark Mineral Intelligence and InfoLink are market research firms, cited in plain text per Axis editorial policy.

Limitations: BYD’s CNY-denominated financials are subject to FX variation. BYD does not separately disclose energy storage segment revenue. Q4 2025 domestic/overseas margin split and average selling price figures are analyst estimates from primary annual report inputs, not separately audited items. BYD’s annual report does not provide a per-vehicle ASP directly; it is derived. Tesla’s 2025 per-vehicle figures use total revenue, not automotive-only, for consistency with BYD’s calculation.

About This Dataset

Update cadence: Relevance-driven. This article will be revised when BYD releases its Q1/H1 2026 interim results (August 2026), when 2025 fiscal-year energy storage rankings are updated by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, or when BYD’s overseas expansion produces a material change in segment margin data.
