*CPCA = Axis Intelligence Research Cost per 100 Cold-Cranking Amps (shelf price ÷ CCA × 100). Prices exclude tax, state fees and core deposits.
Look past the brand names and the pricing logic is blunt. Walmart prices nearly its whole EverStart Maxx line at one of two points, $149.84 or $159.84, whether the battery delivers 370 cold-cranking amps or 850. AutoZone prices by tier — TotalPro, Duralast, Gold, Platinum, Elite — and the tier, not the size, does most of the work on the sticker. For a shopper, that means the retailer’s price ladder matters more than the battery’s physics.
How Much Is a Car Battery by Type: Flooded vs AGM?
| Battery type | Listings | Median price | Low | High | Median CPCA | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flooded (standard lead-acid) | 34 | $159.84 | $119.99 | $219.99 | $25.33 | Axis Intelligence Research, AutoZone + Walmart, 2026-10-01 |
| AGM (absorbed glass mat) | 12 | $224.50 | $189.00 | $289.99 | $31.87 | Axis Intelligence Research, AutoZone + Walmart, 2026-10-01 |
| All batteries | 46 | $184.99 | $119.99 | $289.99 | $25.62 | Axis Intelligence Research |
An AGM car battery costs 40.4% more than a flooded battery at the median, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s October 2026 audit. That premium is not optional for many newer cars. Walmart’s own installation guidance notes that vehicles with start-stop features or added electronics may need AGM, and Consumer Reports reports that some recent Audi, BMW, Ford and Mercedes-Benz models require the new battery to be registered with the car using a scan tool.
The interesting wrinkle sits inside the AGM column. At Walmart, every EverStart Platinum AGM listing we logged was $189.00 — cheaper than any Duralast Gold flooded battery at AutoZone. The AGM premium is real across the market, but at the discount chain it has almost disappeared.
AGM vs Flooded by Retailer

Small batteries are the quiet bad deal. Group 51R and 151R units — common in compact Hondas and Toyotas — deliver the fewest amps but sit at the same price as big batteries, so they land at the top of the CPCA ranking ($40.50 to $44.00 per 100 CCA). Small-car owners don’t overpay because of a markup; they overpay because retail price ladders ignore battery size.
The Axis CPCA: What a Car Battery Costs per Unit of Starting Power
CPCA — Cost per 100 Cold-Cranking Amps — is an Axis Intelligence Research metric that normalizes battery prices by the one rating that decides whether your car starts on a cold morning.
Formula: CPCA = shelf price ÷ CCA × 100
Worked example: EverStart Maxx 65 at $149.84 with 850 CCA → 149.84 ÷ 850 × 100 = $17.63 per 100 CCA, the best value in the dataset. Duralast Gold 51R-DLG at $219.99 with 500 CCA → $44.00, the most expensive.
| Rank | Best CPCA | CPCA | Worst CPCA | CPCA | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | EverStart Maxx 65 | $17.63 | Duralast Gold 51R-DLG | $44.00 | |
| 2 | EverStart Maxx 27 | $18.50 | Duralast 51R-DL | $42.35 | |
| 3 | EverStart Maxx 78 / 34 | $18.73 | EverStart Maxx 151R | $40.50 |
CPCA is a price-per-performance yardstick, not a buying instruction. You still buy the group size your car requires and at least the CCA in your owner’s manual; CPCA tells you which of the batteries that fit gives you the most cranking power per dollar. It does not capture reserve capacity, warranty length or lab-tested lifespan.
Car Battery Replacement Cost by State: The Axis BLCI
No retailer quotes an out-the-door price, because the last three lines of the receipt depend on where you live: sales tax, a nonrefundable state battery fee in six states, and a core deposit that some states require by law.
BLCI — Battery Landed Cost Index — is an Axis Intelligence Research index of what the same reference battery costs at the counter in each state, with the national median set to 100.
Formula: Landed cost = $184.99 × (1 + combined state and average local sales tax rate) + state nonrefundable battery fee. BLCI = state landed cost ÷ national median landed cost ($197.94) × 100.
Inputs: the $184.99 reference price is the median of our 46 verified listings; tax rates are the Tax Foundation’s midyear 2026 combined rates as of July 1, 2026; fees and deposit rules come from Battery Council International’s state recycling law summary. This is the baseline reading of the BLCI.

Sources: Tax Foundation (rates as of July 1, 2026); Battery Council International (state laws page modified July 9, 2026); Axis Intelligence Research BLCI calculation. All 50 states and DC are in the CSV.
A Louisiana driver pays $18.74 more than an Oregon driver for the identical $184.99 battery, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s BLCI. Texas is the case worth noting: its sales tax alone would rank it mid-pack, but the $3 state fee on 12-volt batteries pushes it into the top three. California’s $2 fee does the same job alongside a 9.03% combined rate.
State Battery Fees and Core Deposit Laws
| State | Nonrefundable state fee | Refundable core deposit rule |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | $3 (12 V and up) | Allowed, retailer sets amount |
| California | $2 | Required, retailer sets amount; 45-day refund period |
| South Carolina | $2 | Required, $5 |
| Florida | $1.50 | Allowed |
| Maine | $1 | Required, $10 |
| Missouri | $0.50 | Allowed |
| Arkansas, Idaho, Minnesota, Wisconsin | — | Required, $10 |
| Connecticut, New York | — | Required, $5 |
| Washington | — | Required, $5 minimum |
| Colorado | — | Allowed, $10 minimum |

The core deposit is the line people misread on a receipt. It is refundable, and BCI notes that retailers in all 50 states can charge one and over 30 states require it by law. AutoZone currently charges $22 per car battery — well above the $5 or $10 statutory figures — which is legal because most statutes set a floor or leave the amount to the retailer. Bring the old battery with you and the $22 never leaves your account.
Car Battery Replacement Cost at a Shop vs DIY vs Retail Install
| Route | What you pay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| DIY, battery only | $119.99–$289.99 (median $184.99) | Axis Intelligence Research, 2026-10-01 |
| Retail chain with free install | Shelf price; Walmart offers free installation with Walmart battery purchases at participating Auto Care Centers, subject to vehicle eligibility | Walmart, 2026-10-01 |
| Independent or chain repair shop | $456–$493 total; labor $61–$90; parts $394–$403 | RepairPal estimator, updated 2026-09-03 |
Here our data and RepairPal’s estimator disagree, and the disagreement is the useful part. RepairPal prices the part at $394–$403. The single most expensive battery in our retail audit — a Duralast Platinum Elite AGM — is $289.99, and the AGM median is $224.50. So roughly $105 to $180 of a typical shop bill is battery markup over the top of the retail shelf, before a minute of labor. RepairPal’s figure reflects shop parts pricing and mixed vehicle fleets (its model links show a Ford F-150 at $362–$389 and a Toyota Camry at $1,045–$1,064, the latter consistent with vehicles that need more involved access or a specialized battery), so it isn’t wrong. It describes a different purchase.
The practical math: on a car with an under-hood battery, buying at a retail chain that installs for free saves about $271 to $308 against the RepairPal installed range at the median shelf price ($456 − $184.99 to $493 − $184.99), according to Axis Intelligence Research.
When the shop is worth it: cars that require battery registration with a scan tool (Consumer Reports names recent Audi, BMW, Ford and Mercedes-Benz models), batteries under seats or in wheel wells, and any car where Walmart’s eligibility check fails.
How Long Does a Car Battery Last — and What It Costs per Year
AAA puts typical car battery life at three to five years, ranging from 58 months or longer in the most northern US regions to less than 41 months in the most southern, as reported by Consumer Reports (updated June 6, 2026). Heat, not cold, does most of the damage; Consumer Reports adds that AAA answers nearly 2 million battery-related service calls each summer.
Amortize the same battery over those lifespans and the geography of cost flips:
| Battery | Price | Annual cost, North (58 mo) | Annual cost, South (41 mo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Median flooded | $159.84 | $33.07 | $46.78 |
| Median AGM | $224.50 | $46.45 | $65.71 |
Formula: annual cost = price ÷ (lifespan in months ÷ 12). Source: Axis Intelligence Research estimate using AAA lifespans via Consumer Reports and October 2026 median prices.
Axis Intelligence Research estimates a Southern US driver pays about 41.5% more per year for the same battery than a driver in the far North, because the battery dies roughly 17 months sooner. Because AAA gives the bounds as “58 or longer” and “less than 41,” the real gap is at least that wide. That is a far bigger regional effect than sales tax: the BLCI spread between the most and least expensive states is under 10 index points.
What Moves the Price of a Car Battery Replacement
Chemistry. AGM costs 40.4% more than flooded at the median. If your car shipped with AGM, keep AGM.
Retailer tier ladder. At AutoZone, moving from Duralast to Duralast Gold in the same Group 24F adds $30.00 ($184.99 to $214.99); from Gold to Platinum AGM in Group 48 adds $45.00.
Group size. Small 51R/151R batteries cost the same as large ones but deliver fewer amps, so they score worst on CPCA.
Labor and access. RepairPal’s labor range is $61–$90; under-seat, trunk or wheel-well batteries and battery registration push the job toward a shop.
The receipt tail. Sales tax up to 10.13% (Louisiana), state fees up to $3 (Texas), and a refundable core deposit ($22 at AutoZone).
Climate. Southern heat shortens life and raises the per-year cost by about 41.5%.
How to Pay Less for a Car Battery Replacement
- Find your group size first (owner’s manual, the old battery’s label, or the retailer’s vehicle lookup). Shopping by group size is the only fair comparison.
- Match or exceed the factory CCA and chemistry, then pick the lowest CPCA among batteries that fit. In our data that is usually a Walmart EverStart unit.
- Check free-install eligibility before you buy; it erases $61–$90 of labor.
- Bring the old battery to skip the core deposit.
- Pay for the shop only when your car needs registration or hard access — that is where the $456–$493 installed price earns its keep.
- In hot states, test the battery yearly from year two; Consumer Reports recommends annual load testing after a battery is 2 years old.
Car Battery Replacement Cost: Questions Drivers Ask
Why does my car battery receipt show a $22 charge I didn’t expect?
That is a refundable core deposit. AutoZone charges $22 per car battery as of October 1, 2026, and returns it when you hand in the old battery. Over 30 states require some deposit by law, per Battery Council International.
Is a $150 battery worse than a $290 battery of the same size?
Not necessarily on starting power. In Group 48, a $189.00 EverStart Platinum AGM and a $289.99 Duralast Platinum Elite AGM carry the same 760 CCA rating. Price differences mostly reflect retailer tier and warranty, not cranking amps.
How much does an AGM battery replacement cost compared to a regular one?
The median AGM battery costs $224.50 vs $159.84 for flooded — a 40.4% premium, per Axis Intelligence Research’s October 2026 audit. Walmart’s AGM line was $189.00 across all six sizes we logged.
Why is the shop quote double the price of the battery online?
RepairPal’s national estimate of $456–$493 includes $61–$90 labor and $394–$403 for the part. The top retail price in our audit was $289.99, so most of the gap is parts markup, not labor.
Which state charges a fee on every car battery sold?
Six do, per Battery Council International: Texas ($3 for 12-volt and up), California ($2), South Carolina ($2), Florida ($1.50), Maine ($1) and Missouri ($0.50). Unlike a core deposit, these fees are not refunded.
Does living in a hot state really make batteries more expensive?
Yes, per year of use. AAA data reported by Consumer Reports shows lifespans under 41 months in the South vs 58+ in the North; Axis Intelligence Research estimates that makes the same battery about 41.5% more expensive per year in the South.
Can I replace the battery myself on a newer car?
On many cars, yes. But Consumer Reports notes some recent Audi, BMW, Ford and Mercedes-Benz models require the new battery to be registered with a scan tool so the car charges it correctly. Check your owner’s manual first.
Methodology
What we collected. On October 1, 2026, Axis Intelligence Research recorded the online shelf price, BCI group size, battery technology and cold-cranking amp rating of 46 car batteries: 22 from AutoZone’s car battery listing (store context: Columbus, Ohio) and 24 from Walmart’s EverStart Maxx and EverStart Platinum AGM listings. Lawn-and-garden, marine and out-of-stock items were excluded. Prices are pre-tax and exclude core deposits.
Derived figures. Medians are simple medians across listings (even counts use the midpoint of the two middle values, which is why the AGM median is $224.50). CPCA = price ÷ CCA × 100. BLCI landed cost = $184.99 × (1 + Tax Foundation combined rate) + BCI-listed nonrefundable state fee; BLCI = landed ÷ $197.94 × 100. Annual cost = price ÷ (lifespan months ÷ 12) using AAA bounds of 58 and 41 months.
Scope. Two national chains, one snapshot date, one store context for in-store pricing. Prices at other chains, regional pricing and promotions are not captured. BLCI uses average local tax rates and assumes the state fee is not itself taxed; your city’s rate can differ. This page covers 12-volt starter batteries, not EV traction packs. No batteries were physically tested by Axis Intelligence Research; lifespan figures are AAA’s.
Basis disclosure. This analysis is based on retailer listings, Tax Foundation tax data, Battery Council International statutory summaries, Consumer Reports’ reporting of AAA data, and RepairPal’s public estimator — all fetched and dated October 1, 2026.
