Named NVIDIA laptop GPUs account for 15.11% of all graphics cards on Steam in August 2026, up from 13.91% in April, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s Laptop GPU Footprint Share (LGFS), calculated from Valve’s survey. RTX 50 laptop chips now make up 27.8% of that laptop footprint, up from 20.0% four months earlier.

Quick Answer

About one in seven GPUs in the Steam install base is a gaming laptop chip: the Axis LGFS (Laptop GPU Footprint Share) reads 15.11% as of August 2026. The RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is the second most common GPU on Steam at 3.84%, and the RTX 5060 Laptop GPU gained share 2.11× faster than its desktop twin between April and August 2026. All while IDC forecasts 2026 PC shipments down 11.3% on a memory shortage.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research finds that named NVIDIA laptop GPUs held a 15.11% share of Steam Windows GPUs in August 2026 (LGFS), up 1.20 points from April.
  2. According to Valve’s August 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, the GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is Steam’s second most-used graphics card at 3.84%, behind only the desktop RTX 3060 (3.92%).
  3. Axis Intelligence Research calculates that RTX 50 laptop GPUs grew their combined Steam share 51.1% in four months, from 2.78% (April) to 4.20% (August 2026).
  4. Axis Intelligence Research finds that laptops represent 23.5% of all RTX 50 (Blackwell) GPUs visible in the August 2026 Steam survey.
  5. IDC forecasts worldwide notebook shipments of 181.3 million units in 2026, which Axis Intelligence Research calculates is 11.5% below IDC’s 2025 notebook total.

What Is the Laptop GPU Footprint Share (LGFS)?

The Laptop GPU Footprint Share (LGFS) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric that measures what percentage of the active PC gaming install base runs on a dedicated laptop GPU. It is the sum of every GPU labeled “Laptop GPU” that appears in Valve’s monthly Steam Hardware & Software Survey video card table.

Shipment trackers count boxes leaving factories. LGFS counts machines actually launching games. That difference is the whole point: a gaming laptop sold in 2022 and still playing Counter-Strike 2 today is invisible to a Q2 2026 shipment report and fully visible in LGFS.

Formula: LGFS = Σ (Steam share of each named "Laptop GPU" SKU)

Inputs (August 2026): RTX 4060 Laptop 3.84 + RTX 5060 Laptop 2.66 + RTX 3060 Laptop 1.85 + RTX 4050 Laptop 1.74 + RTX 4070 Laptop 0.96 + RTX 3050 6GB Laptop 0.70 + RTX 5070 Laptop 0.68 + RTX 3050 Ti Laptop 0.63 + RTX 5070 Ti Laptop 0.44 + RTX 3070 Laptop 0.43 + RTX 5050 Laptop 0.42 + RTX 3050 Laptop 0.36 + RTX 3070 Ti Laptop 0.22 + RTX 4080 Laptop 0.18 = 15.11%

Noah Mc: Watch July. LGFS dipped a full point, then snapped back in August. Laptops don’t vanish in thirty days, so that’s sample mix, not players dumping hardware. The survey is opt-in and its regional weighting drifts. That’s exactly why we publish the monthly series instead of a single cherry-picked reading. The trend across five months is up; the one-month wobble is noise.

What Is the Most Popular Gaming Laptop GPU in 2026?

The GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is the most common gaming laptop GPU on Steam, at 3.84% of all GPUs in August 2026. It sits second overall on the entire chart, desktop cards included, per Valve’s survey.

No AMD or Intel discrete laptop chip clears Valve’s listing threshold. Integrated graphics such as AMD’s Radeon 780M (0.29%) appear, but they ship in handhelds and thin-and-lights too, so LGFS deliberately excludes them.

Noah Mc: The RTX 5060 Laptop added nearly a full point in four months. The RTX 4060 Laptop, its predecessor, lost 0.14. That’s the generational handoff happening in real time, and the curve says the 5060 Laptop passes the 4060 Laptop somewhere in 2027 if the pace holds. For publishers targeting a spec, the practical baseline is an 8GB xx60-class laptop chip.

Are Gaming Laptops Growing Faster Than Desktops?

For NVIDIA’s RTX 50 generation, yes. Axis Intelligence Research calculates the RTX 5060 Laptop GPU gained 0.95 percentage points of Steam share between April and August 2026, against 0.45 points for the desktop RTX 5060: a 2.11× laptop-to-desktop gain ratio.

Formula: (2.66 − 1.71) ÷ (3.16 − 2.71) = 0.95 ÷ 0.45 = 2.11

Desktop RTX 50 includes the RTX 5050, 5060, 5060 Ti, 5070, 5070 Ti, 5080, and 5090. Laptop RTX 50 includes the 5050, 5060, 5070, and 5070 Ti Laptop GPUs; the 5080 and 5090 Laptop GPUs do not yet appear above Valve’s threshold.

Noah Mc: Nearly a quarter of all Blackwell cards in the wild are inside a laptop chassis. Desktop still wins on raw count, but the laptop slice is growing faster at the volume tier, the xx60. The flagship laptops aren’t even on the board yet. This is a mainstream story, not an enthusiast one.

What Do Gamers Actually Buy: Entry, Mid, or High-End Laptops?

80.7% of the laptop GPU footprint on Steam is xx50 and xx60-class hardware, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s August 2026 calculation. Upper-tier chips (xx70 and above) sum to 2.91% of all Steam GPUs, or 19.3% of LGFS.

TierAug 2026 Steam shareShare of LGFSSource
Entry / mid (xx50, xx60)12.20%80.7%Valve; Axis calculation
Upper (xx70, xx70 Ti, xx80)2.91%19.3%Valve; Axis calculation

That split barely moved all year: entry/mid ran between 80.5% and 80.9% of LGFS in every month from April to August 2026.

Noah Mc: Four out of five gaming laptops in use are the sensible middle. Marketing slides sell the RTX 5090 Laptop; the install base runs an 8GB xx60 at 1080p. If your game’s recommended spec assumes more than that, you’ve cut most of the laptop audience before launch day.

What RAM, VRAM and Screen Do PC Gamers Use in 2026?

Laptop specs are shaped by the whole Steam base they compete for. Valve’s August 2026 survey overview shows:

SpecMost common valueShareSource
System RAM16 GB41.20%Valve
System RAM32 GB37.45%Valve
System RAM8 GB7.46%Valve
VRAM16 GB26.92%Valve

Primary resolution2560×144021.86%Valve
Primary resolution2560×16005.71% (+0.61 pts m/m)Valve

The 2560×1600 line matters for laptops specifically. 16:10 QHD+ is a laptop-panel resolution, and it posted one of the largest monthly gains on the resolution chart in August 2026.

Noah Mc: 32GB is now within four points of 16GB on Steam. With memory prices up, laptop buyers will find 16GB configs are where OEMs quietly trim cost. Check the RAM line before the GPU line.

How Is the 2026 Memory Shortage Affecting Gaming Laptops?

IDC forecasts worldwide PC shipments will fall 11.3% in 2026 while average selling prices rise 18.3%, driven by a DRAM and storage shortage IDC does not expect to ease before the end of 2027, per its June 8, 2026 PCD outlook. IDC’s June 2 analysis had put ASP growth at 17% and warned Q4 2026 shipments could fall 20% year over year.

IDC does not break out gaming notebooks in its public tables, so these are all notebooks. For the Q2 2026 shipment picture, see our laptop sales statistics.

Noah Mc: Here’s the tension the shipment reports can’t show you. Units are falling, yet the laptop share of the gaming install base went up across the same months. Gamers who already own a laptop are keeping it, and those buying are skewing to Blackwell xx60 machines. Expect fewer, pricier laptops, and an install base that ages rather than shrinks.

Why can’t you find NVIDIA’s gaming revenue anymore?

NVIDIA’s Q2 fiscal 2027 results (quarter ended July 26, 2026) no longer headline a standalone Gaming segment. The release reports Edge Computing revenue of $7.2 billion, up 13% quarter over quarter and 27% year over year, alongside Data Center revenue of $89.0 billion out of $96.2 billion total. Axis Intelligence Research calculates Edge Computing at 7.5% of NVIDIA’s quarterly revenue. GeForce laptop GPUs sit inside that broader line, so any “NVIDIA gaming laptop revenue” figure you see for 2026 is an estimate, not a reported number.

What Did RTX 50 Series Bring to Gaming Laptops?

Per NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 launch announcement, Blackwell-generation Max-Q technology extends battery life by up to 40%, and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation generates up to three frames per rendered frame. RTX 5090, 5080, and 5070 Ti laptops were scheduled from March 2025 and RTX 5070 laptops from April 2025.

Those are vendor claims, not measured results. Axis has not run independent battery tests for this page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gaming Laptops in 2026

What percentage of PC gamers play on a laptop?

At least 15.11% of Steam GPUs were dedicated NVIDIA laptop chips in August 2026, per Axis Intelligence Research’s LGFS calculation from Valve data. The true figure is higher, since small SKUs below Valve’s listing threshold aren’t counted.

Is an 8GB laptop GPU still enough for 2026 games?

8GB VRAM remains the second most common configuration on Steam at 25.74% (August 2026), and the top laptop GPUs (RTX 4060 and 5060 Laptop) are 8GB-class parts. Developers target that tier because the audience sits there.

Should I buy a gaming laptop now or wait for prices to drop?

IDC expects PC average selling prices to rise 18.3% in 2026 and says pricing is unlikely to return to 2025 levels even as memory supply recovers. Waiting has historically meant a lower price; IDC’s current outlook says the opposite for 2026–2027.

Which laptop GPU is gaining users fastest on Steam?

The RTX 5060 Laptop GPU, up 0.95 points between April and August 2026, to 2.66%. That’s the largest gain of any laptop GPU in Valve’s survey over the period.

Do AMD gaming laptops show up on Steam?

No discrete AMD Radeon laptop GPU clears Valve’s listing threshold in August 2026. AMD’s presence in laptops is visible through integrated graphics such as the Radeon 780M (0.29%).

Are RTX 5090 and 5080 laptops popular?

Neither appears in the August 2026 Steam video card table, meaning each sits below Valve’s reporting cut-off. The highest listed RTX 50 laptop part is the RTX 5070 Ti Laptop at 0.44%.

What screen resolution should a gaming laptop have in 2026?

1080p still covers 50.52% of Steam users, but 2560×1600, the common 16:10 laptop QHD+ panel, rose 0.61 points in August 2026 to 5.71%, one of the fastest gains on the chart.

How many gaming laptops are sold per year?

IDC does not publish a public gaming-notebook series. Total notebooks were 204.9 million in 2025 (sum of IDC quarterly data) and are forecast at 181.3 million for 2026. Figures claiming a precise gaming-laptop unit count should name their tracker.

Methodology

Data collection. Axis Intelligence Research retrieved all figures on September 27, 2026 from: Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey (PC video card usage and combined overview, August 2026 release, with April–July columns); IDC’s Worldwide Personal Computing Device outlook (updated June 8, 2026) and IDC’s June 2, 2026 market blog; and NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 results and January 2025 RTX 50 launch press releases.

LGFS construction. LGFS sums the percentage shares of every SKU carrying “Laptop GPU” in its name in Valve’s “All Video Cards” table. It excludes integrated graphics, handheld GPUs (Steam Deck), and any laptop SKU below Valve’s listing threshold. LGFS is therefore a floor, not a ceiling. August 2026 is the baseline reading published by Axis; the April–July values are computed retroactively from the same Valve columns with the same formula.

Derived figures. RTX 50 laptop share = sum of RTX 5050/5060/5070/5070 Ti Laptop. Laptop share of Blackwell = laptop RTX 50 ÷ (laptop + desktop RTX 50). Gain ratio = laptop share change ÷ desktop share change for the same GPU. Tier split: xx70 and above = upper tier. IDC 2025 notebook total = sum of IDC’s four published quarterly notebook values.

What the data can’t tell you. Steam’s survey is opt-in and reflects Steam users, not all laptop owners; monthly regional sampling shifts cause swings such as July 2026. IDC figures cover all notebooks, gaming and non-gaming.
