Quick Answer: What Is the Best Grammarly Alternative in 2026?

According to Axis Intelligence’s Writing Assistant Fit Score (WAFS), LanguageTool Premium is the best Grammarly alternative in 2026, scoring 71.5 out of 100. Its annual plan works out to about $68 a year at the ECB’s July 1, 2026 euro rate, versus $144 for Grammarly Pro, and it checks text in more than 30 languages.

Key Findings

  • According to Axis Intelligence, LanguageTool Premium leads the 2026 WAFS ranking at 71.5 out of 100, ahead of Trinka (70.5) and QuillBot (68.9).
  • Grammarly Pro costs $144 per member per year on annual billing, or $30 per member per month on monthly billing, according to Grammarly’s support center.
  • According to Axis Intelligence calculations, six of the eight ranked alternatives cost less per year than Grammarly Pro’s $144 annual plan; Sapling ties it and Ginger’s verified monthly list price exceeds it.
  • LanguageTool’s monthly plan costs roughly 4 times its annual-equivalent monthly rate, the steepest commitment penalty in the field, per Axis Intelligence analysis of LanguageTool’s published price list.
  • ProWritingAid is the only alternative here that still sells a lifetime license, priced at $399 for Premium, according to its pricing page.

How Does Grammarly Pro Pricing Compare to the Alternatives?

Start with the baseline, because every “cheaper alternative” claim is a claim against it. Grammarly’s support center lists Pro at $30 per member per month, $60 per member per quarter, or $144 per member per year, with plans capped at 149 seats. Pro includes 2,000 generative AI prompts per month, and Pro absorbed the old Business plan.

Read the per-member line twice. A 12-person team on annual billing pays $144 x 12 = $1,728 a year before anyone opens a document. On monthly billing the same team pays $30 x 12 x 12 = $4,320. That gap is the first thing a finance team should model, and it is the reason most of the alternatives below win on price before features enter the conversation.

USD conversions for LanguageTool use the European Central Bank reference rate of 1.1383 USD per euro on July 1, 2026. LanguageTool states its prices include VAT, so a US buyer may see a different checkout figure. “Not verified” means the vendor’s page did not display that figure when we checked; we do not estimate missing prices.

Which Grammarly Alternative Is Cheapest Per Year?

According to Axis Intelligence calculations, the annual savings versus Grammarly Pro’s $144 run as follows: LanguageTool about $75.83, Trinka about $63.96, Wordtune $60.12, QuillBot $44.05, Hemingway Editor Plus $44.00, ProWritingAid $24.00, and Sapling $0. Ginger is the one tool where we could only verify a monthly list price ($13), which annualizes to $156, or $12 more than Grammarly’s annual plan. Ginger was running a 50% promotion when we checked, so its real cost is likely lower; we score only what we could verify.

The commitment penalty matters as much as the headline. Per Axis Intelligence analysis of published price lists, paying month to month costs 2.4 times the annual-equivalent rate at QuillBot, 2.5 times at Grammarly, 3 times at ProWritingAid, and roughly 4 times at LanguageTool. If you only need a checker for a three-month thesis sprint, LanguageTool’s quarterly plan (EUR 39.90) or QuillBot’s quarterly plan beats every monthly option on this list.

The Axis Writing Assistant Fit Score (WAFS): How the Ranking Was Built

The Writing Assistant Fit Score is an Axis Intelligence metric that rates each tool from 0 to 100 across six weighted criteria. Every input comes from a vendor pricing page, help-center article or published spec, retrieved October 3, 2026. The formula:

WAFS = 10 x (0.30 x Price + 0.15 x Free tier + 0.15 x AI rewriting + 0.15 x Integrations + 0.10 x Languages + 0.15 x Specialist depth)

Each criterion is scored 0 to 10. Price is calculated, not judged: Price score = 10 x (lowest annual-equivalent monthly price in the field / the tool’s annual-equivalent monthly price). The lowest price in the field is LanguageTool’s $5.68.

The spread is tight at the top. Four points separate first from fifth, which tells you something the vendors’ comparison pages will not: for a general writer, the top five are close substitutes, and the decision should turn on the one criterion you care about most. A multilingual team and a dissertation writer should not buy the same tool, even though both tools sit within one point of each other.

Best Grammarly Alternatives in 2026, Ranked

1. LanguageTool Premium: Best Overall Grammarly Alternative

Verdict: The cheapest annual plan in the field and the only multilingual checker here. The free tier is the weak spot.

Standout: LanguageTool’s developer page states its checking technology supports more than 30 languages, including English, French, Spanish and German. For a team that writes in English and one other language, no other tool on this list competes.

Drawbacks: LanguageTool restricted its browser extension to Premium users, citing server costs. The free plan checks only up to 10,000 characters per text and allows three AI paraphrased sentences per day. Monthly billing at EUR 19.90 is roughly 4 times the annual-equivalent rate.

Best for: Multilingual writers, European teams, anyone who will commit to a year.

Pricing (verified October 3, 2026): EUR 19.90 monthly, EUR 39.90 quarterly, EUR 59.89 yearly, EUR 99.90 for two years; team plans for up to 20 users at EUR 56.90 per user per year. Up to 20% education discount.

2. Trinka Premium: Best for Academic and Technical Writing

Verdict: The specialist pick, and priced like a budget tool.

Standout: Trinka bundles subject-specific corrections, journal manuscript support, an MS Word add-in, AI detection and plagiarism checking into Premium, per Trinka’s own comparison page. Its Confidential Data Plan offers an offline, on-device desktop app with zero data retention, billed at $500 a year.

Drawbacks: Built for English academic and formal prose; creative writers will find little here. Monthly pricing was not displayed in a form we could verify.

Best for: Researchers, graduate students, scientific and regulatory writers.

Pricing (verified October 3, 2026): Premium at about $6.67 per month on a yearly plan (about $80 a year), per Trinka. Premium Plus adds plagiarism or AI-detection reports for up to 240 pages, per the Trinka pricing page.

3. QuillBot Premium: Best All-in-One Rewriting Suite

Verdict: The broadest toolbox per dollar: paraphraser, grammar checker, plagiarism checker, AI detector, humanizer and summarizer under one subscription.

Standout: QuillBot Premium unlocks full paraphrasing in unlimited modes, advanced grammar recommendations and full AI Detector access.

Drawbacks: The free plan caps paraphrasing at 125 words. QuillBot’s center of gravity is rewriting, not line-level style editing.

Best for: Students and content writers who paraphrase, summarize and check originality in one place.

Pricing (verified October 3, 2026): $8.33 per month billed annually ($99.95 a year), $39.95 every three months, or $19.95 monthly. Prices can adjust by region at checkout.

4. ProWritingAid Premium: Best for Long-Form and Fiction

Verdict: The deepest editing reports on the list. Not the cheapest, and English only.

Standout: ProWritingAid Premium includes 25+ writing analysis reports, a custom style guide, unlimited Rephrases and one Chapter Critique per day. It integrates with Word, Google Docs and Scrivener. It is also the only tool here with a lifetime license.

Drawbacks: The free plan limits each report to 2 runs per day on 500 words. Plagiarism checks cost extra on every plan. The pricing page states the product is English only.

Best for: Novelists, nonfiction authors, editors working on manuscripts.

Pricing (verified October 3, 2026): Premium $30 monthly, $120 yearly ($10 per month), or $399 lifetime. Premium Pro $36 monthly, $144 yearly, or $699 lifetime. Three-day money-back guarantee on yearly and lifetime plans; no refunds on monthly plans.

5. Wordtune Unlimited: Best Budget Pick

Verdict: Unlimited rewrites for less than the price of a coffee a week.

Standout: Wordtune Unlimited removes caps on rewrites, AI suggestions and summaries, and adds vocabulary, clarity and fluency improvements.

Drawbacks: Wordtune does not offer refunds; you must cancel before the next cycle. Its positioning is English improvement, so multilingual users should look at LanguageTool. Integrations listed are Chrome, Edge and iOS.

Best for: Non-native English speakers polishing emails and short-form text.

Pricing (verified October 3, 2026): Unlimited $6.99 per month billed annually; Advanced $4.89 per month billed annually with 30 rewrites per day. Free plan: 10 rewrites per day. 30% discount for students, educators and nonprofits. Three-day trial.

6. Ginger Premium: Best for Translation Alongside Correction

Verdict: Strong feature set, unclear long-term price.

Standout: Ginger Premium pairs unlimited rephrasing and full-sentence corrections with translation into 40+ languages, plus native Microsoft Office (Windows) and Google Docs integrations.

Drawbacks: We could verify only the $13 monthly list price; the annual price was not displayed in a form we could log. Office integration is Windows only.

Best for: Writers who translate drafts as often as they correct them.

Pricing (verified October 3, 2026): $13 monthly list, shown at $6.50 during a 50% promotion. Ginger advertises a 70% education discount.

7. Sapling: Best Free Grammarly Alternative

Verdict: The easiest free on-ramp, and the right pick for support and sales teams.

Standout: Every new account gets a one-month Sapling Pro trial with no credit card. Sapling runs in Chrome, Edge and Firefox plus Word, Outlook and Google Docs, and adds team snippet libraries.

Drawbacks: At $12 per month on annual billing, Sapling Pro saves nothing versus Grammarly Pro. Its AI detector is trained for English only.

Best for: Customer-facing teams, and anyone who wants to test a paid tier free for a month.

Pricing (verified October 3, 2026): Pro at $12 per month billed annually; Enterprise priced by seats and contract length.

8. Hemingway Editor Plus: Best for Readability

Verdict: A focused readability tool, not a full Grammarly replacement.

Standout: The free Hemingway web editor scores readability and flags dense sentences; Hemingway Editor Plus adds AI fixes, with unlimited grammar fixes outside its AI sentence allotment.

Drawbacks: Narrowest integration footprint in the ranking (web and Mac/PC desktop). AI rewrites draw from a monthly allotment.

Best for: Bloggers and marketers who want plainer prose, not a full proofreader.

Pricing (verified October 3, 2026): Annual plan from $100 a year ($8.33 per month). Two-week trial that ends without charging you.

Best Grammarly Alternative by Use Case

Source: Axis Intelligence analysis of vendor documentation, October 2026.

The lifetime license deserves a line of math. ProWritingAid’s $399 lifetime Premium equals 3.3 years of its own $120 annual plan, or 2.8 years of Grammarly Pro at $144. If you expect to write seriously for longer than that, and you trust the vendor to stay in business, the lifetime license is the cheapest Premium plan on this page over time.

How We Evaluated

This ranking is documentation-based. No Axis Intelligence author ran hands-on accuracy tests for this edition, so this page makes no claims about error-detection rates, response times or false-positive counts. Where vendors publish their own performance figures, we did not use them as scoring inputs, because they are not independently verified.

What we did: on October 3, 2026, Elena Rodriguez retrieved each vendor’s pricing page, help-center billing articles and feature documentation, and logged every figure with its URL and retrieval date in the fact table attached to this article’s methodology record. We scored eight paid alternatives across six criteria. Price is computed from a formula, so it cannot be nudged. The other five criteria use a published 0 to 10 rubric: free tier (documented word, run and rewrite limits), AI rewriting (unlimited plans score 9 to 10, capped or unquantified allowances score 6 to 8), integrations (count of documented surfaces such as browser extensions, Word, Google Docs, desktop and mobile), languages (number of checking languages the vendor documents; English-only scores 3), and specialist depth (dedicated capabilities such as manuscript reports, academic corrections or readability scoring).

Three scope decisions shape the result. First, missing prices are never estimated: Ginger is scored on its verified $13 monthly list price, which lowers its price score. Second, LanguageTool’s euro prices were converted at the ECB’s July 1, 2026 reference rate; a different rate shifts its price score slightly but does not change its first place, because its euro price is the lowest by a wide margin. Third, we excluded DeepL Write Pro from the ranked list because it is sold only as an add-on to a DeepL Translator Pro subscription, per DeepL’s terms, which makes its standalone cost non-comparable.

Grammarly itself is shown as an unranked baseline. Ranking the incumbent against its own alternatives would answer a different question. Verdicts follow the matrix, regardless of any commercial relationship.

Grammarly Alternatives Buyer’s Guide: What to Check Before You Pay

Price the per-seat math, not the sticker. Grammarly, LanguageTool teams and Sapling price per user. Multiply by headcount and by billing cycle before you compare.

Check refund terms before the trial ends. Wordtune states it offers no refunds. ProWritingAid refunds yearly and lifetime plans only within three days. Hemingway’s trial ends without charging you. The FTC has published an enforcement policy statement on negative option marketing that covers auto-renewing subscriptions; read your vendor’s cancellation terms against it.

Match the tool to the writing, not the brand. A dissertation needs Trinka’s academic checks. A novel needs ProWritingAid’s reports. A support inbox needs Sapling’s snippets. A general-purpose checker is the compromise you make when you write everything.

Ask where your text goes. ProWritingAid states it never stores text entered into its editor. Trinka sells a zero-retention, on-device plan. If you handle client or patient documents, read the data terms before you install a browser extension that sees every text box.

Watch the AI allowance. Grammarly Pro caps generative prompts at 2,000 per member per month. Wordtune Unlimited and QuillBot Premium do not cap rewrites in the same way. If AI rewriting is the main reason you are leaving Grammarly, this line decides it.
