According to Axis Intelligence Research, the world’s unicorn herd would take 11.5 years to clear at the current exit pace. Hurun counts 1,603 unicorns worth $8 trillion against 139 exits in the year to January 1, 2026, while new unicorns arrive at 2.22 for every one that leaves. The herd is growing faster than the exit door.
Quick Answer
There are 1,862 private unicorns on the Crunchbase Unicorn Board as of September 10, 2026, and 1,603 on the Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2026, which uses a stricter definition. Hurun values the herd at $8 trillion, up 43% in a year. According to Axis Intelligence Research, the Unicorn Liquidity Gap (ULG) stands at 11.5 years: the time needed to exit every current unicorn at the trailing 12-month rate of IPOs and acquisitions.
Key Findings
- According to Axis Intelligence Research, the global Unicorn Liquidity Gap (ULG) reads 11.5 years, computed as Hurun’s 1,603 unicorns divided by 139 exits (75 IPOs and 64 mergers or acquisitions) in the year to January 1, 2026.
- According to Axis Intelligence Research, China carries the longest exit backlog at 13.1 years (381 unicorns, 29 exits), against 10.6 years in the United States (806 unicorns, 76 exits) and 11.2 years in the European Union (112 unicorns, 10 exits).
- According to Axis Intelligence Research, the 10 most valuable unicorns hold 48.8% of all unicorn value on Hurun’s index ($3.9 trillion of $8 trillion), and the top three alone hold 28.7%.
- According to Axis Intelligence Research, the average AI unicorn is worth an estimated $13.4 billion, 2.78 times the $4.81 billion average for a fintech unicorn, even though the two sectors hold almost the same number of companies (215 vs 216, Hurun 2026).
- Crunchbase data show 276 new unicorns minted in 2026 through September 10, already 41.5% above the 195 minted in all of 2025 on the same list count, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation.
How Many Unicorn Companies Are There in 2026?
The answer depends on whose rulebook you use, and the gap between the two leading counts is itself informative.
The Crunchbase Unicorn Board lists any private company valued at $1 billion or more in a priced funding round. Its private unicorn list stood at 1,862 companies on September 10, 2026, with 658 cumulative exited unicorns and 489 emerging unicorns valued between $500 million and $1 billion, per the August 2026 Crunchbase unicorn report.
The Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2026 is narrower. It admits only companies founded after 2000, still unlisted, and valued at $1 billion or more, with a January 1, 2026 cut-off and major revaluations updated to its June 25 release. It finds 1,603 unicorns across 52 countries and 299 cities, up 5.3% year over year.
Crunchbase vs Hurun: why the two unicorn counts differ
| Measure | Crunchbase Unicorn Board | Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unicorn count | 1,862 | 1,603 | Crunchbase (Sep 10, 2026); Hurun (Jan 1, 2026 cut-off) |
| Founding-year filter | None | Founded after 2000 | Methodology pages |
| Valuation basis | Latest priced round, no writedowns | Latest sizeable round, with downward adjustments by comparables | Methodology pages |
| United States count | 961 | 806 | Crunchbase; Hurun |
| Decacorns ($10B+) | 82 (end of 2025) | 91 | Crunchbase; Hurun |
Axis Intelligence Research does not average these counts into a single global figure. Crunchbase holds companies at their last priced round and does not mark them down for investor writedowns; Hurun mixes in comparables for companies it judges to be falling. A blended number would carry neither methodology. The decline to merge is logged as a retracted row in the dataset.
Mia Scarlett’s read: The two lists measure different things. Crunchbase is a ledger of what the last check said. Hurun is closer to an analyst’s mark. When a reader asks how many unicorns exist, the honest answer is a range of 1,603 to 1,862, and the 259-company gap is mostly older companies and stale marks that Crunchbase keeps and Hurun prunes.
How Many New Unicorns Were Created in 2026?
Unicorn creation in 2026 is running at its fastest pace since the 2021 peak. According to Crunchbase, 195 companies joined the board in the first half of 2026, already above the 193 minted in all of 2025, as reported in its H1 2026 unicorn analysis. July added 40, the highest monthly count in more than four years, and August added 29, per the July 2026 report.
New unicorns by year (Crunchbase list counts as of September 10, 2026)
| Year | New unicorns | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 102 | Crunchbase |
| 2024 | 119 | Crunchbase |
| 2025 | 195 | Crunchbase |
| 2026 (through Sep 10) | 276 | Crunchbase |
One discrepancy deserves daylight: Crunchbase reported 193 new unicorns for 2025 in its August 10 article, while its live list showed 195 a month later. Lists get backfilled as late rounds surface. We publish both values in the CSV rather than pick one.
Who is minting the new unicorns?
The first-half cohort averaged 32.5 new unicorns per month. The United States produced 110 of the 195, China 38 and the United Kingdom 13. China’s first-half count is 3.8 times its full-year 2025 total of 10, the sharpest single-country acceleration in the data. In August, the U.S. added 16 of 29 and China 4, with semiconductors the second-largest sector at 5 new names.
The cohort is also younger. 15 of July’s 40 new unicorns, or 37.5%, were under three years old. Hurun counts 19 companies founded in 2025 that already reached unicorn status.
Mia Scarlett’s read: The headline count flatters the cohort less than the entry valuations do. The H1 class added roughly $440 billion in value on $80 billion of capital raised, a 5.5x value-to-capital multiple, and a mean entry value of $2.26 billion per company. That is a priced-round number, set by the marginal buyer, and the marginal buyer in 2026 is paying for speed.
How Much Are Unicorns Worth?
Hurun values its 1,603 unicorns at $8 trillion, up 43% from a year earlier. The mean unicorn is therefore worth $4.99 billion, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation. Strip out the top 10, and the remaining 1,593 companies average $2.57 billion.
On the Crunchbase side, the board peaked at $9.9 trillion in May 2026, per Crunchbase’s May unicorn report, before the SpaceX listing removed the largest company from the private ledger. Axis Intelligence Research’s canonical registry reading is $8.9 trillion as of August 5, 2026, published and maintained on our startup statistics page, which owns that figure. For context, the board stood at $5.4 trillion at the end of 2024 and added $1.6 trillion in 2025, according to Crunchbase’s year-end 2025 review.
The most valuable unicorns in 2026
| Hurun rank | Company | Valuation | Country | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anthropic | $965B | United States | Hurun 2026 |
| 2 | OpenAI | $852B | United States | Hurun 2026 |
| 3 | ByteDance | $480B | China | Hurun 2026 |
| Top 10 | Ant Group | $87B | China | Hurun 2026 |
| 7 | Revolut | $75B | United Kingdom | Hurun 2026 |
| 8 | Binance | $70B | Malta | Hurun 2026 |
| 9 | Shein | $67B | China | Hurun 2026 |
| 10 | Anduril | $61B | United States | Hurun 2026 |
Hurun counts 5 “Thunderbirds” worth $100 billion or more and 91 “Griffins” worth $10 billion or more. The entry ticket to Hurun’s top 10 rose to $61 billion. The remaining top-10 places belong to Stripe and Databricks, whose valuations Hurun publishes only in image tables, so they are not restated here.
How concentrated is unicorn value?
According to Axis Intelligence Research, the top 10 unicorns hold 48.8% of Hurun’s $8 trillion, and the top three hold 28.7%. Griffins make up 5.7% of the count.
This reading is higher than the 34.9% top-10 share on our startup statistics page, and the gap is a definitional and timing difference, not a contradiction. That figure is computed on the Crunchbase board at August 5, 2026, which carries more companies at older marks; Hurun’s top-10 values reflect later revaluations of the largest AI labs. Both are published with their basis.
Mia Scarlett’s read: Two AI labs account for $1.8 trillion of value that did not exist at that scale a year ago. Concentration at this level changes what “the unicorn market” means as a statistic. An index of 1,603 companies is, by value, mostly a bet on three of them, and every aggregate on this page should be read with that footnote attached.
What Is the Unicorn Liquidity Gap (ULG)?
The Unicorn Liquidity Gap (ULG) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric that measures how many years it would take to exit the entire current unicorn population at the trailing 12-month pace of IPOs and acquisitions. A rising ULG means the private herd is outgrowing the exit market; a falling ULG means liquidity is catching up.
Formula:
ULG (years) = current unicorn count ÷ unicorn exits (IPO + M&A) over the trailing 12 months
A companion reading, the ULG replacement ratio, divides new unicorns by exits over the same period. Above 1.0, the herd grows; below 1.0, it shrinks.
Inputs (Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2026, year to January 1, 2026): 1,603 unicorns; 139 exits, of which 75 were IPOs and 64 were mergers or acquisitions; 308 new unicorns.
- Global ULG: 1,603 ÷ 139 = 11.5 years
- Global replacement ratio: 308 ÷ 139 = 2.22 new unicorns per exit
The Hurun flows reconcile within one company: 308 new, minus 139 promoted, minus 88 demoted below $1 billion, gives a net of 81 against Hurun’s reported net gain of 80. We publish the one-company gap rather than adjust it away.
Unicorn Liquidity Gap by region
| Region | Unicorns | New unicorns | Exits (IPO + M&A) | ULG (years) | Replacement ratio | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Global | 1,603 | 308 | 139 | 11.5 | 2.22 | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| United States | 806 | 156 | 76 (34 IPO, 42 M&A) | 10.6 | 2.05 | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| China | 381 | 80 | 29 (26 IPO, 3 M&A) | 13.1 | 2.76 | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| European Union | 112 | 18 | 10 (2 IPO, 8 M&A) | 11.2 | 1.80 | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Rest of World | 416 | 72 | 34 | 12.2 | 2.12 | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
Rest of World is derived by subtraction: 1,603 minus 806 minus 381 gives 416 unicorns; 139 minus 76 minus 29 gives 34 exits.
Mia Scarlett’s read: The regional split says something the global aggregate hides. China’s backlog is the longest even though its IPO count (26) is close to the U.S. figure (34), because China barely uses M&A as an exit: three acquisitions against 42 in the United States. Its replacement ratio of 2.76 means the queue is lengthening fastest there. The European Union has the opposite profile, the lowest replacement ratio at 1.80 and an exit mix tilted toward trade sales. A European unicorn’s likeliest buyer is a strategic acquirer, not a public market.
Is the exit market catching up in 2026?
The 2026 data point in the right direction. Crunchbase counted 32 IPOs above $1 billion and 24 acquisitions at or above $1 billion in Q2 2026, with acquisition value of $113 billion, the highest quarter on record, per its Q2 2026 global funding report. SpaceX listed at $1.77 trillion, raising $75 billion, and agreed to buy Anysphere, the maker of Cursor, for $60 billion. Hurun counted 75 unicorn IPOs in its latest year against 34 the year before, and IPOs made up 54% of unicorn exits.
Inflows are still outrunning outflows. In August 2026, Crunchbase recorded 29 new unicorns and 9 exits (3 IPOs, 6 acquisitions), a monthly replacement ratio of 3.22 and a net board addition of 20 companies. Until monthly exits approach monthly minting, the ULG will not fall.
Unicorns by Country and City
Unicorns by country (Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2026)

| European Union (total) | 112 | Hurun 2026 |
| Southeast Asia (total) | 35 | Hurun 2026 |
| GCC (total) | 9 | Hurun 2026 |
The United States holds 50.3% of Hurun’s unicorns and 51.6% of Crunchbase’s private list (961 of 1,862), both Axis Intelligence Research calculations. California alone has 427 unicorns valued at approximately $3.6 trillion. On the Crunchbase list, Asia accounts for 29.4% (547), Europe 13.6% (254) and Latin America 2.1% (39).
The European Union’s 112 unicorns are worth $415 billion combined, less than half of Anthropic’s valuation alone. Southeast Asia’s 35 unicorns are worth $80 billion, and the Gulf’s 9 are worth $45 billion. Our fintech statistics page breaks down how many of those regional unicorns are financial-services companies.
Unicorns by city

| Paris | 27 | Hurun 2026 |
| Bengaluru | 25 | Hurun 2026 |
| Singapore | 20 | Hurun 2026 |
Mia Scarlett’s read: San Francisco alone carries more unicorns than the United Kingdom, India, Germany and France combined (202). Geography in this market follows capital and talent clustering, not GDP.
Which Industries Produce the Most Unicorns?
Fintech still leads by count, but AI leads by value, and the gap between the two is now the defining feature of the herd. Hurun counts 216 fintech unicorns holding 13% of total value and 215 AI unicorns holding 36%.
Unicorn value density by sector
According to Axis Intelligence Research, dividing each sector’s value by its unicorn count produces a value density reading that shows where the money actually sits. For the ten largest sectors, value is estimated from Hurun’s rounded percentage shares of $8 trillion; for the others, Hurun publishes dollar values directly.
| Sector | Unicorns | Share or value | Value per unicorn (Axis estimate) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI | 215 | 36% | $13.4B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Media & Entertainment | 53 | 8% | $12.08B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Data & Analytics | 30 | $234B | $7.8B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| FinTech | 216 | 13% | $4.81B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Blockchain | 67 | 4% | $4.78B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Robotics | 50 | $175B | $3.5B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| E-Commerce | 92 | 4% | $3.48B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Aerospace & Defence | 44 | $140B | $3.18B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| SaaS | 181 | 7% | $3.09B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Semiconductors | 55 | 2% | $2.91B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| New Energy | 62 | 2% | $2.58B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Cybersecurity | 75 | 2% | $2.13B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| Life Sciences | 152 | 4% | $2.11B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
| ClimateTech | 17 | $24B | $1.41B | Axis Intelligence Research, from Hurun 2026 |
Two readings need context. Media & Entertainment’s density is driven by ByteDance’s $480 billion valuation; without it, the sector would sit near the bottom. AI’s density is driven by Anthropic and OpenAI. According to Axis Intelligence Research, AI unicorns are worth an estimated $2.88 trillion combined, and the average AI unicorn is valued at 2.78 times the average fintech unicorn.
Mia Scarlett’s read: Value density separates sectors where investors pay for a platform from sectors where they pay for a product. Cybersecurity, life sciences and climate tech cluster near the $2 billion floor: many companies, each valued close to the threshold, and each one exposed to a down round that would demote it. Those are the sectors where Hurun’s 88 demotions are most likely to come from next. Our AI investment statistics trace how much capital went into the AI side of that split.
Who Funds Unicorns, and Who Can Invest?
Hurun ranks Tiger Global as the most prolific unicorn investor with 166 investments, ahead of SoftBank at 146 and Sequoia Capital at 135.
Capital in 2026 is more concentrated than at any point in the data. Crunchbase reports global venture funding of $510 billion in H1 2026, above the $440 billion invested in all of 2025, with OpenAI and Anthropic alone taking $217 billion, or 43%. Anthropic raised $65 billion in Q2 alone, and more than 70% of Q2 venture capital went to AI-focused companies. Our fintech funding statistics show how sharply the same concentration has hit financial technology.
Most individuals cannot buy into private unicorn rounds directly. Under SEC rules, a natural person generally qualifies as an accredited investor with a net worth above $1 million excluding the primary residence, or income above $200,000 individually ($300,000 jointly) in each of the prior two years. Our US high-net-worth statistics show how small a slice of households clears that bar.
The public-market side of the equation is not easy for smaller issuers either. SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda noted in April 2026 remarks to the Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee that small companies made up 44% of 2024 IPOs but raised only 3% of IPO capital.
Mia Scarlett’s read: Put the SEC figure next to the ULG and the picture is consistent. The IPO window that reopened in 2026 is a large-cap window. It cleared SpaceX at $1.77 trillion and a run of billion-dollar listings, but the median unicorn, valued at an average of $2.57 billion outside the top 10, is the company most likely to wait.
Methodology
Data collection. Axis Intelligence Research retrieved every figure on this page on October 4, 2026, from documents opened during production: Crunchbase News unicorn and funding reports (May, June-July and August 2026 releases, the H1 2026 unicorn analysis and the year-end 2025 review), the Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2026 release (June 25, 2026), and two U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission pages. Each row in the CSV records the source organization, document, URL, as-of date and retrieval date.
Unicorn Liquidity Gap (ULG). ULG = unicorn stock ÷ trailing 12-month exits (IPO + M&A). Replacement ratio = new unicorns ÷ exits. The global and regional readings use Hurun’s January 1, 2026 snapshot so that stock and flows share one definition and one window. The August 2026 monthly replacement ratio uses Crunchbase monthly flows and is reported separately, never mixed with Hurun inputs. Demotions below $1 billion are excluded from exits because they are not liquidity events.
Value density. Sector value ÷ sector unicorn count. Where Hurun publishes only a rounded percentage share, sector value is estimated as $8 trillion × share, and the result is labeled an estimate.
Concentration. Top-10 and top-3 shares divide Hurun’s published valuations by Hurun’s $8 trillion total.
Scope. Hurun and Crunchbase counts are never merged; they are reported side by side. Valuations are post-money figures from priced rounds and do not reflect secondary-market prices or 409A valuations. Two calculations were considered and declined, and are logged as retracted rows in the CSV: deriving the Crunchbase board value from the “5% of current value” phrasing in the H1 report, and blending the two counts into a single global number.

Unicorn Market Questions Answered
How long does the average unicorn wait for an IPO or acquisition?
At the trailing exit pace, the global unicorn herd would take 11.5 years to clear, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s Unicorn Liquidity Gap (ULG). The backlog is 10.6 years in the United States and 13.1 years in China, based on Hurun’s 2026 index.
Why do Crunchbase and Hurun report different unicorn counts?
Crunchbase counted 1,862 private unicorns on September 10, 2026, while Hurun counted 1,603 at its January 1, 2026 cut-off. Hurun admits only companies founded after 2000 and marks falling companies down using comparables; Crunchbase keeps each company at its last priced round.
What happens to a unicorn whose valuation falls below $1 billion?
Hurun removes it from the index as a “demotion.” In its 2026 edition, 88 unicorns were demoted below the $1 billion threshold, compared with 139 that exited through IPOs or acquisitions. Crunchbase does not mark companies down for investor writedowns, so a fallen unicorn can remain on its board until a new priced round.
Which country has the most unicorns in 2026?
The United States, with 806 of Hurun’s 1,603 unicorns (50.3%) and 961 of Crunchbase’s 1,862 (51.6%). China is second with 381 on Hurun’s index, followed by the United Kingdom with 80 and India with 61.
Is AI now the largest unicorn sector?
By value, yes: AI unicorns hold 36% of Hurun’s $8 trillion total. By count, fintech still leads narrowly with 216 companies against 215 for AI. Axis Intelligence Research estimates the average AI unicorn at $13.4 billion, 2.78 times the fintech average.
How fast are new unicorns being created in 2026?
Crunchbase recorded 276 new unicorns in 2026 through September 10, compared with 195 in all of 2025. The first half averaged 32.5 new unicorns a month, and July set a four-year monthly high of 40.
What is the difference between a unicorn, a decacorn and a Thunderbird?
A unicorn is a private company valued at $1 billion or more. A decacorn, which Hurun calls a Griffin, is valued at $10 billion or more; Hurun counts 91. Hurun’s “Thunderbird” label covers private companies worth $100 billion or more, of which there are 5.
Can individual investors buy shares in unicorns before an IPO?
Most private unicorn rounds are limited to accredited investors. Under SEC rules, an individual generally qualifies with a net worth above $1 million excluding the primary residence, or income above $200,000 ($300,000 jointly) in each of the prior two years.
