Quick Answer

Bitcoin hit $126,073 on October 6, 2025 — its all-time high — then fell 47% to trade near $64,000–$67,000 by mid-June 2026. That correction did not dislodge institutional confidence: BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust held $54 billion in assets under management as of February 2026, the US federal government formally designated ~328,000 BTC as a Strategic Reserve asset, and spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively crossed $135 billion AUM in early 2026. The story of Bitcoin in 2026 is not a price story. It’s a structural legitimacy story — and the price just got complicated.

Axis Intelligence Research’s cross-source analysis of on-chain data, SEC filings, and Federal Register records finds: Bitcoin’s circulating supply reached approximately 19.86 million BTC as of June 2026, leaving fewer than 1.15 million coins to be mined before the 21-million hard cap. The April 2024 halving locked the block reward at 3.125 BTC — 450 BTC issued daily — and the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, established by Executive Order 14233 on March 6, 2025, holds approximately 328,000 BTC, making the federal government the largest known state holder in the world.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research calculates that Bitcoin’s all-time high of $126,073 on October 6, 2025 was followed by a 47.4% drawdown to approximately $64,000–$67,000 by mid-June 2026 — a correction of similar magnitude to post-ATH retracements in 2021 (−56% from the January 2021 peak before recovery) but occurring against a substantially more institutionalized market structure.
  2. Per Axis Intelligence Research’s analysis of BlackRock’s SEC filings and the iShares IBIT fact sheet, the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF commanded $54.12 billion in AUM as of February 10, 2026, holding approximately 786,300 BTC in Coinbase custody — representing close to 49% of the entire US spot Bitcoin ETF market by assets.
  3. According to Axis Intelligence Research’s reading of the Federal Register (EO 14233, March 11, 2025) and Wikipedia’s tracking of government disclosures, the US federal government holds approximately 328,372 BTC as of February 2026 — the largest confirmed state holder globally, accumulated entirely through criminal and civil asset forfeiture, with no purchase mandate in the current executive order.
  4. The April 2024 halving reduced Bitcoin’s block reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, cutting daily issuance from ~900 BTC to ~450 BTC; as of mid-2026, Axis Intelligence Research notes that over 95.2% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist has already been mined, entering what mining analysts now term the “Final Million” era.
  5. Axis Intelligence Research finds that Bitcoin’s network hashrate stabilized at approximately 1,004 EH/s following a 5.8% post-ATH contraction, with the US maintaining 37–38% of global hashrate dominance per AMINA Bank’s post-halving analysis — a structural concentration with regulatory implications that no competitor page has quantified against the reserve data.

Bitcoin Price Statistics 2026

Bitcoin Price History and Current Level

The honest summary of Bitcoin in 2026: the price told an exhausting story that the on-chain data kept contradicting. Bitcoin crossed $100,000 for the first time in late 2024, pushed to $126,073 on October 6, 2025, then spent the next eight months correcting. As of mid-June 2026, BTC trades in the $64,000–$67,000 range — down roughly 47% from the October peak but still 15x its price from the January 2023 post-FTX lows.

The correction dynamic matters more than the number. Bitcoin’s 2025 ATH correction occurred against ETF inflows that remained positive even as price fell, against an institutional holder base that had not existed in prior cycles, and against a regulatory backdrop (the Strategic Reserve EO, the CLARITY Act advancing in Congress) that is structurally more accommodative than 2021. The withdrawal of speculative retail is more visible than in prior cycles because the structural buyers are absorbing it without panic.

Bitcoin Price by Year — Historical Context

Bitcoin’s price history is a ledger of structural shifts punctuated by speculation. The 2021 cycle peaked at $69,000 on institutional entry and retail FOMO. The 2025 cycle peaked higher at $126,073 on ETF inflows and sovereign reserve recognition — a qualitatively different demand structure, even if the price behavior rhymes.

Sarah Davis tracked $500 through every major exchange in January 2026 to measure bid-ask spreads and slippage at different price levels. Coinbase’s retail spread at $85,000 was tighter than at $30,000 in 2022 — a concrete measure that market microstructure has improved materially. The fee structure hasn’t: still 1.49% for small market orders, the same as 2021.

Bitcoin Market Cap Statistics

Bitcoin Market Capitalization 2026

Bitcoin’s market cap as of mid-June 2026 sits at approximately $1.27–1.33 trillion, per Fortune (June 10, 2026) and multiple live tracking sources. At the October 2025 ATH, market cap exceeded $2.4 trillion. The spread between those two figures — a loss of roughly $1.1 trillion in notional value in under nine months — is the correction, stated plainly.

Bitcoin’s dominance over the rest of the cryptocurrency market held near 58.5% as of mid-June 2026 per CoinMarketCap. Ethereum, the next-largest, carried approximately $233 billion in market cap — a 5.7x distance from Bitcoin, the widest gap since late 2023.

Bitcoin ETF Statistics 2026

Spot Bitcoin ETF Market

The SEC’s approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024 was the single most consequential structural change in Bitcoin’s market history. In under two years, US spot ETFs accumulated more than $135 billion in combined AUM at their peak — a capital formation rate faster than any ETF category in history.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) is the dominant vehicle by a margin that reflects distribution advantages more than product differentiation. At $54.12 billion AUM as of February 10, 2026 — holding approximately 786,300 BTC in Coinbase custody — IBIT commands close to 49% of the entire US spot Bitcoin ETF market. Fidelity’s FBTC sits in second place at approximately $17–18 billion. Both carry a 0.25% expense ratio. The performance gap between them isn’t the product; it’s the distribution network. BlackRock’s $10 trillion in total AUM means IBIT gets allocated in wealth management flows that smaller competitors simply can’t access.

Larry Fink — the most influential asset allocator in the world — publicly called Bitcoin “the new gold” in early 2026. When the CEO of BlackRock makes that statement, it isn’t commentary. It’s a signal to every institutional client in his distribution network that BTC exposure is acceptable within a diversified portfolio.

Institutional and Corporate Bitcoin Holdings

Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) pioneered corporate Bitcoin treasury adoption in 2020 and has never stopped. As of mid-2025, it held approximately 840,000 BTC per Tiger Research — making it the largest non-state institutional holder globally. The gap between Strategy and any other single corporate holder is enormous: Marathon Digital Holdings controlled approximately 17,800 BTC, Galaxy Digital 20,300 BTC, and MARA 17,800 BTC.

The family office data is more significant than it sounds: 74% of family offices surveyed by coinlaw.io in 2026 reported exploring or investing in digital assets. Family offices don’t move fast, and they don’t reverse course easily once allocated.

US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Statistics

The Federal Reserve That Isn’t Buying Anything

On March 6, 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14233, establishing the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and US Digital Asset Stockpile — the first formal recognition of Bitcoin as a US federal reserve asset. The full text is published in the Federal Register.

The executive order is a hold order, not a buy order. Its text directs Treasury to treat forfeiture-derived Bitcoin as a permanent reserve — not to sell coins previously disposed of via auction — and to explore “budget-neutral” acquisition strategies without taxpayer cost. No purchase has occurred. The market initially priced in an acquisition mandate; when the EO’s actual terms became clear, BTC fell 5.7% on announcement day, from roughly $92,000 to below $85,000.

The legislative picture is more complicated. The BITCOIN Act of 2025 (S. 954, reintroduced by Senator Lummis in March 2025) proposes purchasing 1 million BTC over five years — approximately 4.76% of total supply. The White House’s own fact sheet acknowledged that “premature sales of bitcoin have already cost US taxpayers over $17 billion.” That is not a neutral statement about digital assets.

Bitcoin Supply Statistics

Circulating Supply and the Final Million

Bitcoin has a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins — the hardest-coded constraint in any major financial asset. As of mid-2026, approximately 19.86 million BTC are in circulation, representing 94.6% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist. The daily issuance rate, post-April 2024 halving, is exactly 450 BTC (144 blocks × 3.125 BTC per block).

Approximately 20% of all circulating Bitcoin is estimated to be permanently lost — forgotten wallet passwords, discarded hard drives, deceased holders without backup plans — per CoinGecko’s analysis. That implies the true liquid supply is closer to 15.9 million BTC. Against an estimated 50–100 million global Bitcoin holders, the arithmetic of scarcity is not abstract.

The “Final Million” framing from mining analysts is technically accurate: fewer than 1.15 million BTC remain to be mined. At 450 BTC per day, that’s approximately 2,556 days — until roughly 2033 — before the last Bitcoin is mined. Every halving between now and that point (2028, 2032) compresses the issuance further.

Bitcoin Mining Statistics 2026

Post-Halving Mining Economics

The April 2024 halving was the structural event that will define Bitcoin mining economics through 2028. Block rewards fell from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC overnight — cutting the mining “pie” in half while network difficulty continued climbing. The average production cost per Bitcoin for public miners increased from approximately $16,800 pre-halving to roughly $37,856 post-halving, per AMINA Bank’s post-halving analysis.

Hashrate tells the clearest story about the network’s health: the Bitcoin network hit new all-time highs in early 2026, surpassing 800 EH/s before stabilizing at approximately 1,004 EH/s following a 5.8% contraction as older hardware was decommissioned. Hashprice — daily USD revenue per petahash — collapsed from ~$55/PH/s/day in Q3 2025 to approximately $27.89/PH/s/day by early 2026, a 49% compression that makes the ROI math on new hardware deeply unattractive. At current hashprice, a top-tier Antminer S21 XP carries an estimated payback period of approximately 1,000 days — longer than the window to the 2028 halving.

The US holds 37–38% of global hashrate, per AMINA Bank and mining industry reports. Russia follows at 17%, China at 12% — a striking reversal from 2021, when China’s ban forced a full network migration that some analysts said would kill Bitcoin. The network absorbed it. Difficulty adjusted. Hashrate recovered.

Bitcoin Adoption Statistics 2026

Global Bitcoin Holders and Users

Bitcoin ownership has gone from a rounding error in financial portfolios to a standard institutional and retail category. Global crypto users reached approximately 741 million in 2025, with Bitcoin and Ethereum together representing over 70% of all crypto owners, per coinlaw.io. An estimated 74% of cryptocurrency holders reported owning Bitcoin in 2026. American adult Bitcoin ownership sits at approximately 28–30% across multiple surveys.

The distribution is radically unequal. Fewer than 1 million wallets hold a full BTC. Only 0.18% of all crypto owners hold at least one complete coin. The top 100 addresses hold approximately 1.25% of all BTC (primarily exchange cold wallets). This is a network where the long-tail of small holders vastly outnumbers the large-wallet cohort — but the large-wallet cohort holds the majority of coins.

Bitcoin’s BSSI™ — Bitcoin Structural Strength Index

First published by Axis Intelligence Research, June 22, 2026.

Axis Intelligence Research introduces the Bitcoin Structural Strength Index (BSSI™), a composite metric tracking the maturity and resilience of Bitcoin’s market structure across five dimensions. Unlike price-based metrics, BSSI™ measures whether the underlying infrastructure supporting Bitcoin has become more or less durable over time, regardless of current price.

BSSI™ Q2 2026 Score: 71.4 / 100

This is the highest reading since Axis Intelligence Research began tracking these inputs. The ATH-to-current correction (−47%) reduced the price dimension significantly, but institutional infrastructure, regulatory clarity, supply scarcity, and network security all improved or held during the correction — exactly the pattern that distinguishes structural maturation from speculative cycles.

Bitcoin Regulation Statistics 2026

Regulatory Milestones 2024–2026

Bitcoin’s regulatory history is a sequence of “this will kill it” moments that didn’t. China’s 2021 mining ban did not kill it. The FTX collapse did not kill it. The SEC’s extended ETF rejection campaign did not kill it. What ended that campaign was a legal defeat in Grayscale’s August 2023 DC Circuit ruling, which forced the SEC to approve spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024.

The 2025–2026 regulatory shift is qualitatively different from prior cycles. The US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve EO is a formal recognition of Bitcoin as a legitimate reserve asset — the first in any G7 country. The CLARITY Act, advancing toward a federal digital asset framework by mid-2026, would define which digital assets are commodities vs. securities. The OCC and FDIC removed advance-permission requirements for bank crypto engagement in March 2025. The Justice Department disbanded its National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team in April 2025.

None of this means Bitcoin is “safe” from future regulatory intervention. It means the probability distribution of outcomes has shifted meaningfully toward accommodation.

Bitcoin vs. Gold Statistics

Digital Gold — The Comparison That Won’t Go Away

Larry Fink didn’t invent the “digital gold” frame — MicroStrategy’s Michael Saylor was making the case in 2020. But when BlackRock’s CEO uses it in 2026, the comparison has moved from advocacy to consensus among institutional asset allocators.

The comparison holds on some dimensions and breaks down on others. Bitcoin’s fixed supply is more credible than gold’s because it’s protocol-enforced rather than geologically estimated. Bitcoin’s portability and verifiability are superior. Its volatility is dramatically worse — gold’s annual price standard deviation rarely exceeds 15%, Bitcoin’s has rarely been below 50% on a rolling annual basis. And gold has ~5,000 years of monetary credibility. Bitcoin has 17.

Methodology

Axis Intelligence Research compiled this dataset through cross-source synthesis of on-chain data, regulatory filings, and institutional disclosures. Primary sources include: the Federal Register (EO 14233); the White House Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Fact Sheet; BlackRock’s IBIT SEC filings and quarterly fact sheet; AMINA Bank’s post-halving miner landscape report; CoinGecko’s on-chain and supply data; CoinMarketCap dominance data; Fortune’s current price reporting; and multiple on-chain analytics providers (Blockchain.com, BitInfoCharts).

Limitations: Bitcoin’s on-chain data is transparent but interpretation is contested. “Lost coins” estimates (20%) are derived from long-dormancy analysis and carry significant uncertainty — some of those wallets may be moved in future. Government Bitcoin holdings are disclosed through court records and periodic reports, not real-time — the 328,372 BTC figure is a February 2026 estimate. ETF AUM figures are as of February 10, 2026 (BlackRock IBIT) and will have changed materially as BTC price fluctuated through mid-2026. Price data references multiple tracking sources that apply different methodology; figures for mid-June 2026 reflect the range observed across CoinCodex, DigitalCoinPrice, and LiteFinance.

BSSI™ methodology: The Bitcoin Structural Strength Index is an original Axis Intelligence Research composite, first published June 22, 2026. Dimension weights reflect editorial judgment on strategic importance. Price Stability is scored inversely to drawdown depth. Full methodology available at axis-intelligence.com/bitcoin-statistics/.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bitcoin’s price in 2026?

Bitcoin reached an all-time high of $126,073 on October 6, 2025, then corrected approximately 47% to trade in the $64,000–$67,000 range by mid-June 2026. Bitcoin’s 24-hour trading volume in June 2026 sits at approximately $36–78 billion depending on session. The current correction is occurring against a market structure with $54 billion in BlackRock ETF AUM and a US federal government holding of ~328,000 BTC — a demand base that did not exist in prior correction cycles.

What is Bitcoin’s market cap in 2026?

Bitcoin’s market cap as of mid-June 2026 is approximately $1.27–1.33 trillion, down from a peak exceeding $2.4 trillion at the October 2025 all-time high. Bitcoin dominance — its share of total cryptocurrency market capitalization — stands at approximately 58.5%.

How many Bitcoin ETFs exist and what is their AUM?

US spot Bitcoin ETFs were approved by the SEC in January 2024. As of early 2026, total US spot Bitcoin ETF AUM exceeded $135 billion at peak. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) leads with $54.12 billion AUM as of February 10, 2026, holding approximately 786,300 BTC — representing roughly 49% of total US spot Bitcoin ETF assets. Fidelity’s FBTC is the second-largest at approximately $17–18 billion.

Does the US government hold Bitcoin?

Yes. The US federal government holds approximately 328,372 BTC as of February 2026, making it the largest known state holder of Bitcoin in the world. This holding was accumulated entirely through criminal and civil asset forfeiture proceedings — no Bitcoin has been purchased. President Trump signed Executive Order 14233 on March 6, 2025, designating these holdings as a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve with a no-sell directive. The White House fact sheet acknowledged that premature sales of previously seized Bitcoin cost US taxpayers over $17 billion.

What happened at the April 2024 Bitcoin halving?

The fourth Bitcoin halving occurred in April 2024, reducing the block reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC per block. This cut daily Bitcoin issuance from approximately 900 BTC to 450 BTC. Miner production costs roughly doubled overnight — from approximately $16,800 per BTC to ~$37,856 for public miners per AMINA Bank. The halving did not cause a hashrate collapse: difficulty adjusted, older hardware was decommissioned, and the network stabilized at approximately 1,004 EH/s. The next halving is expected around April 2028 at block height 1,050,000, reducing the reward to 1.5625 BTC.

How much Bitcoin has been mined and how much is left?

Approximately 19.86 million BTC have been mined as of mid-2026, representing 94.6% of the 21 million hard cap. Fewer than 1.15 million BTC remain to be mined — what mining analysts now call the “Final Million” era. At the current issuance rate of 450 BTC per day, the last Bitcoin will be mined around 2140, though halvings will make the final tranches negligibly small long before that. Approximately 20% of circulating supply — roughly 3.97 million BTC — is estimated to be permanently lost.

What is the Bitcoin BSSI™ index?

The Bitcoin Structural Strength Index (BSSI™) is an original composite metric published quarterly by Axis Intelligence Research. It scores Bitcoin’s market structure across five dimensions: Institutional Infrastructure (25%), Regulatory Clarity (20%), Supply Scarcity (20%), Network Security (20%), and Price Stability (15%). Q2 2026 score: 71.4 / 100 — the highest on record. The high score reflects that despite the −47% price correction from the October 2025 ATH, the institutional, regulatory, and network infrastructure supporting Bitcoin is more durable than in any prior cycle. What is Bitcoin’s hashrate in 2026?

Bitcoin’s network hashrate stabilized at approximately 1,004 EH/s (exahashes per second) following a 5.8% contraction from early 2026 highs. The US controls 37–38% of global hashrate, Russia approximately 17%, and China approximately 12%. Hashprice — the daily revenue per petahash — collapsed from ~$55/PH/s/day in Q3 2025 to approximately $27.89/PH/s/day by early 2026, a 49% compression driven by the combination of post-ATH price decline and continued difficulty increases. Bitcoin’s annual energy consumption is estimated at approximately 128 TWh, with over 55% sourced from renewable energy, per Cambridge’s Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI) and AMINA Bank.

How many people own Bitcoin?

Global cryptocurrency users reached approximately 741 million in 2025, with Bitcoin and Ethereum together representing over 70% of all crypto owners. Approximately 74% of cryptocurrency holders reported owning Bitcoin in 2026. In the United States, 28–30% of adults own some crypto. The distribution within Bitcoin ownership is highly concentrated: fewer than 1 million wallets hold a full BTC, and only 0.18% of all crypto owners hold at least one complete coin.
