Four of the twelve most-quoted ByteDance metrics rest on a document a reader can open. The rest — group revenue, net profit, valuation, AI capital expenditure, Doubao’s user base — trace back to people familiar with the matter. Axis Intelligence Research scores the company’s public statistical record at 41.6 out of 100 on the ByteDance Data Traceability Index.
Quick Answer
ByteDance is the largest private company in consumer technology by reported revenue, and the least verifiable. The figures that circulate most widely — roughly $186 billion in 2025 group revenue, a valuation between $330 billion and $550 billion — come from unnamed sources inside the company relayed through financial media. The figures that are legally mandated tell a narrower but harder story: TikTok reported 178.3 million average monthly active recipients in the EU for July–December 2025 under Article 24(2) of the Digital Services Act, and Oracle’s SEC-filed 10-Q confirms a 15% equity-method stake in TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC as of February 28, 2026. Axis Intelligence Research finds the traceability gap between those two categories is the single most important fact about ByteDance data in 2026.
Key Findings
- Axis Intelligence Research scores the ByteDance statistical record at 41.6 on the ByteDance Data Traceability Index (BDTI), a 0–100 measure of how much of a company’s most-cited data rests on filed, mandated or audited documents (snapshot: August 7, 2026).
- Only 4 of 12 headline ByteDance metrics (33.3%) are Tier A — sourced to a regulator filing, an SEC filing or a legally mandated disclosure — while 5 of 12 (41.7%) rest entirely on reporting from unnamed sources.
- TikTok’s EU reach grew from 134 million to 178.3 million average monthly active recipients between the first half of 2023 and the second half of 2025, a 33.1% increase and roughly 39.4% of the EU’s 452.0 million residents, per TikTok’s DSA transparency filings and Eurostat.
- Axis Intelligence Research estimates the implied enterprise value of TikTok’s US business at $11.7 billion to $14.7 billion, derived by grossing up Oracle’s SEC-disclosed carrying value at its filed 15% ownership stake.
- Executive Order 14352 records that ByteDance Ltd. and its affiliates retain under 20% of the US joint venture — the only ByteDance ownership percentage in existence that carries the force of a US federal document.
How Much Revenue Does ByteDance Make?
ByteDance does not file. It is incorporated in the Cayman Islands, headquartered in Beijing, and has no listed equity, which means no 10-K, no 20-F, no annual report, and no auditor’s signature on any revenue line the public has ever seen. Every group revenue figure in circulation is a number a journalist was told.
What that number has been, consistently, across outlets: approximately $155 billion for 2024, growing around 20% to approximately $186 billion for 2025. Bloomberg carried the 2025 target; The Information and eMarketer relayed it; Sacra and Contrary Research have both published it as their working estimate. The figure is plausible, widely repeated, and completely unverifiable — which is a different property than being wrong.
The comparison that made it famous is checkable on one side. Meta Platforms reported $47.516 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2025 in its SEC-filed results. Reporting placed ByteDance at roughly $48 billion for the same quarter, and the “ByteDance overtakes Meta” headline followed. The overtaking may well have happened. But one side of that comparison is an audited public filing and the other is a leak, and the two do not belong on the same axis without a label.
For 2026, the checkable side has moved sharply. Meta reported $60.801 billion in Q2 2026 revenue, up 28% year over year, and $117.111 billion for the first half — 30.4% growth. Meta’s Family of Apps segment carried $60.370 billion of the quarterly total, with advertising alone at $59.363 billion. No equivalent 2026 ByteDance figure has surfaced from any source, named or otherwise, at the time of this snapshot.
| Metric | Value | As of | Source | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ByteDance group revenue | ~$155B | FY2024 | Reported, unnamed sources | D |
| ByteDance group revenue | ~$186B | FY2025 | Reported, unnamed sources | D |
| ByteDance net profit | ~$33B | FY2024 | Reported, unnamed sources | D |
| Meta total revenue | $47,516M | Q2 2025 | Meta Platforms, SEC Form 8-K exhibit | A |
| Meta total revenue | $60,801M | Q2 2026 | Meta Platforms, SEC Form 8-K exhibit | A |

| Meta Family of Apps revenue | $60,370M | Q2 2026 | Meta Platforms, SEC Form 8-K exhibit | A |
Meta’s figures are drawn directly from the second quarter 2026 results exhibit filed with the SEC on July 29, 2026.
Mia Scarlett: The 2025 profit story is the tell. Reporting in December put ByteDance on track for roughly $50 billion in net income after about $40 billion through three quarters. By mid-2026 the same reporting channel had revised full-year profit down by more than 70%, attributing the collapse to a back-half surge in AI spending. Both numbers came from the same kind of source. A public company revising profit by that magnitude files an 8-K and takes questions for an hour. ByteDance revised by press cycle, and nobody could ask what moved — capitalised versus expensed compute, a one-off write-down, or a change in what “profit” was being measured against. That is not a criticism of the reporters. It is a description of what a number is worth when there is no filing behind it.
What Is ByteDance Worth in 2026?
Valuation for a private company with no market is whatever the last transaction says, and ByteDance has had several, each producing a different headline.
The sequence, as reported: an employee share buyback at $189.90 per share in March 2025, implying roughly $312–315 billion; a follow-on buyback at $200.41 per share in August 2025, implying more than $330 billion; a secondary block trade in November 2025 that reportedly cleared at a $480 billion implied valuation; and a General Atlantic stake marketing exercise in February 2026 at approximately $550 billion.
Every one of those figures is Tier D. Buyback prices are set internally. Secondary auctions are private. A stake being marketed at $550 billion is a seller’s ask, not a clearing price, and the distinction between the two is where most private-market valuation reporting goes wrong.
There is exactly one ByteDance-adjacent valuation input in 2026 that sits inside an audited filing, and it concerns the US business only.
Deriving TikTok US enterprise value from Oracle’s filing
Oracle’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended February 28, 2026 states that non-marketable debt investments and equity securities totalled $2.2 billion, that the substantial majority of that balance was TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, and that Oracle holds an ownership interest of 15% in the joint venture as an equity-method investee.
Axis Intelligence Research grosses that up:
Implied 100% value = (Oracle non-marketable balance × TikTok share of balance) ÷ 0.15
Low : ($2.20B × 0.80) ÷ 0.15 = $11.7B
Mid : ($2.20B × 0.90) ÷ 0.15 = $13.2B
High : ($2.20B × 1.00) ÷ 0.15 = $14.7B
Because Oracle says “substantial majority” rather than naming a figure, the calculation is bounded rather than pointed: $11.7 billion to $14.7 billion, midpoint $13.2 billion. Equity-method carrying value tracks cost plus share of earnings, not fair value, so this is a floor-anchored estimate of what Oracle paid and has since absorbed — not a mark.
The band brackets the roughly $14 billion figure Vice President JD Vance stated publicly in September 2025 when the framework agreement was announced. Two independent routes to the same neighbourhood is the closest thing to verification that exists anywhere in the ByteDance numbers. The full 10-Q is filed on EDGAR.

Who Owns TikTok After the US Restructuring?
This is the one part of the ByteDance corporate structure that is documented to federal-register standard, because a statute forced it there.
The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (Public Law 118–50, Div. H) required divestiture or prohibition. After four enforcement delays — Executive Orders 14166, 14258, 14310 and 14350 — Executive Order 14352, “Saving TikTok While Protecting National Security,” was signed September 25, 2025 and published in the Federal Register on September 30, 2025. The order records that TikTok’s US application would be operated by a newly established US joint venture, that ByteDance Ltd. and its affiliates would own less than 20% of that entity, and that the qualified divestiture places the operation of the recommendation algorithms and content-moderation decisions under the joint venture’s control. The full order is public.
The entity that resulted, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, closed on January 22, 2026. Oracle’s SEC filing independently confirms its own 15% and the equity-method treatment. Silver Lake and MGX each hold 15% on the same terms; ByteDance retains 19.9%, with existing ByteDance investors holding the balance.
| Holder | Stake | Documentary basis | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oracle Corporation | 15% | Oracle Form 10-Q, Feb 28, 2026 (SEC) | A |
| ByteDance Ltd. and affiliates | <20% | Executive Order 14352 (Federal Register) | A |
| Silver Lake | 15% | Reported; not independently filed | C |
| MGX | 15% | Reported; not independently filed | C |
| Existing ByteDance investors | ~30% | Reported; not independently filed | C |
Mia Scarlett: Note the asymmetry in that table. The two stakes we can prove are the two held by entities with a filing obligation — a US-listed company and the US federal government. Silver Lake and MGX are private; nothing compels them to say a word, and they haven’t. This is the general shape of ByteDance data: visibility is a function of who else is in the room, not of the company’s own disclosure posture. Every reliable ByteDance number in 2026 exists because a regulator or a counterparty was required to write it down.
How Many Users Does TikTok Have in Europe?
The EU produces the only audited-grade reach series that exists for any ByteDance property anywhere in the world. Article 24(2) of the Digital Services Act obliges very large online platforms to publish average monthly active recipients twice a year. TikTok Technology Limited has now filed six of them.
| Period | EU average monthly active recipients | Source | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| H1 2023 | 134,000,000 | TikTok DSA Transparency Report | A |
| H2 2023 | 142,000,000 | TikTok DSA Transparency Report | A |
| H1 2024 | 148,813,032 | TikTok DSA Transparency Report | A |
| H2 2024 | 157,632,063 | TikTok DSA Transparency Report | A |
| H1 2025 | 169,527,678 | TikTok DSA Transparency Report | A |
| H2 2025 | 178,300,000 | TikTok DSA Transparency Report | A |
Axis Intelligence Research calculates from this series:
- +44.3 million recipients added since the first mandated filing
- +33.1% total growth across five reporting periods
- +5.88% compound growth per six-month period
- +13.1% year over year, comparing H2 2025 with H2 2024
- 39.4% of the EU population, using Eurostat’s 452.0 million estimate for January 1, 2026
The largest national bases in the latest filing are France (29.1M), Germany (27.3M), Italy (25.2M) and Spain (25.0M). Growth since the first tracked period is fastest in the smaller markets — Cyprus, Malta and Bulgaria each up more than 40% — which is what late-stage penetration looks like when the large markets approach saturation.
Two caveats belong on this series and nowhere else. TikTok states the calculation is produced for DSA compliance and should not be relied on for other purposes, and platforms revise their counting methodology between periods. Separately, in mid-2026 the EU General Court annulled the Commission’s 2023 supervisory-fee decisions for Facebook, Instagram and TikTok on the grounds that the methodology for estimating active recipients should have been set by delegated act. The obligation to file was not questioned; the methodology’s legal footing was. Read the series as the best-documented reach data in existence rather than as a fixed ruler.
The regulatory file continues to move. On February 6, 2026 the European Commission preliminarily found TikTok in breach of the DSA over addictive design — infinite scroll, autoplay and push notifications — indicating the platform must change basic product design rather than add an optional control. Preliminary findings are not final decisions. TikTok also reported removing roughly 112 million pieces of content in the EU between July and December 2025 in its sixth DSA transparency report, the first to include comment-level enforcement volumes.
What Are the Real Douyin and China Numbers?
Douyin is the larger business by most reconstructions and the more opaque by every measure. There is no Chinese analogue to Article 24(2); no regulator compels a platform-level user disclosure. The circulating 750 million-plus daily active users figure is a company statement from 2024 that has been reprinted continuously since without a refresh.
What is measurable comes from the China Internet Network Information Center, whose semi-annual reports are the country’s authoritative internet statistics series. The 57th Statistical Report on Internet Development in China, released February 5, 2026, put China’s internet population at 1.125 billion as of December 2025, with penetration above 80%, and digital-economy core industries at 10.5% of GDP. The same report recorded 602 million generative AI users in China, up 141.7% year over year.
That last figure is the ceiling that matters for ByteDance’s AI unit. Doubao’s widely cited base of roughly 150 million monthly users as of mid-2025 is a Tier D number, but it sits inside a Tier A denominator that quadrupled the addressable population in twelve months. The denominator is the useful half.
| Metric | Value | As of | Source | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| China internet users | 1,125,000,000 | Dec 2025 | CNNIC, 57th Statistical Report | A |
| China internet penetration | >80% | Dec 2025 | CNNIC, 57th Statistical Report | A |
| China generative AI users | 602,000,000 | Dec 2025 | CNNIC, 57th Statistical Report | A |
| Generative AI user growth | +141.7% | Dec 2025 vs Dec 2024 | CNNIC, 57th Statistical Report | A |
| Douyin daily active users | ~750,000,000 | 2024 | Company statement, reprinted | C |
| Doubao monthly active users | ~150,000,000 | Mid-2025 | Reported, unnamed sources | D |
The ByteDance Data Traceability Index (BDTI)
What it measures
BDTI — the ByteDance Data Traceability Index — is an Axis Intelligence Research metric scoring, on a 0–100 scale, how much of a company’s most-cited statistical record rests on documents a third party can open and check. It is not a measure of whether a number is true. It is a measure of whether anyone outside the company could ever establish that it is.
Method
Twelve metrics were selected on the basis of citation frequency: these are the ByteDance figures that recur across financial media, research notes and reference pages. Each is graded on the strongest documentary basis available as of the snapshot date.
| Tier | Definition | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A | Legally mandated, regulator-filed, SEC-filed or audited disclosure | 100 |
| B | Company self-published without legal compulsion (newsroom, official blog) | 67 |
| C | Named research organisation or named official with disclosed methodology | 33 |
| D | Reported from unnamed sources; no methodology available | 0 |
BDTI = Σ(tier points) ÷ number of metrics
= 499 ÷ 12
= 41.6
The scored set — snapshot August 7, 2026
| # | Metric | Tier | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Group revenue FY2025 | D | 0 |
| 2 | Group net profit FY2025 | D | 0 |
| 3 | Implied group valuation | D | 0 |
| 4 | 2026 AI capital expenditure | D | 0 |
| 5 | Doubao monthly active users | D | 0 |
| 6 | TikTok global monthly active users | C | 33 |
| 7 | Douyin daily active users | C | 33 |
| 8 | TikTok Shop global GMV | C | 33 |
| 9 | TikTok EU average monthly active recipients | A | 100 |
| 10 | TikTok EU content removals, H2 2025 | A | 100 |
| 11 | ByteDance retained stake in TikTok US JV | A | 100 |
| 12 | Oracle stake and carrying value in TikTok US JV | A | 100 |
| Total | 499 | ||
| BDTI | 41.6 |
Distribution: Tier A 33.3% · Tier B 0.0% · Tier C 25.0% · Tier D 41.7%.
The zero in Tier B is the finding a reader should carry away. ByteDance publishes essentially nothing about itself voluntarily. Every documented figure in the set was produced under compulsion — the DSA, a US executive order, or a counterparty’s SEC obligation — and everything financial sits at zero.
What would move the score
A ByteDance-published annual report, an IPO prospectus, or a China-side platform disclosure mandate would each move BDTI materially. A single additional Tier A metric adds roughly 8.3 points at this sample size. Conversely, the score falls if a currently mandated disclosure is weakened — which is why the General Court’s ruling on the DSA active-recipient methodology is worth tracking. Axis Intelligence Research will restate BDTI when any of the twelve metrics changes tier.
Mia Scarlett: A credit analyst reading this company would not write a rating. There is no cash-conversion picture, no segment revenue, no operating margin trend, no revenue-per-employee series and no guidance to measure against. What there is instead is a reach series filed under European law and a 15% carrying value on an American balance sheet — two accidental windows cut by other people’s obligations. That is enough to size the US business and to trend European reach. It is not enough to underwrite anything, and the gap between “ByteDance is worth $550 billion” and “we can document $2.2 billion of it” is the whole story of covering this company in 2026.
Methodology
Collection. Every figure in this article was retrieved from a source document during production on August 7, 2026, and logged in the accompanying CSV with its URL and retrieval date. Documents fetched directly: Meta Platforms’ Q2 2026 results exhibit as filed with the SEC; Oracle Corporation’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended February 28, 2026; Executive Order 14352 as published in the Federal Register; the European Commission’s February 6, 2026 press release on TikTok’s addictive design; Eurostat’s population and population change statistics; and the CNNIC 57th Statistical Report summary.
TikTok DSA series. TikTok’s transparency portal blocks automated retrieval. The six-period series was taken from a transparency monitor that reproduces the filings with per-period attribution, and the figures were cross-checked against the Commission’s designation record and contemporaneous reporting of the first filing (125 million for August 2022–January 2023, 134 million for February–July 2023). The originating document is TikTok’s DSA Transparency Report.
Tier grading. Grading reflects the strongest documentary basis available on the snapshot date, not the plausibility of the figure. A widely believed number with no retrievable document grades D. Where a figure derives from a named official’s public statement rather than a filing — the $14 billion US valuation — it is used as a cross-check only and excluded from the scored set.
Calculations. All arithmetic was independently recomputed before publication. The implied TikTok US enterprise value is bounded rather than pointed because Oracle discloses “substantial majority” rather than a line-item amount; the 80%–100% band is Axis Intelligence Research’s stated assumption and is disclosed here so any reader can substitute their own. Equity-method carrying value is not a fair-value mark, and the derived range should be read as anchored to Oracle’s cost basis plus accumulated share of earnings.
Exclusions. Figures that could not be traced to a retrievable document during the session were excluded from prose rather than approximated. This includes any 2026 ByteDance group revenue figure, for which no source of any tier was located.
Currency. All values in US dollars as reported by their sources. Chinese-yuan figures cited by others are reproduced with the source’s own conversion rather than reconverted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ByteDance file financial statements anywhere?
No. ByteDance Ltd. is a Cayman Islands entity with no listed equity, so it files no 10-K, 20-F, 8-K or equivalent in any jurisdiction where a reader could retrieve it. The nearest thing to a ByteDance financial disclosure available in 2026 is a counterparty’s: Oracle’s Form 10-Q discloses a 15% equity-method interest in TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC and the carrying value of its non-marketable investments.
Why do ByteDance revenue figures never come with a source document?
Because there isn’t one. Group revenue and profit figures reach the public through reporters briefed by people inside or close to the company, typically ahead of internal all-hands meetings. That channel has been directionally consistent for several years, which is why the numbers are widely reused, but it produces no artifact — no filing, no auditor, no methodology note, and no mechanism for asking what changed when a figure is later revised.
Is ByteDance actually bigger than Meta by revenue?
On the reported figures, ByteDance’s approximately $186 billion for 2025 sits close to Meta’s scale, and quarterly comparisons in 2025 put the two within a couple of billion dollars. The problem is that only one side is auditable. Meta’s Q2 2026 revenue of $60.801 billion is an SEC-filed number; no 2026 ByteDance quarterly figure has surfaced at all. Treat the comparison as directional, and never place the two figures in the same chart without labelling which one is filed.
What is the difference between the $330 billion and $550 billion ByteDance valuations?
They measure different transactions at different dates. The $330 billion derives from the internal employee share buyback price of $200.41 announced in August 2025 — a price the company sets. The roughly $550 billion figure comes from a stake being marketed by an early investor in February 2026, which is an asking price rather than a completed clearing price. The $480 billion figure between them reflects a reported November 2025 secondary block trade. None is a public market capitalisation, and none is independently verifiable.
How much of TikTok does ByteDance still own after the US deal?
Executive Order 14352 records that ByteDance Ltd. and its affiliates hold less than 20% of the US joint venture — reported as 19.9% — with American and global investors holding 80.1%. This applies only to TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, the entity operating the US application. ByteDance’s ownership of TikTok outside the United States, and of Douyin, is unchanged by the order.
Why is TikTok’s European user data more reliable than its global figure?
Article 24(2) of the EU Digital Services Act legally compels very large online platforms to publish average monthly active recipients every six months. Nothing compels a global figure anywhere. The circulating 1.9 billion global monthly user count comes from analytics firms modelling app-level data, which is a legitimate method with real error bars; the 178.3 million EU figure is a filing the platform is obliged to stand behind.
What does a BDTI score of 41.6 actually tell a researcher?
It tells you what proportion of the figures you are about to cite can be checked. At 41.6, slightly more than half the weight of ByteDance’s public statistical record sits below the level a fact-checker could verify, and every financial metric in the set scores zero. In practice: cite the EU reach series, the ownership structure and the Oracle carrying value directly; attribute revenue, profit and valuation to the reporting channel rather than to ByteDance.
Is Douyin bigger than TikTok?
By most reconstructions Douyin generates more revenue than TikTok, since China remains ByteDance’s largest revenue market, and its e-commerce GMV is an order of magnitude larger than TikTok Shop’s. But there is no mandated Chinese disclosure equivalent to the DSA, so the widely reprinted 750 million-plus daily active user figure is a 2024 company statement rather than a current measurement. The comparison cannot be made on documented data.
What would have to change for ByteDance data to become reliable?
An IPO. A prospectus and subsequent periodic filings would move group revenue, profit, segment breakdown and valuation from Tier D to Tier A in a single step and would lift BDTI above 90. Short of that, incremental improvement depends on other jurisdictions adopting DSA-style reach mandates, or on ByteDance choosing to publish a voluntary annual report — a category in which it currently discloses nothing.
Can I reuse the figures and the index from this page?
Yes. The dataset is published under CC BY 4.0, so you may republish, chart or redistribute any of it with attribution to Axis Intelligence Research. The BDTI method is disclosed in full above so that any researcher can recompute the score from the same twelve metrics, or extend it to another company.
