Streaming services hold exclusive rights to 22 of the NFL’s 272 regular-season games in 2026 — 8.1% of the schedule, per Axis Intelligence Research’s count of league and platform schedules. Netflix’s five-game slate is up from two in 2025, and Prime Video’s Packers-Bears Wild Card (31.61M) is the most-streamed NFL game on record.

Quick Answer

Streaming-exclusive NFL games now draw broadcast-sized audiences. Netflix’s Lions-Vikings Christmas game averaged 27.5 million U.S. viewers, the most-streamed NFL regular-season game ever, and Prime Video’s 2026 Thursday Night Football opener drew 18.60 million. Axis Intelligence Research estimates that a fan needs $147.88 in streaming subscriptions this season just to reach the 22 exclusive games — $6.72 per game.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research finds that 22 of 272 NFL regular-season games in 2026 (8.1%) stream exclusively on Prime Video (16), Netflix (5) or Peacock (1).
  2. Netflix’s Lions-Vikings game on December 25, 2025 averaged 27.5 million U.S. viewers, the most-streamed NFL regular-season game in U.S. history, per Nielsen Big Data + Panel.
  3. According to Axis Intelligence Research’s Stream Parity Ratio (SPR™), Netflix’s Christmas 2025 headliner outdrew the NFL’s 2025 average game by 47% (SPR 1.471).
  4. Axis Intelligence Research estimates the Exclusive Game Access Cost (EGAC™) for the 2026 regular season at $147.88, or $6.72 per streaming-exclusive game, at list prices.
  5. Streaming accounted for 10.6% of Sunday Night Football‘s 23.5 million average audience in 2025, per Axis Intelligence Research’s calculation from NBCUniversal figures.

How Many NFL Games Are Streaming-Only in 2026?

Twenty-two. The league’s 2026 schedule gives Prime Video 16 exclusive regular-season games — 15 Thursday nights plus Black Friday — according to Amazon’s 2026 Thursday Night Football schedule release. Netflix streams five: the Week 1 game in Melbourne, the first Thanksgiving Eve game, two Christmas Day games and a Week 18 Saturday game, per the NFL’s 2026 schedule announcement. Peacock keeps one exclusive primetime game on January 2, 2027.

Netflix went from two exclusive games in 2025 to five in 2026, a 150% increase in exclusive inventory in one renewal cycle.

Alex Rivera’s read: Eight percent sounds small until you look at which eight percent. Christmas, Thanksgiving Eve, Black Friday, Week 1 overseas — the league is carving streaming windows out of tentpole dates, not dead Tuesday slots. For a household, that’s the difference between “I can skip that app” and “I’m paying for that app in late November whether I like it or not.”

What Is the Most-Streamed NFL Game Ever?

The Packers-Bears Wild Card game on Prime Video in January 2026 holds the overall record at 31.61 million average viewers, according to Amazon MGM Studios. For regular-season games, Netflix owns the top spot: Lions-Vikings on Christmas 2025 averaged 27.5 million U.S. viewers and peaked above 30 million during the halftime show, per Netflix’s Christmas Gameday release. Netflix says it has now distributed the three most-streamed regular-season NFL games in U.S. history.

The Broncos-Chiefs game set Prime Video’s regular-season record, according to ESPN’s reporting of Nielsen data.

How Many People Watch Thursday Night Football on Prime Video?

Prime Video’s 2025 Thursday Night Football season averaged 15.33 million viewers over 15 games — the most-watched season in the franchise’s 20-year history, and viewership is up 60% since Amazon’s first exclusive season in 2022, per Amazon MGM Studios.

The 2026 opener (Lions-Bills at the new Highmark Stadium) averaged 18.60 million, per Sports Media Watch’s reading of Nielsen data — 21.3% above the 2025 full-season average. Openers always run hot; the number to watch is whether the season average clears 15.33 million once the November schedule thins out.

How Many People Watched the NFL on Netflix in 2026?

Netflix’s first game of 2026, 49ers-Rams from the Melbourne Cricket Ground, averaged 18.5 million U.S. viewers and peaked at 21.3 million, per the NFL’s Nielsen Big Data + Panel release. The same release reports 4.0 million viewers aged 18-34 — the highest non-Christmas streaming delivery in that demo for a regular-season game — and 100,021 fans in the stadium.

Axis Intelligence Research calculates that 18-to-34-year-olds made up 21.6% of the Melbourne game’s U.S. audience (4.0M ÷ 18.5M).

Why we don’t publish a single “global” Netflix NFL number

Netflix reports two different audiences for the same game. The Melbourne game drew 18.5 million in the U.S. (Nielsen, live + same day) and 21.7 million globally (NFL-reported). Christmas Lions-Vikings: 27.5 million U.S. (Nielsen) versus 30.5 million global (Netflix Live + 1 first-party data). The global figures include a day of delayed viewing and come from a different measurement system, so Axis Intelligence Research does not subtract one from the other to derive an “international audience.” The two are shown side by side; the gap between them is not a clean count of non-U.S. fans.

Alex Rivera’s read: The 18-34 number is the one Netflix actually paid for. That audience is the hardest to reach on a broadcast network, and a morning-in-Australia, primetime-in-America game found four million of them on a Thursday in September. That’s the renewal math in one line.

How Do Streaming NFL Games Compare With TV? The Stream Parity Ratio (SPR™)

Raw audience numbers invite apples-to-oranges debate — a Christmas game isn’t a Week 7 Thursday. To put streaming games on one scale, Axis Intelligence Research built the Stream Parity Ratio (SPR™):

SPR = average U.S. audience of a streaming game or package ÷ 18.7 million

The denominator is the NFL’s 2025 regular-season average per game across all windows (18.7 million, the second-highest on record, as reported by TV Tech from league data). An SPR of 1.00 means a streaming game performs exactly like the league’s average telecast. Above 1.00, it beats it.

Formula: audience ÷ 18.7M. Postseason games are excluded because the regular-season average is the wrong benchmark for them. All SPR readings as of September 28, 2026.

What the SPR shows: event streaming games (Christmas) now clear the league average outright, the 2026 openers land within about 1% of it, and a full TNF season — which absorbs the weak November matchups every package gets — sits at roughly 82% of an average NFL telecast. That 0.820 is the most honest single number for “how big is a streaming-only NFL package.”

Alex Rivera’s read: A 0.99 for a game that kicked off at 8:35 p.m. Eastern from the other side of the planet is the real result here. Two years ago the question was whether a paywall cost a game a third of its audience. The SPR says the paywall discount on a marquee matchup is now close to zero. The discount shows up on the weak games, which is why the season average still sits at 0.82.

How Much of the NFL Audience Actually Streams?

Even on “TV” games, streaming is a real slice. NBCUniversal reports that Sunday Night Football‘s 2025 streaming average minute audience hit a record 2.5 million across Peacock, NBC Sports digital and NFL digital, up 17% from 2.2 million — out of a record 23.5 million total, per NBCUniversal’s season release. Axis Intelligence Research calculates streaming’s share of the SNF audience at 10.6% (2.5 ÷ 23.5).

Super Bowl LX averaged 125.6 million viewers across NBC, Peacock, Telemundo, NBC Sports Digital and NFL+, with a record 137.8 million peak, per NBC Sports. NBCUniversal did not break out Peacock’s share, saying only that it was Peacock’s best day ever by reach and hours streamed — so no Peacock Super Bowl figure appears in this dataset.

Streaming’s share of all U.S. TV time

Nielsen’s May 2026 Gauge put streaming at 48.6% of total TV watch time, with Prime Video at a platform-best 4.5%, YouTube at 13.8% and Netflix at 8.0%, per Nielsen. Nielsen notes the Gauge does not yet reflect its enhanced currency ratings, so these shares are not directly comparable to the game audiences above. How Much Does It Cost to Stream Every NFL Game in 2026? The Exclusive Game Access Cost (EGAC™)

The Exclusive Game Access Cost (EGAC™) is Axis Intelligence Research’s measure of what a U.S. fan pays, at list price, to reach every streaming-exclusive regular-season game.

EGAC = (Netflix Standard with ads + Amazon Prime monthly + Peacock Premium) × 4 billing months

The window runs September 10, 2026 (Melbourne) to January 9, 2027 (Week 18 Saturday) — four monthly cycles.

Peacock’s August 18 increase — $10.99 to $12.99, an 18.2% jump — landed three weeks before kickoff.

The completist’s bill

Add live TV for CBS, FOX, NBC, ABC and ESPN, plus out-of-market Sunday games, and the number grows fast. Using YouTube TV’s $82.99 base plan and the 2026 NFL Sunday Ticket prices published by YouTube ($378 for returning YouTube TV customers, $240 for new users, $480 standalone), Axis Intelligence Research estimates:

Fan profileYouTube TV (4 mo.)Sunday TicketEGAC™Total
Returning Sunday Ticket customer$331.96$378$147.88$857.84
New Sunday Ticket customer$331.96$240$147.88$719.84

List prices, excluding taxes, RedZone, bundle discounts and promotions; as of September 28, 2026.

Alex Rivera’s read: $6.72 a game is cheap next to a stadium hot dog. The problem isn’t any single app — it’s that the NFL now spreads its season across three streaming bills on top of whatever live-TV service you already pay for. Loyal Sunday Ticket customers pay $138 more than new ones for the identical package. If you’re returning, it is worth checking whether the new-user offer surfaces when you cancel auto-renew.

Is NFL Viewership Down in 2026?

Week 1 of 2026 averaged 19.5 million viewers per game, down 13% from the record 22.3 million in 2025, according to Sports Video Group’s Nielsen roundup. The drop comes with context: this year’s Week 1 had competing Sunday-afternoon national windows on CBS and FOX, which splits the audience, and it included the Netflix Melbourne game in the average. Nielsen also adjusted its Big Data + Panel methodology for the 2026-27 season, which makes every year-over-year comparison noisier than usual.

Alex Rivera’s read: I wouldn’t read a trend into one week that added two games and split a national window. The streaming numbers inside that week — 18.5M on Netflix, 18.6M on Prime a week later — held up fine. Check back after Christmas.

Methodology

Collection. Axis Intelligence Research compiled audience, schedule and price data between September 27 and 28, 2026 from platform and league releases (NFL, Netflix, Amazon MGM Studios, NBCUniversal, NBC Sports, YouTube, Peacock, Nielsen). Where a primary release was unavailable, trade reporting of Nielsen data (ESPN, Sports Media Watch, Sports Video Group, TV Tech) is used, named in plain text and flagged is_primary = no in the CSV.

Audience definitions. U.S. figures are average-minute audiences from Nielsen Big Data + Panel, live + same day, including out-of-home and local over-the-air simulcasts where the release says so. Global figures are platform-reported and kept separate.

SPR™. Game or package average U.S. audience ÷ 18.7 million (NFL 2025 regular-season average per game). Postseason excluded.

EGAC™. Sum of monthly list prices for the three platforms with exclusive regular-season games × 4 monthly cycles covering September 10, 2026 to January 9, 2027. Prime Video’s Wild Card game falls outside the window and is not counted.

Exclusive-game count. Regular-season games carried only by a streaming service nationally (local-market over-the-air simulcasts don’t change exclusivity). Wild Card and other postseason games are excluded.

Scope. Audience data covers games reported by September 28, 2026. Netflix’s 2025 total in the platform table counts only its two Christmas games. YouTube’s 2025 Brazil game is excluded because its measurement was revised after release and the league left it out of its season average.

NFL Streaming FAQ

Do I need a separate subscription to watch Thursday Night Football?

Yes, outside the two teams’ home markets. Thursday Night Football is a Prime membership benefit ($14.99 a month or $139 a year); fans in the two home markets can watch on a local over-the-air station, and NFL+ carries it on phones and tablets.

Which NFL games are on Netflix in 2026?

Five: 49ers-Rams in Melbourne (Sept. 10, already played, 18.5M U.S. viewers), Packers at Rams on Thanksgiving Eve (Nov. 25), Packers at Bears and Bills at Broncos on Christmas Day, and a Week 18 Saturday game. All are included with any Netflix plan, from $8.99 a month with ads.

Is the Netflix Christmas game the most-watched streaming game ever?

It’s the most-streamed regular-season game: Lions-Vikings averaged 27.5 million U.S. viewers on Christmas 2025. The overall record belongs to Prime Video’s Packers-Bears Wild Card in January 2026 at 31.61 million.

Do streaming-only games lose viewers compared with CBS or FOX?

Marquee ones no longer do. By Axis Intelligence Research’s Stream Parity Ratio, Netflix’s top Christmas game scored 1.471 (47% above the league’s average game), while the 2026 Melbourne and TNF openers scored 0.989 and 0.995. The full 2025 TNF season averaged 0.820, where weaker matchups pull the number down.

What is the cheapest way to watch every streaming-exclusive NFL game?

At list prices, Netflix with ads, Amazon Prime and Peacock Premium for four months cost $147.88 — Axis Intelligence Research’s EGAC™ — or $6.72 per exclusive game. Monthly subscriptions timed to game dates can cut that further.

How much is NFL Sunday Ticket in 2026?

YouTube lists $240 for new customers, $378 for returning YouTube TV customers and $480 for returning standalone buyers. Sunday Ticket covers out-of-market Sunday afternoon games only — not Thursday, Sunday night, Monday night or streaming-exclusive games.

Does NFL streaming viewership count people watching at bars?

Nielsen’s Big Data + Panel figures used here include out-of-home viewing. Netflix’s and the NFL’s releases say U.S. averages include out-of-home, local broadcast simulcasts, NFL+ and mobile/web viewing.

Why did Week 1 NFL viewership fall 13% in 2026?

Week 1 averaged 19.5 million versus 22.3 million in 2025. The 2026 week had competing CBS and FOX national windows on Sunday afternoon and more games in the average, and Nielsen changed parts of its methodology for the new season — so the drop is not a clean measure of fan interest.
