Prices verified on October 3, 2026. Every vendor price on this page was read from the vendor’s own live pricing page or from a primary filing on that date. Professional fees come from the 2025 NATP Fee Study, the most recent nationwide practitioner survey. Download the full fact table (CSV, CC BY 4.0) at the end of the page.

How Much Do Tax Preparation Services Cost in 2026?

Quick answer: A base Form 1040 prepared by a CPA averages $280, by an enrolled agent $228, and by a non-credentialed preparer about $185, according to the 2025 NATP Fee Study. H&R Block’s assisted service starts at $89 to $99, its paid online tier at $65, and TurboTax Desktop Deluxe lists at $84. Simple returns can still be filed for $0.

The sticker price is the wrong number to compare, though. A CPA quote covers a federal return with schedules; a software price covers a license that may or may not include your state, your schedules, or the fee for paying out of your refund. So Axis Intelligence Research built one comparable unit for every channel: the Fully Loaded Return Cost (FLRC), the total you actually pay to get one specific return filed, and then the same total over three and five years.

Key Findings

  1. According to Axis Intelligence Research, an itemized return (Schedule A) has an FLRC of $333 to $341 with a CPA versus $109 in TurboTax Desktop Deluxe with state e-file, a ratio of roughly 3.1 to 1.
  2. CPAs charge 1.51 times what non-credentialed preparers charge for the same base 1040, and enrolled agents charge 1.23 times, per Axis Intelligence Research’s calculation from NATP’s 2025 credential averages.
  3. Over five years, Axis Intelligence Research estimates a CPA-prepared itemized return costs $1,767 to $2,057 cumulatively, against $545 for the DIY desktop route at today’s list price.
  4. Paid preparers still filed the majority of returns: 61.4 million of 112.2 million e-filed returns (54.7%) through April 10, 2026, per IRS filing season statistics.
  5. Ancillary products (Refund Transfer, Peace of Mind, Tax Identity Shield) generated revenue equal to 10.3% of H&R Block’s fiscal 2026 assisted tax prep revenue, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s analysis of the company’s results.

Tax Preparation Price Table: Every Vendor and Credential, Side by Side

Commercial prices are list prices read from vendor pages on October 3, 2026. Professional fees are survey averages, which is a different kind of number: a mean of what thousands of independent practices charge, not a price anyone posts. We keep the two in separate rows and never blend them (see Methodology).

Two transparency notes from the verification pass. First, H&R Block’s own filing-options page shows two different assisted starting prices on the same day: the FAQ says in-person filing starts at $89, while the full-service module says $99 plus a state fee. We publish both rather than pick one. Second, TurboTax Online’s paid tiers (Deluxe, Premium, Expert Assist, Expert Full Service) render their prices dynamically by tax situation and date, and no static list price was readable on Intuit’s page at retrieval. That is why the TurboTax rows above use Intuit’s published Desktop price list, which is static and fully disclosed.

Commentary, David Park: People ask me “how much should I pay?” as if there were one answer. There are three markets here wearing the same name. The survey numbers describe local practices pricing judgment and liability. The software numbers describe a license. And the $0 rows describe a free federal return that still has to get past the eligibility rules. Compare inside a market first, then across.

What Does a CPA Charge for Taxes vs an Enrolled Agent?

The 2025 NATP Fee Study puts the CPA base 1040 at $280 and the enrolled agent at $228, a $52 gap per return. Both sit well above the roughly $185 charged by preparers without a credential.

According to Axis Intelligence Research, that works out to a credential premium of 1.51x for CPAs and 1.23x for enrolled agents over non-credentialed preparers. The premium is not arbitrary. The IRS’s credentials guidance is explicit that enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys hold unlimited representation rights, meaning they can represent you in audits, collection matters and appeals whether or not they prepared the return. A PTIN holder with no credential and no Annual Filing Season Program record can prepare your return but has no authority to represent you before the IRS on it.

That is the part of the fee that a low quote quietly removes. If the return draws a CP2000 notice in eighteen months, the preparer you paid $185 may not be able to stand between you and the IRS.

Enrolled agents deserve more attention than they get from consumers. They are licensed directly by the IRS, pass a three-part Special Enrollment Examination, and must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years, per the IRS. For a purely federal individual return with an investment schedule or a rental, the enrolled agent at $228 delivers the same representation rights as the CPA at $280. The CPA premium earns its keep when the engagement reaches beyond tax: attest work, multi-entity books, or state-licensed advisory.

How Do Preparers Actually Price a Return?

Almost half of practitioners (48%) set a minimum fee and add charges for complexity; 39% charge a set fee per form; only 7% bill a straight hourly rate, per NATP data reported by Accounting Today. Half of respondents put their 1040 minimum between $150 and $350.

That pricing structure matters for your quote. Under a per-form model, every schedule is a line item. Under a minimum-plus-complexity model, the fee moves with the preparer’s judgment of how messy your file is. Ask which model your preparer uses before you hand over documents.

What Is the Average Hourly Rate for a Tax Preparer?

The average set hourly rate is $182 in the 2025 study, up from $179 in 2023, and the middle half of hourly billers charge between $129 and $250. That is a 1.7% increase across two years, which tells you hourly billing is not where the price action is. The increases are landing in flat per-return fees.

Fully Loaded Return Cost: The Axis FLRC Comparison

The Fully Loaded Return Cost (FLRC) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric that prices one defined return profile through every channel on the same basis. It answers the question no vendor page answers: for my return, what is the total?

FLRC = base preparation price + required schedule add-ons + state filing cost (where the source publishes one) + optional payment-method fees, stated per return-year.

Three standardized profiles:

  • Profile 1, simple W-2 filer: standard deduction, no schedules beyond the credits the free editions allow.
  • Profile 2, itemizer: W-2 income plus Schedule A (mortgage interest, charitable gifts, state and local taxes).
  • Profile 3, self-employed: W-2 or 1099 income plus Schedule C.

2. Itemizer (Sch. A)$333 to $341$281 to $289$238 to $246$109 (Deluxe)Not eligible on vendor free tiers
3. Self-employed (Sch. C)$403 to $415$351 to $363$308 to $320$159 (Home & Business)Not eligible on vendor free tiers

Source: Axis Intelligence Research FLRC calculation. Professional ranges = NATP credential base fee + NATP schedule add-on (low end = average in communities under 10,000; high end = communities of 50,000-plus). Professional FLRC is federal only because NATP reports that 54% of preparers charge for a state return without a published average state fee. TurboTax = Intuit Desktop list price + $25 state e-file.

According to Axis Intelligence Research, the CPA-to-DIY ratio is about 3.1 to 1 for an itemizer and about 2.5 to 1 for a Schedule C filer. The gap narrows as the return gets harder, which is the reverse of what most people assume. Software prices step up in large increments (the move from TurboTax Deluxe to Home & Business is $50), while a CPA’s Schedule C add-on averages $123 to $135 per NATP. Software gets relatively cheaper at the simple end and relatively more expensive, in your hours and your risk, at the complex end.

Commentary, David Park: The 11pm version of this question is “am I wasting money paying someone?” For Profile 1, often yes, if you qualify for Free File. For Profile 3, the answer turns on one thing the price table cannot show: whether a Schedule C error would cost you more than $250. If you are claiming a home office, vehicle use and quarterly estimates, it can.

The Fees That Hide Below the Sticker Price

The FLRC deliberately includes the line items most people discover at checkout:

  • Paying from your refund: Intuit discloses a $40 service fee to deduct TurboTax charges from a federal or state refund. H&R Block’s Refund Transfer carries a $42 fee. That turns a $109 TurboTax Deluxe FLRC into $149.
  • State filing in desktop software: $25 per state e-file at TurboTax (New York and Washington excepted), $19.95 at H&R Block software plus $39.95 per additional state program.
  • Audit add-ons: TurboTax Desktop Audit Defense lists at $40 (Deluxe), $45 (Premier) and $60 (Home & Business).
  • Live help on desktop: TurboTax’s Live Tax Advice add-on is $60.

The payment-method fee is the most avoidable dollar in this entire table. It is a charge for the privilege of not using a debit card.

How Much Does Tax Prep Cost Over 3 and 5 Years?

A tax relationship is a recurring cost, so a single-year price understates the decision. NATP’s 2025 study reports that 83% of practitioners raise fees every one to two years, typically by 6% to 10%. Axis Intelligence Research used that disclosed range to project two escalation paths:

  • Low path: +6% every two years.
  • High path: +10% every year.
  • DIY software: held flat at today’s list price (no vendor publishes forward pricing, so we do not invent an escalator).

Year-one professional FLRC uses the NATP Schedule A add-on midpoint of $57. Source: Axis Intelligence Research estimates; formula in Methodology.

For a self-employed filer the five-year spread widens: Axis Intelligence Research estimates $2,145 to $2,497 cumulatively with a CPA (Schedule C add-on midpoint $129), against $795 for TurboTax Desktop Home & Business with state e-file.

The five-year number is where the real decision lives. A $1,222 to $1,512 gap between a CPA and DIY for an itemizer is a fair price for representation rights and planning advice if you use them. It is an expensive habit if all you get is data entry.

Subscription Pricing Has Arrived for Small Business Filers

Intuit’s TurboTax Expert 365 Business, available to sole proprietors and single-member LLCs, bills $61 a month plus $38 a month for the required QuickBooks Simple Start, per Intuit’s disclosures. Annualized, that is $1,188, according to Axis Intelligence Research, covering quarterly bookkeeping review, quarterly estimates, advisory sessions and the business return. Compare it against the NATP average business-return minimum of $634 before bookkeeping, and the question becomes whether you would otherwise pay a bookkeeper. If you would, the bundle can come out ahead. If your books are already clean, it costs more than the return alone. Our accounting software comparison covers the bookkeeping side of that decision.

What Moves the Price of Tax Preparation?

Credential

The single biggest driver in the NATP data: $185 to $228 to $280 for the same base return as you move from no credential to EA to CPA. The premium buys representation rights and, in the CPA’s case, a state license with its own ethics and continuing education regime.

Where You Live

The average base 1040 costs $185 in communities under 10,000 people and $233 in communities of 50,000-plus, a $48 (26%) gap per Axis Intelligence Research’s calculation. NATP reports that the Northeast runs higher on itemized returns and the Midwest shows some of the lowest fees nationally. If you file remotely, a preparer in a smaller market can legally prepare your federal return; state licensing questions apply mainly to CPAs offering attest work.

Schedules and Forms

Add-ons stack. In large communities NATP averages $61 for Schedule A, $135 for Schedule C and $66 for Schedule D. A return with all three adds $262 to a base fee before state filing.

State Returns

54% of preparers charge for any state return and 18% charge nothing extra for states when they prepare the federal return. In states with city or school-district returns, the add-ons can exceed the state fee itself. Ask for a quote that names every jurisdiction.

Timing and File Quality

Practitioners report a strained capacity picture: 18% prepared fewer returns last year, and more than half of those were phasing out on purpose. Growing practices outnumbered static ones 48% to 37%. Fewer preparers and steady demand is the setup for continued increases, and disorganized files are where firms push hardest. Arrive with a complete, labeled document set and you remove the easiest reason to bill above the quote.

The End of IRS Direct File

The IRS did not offer Direct File in the 2026 filing season. The remaining free federal routes are IRS Free File guided software, for adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less through partner software, and Free File Fillable Forms at any income, per IRS.gov. The IRS states that Free File partners may not upsell bank products such as refund anticipation loans or audit protection inside the program. For filers above the AGI limit, the free floor now runs through vendor free editions, which TurboTax says roughly 37% of taxpayers qualify for and H&R Block puts at about 52%. Those figures use each company’s own eligibility definition, so they are not comparable to each other.

Who Is Paying for Tax Preparation Services in 2026?

Professionals still file the majority. Through April 10, 2026, the IRS received 61,365,000 e-filed returns from tax professionals and 50,792,000 self-prepared, per IRS filing season statistics. According to Axis Intelligence Research, that puts the professional share at 54.7% of e-filed returns. Both channels shrank year over year (professional -2.3%, self-prepared -0.6%), but the professional channel shrank faster.

H&R Block’s fiscal 2026 results show the price side of that story. Assisted tax preparation revenue rose to $2,560.9 million from $2,413.2 million, growth of 6.1% per Axis Intelligence Research’s calculation, while the company attributed the increase primarily to higher net average charge and company-owned volume, per its fiscal 2026 results release. Fewer total returns, higher revenue per return: the national market is paying more per filing, not filing more.

The same release reports $145.1 million in Refund Transfer revenue, $84.6 million from Peace of Mind and $34.2 million from Tax Identity Shield. Axis Intelligence Research calculates those three lines together equal 10.3% of assisted prep revenue. Dividing Refund Transfer revenue by the $42 listed fee implies roughly 3.46 million transfers, an estimate that assumes the fee is uniform. Translation for consumers: a meaningful slice of the tax prep economy is paid for the convenience of not paying the prep fee up front.

How to Choose a Tax Preparation Service at the Right Price

File free if Profile 1 describes you. If your AGI is $89,000 or less and your return is W-2 plus standard deduction, IRS Free File is the cleanest route because the IRS bars upselling inside the program. Start at IRS.gov, not at a vendor homepage, or you may land in a paid product.

Use software for an itemized return you understand. At an FLRC of $109 (TurboTax Desktop Deluxe with state e-file), the DIY route costs about a third of a CPA. Pay with a card to avoid the $40 refund-processing fee.

Hire an enrolled agent for federal complexity. Rentals, a K-1, crypto with real cost-basis problems, or a prior IRS notice: the EA’s $228 base fee comes with the same unlimited representation rights as a CPA.

Hire a CPA when tax is one piece of a larger picture. Multi-state business income, entity elections, or a business that needs financial statements. If you are still forming the entity, our LLC formation guide covers the state filing costs that come before the first return.

Before you sign, get three things in writing: the pricing model (per-form, minimum-plus-complexity, or hourly), every jurisdiction included, and whether notice response is covered or billed separately. Then check the preparer in the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers.

Tax Preparation Cost Questions, Answered

Is a $280 CPA fee worth it for a W-2 return with no deductions?

Usually not on price alone. That return qualifies for $0 options (IRS Free File at AGI of $89,000 or less, or vendor free editions). The CPA fee buys representation rights and advice; if you would not use either, it is the most expensive way to file a simple return.

Can an enrolled agent do everything a CPA does at tax time?

For federal tax, nearly. The IRS grants enrolled agents, CPAs and attorneys the same unlimited representation rights, covering audits, collections and appeals. EAs do not perform attest work such as audited financial statements, which is where the CPA license matters.

Why did my preparer’s fee rise again this year?

NATP’s 2025 study reports that 83% of practitioners raise fees every one to two years, typically by 6% to 10%. Credentialed capacity is tightening as practitioners phase out, while the average hourly rate barely moved (from $179 to $182), so the increases are concentrated in flat per-return fees.

What does a Schedule C add to a professional tax prep fee?

On average $123 in communities under 10,000 people and $135 in communities of 50,000-plus, per NATP. Add that to the credential base fee: $403 to $415 with a CPA, per Axis Intelligence Research.

Is paying the tax prep fee out of my refund a good idea?

It is the most avoidable cost in tax preparation. Intuit discloses a $40 fee for paying TurboTax out of a refund, and H&R Block’s Refund Transfer carries a $42 fee. Paying with a debit card removes it entirely.

Which is cheaper in 2026, H&R Block or TurboTax?

It depends on the channel you compare. H&R Block’s paid online tier starts at $65 federal, and its assisted service starts at $89 to $99. TurboTax Desktop Deluxe lists at $84 with one state download included. TurboTax Online tier prices are set dynamically by tax situation, so compare a live quote for your own return using the FLRC method above.

Is IRS Direct File available for 2026 returns?

No. Direct File was not offered in the 2026 filing season. Free federal filing remains available through IRS Free File guided software for AGI of $89,000 or less and through Free File Fillable Forms at any income.

Methodology

Scope. U.S. individual income tax preparation for tax year 2025 returns filed in the 2026 season, plus the business-return minimum. Vendor prices were read on October 3, 2026 from vendor-owned pages; professional fees come from the 2025 NATP Fee Study as reported by Accounting Today (December 23, 2025), with the fee-increase figures from NATP’s own summary. The full NATP study is member-only, so only the published figures are used.

FLRC formula. FLRC = base preparation price + schedule add-ons required by the profile + state filing cost where the source publishes one + optional payment-method fee. Professional FLRC low end = credential base fee + add-on average in communities under 10,000; high end = add-on average in communities of 50,000-plus. NATP publishes add-ons by community size, not by credential, so the add-on is applied equally to each credential. Professional FLRC excludes state fees because no average state fee was published. Multi-year FLRC compounds year-one FLRC (add-on midpoints: Schedule A $57, Schedule C $129) at +6% every two years (low) or +10% every year (high), based on NATP’s disclosed 6% to 10% typical increase. DIY prices are held flat.

What we declined to compute. We did not merge NATP survey averages with vendor list prices into a single “national median.” A survey mean of independent practices and a posted software price measure different things, and averaging them would produce a number that describes nobody’s bill. The declined calculation is logged in the CSV as a retracted row.

Discrepancies published as found. H&R Block shows $89 (FAQ) and $99 (full-service module) as assisted starting prices on the same page; both are listed.
