Quick Answer. US spot bitcoin and ether ETFs hold $68.6 billion of cumulative net inflows since launch. That total has barely moved in 2026: net flows are −$316 million through November 3, per Farside Investors data, essentially flat for the year. At the 2026 pace, Axis Intelligence Research’s base case leaves the total at $68.2 billion at end-2027, with a range of $52.6 billion to $111.9 billion. The one driver to watch is whether Q3 2026’s $9.4 billion inflow quarter repeats.
Key Findings
- US spot bitcoin ETFs took in $35.2 billion in 2024 and $21.3 billion in 2025. In 2026 they have taken in −$60 million through November 3, according to Farside Investors daily data.
- IBIT added $3.7 billion in 2026 while every other US spot bitcoin ETF combined lost $3.8 billion. GBTC (−$2.8 billion) and FBTC (−$1.9 billion) account for most of the outflow.
- Axis Intelligence Research projects $68.2 billion in cumulative net inflows for US spot bitcoin and ether ETFs at end-2027 in its base case (price-free; range $52.6 billion to $111.9 billion). Separately, it projects $87.5 billion in BlackRock digital-asset ETF assets at end-2027, with prices frozen at September 30, 2026 marks.
- The October 29, 2026 Binance theft, about $6.4 billion according to Chainalysis, is 1.9 times Chainalysis’s figure for all crypto hacks in 2025 ($3.4 billion). An Axis calculation from three reported figures puts 2026 losses at no less than $7.7 billion.
- Grayscale’s Krista Lynch said about $15 billion of 2026 bitcoin ETF inflows was “within the realm of possibility” in May 2026. With two months left, the 2026 total stands at −$60 million.
Will Crypto Go Up in 2027? Check How the 2026 Calls Did First
Axis does not publish price targets. What we can publish is a scorecard: how last year’s confident calls compare with what the data now shows. The 2026 record should make anyone careful with the 2027 ones.
| Forecast | Who, when | What it said | What the data shows (as of Nov 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin new all-time high in H1 2026 | Grayscale, 2026 Digital Asset Outlook (Dec 15, 2025) | “likely” new high in the first half | Missed. The CF Benchmarks rate fell 32.43% in H1 2026, from $87,463.03 to $59,101.49 (IBIT Form 10-Q, Q2 2026) |
| US market-structure law in 2026 | Grayscale, same report | Bipartisan bill becomes law in 2026 | Missed. Senate cloture failed 49–50 on September 15, 2026 (Orrick, Oct 2, 2026) |
| ~$15B into US spot bitcoin ETFs in 2026 | Krista Lynch, Grayscale, to TheStreet (May 26, 2026) | “within the realm of possibility” | Far off. −$60M year to date through November 3 (Farside Investors) |
| Bitcoin $150,000–$200,000 “within the next year” | Bernstein note, reported by The Block (Aug 19, 2025) | Range by roughly August 2026 | Missed. The highest close on record is still $124,311 on October 7, 2025 (Google Finance data, DataReportal Oct 2026 Statshot) |
| USDC supply $99B in 2026, $173B in 2027 | Bernstein, same note | Stablecoin supply up sharply | Behind. USDC circulation is $70.9 billion (DefiLlama, Nov 4, 2026), 28% short with two months left |
Each of these misses assumed that regulation and new institutional money would arrive on schedule and lift prices with them. They didn’t. Grayscale’s bitcoin trust implies a price near $77,779 on November 3, 2026 (AUM divided by bitcoin held). That is about 37% below the October 2025 peak, though the two figures come from different price feeds.
Bernstein’s broader call, “a long crypto bull market… potentially peaking in 2027”, is still open. It will be graded in the next edition. Live price history is on our bitcoin statistics page, and ether is on our Ethereum statistics page.
Are Investors Still Buying Crypto ETFs?
Across the market, barely. Within the market, the money is moving from one issuer to another.
| US spot ETF net flows (US$M) | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 YTD (to Nov 3) | Q3 2026 | Since launch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin ETFs | 35,245.9 | 21,348.3 | −60.3 | 6,359.6 | 56,534 |
| Ether ETFs | (from Jul 23) | 9,686.3 | −255.9 | 3,050.0 | 12,091.3 |
| Combined | — | — | −316.2 | 9,409.6 | 68,625.2 |
Source: Farside Investors, daily flow tables captured November 4, 2026. Yearly and quarterly figures are Axis sums of Farside’s daily totals; our sum of the bitcoin series matches Farside’s own since-launch total of $56,534M.
Combined, cumulative net inflows peaked at $71.5 billion at the end of September 2025. A year later, at the end of September 2026, they were back at $71.5 billion, before October’s outflows; the full quarterly series is in the dataset. Two quarters account for most of the year. Q2 2026 saw −$4,894 million leave bitcoin ETFs, the weakest quarter in the series. IBIT’s own 10-Q says US spot bitcoin ETPs had “their largest quarterly net outflows since such products launched in January 2024”. Q3 then brought +$6,360 million back. Investors were selling the drawdown and buying the recovery.
Underneath the flat total, one issuer is taking share:
| Fund | 2026 net flows to Nov 3 (US$M) |
|---|---|
| iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) | +3,717.9 |
| Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) | −2,794.1 |
| Fidelity Wise Origin (FBTC) | −1,928.7 |
| All US spot bitcoin ETFs except IBIT | −3,778.2 |
GBTC is easy to explain: its fee is 1.50% (Grayscale), against IBIT’s 0.25%. Fidelity’s outflow is harder to explain on fees alone, and the data here cannot say why it is happening. Assets that stay in a 1.50% fund while a 0.25% option exists are earning the issuer a lot more than cheaper products would.
BlackRock‘s filings show the same pattern in dollars. Its digital-asset ETFs took in $6,305 million net in the 12 months to September 30, 2026, while their AUM fell 23.4% to $79,632 million (Q3 2026 earnings release). Price, not redemptions, caused the fall. The issuer breakdown is on our BlackRock statistics page, the wider fund industry is on our ETF statistics page, and the products and fee moves shaping ETFs next year are in our ETF trends analysis.
Crypto ETF Assets Forecast 2027: The Axis Base Case
Axis Intelligence Research projects $68.2 billion in cumulative net inflows into US spot bitcoin and ether ETFs on December 31, 2027 in its base case, compared with $68.6 billion on November 3, 2026.
How the projection is built
This is not a price forecast. Cumulative net inflow is the money investors have actually put in, which is the part of ETF assets they control. Market moves are excluded by construction.
Cumulative net inflows (end-2027) = $68,625.2M (Nov 3, 2026) + observed daily flow pace × 423 calendar days
| Scenario | Daily pace | Window the pace comes from | End-2027 cumulative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downside | −$37.92M | H1 2026 (−$6,863.5M over 181 days) | $52.6B |
| Base | −$1.03M | 2026 to date (−$316.2M over 307 days) | $68.2B |
| Upside | +$102.28M | Q3 2026 (+$9,409.6M over 92 days) | $111.9B |
Sensitivity: which assumption matters
- Flow pace: every extra (or missing) $1 billion per quarter changes the end-2027 total by about $4.6 billion.
- Window choice: using the trailing 12 months (−$6,593.1M) instead of 2026 to date puts the base case at $61.0 billion. That window includes the November–December 2025 sell-off.
The base case is close to zero growth because the observed data is close to zero growth. The upside requires Q3 2026’s pace to last for 14 months. A similar pace has held for a full year once before: in 2024, bitcoin ETFs alone averaged about $96 million a day.
A second, AUM-based reading: BlackRock
BlackRock is the only large issuer that reports digital-asset AUM and flows in an SEC-filed document every quarter. Holding prices at September 30, 2026 marks:
AUM (end-2027) = $79,632M + quarterly net-flow pace × 5 quarters
| Scenario | Pace per quarter | Source of pace | End-2027 AUM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downside | −$1,090.5M | H1 2026 | $74.2B |
| Base | +$1,576.25M | Trailing 12 months ($6,305M ÷ 4) | $87.5B |
| Upside | +$7,907M | Q3 2026 | $119.2B |
Every $1 billion per quarter of flow changes the result by $5.0 billion. A 10% move in prices changes it by about $8.8 billion. The two models disagree for one reason: BlackRock grows while the market as a whole does not. In Q3 2026, Farside’s IBIT and ETHA rows add up to $7,356.4M, against BlackRock’s reported $7,907M. The gap reflects BlackRock reporting more digital-asset products than those two ETFs.
Where this sits against published forecasts
We found no checkable published forecast of US crypto ETF assets or cumulative flows for end-2027. The closest comparison is Grayscale’s ~$15 billion figure for 2026 bitcoin ETF inflows, which the year to date is running far below.

Who Holds the Bitcoin? Institutions, ETFs and Corporate Treasuries
One company holds more bitcoin than the largest ETF. Strategy reported 849,327 BTC on November 2, 2026, at an average cost of $75,451 per coin (company-reported, strategy.com).
IBIT’s holdings are reported in its filings. IBIT held 770,792 BTC on December 31, 2025 and 734,261 BTC on June 30, 2026 (Form 10-Q). For October 26, 2026, Axis Intelligence Research estimates about 809,600 BTC, dividing net assets ($64,690,310,087) by the CME CF reference rate on the fund page ($79,900.95). On that estimate, IBIT added about 75,300 BTC between July and late October, more than it lost in the first half.
| Holder | Bitcoin held | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strategy | 849,327 BTC | Nov 2, 2026 | Strategy (company-reported) |
| iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) | ~809,600 BTC (Axis estimate) | Oct 26, 2026 | iShares fund page |
| iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) | 734,261 BTC | Jun 30, 2026 | IBIT Form 10-Q |
| Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) | 124,526.67 BTC | Nov 3, 2026 | Grayscale |
| Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) | 62,937.09 BTC | Nov 3, 2026 | Grayscale |
| Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB) | 37,148.30 BTC | Nov 2, 2026 | Bitwise |
| ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) | 29,101 BTC | Nov 4, 2026 | ARK / 21Shares |
VanEck’s HODL reported $1.14 billion in total net assets on November 3, 2026. On the ether side, iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) reported $6.93 billion in net assets. Grayscale’s two ether trusts held 678,036.71 ETH (ETHE) and 917,081.34 ETH (ETH), implying an ether price near $2,288.
Strategy’s average cost of $75,451 is close to the market price implied by Grayscale’s November 3 figures ($77,779). An ETF holder can redeem at any time. A corporate holder that has bought with borrowed and equity capital has to keep financing its position whatever the price does.
Crypto Regulation 2027: What Changes and When
January 18, 2027: the GENIUS Act takes effect. The act became Public Law 119-27 on July 18, 2025 (Congress.gov). The OCC’s final implementing rule, published October 21, 2026, confirms that “the final rule and the GENIUS Act take effect on January 18, 2027.” According to Sidley’s summary, the rule requires reserves equal to or greater than outstanding stablecoins at all times. It also requires an operational backstop equal to 12 months of total expenses, and keeps the statute’s ban on paying holders interest or yield.
The CLARITY Act has to start over. The House passed H.R. 3633 by 294–134 on July 17, 2025. The Senate Banking Committee advanced it in May 2026 (IBIT Form 10-Q). Cloture on the floor then failed 49–50 on September 15, 2026 (Orrick). Bills not enacted in the 119th Congress generally have to be reintroduced in the 120th, which opens in January 2027 (DLA Piper). The midterm elections were held on November 3, 2026, and the new Congress’s composition will decide how quickly that happens. In the meantime the agencies are writing rules: the SEC proposed “Regulation Crypto Assets” on August 18, 2026, and the CFTC sent its market rule to OIRA on September 17, 2026.
Europe has already passed its deadline. MiCA’s transitional period ended on July 1, 2026. Since then, providers without authorization must stop serving EU clients (AMF). Elliptic counted 213 CASP entries (crypto-asset service providers licensed under MiCA) across 23 jurisdictions in ESMA’s interim register at the end of June.
The result for 2027 is uneven. US stablecoin issuers get a rulebook in January, while US exchanges and token issuers still have no statute.
Are Crypto Exchanges Losing Volume?
Yes. Trading on centralized exchanges was at a multi-year low in mid-2026.
- Combined spot and derivatives volume fell 23.9% to $3.76 trillion in July 2026, the lowest month since November 2023 (CCData Exchange Review, August 6, 2026). That is 58% below January 2025’s $9.03 trillion.
- Binance’s spot volume fell to $196 billion in July, but its spot market share rose to 26.9%.
- Coinbase’s transaction revenue fell 43.6% year on year in Q3 2026, to $590.2 million. Its stablecoin revenue held at $306.9 million, equal to 52% of transaction revenue against 31% a year earlier (Coinbase Q3 2026 Form 10-Q).
With crypto trading volume falling, exchanges are listing traditional assets in crypto contract formats. On October 29, 2026, Binance listed six perpetual contracts on traditional securities, including Pfizer, Amgen and MercadoLibre, settled in USDT (Binance announcement). A perpetual contract is a futures contract with no expiry date. CoinShares reported the same week that ICE, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, plans 24/7 perpetual futures built on Hyperliquid with trade[XYZ], subject to CFTC approval. For 2027, the question is whether crypto exchanges can make money from trading stocks and ETFs in crypto formats now that crypto trading itself has slowed.
Fee schedules are on our crypto exchange fees page, and our ranking of US crypto exchanges compares the main platforms.
Are Stablecoins the Growth Story for 2027?
They are the most likely candidate, but the 2026 numbers are flatter than the forecasts.
DefiLlama shows USDT at $178.1 billion and USDC at $70.9 billion in circulation on November 4, 2026, $249.1 billion combined. Bernstein’s August 2025 note put USDC at $68 billion. Over the 14 months since, USDC has grown by less than $3 billion.
The case for growth in 2027 rests on the January 18 start date. The case against is the yield ban: a dollar token that cannot pay interest competes with money-market funds that can, and the Fed held rates at 3.75%–4.00% in October after a September hike (CoinShares, October 30, 2026). Card spending data is on our stablecoin card statistics page.
How Much Crypto Was Stolen in 2026?
At least $7.7 billion, by an Axis Intelligence Research calculation. Nearly all of it was taken in one afternoon.
| Incident or period | Amount | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| All hacks, H1 2026 (207 incidents, a record count) | $972M | Jan–Jun 2026 | TRM Labs |
| KelpDAO exploit | ~$292M | April 2026 | TRM Labs |
| Drift Protocol breach | ~$285M | April 2026 | TRM Labs |
| Bitget hot-wallet breach | $351.6M | Sept 24, 2026 | TRM Labs (Bitget-reported loss) |
| Binance hot-wallet theft | ~$6.4B | Oct 29, 2026 | Chainalysis |
| For comparison: all hacks, 2025 | $3.4B+ | Jan–early Dec 2025 | Chainalysis |
| For comparison: Bybit | $1.5B | Feb 2025 | Chainalysis |
The $7.7 billion floor adds TRM’s H1 total, the Bitget loss and Chainalysis’s Binance figure (972 + 351.6 + 6,400 = $7,723.6 million). It leaves out every other incident from July to October. It also mixes two trackers’ methods, so it is a minimum and not an annual total. Until both firms publish full-year figures, no methodology-consistent 2026 total exists.
Chainalysis attributes the Binance theft to TraderTraitor, a North Korean group, and traced stolen funds mixing on-chain with funds from the Bitget breach. About $2.8 billion had been frozen as of 11:30 a.m. ET on November 3, 2026, which is 44% of the amount taken. Binance’s own figures are close to Chainalysis’s. CEO Richard Teng said on X that about $6.34 billion in assets were affected and that about $2.85 billion had been “frozen or intercepted” with law enforcement, issuers and blockchain intelligence firms. He also said that “no user bears the loss” and that 98% of the affected tokens had been replenished (as reported by The Daily Hodl, November 4, 2026). Withdrawals reopened in stages, with a further group of tokens added from 12:00 Beijing time on November 5 (PANews). Whether that holds will show up in Binance’s next proof-of-reserves report and in its net flows.
TRM linked 66% of H1 2026 losses (about $643 million) to North Korea. Physical attacks are also rising: Chainalysis counted 46 “wrench attacks” (physical coercion of crypto holders) through late June 2026, with more than $30 million extracted.
The longer history is on our crypto crime statistics page, and wider losses are in our cybercrime statistics.
Who Owns Crypto in 2026? Ownership by Age and Gender
Fewer people say they own crypto. 8.7% of internet users aged 16+ owned some form of cryptocurrency in Q2 2026, down from 10.2% in Q2 2025, a relative fall of 14.7% (GWI survey data, published in the DataReportal Digital 2026 October Global Statshot).
| Age | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| 16–24 | 4.8% | 11.1% |
| 25–34 | 6.7% | 14.3% |
| 35–44 | 7.3% | 13.2% |
| 45–54 | 5.3% | 11.4% |
| 55–64 | 4.7% | 7.5% |
| 65+* | 1.5% | 3.3% |
Source: GWI, Q2 2026, via DataReportal. *65+ data not available in all countries. GWI removed Russia from all periods, so these values differ from earlier reports.
Ownership is highest among men aged 25–34, and in every age band men own crypto at roughly twice the rate of women or more. Fewer individuals say they hold crypto, but IBIT took in $3.7 billion this year. Crypto is moving from personal wallets into brokerage accounts, and that shift is the change to plan for in 2027.
What Could Change This Outlook
- Another exchange-scale hack. Binance’s theft came one month after Bitget’s, and Chainalysis’s on-chain tracing links the two. A third would put further pressure on exchanges’ custody models and the retail activity they still have.
- Rates. Fed policy is tightening, not easing: a September 2026 hike, rates held at 3.75%–4.00% in October, and September CPI at 3.7% (CoinShares). That raises the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets and dollar tokens that cannot pay interest.
- The new Congress. If CLARITY is not reintroduced early in 2027, US token issuers stay under agency rulemaking that Orrick says may take more than a year.
- Price. It is excluded from the cumulative-flow model, but it swings every AUM figure: ±10% moves BlackRock’s base case by about $8.8 billion.
Crypto Outlook 2027: FAQ
Are bitcoin ETFs still getting inflows?
Barely, in 2026 as a whole: US spot bitcoin ETFs are at −$60 million for the year through November 3, essentially flat, after $21.3 billion in 2025 (Farside Investors). IBIT is the exception, with +$3.7 billion, while GBTC and FBTC lost a combined $4.7 billion.
How much money is in crypto ETFs?
US spot bitcoin and ether ETFs have taken in $68.6 billion in cumulative net inflows since launch, as of November 3, 2026. That is $56.5 billion for bitcoin and $12.1 billion for ether. Market value is higher or lower than that depending on prices. BlackRock’s digital-asset ETFs alone held $79.6 billion on September 30, 2026.
Was the Binance hack the biggest crypto theft ever?
Yes, on the figures available. Chainalysis puts the October 29, 2026 theft at about $6.4 billion, and Binance CEO Richard Teng puts it at about $6.34 billion. That is roughly 4.3 times Bybit’s $1.5 billion in February 2025, and about 1.9 times Chainalysis’s total for all 2025 hacks.
When does the GENIUS Act take effect?
January 18, 2027. The act became Public Law 119-27 on July 18, 2025, and the OCC confirmed the start date in its October 21, 2026 final rule.
Is the CLARITY Act dead?
It is stalled, but it can be revived. It passed the House 294–134 in July 2025 but failed Senate cloture 49–50 in September 2026. Bills not passed by the 119th Congress generally have to be reintroduced after January 2027.
Who owns more bitcoin, Strategy or BlackRock?
Strategy: 849,327 BTC on November 2, 2026, by its own count. BlackRock’s IBIT held 734,261 BTC on June 30, 2026 per its 10-Q, and about 809,600 BTC on October 26 by Axis’s estimate.
How many people own crypto?
8.7% of internet users aged 16+ in Q2 2026, according to GWI, down from 10.2% a year earlier. Men aged 25–34 have the highest rate, at 14.3%.
Does Axis predict the bitcoin price for 2027?
No. Axis projects flows and assets, not prices or index levels, and this page is not investment advice. Forecasters’ published price calls appear above only in the track-record table, each attributed to its author.
Methodology
Flow data. We used Farside Investors’ daily US$ million tables for all US spot bitcoin and ether ETFs, captured November 4, 2026. Farside compiles these from issuer data. We parsed every daily row and summed by year and quarter. Our bitcoin sum equals Farside’s own since-launch total ($56,534M). Farside’s IBIT rows match IBIT’s Form 10-Q net share transactions: Q1 2026 $1,111.7M vs $1,112.0M, Q2 2026 −$2,950.5M vs −$2,950.6M. The November 4 row was incomplete at capture, so the data effectively runs to November 3.
Why two Base Cases. The cumulative-flow model covers the whole US spot market and needs no price assumption. The BlackRock model gives a dollar AUM figure from filed data but covers one issuer. We kept them separate rather than combining them, because they measure different things.
Pace windows. Each scenario uses a real observed window (H1 2026, 2026 to date, Q3 2026), converted to a daily rate and applied over the 423 calendar days from November 3, 2026 to December 31, 2027.
Holdings. GBTC, BTC, BITB, ARKB, ETHE and ETH holdings are issuer-reported. IBIT’s June 30 figure comes from its 10-Q. IBIT’s October figure is an Axis estimate. FBTC holdings could not be obtained, so no total of ETF-held bitcoin is published here.
Theft figures. TRM Labs and Chainalysis use different methods. Each figure carries its firm’s name, and the $7.7 billion floor is the only combined number.
Ownership data. GWI survey results for internet users, as published in DataReportal’s October 2026 Statshot. The country slide was not available, so this edition has no country ranking.
Limitations. No 13F (institutional holdings) analysis. Exchange-volume data runs to July 2026. Binance’s figures on the theft come from CEO Richard Teng’s posts on X as reported by The Daily Hodl, because Binance’s announcements could not be opened directly. Daily ETF flows are counted through November 3, 2026.
