Bank of America closed 134 U.S. retail financial centers in the twelve months to June 30, 2026 — and its deposits per remaining branch rose to a record. Axis Intelligence Research puts Branch Deposit Intensity at $271.1 million per financial center in the second quarter of 2026, up 4.34% year over year, the sharpest annual move in the series we track.
Quick Answer: What Are the Key Bank of America Statistics for 2026?
Bank of America held $3.50 trillion in assets and $2.03 trillion in deposits at June 30, 2026, serving more than 69 million consumer and small business clients through 3,530 retail financial centers and 49.8 million active digital banking users. Second-quarter 2026 net income was $9.07 billion on revenue of $31.56 billion. Axis Intelligence Research measures Branch Deposit Intensity at $271.1 million per branch, a record in our series.
Key Findings
- Axis Intelligence Research finds that Bank of America’s Branch Deposit Intensity reached $271.1 million of Consumer Banking deposits per U.S. retail financial center in the second quarter of 2026, up from $259.8 million a year earlier.
- Bank of America operated 3,530 U.S. retail financial centers at June 30, 2026, a net decrease of 134 from the prior year, according to the company’s Form 10-Q filed with the SEC.
- Bank of America reported 49.8 million active digital banking users and 42.1 million active mobile banking users at June 30, 2026, meaning 84.4% of its digital base now banks primarily by phone, per Axis Intelligence Research calculations.
- Axis Intelligence Research estimates Bank of America generated 10.32% of all net income earned by FDIC-insured institutions in 2025, comparing its $30.51 billion full-year result against the FDIC’s $295.6 billion industry aggregate.
- Axis Intelligence Research finds Bank of America now serves 14,117 active digital banking users per remaining U.S. financial center, up from 13,373 one year earlier.
What Is the Axis Branch Deposit Intensity (BDI) Metric?
Every large U.S. bank publishes a branch count and every large U.S. bank publishes a deposit balance. Almost nobody divides one by the other and tracks the result over time. That ratio is where the retail banking story of this decade actually lives, so Axis Intelligence Research built and now maintains it.
Branch Deposit Intensity (BDI) is defined as:
BDI = Consumer Banking average deposits (USD millions) ÷ period-end U.S. retail financial centers
Both inputs come from the same reporting period of the same filing, which is what makes the figure reproducible. Consumer Banking average deposits are disclosed in Bank of America’s segment tables; the financial center count is disclosed in the Consumer Banking key indicators. No adjustment, no weighting, no normalization — a competent reader with the filing open can recompute every reading below in a spreadsheet.
BDI answers a question that raw branch counts cannot: when a bank closes a branch, does the deposit base follow the branch out the door, or does it redistribute onto the network that remains? For Bank of America, the answer through mid-2026 is unambiguous.

Branch Deposit Intensity is calculated by Axis Intelligence Research. Inputs are primary-source rows in the accompanying dataset. Snapshot as of June 30, 2026.
On a full-year basis the same construction gives 255.6 for 2024 and 261.3 for 2025 — a 2.26% increase. The 2026 second-quarter reading of 271.1 is a step change against that baseline, and the reason is visible in the inputs: deposits went up while the denominator went down hard.
Sarah Davis: The tempting read is that each branch got 4% more productive. It didn’t. Deposits grew about half a percent year over year; the branch count fell 3.66%. Roughly four-fifths of the BDI move is arithmetic from the denominator. That’s not a criticism of the metric — it’s the point of the metric. BDI tells you how much deposit weight the surviving network is carrying, and the answer is that Bank of America is asking each remaining building to hold a quarter of a billion dollars in balances. The strategic question is not whether the ratio can rise. It can always rise, right up until the branch that closes was the one anchoring the relationship.
How Many Bank of America Branches Are There in 2026?
Bank of America operated 3,530 retail financial centers across the United States at June 30, 2026, according to its quarterly report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company also reported approximately 15,000 ATMs — 14,939 branded machines — and coverage of all major U.S. markets.
The direction of travel is consistent and the pace is not slowing.
Bank of America Branch and ATM Count by Quarter

| June 30, 2026 | 3,530 | 14,939 | −98 (two quarters) | Bank of America Form 10-Q, June 30, 2026 |
Two things stand out. The first half of 2026 removed 98 centers, more than the whole of 2025 removed (72). The second is that the ATM fleet did not shrink alongside the branches — it grew, from 14,893 at the end of 2024 to 14,939 at June 30, 2026. Bank of America is not withdrawing from physical distribution. It is changing what physical distribution costs to operate.
The company’s own framing in the 10-Q is that it recorded a net decrease of 134 financial centers and an increase of 35 ATMs while continuing to optimize the consumer banking network.
Sarah Davis: Watch the ATM line, not the branch line. A branch carries a lease, a manager, tellers, a vault, and a compliance footprint. An ATM carries cash logistics and a maintenance contract. Swapping the first for the second holds the cash-access promise while removing most of the fixed cost behind it — and cash access is what a regulator, a city council, and a community group will ask about when a branch closes. The build-out is doing quiet work.
How Many Digital and Mobile Banking Users Does Bank of America Have?
Bank of America reported 49.8 million active digital banking users and 42.1 million active mobile banking users at June 30, 2026, both measured over a trailing 90-day window. Digital users grew 1.71% year over year; mobile users grew 2.98%.

Mobile share of digital users calculated by Axis Intelligence Research from the disclosed user counts.
Set the digital base against the shrinking branch network and the displacement becomes concrete. Axis Intelligence Research finds Bank of America now supports 14,117 active digital banking users per U.S. financial center, up from 13,373 a year earlier — a 5.6% increase in a single year, driven from both ends of the ratio.
Against the company’s stated base of more than 69 million consumer and small business clients, active digital users represent roughly 72% of the relationship book. That figure is an upper bound: the denominator is disclosed as an approximation, and the numerator counts 90-day actives rather than enrolled accounts. The honest version of the statistic is that somewhere close to three in ten Bank of America clients did not log in during the quarter — which is precisely the cohort a branch closure touches hardest.
How Much Money Does Bank of America Make?
Bank of America reported net income of $9.07 billion on revenue of $31.56 billion for the second quarter of 2026, against $7.17 billion and $27.44 billion in the same quarter of 2025. For the first six months of 2026, net income reached $17.66 billion on revenue of $61.83 billion — increases of 21.5% and 11.0% respectively.

The efficiency ratio is the line that connects this section to the branch section. It fell 359 basis points year over year to 59.02%, against a full-year 2025 ratio of 61.65%. Revenue grew 15.0% in the quarter while noninterest expense grew 8.4%. That gap is what operating leverage looks like on paper, and a network carrying 134 fewer leases is one of the inputs.
Bank of America’s Scale Against the U.S. Banking Industry
Axis Intelligence Research compared Bank of America’s full-year 2025 result against the aggregate reported by the FDIC. The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile for the fourth quarter of 2025 puts full-year net income for all FDIC-insured institutions at $295.6 billion, with an industry return on assets of 1.20%.
Axis calculation: $30,509M ÷ $295,600M = 10.32%
One bank holding company accounted for roughly a tenth of everything the insured U.S. banking system earned in 2025. The comparison carries a stated caveat: Bank of America Corporation’s consolidated results include non-bank subsidiaries — broker-dealers, asset managers — that are outside the FDIC’s insured-institution aggregate. It is a scale indicator, not a precise market share, and we publish it as one.
Sarah Davis: The industry’s net interest margin hit 3.39% in the fourth quarter of 2025, per the FDIC — the highest since 2019. Bank of America’s net interest yield in the second quarter of 2026 was 2.08%. That gap is not underperformance; it is what a balance sheet looks like when a trillion dollars of it sits in trading assets and securities financing rather than in loans. Comparing a universal bank’s margin to a community bank’s margin is comparing a fee-and-flow business to a spread business and calling the difference a verdict.
How Much Does Bank of America Hold in Deposits?
Total deposits stood at $2.03 trillion at June 30, 2026, up from $2.02 trillion at December 31, 2025. Consumer Banking held $953.2 billion of that at period end, with a quarterly average of $957.0 billion.

| Market capitalization | $399,884M | — | Bank of America Form 10-Q |
Deposits equal 57.9% of total assets. Consumer Banking’s total deposit spread was 3.08% in the second quarter of 2026, against 2.91% a year earlier — 17 basis points of additional spread on nearly a trillion dollars of balances, which is where a meaningful share of the segment’s $3.28 billion quarterly net income comes from.
The deposit franchise is also the reason the branch arithmetic matters at the regulatory level. Bank of America’s 10-K notes that at June 30, 2025 the company held more than 10% of the total deposits of insured depository institutions in the United States — the statutory cap that blocks it from acquiring another U.S. bank. Growth in consumer deposits has to be organic, and organic deposit growth from a shrinking branch network is a genuinely hard thing to engineer. The FDIC’s Summary of Deposits survey, which collects branch-office deposit data annually as of June 30, is the mechanism that keeps score.
How Much Do Bank of America Customers Spend on Cards?
Bank of America customers ran $101.9 billion through credit cards and $164.2 billion through debit cards in the second quarter of 2026 — $266.1 billion combined, up 9.0% year over year. Across full-year 2025, combined volume reached $972.4 billion.

Combined totals calculated by Axis Intelligence Research from the disclosed credit and debit volumes.
Debit is doing the heavy lifting. Debit volume grew 10.0% year over year in the quarter; credit grew 7.4%. Bank of America opened 999,000 new credit card accounts in the quarter, and the total credit card net charge-off ratio was 3.68% for full-year 2025.
Run card spend through the branch denominator and Axis Intelligence Research gets $75.4 million of combined quarterly card volume per U.S. financial center, up from $66.6 million a year earlier — 13.1% growth in throughput per building, none of which requires a building.
Sarah Davis: Debit outgrowing credit at a 10-to-7 clip, with a card charge-off ratio of 3.68%, is a portfolio telling you where its customer sits. Debit spend is money already in the account; credit spend is money the bank underwrites. When the first outpaces the second while charge-offs stay near cycle norms, you’re looking at a deposit franchise doing payments volume rather than a lender chasing revolving balances. That’s the safer mix, and it’s also the lower-yield one — hence the emphasis on annual card fees and premium products across the industry right now.
How Does Bank of America Compare to JPMorgan Chase?
The two largest U.S. banks are moving in opposite directions on physical distribution, which makes the comparison worth stating carefully.
| Measure (June 30, 2026) | Bank of America | JPMorganChase | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total assets | $3.50 trillion | $5.0 trillion | Company Form 10-Q and earnings release |
| Consumer segment quarterly net income | $3,281M (Consumer Banking) | $5,311M (Consumer & Community Banking) | Company Form 10-Q and earnings release |
| Assets under management | $2.33 trillion | $5.1 trillion | Company Form 10-Q and earnings release |
| Firmwide quarterly net income | $9,074M | $21,155M | Company Form 10-Q and earnings release |
JPMorganChase’s second-quarter 2026 result included a $4.6 billion net gain related to Visa shares and $1.0 billion of gains on certain equity investments, disclosed in its earnings release filed with the SEC. Excluding those, the firm reported $16.9 billion. We are not going to merge segment definitions across the two banks to produce a head-to-head branch productivity number: Bank of America’s Consumer Banking and JPMorganChase’s Consumer & Community Banking draw their boundaries differently, and averaging incompatible perimeters produces a figure that means nothing. Where the definitions align — total assets, firmwide net income, AUM — the table stands. Where they do not, we say so rather than manufacture comparability.
Bank of America Wealth Management and Investment Banking Statistics
Global Wealth & Investment Management reported $4.93 trillion in total client balances at June 30, 2026, up 12.3% from $4.40 trillion a year earlier. Assets under management reached $2.33 trillion, up 17.2%.

| Total sales and trading revenue | $7,098M | — | — | Bank of America Form 10-Q |
Percentage changes calculated by Axis Intelligence Research from the disclosed figures.
Investment banking fees rose 49.7% year over year, and equities sales and trading contributed $3.62 billion of the $7.10 billion trading result. Global Banking held $662.9 billion of period-end deposits.
Bank of America Workforce and Capital Return Statistics
Headcount stood at approximately 211,000 employees at June 30, 2026, down from 213,207 at December 31, 2025. Deposits per employee work out to $9.60 million on that basis.
On capital return: Bank of America repurchased $6.0 billion of common stock during the second quarter of 2026 under a $40 billion authorization, and on July 23, 2026 the board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.32 per share — a 14% increase on the prior quarterly dividend. Common shares outstanding were 6,992,748,365 at July 30, 2026.
Asset quality held steady: net charge-offs of $1.41 billion in the quarter, an annualized net charge-off ratio of 0.47%, and an allowance for credit losses of $14.26 billion.
Methodology
Collection. Every figure in this article traces to a document Axis Intelligence Research fetched and read on August 19, 2026. Primary sources are Bank of America Corporation’s Form 10-Q for the quarterly period ended June 30, 2026, its Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, and its Supplemental Information for the fourth quarter of 2025 (all filed with or furnished to the SEC); the FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile for the fourth quarter of 2025 and its Summary of Deposits filing notice; and JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s second-quarter 2026 earnings release filed with the SEC. No figure in this article is drawn from an aggregator, a secondary summary, or an estimate.
Formulas. Three Axis calculations appear above, each reproducible from rows in the accompanying dataset:
- Branch Deposit Intensity (BDI) = Consumer Banking average deposits (USD millions) ÷ period-end U.S. retail financial centers. Example, Q2 2026: 956,957 ÷ 3,530 = 271.1.
- Digital users per financial center = active digital banking users ÷ period-end U.S. retail financial centers. Example, Q2 2026: 49,834,000 ÷ 3,530 = 14,117.
- Share of U.S. banking industry net income = Bank of America full-year net income ÷ FDIC aggregate net income for all FDIC-insured institutions. 2025: 30,509 ÷ 295,600 = 10.32%.
All arithmetic was independently recomputed twice before publication, once in floating point and once in exact rational arithmetic, with matching results.
Scope. BDI uses Consumer Banking segment deposits, not total corporate deposits, because the branch network serves the consumer franchise; using the $2.03 trillion consolidated figure would attribute wholesale and trading deposits to retail buildings. Financial center counts are U.S.-only, matching the company’s disclosure. The digital client coverage figure of roughly 72% rests on a company-stated client count disclosed as an approximation and should be read as an upper bound. The industry share figure compares a bank holding company’s consolidated result to an insured-institution aggregate; the perimeters differ, and it is presented as a scale indicator. Comparative periods use quarterly averages for deposits against period-end branch counts, consistent across every reading, because that is how both figures are disclosed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a falling branch count mean Bank of America is losing deposit market share?
Not on the evidence through June 2026. Consumer Banking average deposits rose to $957.0 billion in the second quarter of 2026 from $952.0 billion a year earlier while the network shrank by 134 centers. Deposits grew and the denominator fell — which is exactly why Branch Deposit Intensity rose 4.34%. Bank of America’s 10-K also notes the company held more than 10% of total insured-institution deposits at June 30, 2025, the statutory ceiling for acquisitions, so consolidation is not available as a growth route in any case.
Why is Bank of America’s net interest yield below the industry net interest margin?
Bank of America’s net interest yield was 2.08% in the second quarter of 2026, against an industry NIM of 3.39% reported by the FDIC for the fourth quarter of 2025. The gap reflects balance sheet composition, not weak pricing. Trading account assets, securities borrowed and reverse repurchase agreements carry thin spreads and sit in the earning-asset base of a universal bank; a community bank’s earning assets are overwhelmingly loans. Comparing the two ratios without that adjustment produces a misleading conclusion.
Which is the right deposit number to cite for Bank of America — $2.03 trillion or $953 billion?
It depends on the claim. $2,025,124 million is total consolidated deposits at June 30, 2026 and is the correct figure for balance-sheet scale, funding, or liquidity discussion. $953,195 million is Consumer Banking period-end deposits and is the correct figure for anything about retail, branches, or household banking. Using the consolidated number in a branch-productivity calculation attributes corporate treasury and trading balances to retail locations.
How does deposit spread translate into Consumer Banking earnings?
Consumer Banking’s total deposit spread was 3.08% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 2.91% a year earlier. Applied across roughly $957 billion of average balances, 17 basis points of additional spread is the mechanism behind the segment’s net interest income rising to $9.21 billion and net income to $3.28 billion in the quarter. Deposit spread is the single most sensitive input in the consumer bank’s earnings model.
Is the shift to mobile complete, or is there still a branch-dependent cohort?
There is still a cohort. Active mobile users represent 84.4% of active digital users, and active digital users represent roughly 72% of the more than 69 million consumer and small business clients Bank of America reports serving. Roughly three in ten clients did not register as digitally active in the quarter. That is the population most exposed to a branch closure, and it is not visible in either the digital growth numbers or the branch count on its own.
Why did the ATM count rise while branches fell?
Bank of America reported a net increase of 35 ATMs alongside the net decrease of 134 financial centers in the year to June 30, 2026, ending the period with 14,939 branded machines. The fleet grew from 14,893 at December 31, 2024. Cash access and branch presence are separable, and the company is preserving the first while reducing the second — which also matters for how closures are assessed under community reinvestment scrutiny.
What would move Branch Deposit Intensity down?
Two things. Deposit outflow from the consumer franchise — to money market funds, higher-yielding alternatives, or competitors — with a stable branch count. Or a pause in closures while balances flatten. Bank of America’s 10-K explicitly flags large-scale deposit migration, including balances moving to non-bank platforms and digital assets, as a liquidity risk factor. A falling BDI would be the earliest quantitative signal that the risk had begun to materialize.
How reliable are the branch counts, and can they be checked independently?
The counts in this article are the company’s own disclosures in SEC filings, which carry certification requirements. They can be cross-checked against the FDIC’s Summary of Deposits, the annual survey of branch office deposits conducted as of June 30 each year, which collects office-level data from every FDIC-insured institution. The two are compiled on different bases — company reporting is by retail financial center, the FDIC survey is by branch office including limited-service locations — so exact reconciliation is not expected.
