Quick Answer

Minecraft has sold over 350 million copies worldwide as of April 2025 — confirmed by Mojang Studios and certified by Guinness World Records as the best-selling video game in history. The game counts approximately 212 million monthly active players in 2026, peaked at 222.5 million in June 2025, and generated $220 million in total revenue in 2024. A Minecraft Movie earned $961.2 million globally in 2025, the third-highest-grossing video game film adaptation ever made.

Key Findings

  1. Minecraft has sold over 350 million copies as of April 2025, confirmed by Mojang Studios in the official Minecraft Annual 2026 and certified by Guinness World Records — the only video game ever to cross this threshold.
  2. Monthly active players peaked at 222.5 million in June 2025, a record driven by A Minecraft Movie release and the Tricky Trials update; current 2026 MAU sits around 212 million.
  3. According to Axis Intelligence Research, Minecraft’s paid player base has grown 5.56x since 2016 — from 40 million to 222.5 million peak monthly active users — while copies sold expanded 3.5x over the same period, a compounding momentum no other single video game title has matched.
  4. A Minecraft Movie grossed $961.2 million globally (Warner Bros./Legendary, April 2025), setting the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game film adaptation ($313 million globally in its first three days) and triggering an 8.9% MAU surge from the 2024 annual average.
  5. Minecraft Education Edition is licensed to over 35 million students and educators across 115 countries, making it one of the most widely deployed educational software platforms globally, per Microsoft.

How Many Copies Has Minecraft Sold?

350 million. Mojang Studios confirmed that figure in the Minecraft Annual 2026, published April 2025, and Guinness World Records certified it as the best-selling video game in history. No other title — not GTA V, not Wii Sports, not Tetris on any single platform — has crossed this mark on verified paid sales.

The trajectory makes the achievement more remarkable than the headline number. Minecraft hit 100 million copies in 2016, seven years after launch. Then it added another 250 million in nine years, at a pace no older game should sustain.

The Pocket Edition (mobile) remains the largest single-platform contributor, with over 155 million copies sold through 2023 — roughly 44% of all paid sales as of that date. Console and PC split the remainder roughly equally. The $6.99 mobile price point explains why Minecraft’s average revenue per paid copy, calculated by Axis Intelligence Research, comes to approximately $12.00 (inputs: $4.2 billion in lifetime game-sale revenue ÷ 350 million copies — formula disclosed in the Methodology section).

That $12.00 blended figure, low as it sounds, still means $4.2 billion in direct sales alone — before in-game purchases, Marketplace content, Realms subscriptions, or licensing.

How Many People Play Minecraft in 2026?

The short answer is approximately 212 million monthly active players, with a peak of 222.5 million reached in June 2025. The longer answer requires distinguishing two very different datasets — because Mojang has not published a single unified global MAU figure since 2021.

Business of Apps (last updated January 7, 2026, citing multiple primary trackers) reports the following MAU series for editions excluding the China-specific version:

A separate set of aggregated tracking sources, including multiple platforms that compile daily active user data across all editions including Minecraft China (NetEase), shows a substantially higher figure — 204.33 million MAU average for full-year 2024, peaking at 222.5 million in June 2025. These figures appear consistently across co-op board games, Host Havoc, and multiple aggregators, all citing the same underlying China-inclusive methodology.

Both series are accurate; they measure different populations. The Business of Apps series excludes Minecraft China Edition, which operates as a separate free-to-play version under NetEase and adds hundreds of millions of registered users. When including China, the 2024–2025 figures jump by roughly 140 million.

This article reports both series clearly and separately, because combining them would produce a number that means something different from either.

The movie effect is measurable but not as dramatic as the headlines suggested. Axis Intelligence Research calculates that the June 2025 MAU peak represented an 8.9% lift from the 2024 full-year average (222.5M peak vs. 204.33M average — formula: (222.5 – 204.33) / 204.33 × 100 = 8.9%). A Minecraft Movie earned $961.2 million globally, but it moved existing Minecraft’s MAU needle by less than 10%. The game was already at its highest-ever non-China-inclusive player count before the film released.

How Much Revenue Does Minecraft Generate?

Minecraft generated an estimated $220 million in total revenue in 2024, according to Business of Apps (retrieved January 7, 2026). Mobile in-app purchases accounted for $115 million of that — 52% of the total, a figure Business of Apps attributes to AppMagic and Sensor Tower data.

The 2024 total is roughly 44% below the 2018 peak of $500 million. That comparison needs context before it reads as decline.

The 2018 peak was driven by the premium copy sales engine at its apex — a $26.99 PC price and $19.99 console price at peak volume. Post-2018, the model shifted: fewer new platform launches, a growing Marketplace ecosystem, and a user base that increasingly bought the game years earlier on mobile at $6.99 and now spends in-game rather than on new copies. Revenue normalized, but player engagement kept growing.

2024’s $115 million in mobile IAP is the clearest signal that the shift is working. Mobile in-app revenue was $88 million in 2018 at the total-revenue peak; it’s $115 million in 2024, when total revenue is 44% lower. The Marketplace and Realms subscriptions are generating more recurring revenue than ever — the headline annual figure is the wrong lens.

Lifetime revenue

Lifetime game-sale revenue across all platforms is estimated at approximately $4.2 billion, per Business of Apps citing The Verge. Broader lifetime earnings including mobile IAP, Marketplace cuts, merchandise, and licensing are estimated at $10–12 billion by multiple analysts. Microsoft paid $2.5 billion to acquire Mojang in 2014; on direct game-sale revenue alone, that investment returned approximately 1.68× before any other revenue stream.

The Minecraft Marketplace — the curated content store launched in 2017 — has distributed over $500 million cumulatively to creators, according to aggregated reporting from co-op board games citing Mojang disclosures.

Axis Intelligence Research Original Metric: Minecraft Franchise Momentum Index™ (MFMI)

No single metric captures the unusual trajectory of Minecraft as a franchise — its capacity to simultaneously grow paid copies sold, monthly active players, and cultural footprint 15 years after launch while generating a billion-dollar film. Axis Intelligence Research has developed the Minecraft Franchise Momentum Index™ (MFMI) to quantify this compounding effect.

Definition: MFMI measures the compound expansion of a video game franchise across three independent dimensions over a defined window.

Formula:

MFMI = (MAU_current_peak / MAU_base_year) × (Copies_current / Copies_base_year) × (Cultural_Revenue_M / 100)

Inputs (all sourced and logged):

Computation:

  • MAU growth ratio: 222.5 / 40 = 5.56×
  • Sales growth ratio: 350 / 100 = 3.50×
  • Cultural revenue factor: 961.2 / 100 = 9.612
  • MFMI = 5.56 × 3.50 × 9.612 = 187.1

Interpretation: An MFMI score of 187.1 reflects the fact that over nine years (2016–2025), Minecraft more than quintupled its active player base, tripled its total copies sold, and generated a $961 million film — simultaneously. For comparison, GTA V’s equivalent across the same window would produce a dramatically lower score: its MAU and copies-sold trajectories flattened well before the 2025 film comparison applies. A title with no cultural extension and flat MAU since 2016 would score close to 3–4 on this index.

Axis Intelligence Research estimates this as a metric for ongoing use as additional major gaming IPs produce film adaptations and decades-long community data becomes comparable. The formula and all inputs are disclosed above; any analyst can replicate this calculation from the cited sources.

This metric has not been published by Mojang, Microsoft, or any third-party research firm. It is an original Axis Intelligence Research cross-source calculation, licensed CC BY 4.0.

Minecraft Player Demographics: Who Actually Plays?

The popular image of Minecraft as a children’s game is only half right. The largest single demographic cohort is 15–21 year olds, who make up 43% of the player base — and Mojang Studios head Helen Chiang has confirmed that the average Minecraft player is 24 years old.

The 54%/32% split is more balanced than virtually any other major action or sandbox title. Combined with the 24-year average age, the demographics tell a different story than the brand’s educational reputation suggests: Minecraft’s sustained adult user base is the foundation of its Marketplace and Realms revenue.

Source: Host Havoc (retrieved July 10, 2026)

The US figure deserves emphasis: 45 million monthly American players means roughly 1 in 7 Americans plays Minecraft in a given month. Brazil’s 6.17% reflects Latin America as one of the fastest-growing regions by server traffic; the US, UK, and Germany are the three largest Western markets for the Bedrock Edition on mobile.

Minecraft China Edition (NetEase)

China operates as an entirely separate market. The localized free-to-play version, operated under Microsoft’s partnership with NetEase since 2016, crossed 800 million registered users in April 2025 — its fastest 100-million-user gain since the 700-million milestone in September 2023. These are registered accounts, not monthly active users, and the free-to-play model means monetization is in-app rather than copy sales — which is why China’s user base (800M registered) dwarfs even the global paid user count (350M copies sold) but contributes differently to revenue.

The China-registered users are not included in the 350 million paid copies sold figure.

Mobile leads by active player count, consistent with the platform’s premium copy sales dominance.

Platform Distribution of Active Players

The breakdown above reflects Bedrock Edition’s cross-platform dominance. Java Edition — the original PC version — maintains a dedicated audience but is the smallest segment by active users, despite being the modding community’s native environment.

Bedrock Edition runs on mobile, console, and Windows 10/11 Bedrock simultaneously, enabling cross-play that Java Edition does not support. That technical advantage has made Bedrock the larger platform by active users despite Java Edition launching first and retaining higher status within the modding and server community.

One technical data point worth noting: as of June 2025, Xbox Series X|S received the native Bedrock client (replacing the backward-compatible Xbox One version), completing platform parity across PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, mobile, and PC. Previous versions on older hardware had constrained world sizes and were excluded from some update features.

The 2021 peak of $161 million reflected pandemic-era spending. The 2024 figure of $115 million represents a stabilized baseline, with H1 2025 accelerating: mobile IAP revenue in Q1 2025 alone hit $42.3 million, a 34% year-over-year increase according to multiple tracking reports, driven by the movie release in April 2025.

Marketplace creator earnings

The Minecraft Marketplace — where creators sell maps, skins, and texture packs — has distributed over $500 million to creators cumulatively since its 2017 launch, based on Mojang disclosures cited across multiple aggregated sources. Over 97,000 paid items are available. The Marketplace’s first month of creator revenue was just $1 million; the cumulative $500 million over eight years represents one of gaming’s more successful creator economy experiments at scale.

A Minecraft Movie Box Office Statistics (2025)

The film was the single most significant external event in Minecraft’s 2025 data. A Minecraft Movie (Warner Bros./Legendary, directed by Jared Hess, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa) released in North American theaters on April 4, 2025.

The $162.8 million domestic opening weekend set the record for the highest opening weekend ever for a video game film adaptation, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s prior record. It also ranked as the third-highest April opening weekend in cinema history (behind two Avengers films) and the largest Warner Bros. April opening ever.

The film’s Rotten Tomatoes score of 47% critical approval — mixed reviews — had minimal effect on commercial performance. The audience score was substantially higher, and the cultural pre-existing affinity for Minecraft’s universe drove attendance independent of critical consensus.

A sequel, A Minecraft Movie Squared, is scheduled for July 23, 2027. The 2025 film’s performance effectively greenlit that project within weeks of release.

Minecraft on YouTube and Twitch

YouTube

Minecraft crossed 1 trillion total YouTube views in December 2021, confirmed by YouTube’s official data analysis, making it the first video game to reach that milestone. The YouTube community exceeds 35,000 identified creators across 150 countries. In 2020 alone, Minecraft content recorded over 201 billion views — still the highest single-year gaming view total ever recorded, per YouTube.

Total cumulative views had grown to an estimated 1.5 trillion as of early 2025, based on multiple tracker estimates, though YouTube has not published a second official milestone report.

Twitch

Minecraft consistently ranks in the top ten most-watched games on Twitch. Recent 30-day tracking averages approximately 54,000 concurrent viewers and 38 million watch hours per month. The all-time Twitch peak for Minecraft was approximately 1.9 million concurrent viewers in January 2022 — that figure tracks a specific event rather than sustained viewership, and has not been approached since.

The broader fragmentation of Twitch viewership since 2022 has affected Minecraft’s concurrent numbers more than its absolute watch hours, as longer-form streaming and YouTube Gaming have absorbed some audience that previously concentrated on Twitch.

Minecraft Education Edition Statistics

Minecraft Education Edition is licensed to over 35 million students and educators across 115 countries, per Microsoft’s stated figures (cited in multiple educational technology sources). The platform uses the Bedrock Edition codebase and requires a Microsoft 365 Education account.

Features specific to the Education Edition include: classroom-mode management for educators, code builder (supporting block-based coding, JavaScript, and Python), a camera and portfolio system for learning documentation, and NPC characters educators can program for in-world instruction.

80% of Minecraft Education students, according to Mojang-cited statistics reported across multiple educational sources, have used the coding features — a rare adoption rate for an integrated coding curriculum at this scale.

The Education Edition launched in 2016. It operates as a distinct business from the consumer versions and is priced at $5/user/year for verified educational organizations or $36/user/year for commercial licenses.

Minecraft Server Statistics

There are an estimated 2.6 million+ active community-run servers globally, with roughly 4,445 listed public servers in the United States — more than any other country. The server ecosystem is one of Minecraft’s most distinctive structural advantages: no other major sandbox game has generated a comparable breadth of player-managed infrastructure.

Official Mojang Realms subscriptions provide a managed alternative. Realms allow 10 concurrent players on a private server for approximately $7.99/month and are available across all Bedrock Edition platforms. Realms represent Minecraft’s subscription revenue stream, distinct from Marketplace IAP.

How Minecraft Compares to Other Best-Selling Games

For context on the GTA V statistics page, Axis Intelligence Research noted Minecraft at “300+ million” copies — that figure was accurate through October 2023 but has been superseded by the April 2025 Guinness certification at 350 million. The canonical registry figure updates to 350 million as of this publication.

Note: Tetris’ frequently cited aggregate figures combine multiple publishers and platform variations across 40 years; single-publisher paid-copy comparisons favor Minecraft.

The gap between Minecraft (350M) and GTA V (230M) is 120 million copies — equivalent to GTA V’s entire first nine years of sales. No other game is within 150 million copies of Minecraft’s paid total. See also our GTA franchise statistics for the full sales comparison across Rockstar’s library.

Methodology

Axis Intelligence Research assembled this dataset between July 9–10, 2026. All numerical claims correspond to a row in the downloadable CSV (see dataset below), which serves as the fact table for this article.

Source hierarchy used:

  1. Primary official disclosures: Guinness World Records (350M copies, April 2025); Microsoft product pages (Education Edition countries); YouTube official data (1 trillion views, December 2021); Forbes/Box Office Mojo via The Numbers (film financials); Business of Apps revenue tables (retrieved January 7, 2026).
  2. Aggregated tracking with methodology disclosed: Host Havoc, co-op board games, and multiple platforms that compile MAU data from Mojang-cited estimates and tracking APIs. These are labeled as “aggregated trackers” throughout; figures from this tier are approximate and carry wider error margins than Tier 1.
  3. Notes on MAU data: No single Mojang or Microsoft press release between 2022 and June 2026 published an authoritative global MAU figure. The 2024 and 2025 MAU numbers (204.33M average, 222.5M peak) derive from the China-inclusive aggregated tracking series. Business of Apps’ lower series (62M MAU in 2024) explicitly excludes China Edition. Both are accurate within their methodological scope. Readers should use the China-inclusive figures when discussing global engagement and the China-exclusive figures when comparing to Western-market-only titles.

Axis Intelligence Research original metric — MFMI™: The Minecraft Franchise Momentum Index (MFMI) formula, inputs, computation, and interpretation are fully disclosed in the dedicated section above. Inputs: MAU ratio (222.5M / 40M = 5.56); Sales ratio (350M / 100M = 3.50); Cultural revenue factor ($961.2M / $100M base = 9.612). MFMI = 5.56 × 3.50 × 9.612 = 187.1. This metric has not been published by any third party; the calculation is replicable from the cited sources.

Per-copy average revenue: Axis Intelligence Research cross-source calculation. Inputs: $4.2 billion lifetime game-sale revenue (Business of Apps citing The Verge) ÷ 350 million paid copies sold (Guinness World Records) = $12.00 average per paid copy. This blended figure reflects mobile’s dominance of the sales mix at the $6.99 price point, pulling the average below the $19.99–$29.99 console/PC price.

Movie MAU lift calculation: (222.5M June 2025 peak − 204.33M 2024 annual average) / 204.33M × 100 = 8.9% lift. Source figures: aggregated tracking (peak) and Business of Apps (2024 average, including China).

Limitations: Mojang does not publish monthly MAU as a discrete disclosure; all player count figures are estimates from aggregated tracking. Revenue figures for Microsoft’s gaming division are not broken out by title in official filings. The China Edition user counts are registered users, not monthly active users, and are not directly comparable to MAU figures.
