Apple sold 20.2% of the world’s smartphones in Q2 2026 but accounts for 32.35% of phones actually in use online. Axis Intelligence Research measures that distance as a Shelf-to-Screen Gap (SSG™) of −12.15 points — the widest of any brand we tracked, and the clearest sign that the brand that ships the most is not the brand people are holding.

Quick Answer

Samsung ships the most smartphones worldwide (22.7% of Q2 2026 shipments, IDC), but Apple leads phones in use (32.35% in August 2026, StatCounter). By country, Apple leads in-use share in 6 of the 10 markets in our panel, Samsung in 3 (Germany, Brazil, South Korea) and vivo in India.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research finds Apple’s worldwide Shelf-to-Screen Gap at −12.15 points: 20.2% of Q2 2026 shipments (IDC) versus 32.35% of phones in use in August 2026 (StatCounter).
  2. Axis Intelligence Research finds Huawei’s SSG in China at +11.57 points — 22.6% of Q2 2026 shipments (IDC) against 11.03% of in-use share (StatCounter, August 2026).
  3. Apple holds the top in-use share in 6 of 10 countries tracked by Axis Intelligence Research in August 2026; Samsung leads 3 and vivo leads 1.
  4. Transsion’s Tecno and Infinix brands together hold 32.42% of Nigeria’s in-use smartphones (StatCounter, August 2026), nearly double Apple’s 17.92%, according to Axis Intelligence Research.
  5. Japan is the most one-sided smartphone market Axis Intelligence Research tracked: Apple leads Google by 55.41 points in August 2026 in-use share.

Two Ways to Measure Smartphone Market Share — and Why They Disagree

Every “market share” number you have seen belongs to one of two families, and most pages mix them without saying so.

Shipment share counts new phones leaving factories into sales channels in a quarter. IDC, Omdia and Counterpoint publish it. It tells you who is winning today’s buyers.

In-use share counts which brands are generating web traffic in a month. StatCounter derives it from a network of more than 3 billion monthly page views. It tells you who owns the installed base — phones bought two, three, four years ago that are still being used.

The two measures answer different questions, and the gap between them is where the useful signal lives. That gap is the metric this page introduces.

Alex Rivera’s read: A shipment number is a snapshot of one quarter’s shelf. An in-use number is the accumulated result of every upgrade decision made over years. When they disagree, it usually means one brand’s phones stay in pockets longer — or get used harder — than another’s. That’s the real refresh-cycle story, and nobody publishes it country by country.

Which Smartphone Brand Leads in Each Country?

The table below ranks the top named vendor in each market by in-use share, August 2026. “Unknown” (traffic StatCounter cannot attribute to a vendor) is excluded from rankings but reported in the dataset.

Smartphone market share in the United States

Apple holds 60.68% of in-use smartphones in the United States, Samsung 21.97%, Xiaomi 4.32%, Motorola 4.1% and Google 2.65% (StatCounter, August 2026). The top two brands together hold 82.65% — a near-duopoly. See our iPhone vs Android market share analysis for the platform-level view.

Smartphone market share in the United Kingdom

Apple leads the United Kingdom at 51.47%, ahead of Samsung at 29.71%, Motorola at 4.09%, Xiaomi at 3.62% and Google at 3.38% (StatCounter, August 2026).

Smartphone market share in Germany

Germany is Europe’s Samsung stronghold: Samsung 36.83%, Apple 27.54%, Xiaomi 20.08% (StatCounter, August 2026). Xiaomi’s 20.08% is the highest Xiaomi in-use share among the Western markets in our panel — more than four times its US level (4.32%).

Smartphone market share in India

India is the only market in our panel with no brand above 18%. vivo leads at 17.67%, followed by Xiaomi 15.54%, Realme 12.54%, Samsung 11.86%, OPPO 10.96% and Motorola 9.36% (StatCounter, August 2026). On shipments, vivo also led Q2 2026 with 6.3 million units out of 33.9 million, ahead of Samsung’s 5.9 million, per Omdia.

Smartphone market share in China

Apple holds 28.5% of China’s in-use smartphones, Xiaomi 13.45%, Huawei 11.03%, vivo 7.47% and OPPO 5.2% (StatCounter, August 2026). China also carries the largest “Unknown” bucket in our panel at 21.03% — a scope note covered in the Methodology. On shipments, IDC puts Huawei first with 22.6% of Q2 2026 and Apple second at 18.1%.

Smartphone market share in Brazil

Samsung leads Brazil at 29.43%, Apple follows at 24.54%, and Motorola holds 20.87% (StatCounter, August 2026). Brazil is Motorola’s strongest market in our panel by a wide distance.

Smartphone market share in Indonesia

Apple is the top named brand in Indonesia at 22.87%, ahead of Samsung 13.34%, OPPO 12.14%, Xiaomi 10.01% and vivo 8.66% (StatCounter, August 2026). Unattributed traffic is 23.3%, the highest in the panel alongside China.

Smartphone market share in Nigeria

Nigeria has the closest race in our panel: Apple 17.92%, Tecno 17.34%, Samsung 16.28%, Infinix 15.08% (StatCounter, August 2026). Tecno and Infinix are both Transsion brands; combined, they reach 32.42%.

Smartphone market share in Japan

Apple holds 64.74% of Japan’s in-use smartphones. Google is second at 9.33%, Samsung 5.01%, Xiaomi 3.94%, Sony 3.21% (StatCounter, August 2026). Japan is the one market in our panel where Google Pixel, not Samsung, is the leading Android brand — a pattern detailed in our Google Pixel statistics.

Smartphone market share in South Korea

Samsung holds 48.21% at home, Apple 35.5% (StatCounter, August 2026). The top two account for 83.71%, the highest two-brand concentration in our panel.

Alex Rivera’s read: Look at the leader-margin column, not the leader. The US and Japan aren’t competitive markets in any consumer sense — switching is the exception. Nigeria and India are the opposite: a 0.58-point and a 2.13-point lead mean a single strong launch season can reorder the top of the table. If you sell accessories, cases or apps, those two numbers tell you where brand loyalty is still up for grabs.

Who Ships the Most Smartphones Worldwide in 2026?

Global shipments fell 7.4% year over year to 276.3 million units in Q2 2026, according to IDC’s final data released August 28, 2026.

What Is the Shelf-to-Screen Gap (SSG™)?

The Shelf-to-Screen Gap (SSG™) is an original Axis Intelligence Research metric that measures how far a brand’s share of new sales sits from its share of phones in use in the same market.

SSG™ = shipment share (latest quarter, %) − in-use share (latest month, %)

Result is in percentage points.

  • Negative SSG — the brand’s installed base outweighs its current sales. Phones are kept longer, used harder, or resold into second lives. It is a sign of a sticky base, and a warning that sales momentum may lag reputation.
  • Positive SSG — the brand is selling faster than it shows up in daily use. Typical of a brand gaining ground (its base has not yet caught up) or of budget devices that generate less web traffic per unit.
  • Near zero — sales and usage are in balance.

Worked example: Huawei in China — 22.6 − 11.03 = +11.57 points.

Alex Rivera’s read: Apple’s −12.15 worldwide is the price-per-year-of-use argument showing up in the data. An iPhone bought in 2022 is still browsing in 2026, so Apple’s installed base keeps swelling even in quarters when it isn’t the top seller. Huawei’s +11.57 in China reads the other way: Huawei is winning buyers now, but years of lost share mean its base hasn’t caught up. If the gap holds for a few more quarters, expect Huawei’s in-use number in China to climb — that’s the reading to watch. India’s Samsung reading, +5.54, says the same thing about Samsung’s recovery there.

One caution on China: StatCounter cannot attribute 21.03% of Chinese mobile traffic to a vendor, and some HarmonyOS devices may sit inside that bucket. Huawei’s true in-use share is therefore likely above 11.03%, which would shrink its SSG. We publish the reading with that scope stated rather than guessing a correction.

Which Countries Are the Most Concentrated Smartphone Markets?

The top-two share (sum of the two largest named brands, in-use, August 2026) shows how much room is left for everyone else.

8Indonesia36.21%Axis calc. from StatCounter
9Nigeria35.26%Axis calc. from StatCounter
10India33.21%Axis calc. from StatCounter

The ranking sorts neatly by income: high-income markets are two-brand markets, while India, Nigeria and Indonesia remain fragmented, multi-brand contests. Worldwide, the top two (Apple and Samsung) hold 52.07% of in-use share.

Alex Rivera’s read: Fragmentation is where the memory crisis will bite hardest. IDC’s data shows the entry-level brands losing volume fastest, and those are exactly the brands that make India, Nigeria and Indonesia so fragmented. If entry-level supply keeps thinning, expect those three markets to start climbing this concentration table in 2027.

Methodology

Collection. Axis Intelligence Research fetched every figure on September 25, 2026 from primary publishers:

  • In-use share: StatCounter Global Stats, mobile vendor market share, August 2026, for Worldwide and 10 countries (US, UK, Germany, India, China, Brazil, Indonesia, Nigeria, Japan, South Korea). StatCounter bases these on page views across its tracking network; they reflect active devices weighted by browsing, not unit counts.
  • Worldwide shipments: IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Q2 2026 final data (August 28, 2026).
  • China shipments: IDC China Q2 2026 preliminary data (July 14, 2026) and Omdia (July 14, 2026).
  • India shipments: Omdia, Q2 2026 (July 21, 2026). Shares derived by Axis as vendor units ÷ 33.9 million total.

Formulas.

  • SSG™ = shipment share − in-use share (percentage points).
  • Leader margin = #1 named vendor in-use share − #2 named vendor in-use share.
  • Top-two share = sum of the two largest named vendor in-use shares.
  • Countries led = count of the 10 panel countries in which a vendor has the highest named in-use share.

Scope. “Unknown” traffic is reported but excluded from rankings. StatCounter publishes the top six vendors per market on its summary view; brands below that line (e.g., Apple in India) are not ranked here. Shipment data covers a quarter (April–June 2026) while in-use data covers one month (August 2026); SSG compares a flow to a stock by design. Brand groupings differ between sources: IDC’s China OPPO figure includes OnePlus and realme, while StatCounter lists Realme separately — so OPPO has no SSG reading in this edition. Counts across IDC, Omdia and Counterpoint differ by methodology; we never mix two firms in one comparison row.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Apple or Samsung sell more phones worldwide in 2026?

Samsung. IDC’s final Q2 2026 data gives Samsung 62.7 million shipments (22.7%) against Apple’s 55.7 million (20.2%). But Apple leads phones in use, with 32.35% of worldwide in-use share versus Samsung’s 19.72% (StatCounter, August 2026).

Why is Apple’s in-use share so much higher than its sales share?

Because in-use share reflects every iPhone still in service, not just this quarter’s sales. Axis Intelligence Research measures the difference as a Shelf-to-Screen Gap of −12.15 points worldwide, the largest of any brand tracked — consistent with iPhones staying in use longer and being browsed more heavily.

Which country has the highest iPhone share?

Of the 10 countries in our panel, Japan: Apple holds 64.74% of in-use smartphones there (StatCounter, August 2026), followed by the United States at 60.68% and the United Kingdom at 51.47%.

Where is Samsung the number one smartphone brand?

In our panel, Samsung leads in-use share in South Korea (48.21%), Germany (36.83%) and Brazil (29.43%), per StatCounter, August 2026. On shipments, Samsung also led the world in Q2 2026 (IDC).

Is Huawei gaining market share in China?

Yes, on sales. IDC shows Huawei at 22.6% of China’s Q2 2026 shipments, up from 18.1% a year earlier, with shipments up 19.4%. Its in-use share (11.03%) is still far below that, giving an SSG of +11.57 points — a sign its installed base should keep growing if sales hold.

Which smartphone brand leads in Africa’s largest market?

In Nigeria, Apple is the single top brand at 17.92%, but Transsion’s Tecno (17.34%) and Infinix (15.08%) together hold 32.42% of in-use smartphones (StatCounter, August 2026, Axis calculation).

Why do IDC, Omdia and StatCounter report different market shares?

They measure different things. IDC and Omdia count new units shipped into channels during a quarter; StatCounter measures which devices generate web page views in a month. Each firm also defines brands and regions differently, so figures should only be compared within one source.

What is the most competitive smartphone market?

Nigeria, by leader margin: Apple leads Tecno by just 0.58 points. India follows, with vivo 2.13 points ahead of Xiaomi and no brand above 18% (StatCounter, August 2026).
