Axis Intelligence Research projects about 6.03 billion social media user identities by October 2027 in its base case, the first year the count clears 6 billion. The milestone hides the two shifts that matter more: Asia and Africa now supply most of the growth, and laws in force on November 1, 2026 put 7.9% of the world’s population behind a national social media age gate.
Quick Answer
Social media keeps growing in 2027, slowly and unevenly. DataReportal counted 5.81 billion social media user identities in October 2026, up 2.7% in a year. Axis Intelligence Research’s base case puts October 2027 near 6.03 billion (range 5.96 to 6.09 billion). Southeastern Asia grew 23.1% while Northern America grew 5.5%, and teen access is shrinking under new age laws.
Key Findings
- Axis Intelligence Research projects 6.03 billion social media user identities worldwide in October 2027 in its base case, within a range of 5.96 billion to 6.09 billion.
- Axis Intelligence Research calculates that 7.9% of the world’s population lived under a national social media minimum-age law in force on November 1, 2026, rising to about 8.8% when the UK rules start in spring 2027.
- Asia accounted for 62.3% of the regional social media gains DataReportal reported for the year to October 2026, and Northern America for 4.3%, per Axis Intelligence Research analysis.
- Indonesia added 60 million social media user identities in the year to October 2026 (+33.3%), more than any country except India (+73 million), per DataReportal.
- Generative AI platforms added users 21 times faster than social media in the year to October 2026: 57.2% growth against 2.7%, per DataReportal.

How Many People Will Use Social Media in 2027?
About 6 billion user identities, if the last two years are a guide. DataReportal’s Digital 2027 report, published October 21, 2026, counted 5.81 billion social media user identities, equal to 69.9% of the world’s population. A year earlier the count was 5.66 billion.
“User identities” is DataReportal’s term, and it matters. The figure is built from each country’s largest platform ad audience, so it can include duplicate and business accounts. It is not a headcount of unique humans. That is why Saudi Arabia shows identities equal to 127% of its population and the United Arab Emirates 117%.
The Axis Base Case for October 2027
The Axis Base Case starts from DataReportal’s October 2026 total and applies two drivers.
Formula: Identities (Oct 2027) = 5.81 billion × (1 + organic growth) − age-gate drag
- Organic growth. DataReportal reported 4.8% growth in the year to October 2025 and 2.7% in the year to October 2026, and attributes part of the slowdown to Meta purging accounts from its ad-reach data. Our base case uses the midpoint, 3.75%.
- Age-gate drag. Turkey’s under-15 rule took effect November 1, 2026, and the UK’s under-16 rules are due in spring 2027. Both fall inside the forecast window. We estimate the newly gated cohort at 4.8 million people (Turkey ages 13 to 14, UK ages 13 to 15) from World Bank population data, and assume half of it drops out of the count in the base case.
| Scenario | Organic growth | Share of newly gated teens removed | Age-gate drag | Identities, Oct 2027 | Share of population |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downside | 2.7% | 100% | 4.83 million | 5.96 billion | 71.1% |
| Base | 3.75% | 50% | 2.41 million | 6.03 billion | 71.9% |
| Upside | 4.8% | 25% | 1.21 million | 6.09 billion | 72.6% |

When does social media pass 6 billion? On the base growth rate, about 10.5 months after October 2026, so around September 2027. At last year’s slower pace it slips to around December 2027; at the 2025 pace it arrives around June 2027.
Sensitivity. One percentage point of organic growth moves the 2027 total by 58.1 million identities. Removing every newly age-gated teen in Turkey and the UK moves it by 4.8 million. The global count is a story about emerging-market growth and platform data hygiene, not about age laws.
Alex Rivera: If your deck says “social media is saturated,” it’s half right. In the US the user base stopped moving years ago. Globally, our base case still adds more than 200 million identities by October 2027. The question for 2027 isn’t whether people join. It’s whether the people joining are worth anything to an advertiser yet, and right now most of them aren’t.
Which Countries Have the Most Social Media Users?
China, India, Indonesia and the United States lead, and the fastest growth sits well outside that top four’s mature half.
| Country | Social media user identities, Oct 2026 | Change in a year | Share of population |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | 1.28 billion | +0.3% | 90.8% |
| India | 573 million | +14.6% (+73 million) | 38.7% |
| United States | 268 million | +5.5% | 76.7% |
| Indonesia | 240 million | +33.3% (+60 million) | 83.2% |
| Brazil | 154 million | +2.7% | 72.0% |
| Mexico | 112 million | +13.0% | 83.9% |

Fastest-growing large markets
Among countries with at least 20 million identities, the fastest growth in the year to October 2026 came from Myanmar (+53.4%), Indonesia (+33.3%), Kenya (+30.2%), Nigeria (+28.3%), Vietnam (+26.3%), Thailand (+24.2%) and Malaysia (+23.8%).
Only a handful of countries shrank: the Philippines (−1.1%) and Turkey (−2.0%) are the largest. DataReportal warns that source revisions can distort country change figures, so a one-year dip is not proof of people leaving.
Where the next billion users are
Penetration is lowest in East and Central Africa: social media user identities equal 3.7% of Uganda’s population, 7.3% of Ethiopia’s and 11.8% of Tanzania’s and the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s. Eastern Africa as a region sits at 14.1% and Middle Africa at 13.8%, against 77.6% in Northern America.

Where Is Social Media Growing Fastest?
In Southeastern Asia, Africa and Latin America. DataReportal’s regional figures for the year to October 2026:
| Region | Identities, Oct 2026 | Growth | Share of population |
|---|---|---|---|
| Southeastern Asia | 601 million | +23.1% (+113 million) | 85.1% |
| Western Africa | 108 million | +20.7% | 22.6% |
| Southern Africa | 38.2 million | +17.5% | 50.9% |
| Middle Africa | 31.4 million | +17.5% | 13.8% |
| The Caribbean | 27.9 million | +15.2% | 62.3% |
| Eastern Africa | 74.5 million | +14.6% | 14.1% |
| Central America | 151 million | +14.2% | 80.4% |
| Southern Asia | 814 million | +12.8% (+92 million) | 38.5% |
| Central Asia | 41.8 million | +12.0% | 49.0% |
| Northern Africa | 135 million | +10.5% | 48.0% |
| Western Asia | 222 million | +7.6% | 75.5% |
| Southern America | 339 million | +7.6% | 76.8% |
| Oceania | 30.4 million | +6.7% | 64.4% |

| Southern Europe | 116 million | +5.1% | 77.5% |
| Western Europe | 163 million | +5.1% | 81.7% |
| Eastern Europe | 208 million | +2.9% | 73.3% |
| Eastern Asia | 1.46 billion | +0.5% | 88.7% |

Axis calculation: who supplied the growth? Of the regional gains DataReportal reports, Asia accounts for 62.3%, Africa 13.9%, Latin America and the Caribbean 12.5%, Europe 6.5%, Northern America 4.3% and Oceania 0.5%. One caution: the regional changes add up to 372.9 million, while DataReportal’s world total rose by 151 million. DataReportal flags that revisions in source data distort change figures, so read these shares as a direction, not as a reconciled ledger.
Company filings say the same thing
| Platform | North America / US | Europe | Rest of World | Period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snapchat daily users | 92 million (−7%) | 98 million (−2%) | 303 million (+12%) | Q2 2026 vs Q2 2025 |
| Pinterest monthly users | 107 million (+4%) | 161 million (+7%) | 394 million (+13%) | Q3 2026 vs Q3 2025 |

Sources: Snap Q2 2026 8-K; Pinterest Q3 2026 8-K; Reddit Q3 2026 shareholder letter.
Snapchat added 24 million daily users in a year; Rest of World contributed 32 million while North America lost 6 million. Pinterest drew 47 of its 61 million net new monthly users, or 77%, from Rest of World markets.
Why the growth is worth less than it looks
The users are arriving where ARPU (average revenue per user) is lowest.
| Platform | ARPU, North America / US & Canada | ARPU, Rest of World | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snapchat (Q2 2026) | $10.26 | $1.00 | 10.3× |
| Pinterest (Q3 2026) | $8.38 | $0.23 | 36.4× |
Axis Intelligence Research calculation from company filings.
A platform can post record users and flat revenue at the same time when new users sit in markets where an impression sells for a fraction of a US one. Pinterest’s Q3 2026 shows it: users up 10%, revenue up 12%, global ARPU up 1% to $1.80.

TikTok’s biggest markets
TikTok does not publish user counts by country. Its adult ad audience, reported by DataReportal from TikTok’s ad tools, is the closest public measure. These figures date from October 2025 because DataReportal’s 2027 country reports start publishing in mid-November 2026.
| Country | TikTok ad reach, adults 18+, late 2025 |
|---|---|
| Indonesia | 180 million |

| France | 23.4 million |
| Australia | 10.9 million |

In the US, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC was established on January 23, 2026, with ByteDance keeping a 19.9% stake. The company says the venture serves more than 200 million Americans and 7.5 million businesses; both figures are company-reported.
Alex Rivera: Meta’s Q3 is the clearest preview of 2027. Daily people grew 3%. Ad impressions grew 10%. Price per ad grew 14%. When the audience barely grows, the ad load and the auction do the work. For anyone buying Reels or Stories inventory next year, that means paying more per eyeball, not reaching more eyeballs.
How Much Time Do People Spend on Social Media in 2027?
More than last year. GWI data published by DataReportal puts the typical internet user at 19 hours and 18 minutes a week on social media and online video platforms in Q2 2026, about 2 hours 45 minutes a day. That is 42 minutes a week more than a year earlier, a 3.8% rise.
GWI revised its time-spent questions this year and now combines social platforms with video services like YouTube and TikTok. Compare it with older “time on social” numbers only with that in mind.
- Filipino internet users spend more than 36 hours a week on social and video feeds.
- Twelve countries average more than 24 hours a week.
- Online video (12 h 5 min a week) now beats all forms of TV combined (9 h 58 min).
Similarweb’s August 2026 estimates, cited by DataReportal, put average daily use per user at 1 hour 55 minutes for TikTok, 1 hour 40 minutes for Instagram, 1 hour 28 minutes for YouTube and 59 minutes for Facebook.
For country and platform breakdowns, see our time spent on social media statistics, which use an earlier, narrower definition.
How Do Gen Z, Millennials and Older Adults Use Social Media Differently?
Age decides which app, not whether. The sharpest divides are in intensity.
Teens (13 to 17, United States)
Pew Research Center’s survey of 1,458 US teens (September 25 to October 9, 2025) found:
| Platform | Use daily | Use “almost constantly” |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 61% | 21% |
| 55% | 12% | |
| Snapchat | 46% | 12% |
| 20% | 3% |
Thirty-six percent of teens are almost constantly on at least one of five major platforms. TikTok’s “almost constant” share rose from 16% in 2022 to 21%. Instagram use climbs steeply inside the teen years: 75% of 15- to 17-year-olds use it, against 44% of 13- and 14-year-olds. That gap is exactly the band most age laws now target.
The competitor teens adopted fastest isn’t a social app: 64% of US teens use AI chatbots, according to the same survey.
Adults (United States)
Pew’s 2026 fact sheet (n = 5,511, January 30 to June 18, 2026) shows a market at a standstill:
| Platform | US adults who ever use it, 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 84% | flat |
| 70% | flat | |
| 51% | flat | |
| TikTok | 37% | flat vs 2025 (21% in 2021) |
| 33% | +1 pt | |
| Snapchat | 26% | +1 pt |
| 25% | −1 pt | |
| X | 18% | down from 23% in 2021 |
TikTok’s US adult reach rose from 21% in 2021 to 37% in 2025 and then stopped. X is the only major platform clearly shrinking in Pew’s data. Age gaps remain wide: 80% of 18- to 29-year-olds use Instagram against 19% of adults 65 and older, and 5% of adults 65 and older use TikTok daily.
Globally
Social platforms are where younger people research purchases. GWI finds 46.9% of internet users aged 16 to 24 use social networks for brand research, the top channel for that group, against 41.8% across all adults. Social media ads are the third channel for brand discovery overall, cited by 30.4% of online adults.

Which Countries Ban Social Media for Minors, and What Changes in 2027?
Five countries had a national social media minimum-age law in force on November 1, 2026. The UK follows in spring 2027, and the EU has a proposal under consultation.
| Country | Minimum age | In force | What the law requires | Legal source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | 16 | December 10, 2025 | Platforms must take reasonable steps to stop under-16s holding accounts | eSafety Commissioner |
| Brazil | 16 | March 17, 2026 | Accounts of users up to 16 linked to a legal guardian’s account | Law 15.211/2025, Art. 24 and 41-A |
| Indonesia | 16 | Signed March 6, 2026; rollout from March 28 | Ages 13–15 limited to low-risk services, with parental consent | Ministerial Regulation 9/2026 |
| Malaysia | 16 | June 1, 2026 | Registration only from 16, checked against government records; existing users verified over up to six months | MCMC statement |
| Turkey | 15 | November 1, 2026 | Social network providers may not serve under-15s; age verification required | Law 7578, Official Gazette 33240 |
| United Kingdom | 16 | Spring 2027 (scheduled) | Under-16s barred from certain social media | UK Government fact sheet |
| France | 15 | Struck down August 14, 2026 | Ban found disproportionate | Conseil constitutionnel, decision 2026-911 DC |
| European Union | 13 (ban); 15 for own accounts | Proposal, September 17, 2026 | EU KIDS Act: platforms barred from accessing under-13s, own accounts from 15; consultation open until December 3, 2026 | European Commission |
The EU KIDS Act is a Commission proposal; it must pass the European Parliament and Council before it applies.
Axis calculation: how much of the world is now age-gated?
Axis Intelligence Research summed the 2024 populations of countries with a national law in force, using World Bank data.
- In force, November 1, 2026: 643.8 million people, 7.9% of the world’s population.
- Account bans only (excluding Brazil’s guardian-link model): 5.3%.
- With the UK in spring 2027: 8.8%.
- If the EU KIDS Act applied across all 27 members: 14.3%. A scenario, not a forecast; the Act is a proposal.
Do age bans reduce social media users?
Not in national totals, so far. In the year to October 2026, social media user identities rose 33.3% in Indonesia, 23.8% in Malaysia and 7.6% in Australia, all countries where a ban took effect during that period, per DataReportal. Turkey’s −2.0% predates its November 2026 rule.
Two reasons this isn’t a contradiction. DataReportal’s identity figure is built from the largest platform’s ad audience, which for most platforms excludes young teens anyway. And restrictions remove accounts, not people: Australia’s platforms removed or restricted about 4.7 million accounts by mid-December 2025, and blocked more than 300,000 more by early March 2026, according to the eSafety Commissioner, which also found many under-16s kept access.
Axis Intelligence Research estimates about 5.2 restricted accounts for every Australian aged 13 to 15. The ratio is inflated by under-13 accounts and multi-platform use, but it shows why a ban can delete millions of accounts and barely move a country’s user count.
Litigation is the other regulator
Meta agreed in August 2026 to pay up to about $18.59 billion to resolve teen mental health litigation with 52 US state attorneys general, and booked a $9.89 billion charge in Q3 2026. Its filing says more youth-related trials are scheduled in the US in the coming months.
Policy detail by country: social media regulation statistics.
Alex Rivera: For brands that sell to teenagers, plan 2027 as if under-16s in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey and the UK are unreachable through logged-in social accounts, because legally they’re supposed to be. The national user counts won’t warn you: they kept rising. Budget for the law, not for the loophole.
How Much Money Will Social Media Make in 2027?
More, but the growth rate is in dispute, and the disagreement is the useful number.
| Forecaster | 2026 social ad spend | 2026 growth | 2027 view | Published |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WARC Media | $394.6 billion | +21.3% | No public 2027 social figure; total ad market +8.4% to $1.46 trillion | October 7, 2026 |
| WPP Media | not public | — | Growth slows to single digits from 2027 | June 16, 2026 |
Both forecasters keep their full 2027 channel tables for clients. Figures here are from their public pages.
WPP Media names three headwinds: time spent with social platforms expected to plateau or decline, age-related access restrictions, and AI chatbots emerging as competing platforms. The near-term data cuts against an abrupt slowdown: time spent rose 3.8% this year and Meta’s ad revenue grew 26% in Q3 2026. But WPP Media’s three headwinds are all measurable on this page, and the age-gate figures show how the second one could start to bite in 2027.
The filings point to where 2027 revenue comes from:
- Price, not volume, at Meta. Average price per ad +14%, impressions +10% (Q3 2026).
- Subscriptions. Snap’s “other revenue,” mostly subscriptions, grew 84.7% to $316.5 million in Q2 2026, 19.8% of Snap’s revenue. YouTube Music and Premium passed 150 million subscribers, including trials.
- Smaller platforms out-growing the giant. Reddit’s revenue grew 53% in Q3 2026; YouTube’s ad revenue grew 9.2%.
For the whole ad market, see our digital marketing trends 2027 outlook; for the advertiser side, social media marketing statistics and Instagram ads statistics.
Is AI Replacing Social Media?
Not replacing, but outgrowing. DataReportal counted 3.24 billion active generative AI platform users in October 2026, up 57.2% in a year, while social media identities grew 2.7%. Google said its Gemini app reached 1 billion users in its Q3 2026 release.
AI is also reshaping the feed. Meta tells investors its AI investments are lifting engagement and ad monetization. Among US teens, 64% already use chatbots and 40% say they are online almost constantly, so the two now compete for the same minutes.
How social teams use AI tools: AI in social media statistics. The agent build-out: AI agents trends.
Why Do Social Media User Counts Disagree?
Because each source counts something different. Name the measure when you quote “the number of social media users.”
| Measure | Value | What it counts | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social media user identities | 5.81 billion (Oct 2026) | Largest platform ad audience per country; may include duplicates | DataReportal |
| Meta daily active people | 3.64 billion (Sep 2026) | Logged-in people visiting a Meta app on a given day | Meta |
| Online adults using social or messaging monthly | 97.1% (Q2 2026) | Survey of internet users aged 16+ | GWI via DataReportal |
| US adults using YouTube | 84% (2026) | Survey of US adults | Pew Research Center |
The two largest counts sit 1.6 times apart. One is monthly identities, the other daily people. Axis Intelligence Research does not merge them, and neither should a forecast.
What Could Change This Outlook?
Downside triggers. Another Meta account purge in ad-reach data would cut DataReportal’s growth rate again, as it did in 2026. Faster enforcement of age laws, or the EU KIDS Act moving quickly, would raise the drag.
Upside triggers. Connectivity gains in Southern Asia and Africa pushing identity growth back toward 2025’s 4.8%. DataReportal itself expects global adoption to pass 70% in early 2027, barring further data purges.
Signals to watch: Snap’s Q3 2026 results (early November 2026); DataReportal’s 2027 country reports (from mid-November 2026); the EU KIDS Act consultation closing December 3, 2026; the UK’s age-gate regulations ahead of the spring 2027 start; Meta’s Q4 2026 results (late January 2027).

Every figure was fetched from its producer between October 31 and November 1, 2026: company filings (Meta, Snap, Pinterest, Reddit via SEC Form 8-K; Alphabet’s earnings release; TikTok’s newsroom), DataReportal’s Digital 2027 report and Country Headlines deck (which carry GWI survey and Similarweb estimates), DataReportal’s Digital 2026 country reports for platform ad reach, Pew Research Center surveys, official legal texts (Brazil’s Law 15.211/2025, Indonesia’s Ministerial Regulation 9/2026, Turkey’s Official Gazette, France’s Conseil constitutionnel, the European Commission’s KIDS Act proposal), statements by Australia’s eSafety Commissioner and Malaysia’s MCMC, the UK Government, WPP Media and World Bank population data. WARC’s 2027 social channel rate, reported in the press, does not appear in WARC’s public release and was left out.
Base case. Identities (Oct 2027) = 5.81 billion × (1 + g) − drag. Base g = 3.75%, the mean of DataReportal’s two most recent annual growth rates. Drag = (Turkey ages 0–14 × 2/15 + UK ages 0–14 × 3/15) × removal rate. The 2/15 and 3/15 shares assume single-year cohorts of equal size. Australia, Brazil, Indonesia and Malaysia are already reflected in the October 2026 base.
Age-gated population share. Sum of 2024 World Bank populations for countries with a national minimum-age law in force, divided by world population. Subnational laws (such as US state laws) are excluded.
Regional shares. Each region’s net change divided by the sum of regional net changes in DataReportal’s deck (372.9 million). That sum does not match the reported global change (151 million).
Limitations. User identities are not unique people, and DataReportal warns that revisions to source data can distort year-on-year changes. Company regional data covers Snap, Pinterest and Reddit only. Similarweb time figures cover mobile apps only and exclude China. TikTok country figures are adult ad audiences from late 2025.
Grade-back commitment. Axis Intelligence Research will compare this base case with DataReportal’s October 2027 count, and the 2028 edition of this page will open with that comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions
What will social media look like in 2027?
Bigger, more Asian and African, and more restricted for teenagers. Axis Intelligence Research projects about 6.03 billion user identities by October 2027, growth is fastest in Southeastern Asia (+23.1% in the latest year), and 7.9% of the world’s population already lives under a national social media age limit.
How many people use social media in 2026?
DataReportal counted 5.81 billion social media user identities in October 2026, or 69.9% of the world’s population. The figure may include duplicate accounts, so the number of unique people is lower.
Will social media reach 6 billion users?
Yes, most likely during 2027. The Axis base case crosses 6 billion around September 2027; on last year’s slower growth it would slip to around December 2027.
Which country has the most social media users?
China, with 1.28 billion social media user identities in October 2026, followed by India (573 million), the United States (268 million) and Indonesia (240 million), per DataReportal.
Which countries are growing fastest on social media?
Among large markets: Myanmar (+53.4%), Indonesia (+33.3%), Kenya (+30.2%), Nigeria (+28.3%) and Vietnam (+26.3%) in the year to October 2026. By volume, India (+73 million) and Indonesia (+60 million) added the most.
Which countries have banned social media for kids?
As of November 1, 2026:
- Account bans: Australia (under 16), Indonesia (under 16, high-risk platforms), Malaysia (under 16), Turkey (under 15).
- Guardian link: Brazil (accounts up to 16 tied to a parent).
- Coming: the UK (under 16, spring 2027).
- Struck down: France (under 15, August 14, 2026).
Do social media bans actually reduce users?
Not in national totals so far. Indonesia’s identities rose 33.3%, Malaysia’s 23.8% and Australia’s 7.6% in the year their bans began. Bans remove accounts (about 4.7 million in Australia by mid-December 2025), and many teens hold several accounts each.
Why do some countries have more social media users than people?
Because DataReportal counts user identities, not people. Duplicate accounts, business pages and visitors inflate the figure, which is why Saudi Arabia shows 127% of its population and the UAE 117%.
Is TikTok still growing?
In usage time, yes; in US reach, no. TikTok leads all apps in time per user at about 1 hour 55 minutes a day (Similarweb estimate), but Pew found US adult use flat at 37% in 2025 and 2026.
Is social media usage declining?
No. Time on social and video platforms rose 3.8% to 19 hours 18 minutes a week (GWI via DataReportal), and global identities grew 2.7%. What is slowing is the US: X fell to 18% of US adults in 2026 from 23% in 2021.
