The world will ship about 626 million wearables in 2026, yet strip out earbuds and the market shrinks. Axis Intelligence Research’s analysis of IDC’s 2026 category forecasts finds that hearables supply 124% of net unit growth, while watches, bands, glasses and rings combined fall 1.4%. For every wrist device the market loses, smart glasses and rings replace only 60 cents of it.

Quick Answer

Global wearable shipments reached 145.7 million units in Q1 2026, up 4.3% year over year, according to IDC’s Worldwide Wearable Device Tracker. IDC’s 2026 category forecasts sum to 626.0 million units. According to Axis Intelligence Research, the Wrist Displacement Ratio (WDR) stands at 0.60: smart glasses and rings will add 4.54 million units in 2026 while smartwatches and wristbands lose 7.53 million.

Key Findings

  1. According to Axis Intelligence Research, hearables account for 124% of 2026 net wearable unit growth, based on IDC’s category forecasts; every other form factor combined shrinks.
  2. Axis Intelligence Research calculates a Wrist Displacement Ratio (WDR) of 0.60 for 2026: new face and finger devices offset 60% of the units the wrist loses.
  3. Smartwatch units fell 4.2% in Q2 2026 (IDC) while Garmin’s fitness revenue rose 25% (Form 10-Q), a 29.2-point value-volume spread identified by Axis Intelligence Research.
  4. Oura sold 3.6 million rings in the 12 months to June 30, 2026, per its SEC Form S-1; Axis Intelligence Research estimates that equals 0.6% of all wearables shipped.
  5. 41.1% of US adults used a wearable in 2024, up from 30.2% in 2020 (HINTS, JAMA Network Open), matching the EU’s identical 10.9-point gain over the same period.

How Many Wearables Will Be Shipped in 2026?

IDC counted 145.7 million wearable devices shipped worldwide in Q1 2026, a 4.3% increase on Q1 2025. For the full year, IDC publishes five category forecasts rather than a single headline total, so Axis Intelligence Research summed them.

Shares and the total are Axis calculations on IDC inputs.

The sum is internally consistent with IDC’s long-range view. IDC forecasts 693.2 million wearable shipments in 2030 at a 2.6% compound annual rate from 2026. Working that backward (693.2 / 1.026^4) gives a 2026 base of 625.6 million, within 0.07% of the 626.0 million category sum. Axis Intelligence Research treats that reconciliation as confirmation that the category forecasts and the five-year total describe the same market.

Which wearables are growing and which are shrinking?

Dividing each 2026 forecast by one plus its growth rate recovers the implied 2025 base, and the difference is the unit change. That arithmetic exposes the shape of the year:

Earbuds add 15.68 million units against a net market gain of 12.7 million. Remove the ear and the remaining categories go from 221.4 million to 218.4 million units, a 1.4% contraction.

Alex Rivera’s take: The industry still talks about wearables as a wrist story, and the wrist is the one place the units are leaving. Most of the growth sits in earbuds, the lowest-commitment purchase in the category. The interesting money is somewhere else, and the next two sections show where.

What Is the Wrist Displacement Ratio (WDR)?

The Wrist Displacement Ratio (WDR) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric that measures how much of the wrist’s lost volume new body locations recapture. It answers a question every product planner and component supplier is asking in 2026: are glasses and rings replacing the smartwatch, or just decorating its decline?

Formula: WDR = (unit gain of smart glasses + smart rings) / (unit loss of smartwatches + wristbands), using IDC’s annual forecasts and growth rates.

2026 reading: (3.98M + 0.56M) / (4.60M + 2.93M) = 4.54 / 7.53 = 0.60

How to read it:

  • WDR below 1.0: the wrist is shedding more units than face and finger devices are adding. The non-ear market is contracting.
  • WDR equal to 1.0: displacement is unit-for-unit. Category mix shifts without shrinking.
  • WDR above 1.0: new form factors are expanding the non-ear market faster than the wrist declines.

According to Axis Intelligence Research, the 2026 WDR of 0.60 means smart glasses and rings recapture 60% of the units smartwatches and bands give up. Glasses do almost all of that work: 3.98 million of the 4.54 million units gained.

Beyond-Wrist Share (BWS): the companion reading

WDR measures flow. Beyond-Wrist Share (BWS) measures the stock: glasses and rings as a share of all non-ear wearables.

YearGlasses + ringsAll non-ear wearablesBWSSource
2025 (implied)13.96M221.4M6.3%Axis calculation on IDC
2026 (forecast)18.5M218.4M8.5%Axis calculation on IDC

According to Axis Intelligence Research, BWS rises 2.2 points in a single year while the non-ear market itself shrinks. Smart glasses alone are forecast to roughly double to 27.3 million units by 2030, which IDC describes as a compound rate of roughly 19%.

Alex Rivera’s take: A WDR of 0.60 is not a collapse story. It is a hand-off that has not finished. Glasses are doing the catching, which tells you the buyer moving off the wrist wants a camera and audio on their face, not another health tracker. The detailed glasses picture, including Meta’s share, lives on our smart glasses statistics page.

Are Smartwatch Sales Declining in 2026?

In units, yes. IDC forecasts 159.7 million smartwatches in 2026, down 2.8%, and attributes the pressure to memory-related supply constraints that keep average selling prices elevated. Quarterly data shows the turn:

QuarterSmartwatch unitsYoYWristband unitsYoYSource

Q2 202637.08M-4.2%10.92M-4.7%IDC (via TechNode)

Total wrist-worn shipments went from 47.05 million in Q1 (+2.2%) to 48.01 million in Q2 (-4.3%). IDC expects wristbands to stabilize near 39 million units annually by 2028. Brand-level smartwatch share, health accuracy data and pricing are covered in depth in our smartwatch statistics report.

Is the smartwatch market shrinking in revenue too?

No, and this is the most underreported number in the category. The vendors that file with the SEC are growing revenue while the unit count falls.

AppleWearables, Home and Accessories, nine months$27,277M$26,673M+2.3%Apple Form 10-Q

Apple’s growth rate is an Axis calculation; the filing rounds it to 6%. Garmin’s fitness unit reached 37% of company revenue in Q2 2026, up from 33% a year earlier, and grew 42% in Q1 2026 to $546.8 million, per its Q1 results exhibit.

According to Axis Intelligence Research, the value-volume spread between Garmin’s fitness revenue growth (+25.0%) and global smartwatch unit growth (-4.2%) reached 29.2 percentage points in Q2 2026. The two figures measure different things, one a single vendor’s dollars and one an industry’s units, so the spread is a directional signal of premiumization rather than a market-size estimate.

Alex Rivera’s take: The cheap end of the wrist is being hollowed out by memory costs, and the expensive end is fine. If you are coming from an older fitness band, the replacement that pulls you forward is no longer another band. Garmin’s numbers say buyers are spending up for a training watch instead.

Who Leads the Wearables Market in 2026?

Apple holds the largest share of all wearable units globally, earbuds included, according to IDC.

According to Axis Intelligence Research, the top five vendors held 52.0% of units in Q1 2026, down from 54.2% in Q1 2025: the long tail is gaining, not consolidating. In smartwatches alone, IDC puts Apple at 21.5% in Q1 2026, ahead of Huawei at 18% and Xiaomi at 9.9%. Apple’s dedicated breakdown sits in our Apple Watch statistics report.

How Big Is the Smart Ring Market in 2026?

IDC forecasts 4.9 million smart rings shipped in 2026, up 12.8%, rising to about 6.3 million by 2030. The category’s anchor, Oura, filed its Form S-1 with the SEC on September 3, 2026, and the filing is the most detailed public dataset on any wearable business.

Oura’s “2% of wearables” claim, checked

The S-1 states Oura represented about 2% of global wearable shipments, citing an IDC base of approximately 212 million units over the 12 months to June 2026. That base cannot include earbuds: IDC counted 145.7 million wearables of all types in a single quarter. According to Axis Intelligence Research, 212 million sits close to IDC’s 218.4 million non-ear forecast for 2026, so the S-1’s share is a share of non-ear wearables.

  • Against that 212 million base, 3.6 million rings equal 1.7% (Axis calculation; the S-1 rounds to approximately 2%).
  • Against IDC’s 626.0 million all-category forecast, Axis Intelligence Research estimates Oura’s share at 0.6%. The periods differ (trailing 12 months vs calendar 2026), so this is an estimate.

Does Oura sell most of the world’s smart rings?

The public numbers point that way, but they do not reconcile cleanly, so Axis Intelligence Research publishes them side by side rather than merging them. Oura’s trailing 12-month ring sales of 3.6 million equal 73% of IDC’s full-year 2026 ring forecast of 4.9 million. Oura’s fiscal 2025 sales of 2.3 million rings equal 53% of the 4.34 million ring market implied for calendar 2025. Oura counts rings recognized as revenue on a September fiscal year; IDC counts calendar shipments into channels. Both definitions are sound. They are not the same measurement.

Alex Rivera’s take: The ring business is really a subscription business with jewelry attached. Membership grew 121% while revenue per ring slipped to $311. And 33% of new Oura members say it is their first wearable, while 37% wear it alongside another device. That is the WDR story in miniature: rings are mostly adding to the body, not replacing the watch.

How Many People Use Wearables?

Shipments count devices; surveys count people. The two best public surveys come from the US federal HINTS program and Eurostat.

Population20202024ChangeSource
US adults using a wearable device30.2%41.1%+10.9 ppHINTS via JAMA Network Open
EU residents aged 16 to 74 using smart wearables19%29.9%+10.9 ppEurostat 2024, Eurostat 2020

The Yale-led analysis of 17,395 HINTS respondents represents 262 million US adults in 2024. According to Axis Intelligence Research, 41.1% of that population equals about 107.7 million American adults using a wearable. Both regions gained exactly 10.9 points over 2020 to 2024, but the survey questions differ (US: any wearable device; EU: internet-connected wearables used in the last three months), so the levels should not be compared directly.

Who uses wearables by age?

Eurostat’s 2020 baseline showed 28% of Europeans aged 16 to 24 using smart wearables against 5% of those aged 65 to 74. In 2024, 70.9% of EU residents used at least one internet-connected device of any kind, peaking at 94.8% in the Netherlands.

The adoption curve has a clinical gap behind it. Of US wearable users, 73.4% say they would share data with a clinician, but only 19.2% have. That last-mile problem, and the Axis index that tracks it, is the subject of our connected health statistics report.

How Do Earbuds Compare to Smartwatches in 2026?

Ear-worn devices shipped 96.13 million units in Q2 2026, up 5.4%, according to IDC data reported by Zhitong Finance. Against 48.01 million wrist-worn devices in the same quarter, the ear-to-wrist ratio is 2.00, according to Axis Intelligence Research: the world now ships two ear devices for every wrist device. IDC credits AI assistants, real-time translation and biometric sensing in earwear for its 4.0% hearables growth forecast.

What Did the FDA Change for Wearables in 2026?

On January 6, 2026, the FDA reissued its General Wellness: Policy for Low Risk Devices guidance. The revision addresses non-invasive wearables that estimate physiologic parameters such as blood pressure, oxygen saturation, glucose and heart rate variability, and describes when those outputs can qualify as general wellness features rather than regulated medical device functions. The practical effect for the category: health features can ship faster when marketed strictly for wellness, while any disease or diagnostic claim still triggers device regulation. Our digital health statistics report covers the clinical-grade side of the market.

Wearable Technology FAQ

Is the wearable market still growing in 2026?

Yes, but only because of earbuds. IDC’s category forecasts sum to 626.0 million units in 2026, about 2.1% above the implied 2025 level. Axis Intelligence Research finds that hearables deliver 124% of that growth; watches, bands, glasses and rings combined decline 1.4%.

Will smart glasses replace smartwatches?

Not in 2026. Smart glasses are forecast at 13.6 million units against 159.7 million smartwatches, per IDC. The Axis Wrist Displacement Ratio of 0.60 shows glasses and rings recapturing only 60% of the units the wrist loses this year.

Why are smartwatch shipments falling while Garmin and Apple grow?

Memory supply constraints are pushing average selling prices up, which IDC says softens replacement demand in price-sensitive segments. Premium buyers keep spending: Garmin’s fitness revenue grew 25% in Q2 2026 while global smartwatch units fell 4.2%.

How many smart rings does Oura sell?

Oura sold 3.6 million rings in the 12 months to June 30, 2026, and 3.1 million in the nine months to that date, according to its SEC Form S-1. Revenue per ring averaged $311.

What share of Americans own a wearable device?

41.1% of US adults used a wearable device in 2024, per nationally representative HINTS data published in JAMA Network Open. Axis Intelligence Research estimates that equals about 107.7 million adults.

Which company sells the most wearables?

Apple, with 18.1% of global wearable units in Q1 2026, followed by Xiaomi at 11.4% and Huawei at 10.6%, according to IDC. In wrist-worn devices alone, IDC ranked Huawei first in Q2 2026.

How many wearables will ship by 2030?

IDC forecasts 693.2 million wearable shipments in 2030, a 2.6% compound annual growth rate from 2026. Smart glasses are the fastest-growing category, projected at about 27.3 million units by 2030.

Can a smartwatch measure blood pressure legally in the US?

Under the FDA’s January 2026 General Wellness guidance, non-invasive wearables may estimate blood pressure as a wellness feature if the output is solely for wellness use and makes no disease or diagnostic claim. Diagnostic claims still require FDA marketing authorization.

Methodology

Collection. Axis Intelligence Research assembled this dataset between September 30 and October 1, 2026, from primary sources: IDC’s public Wearable Devices Market Insights page (updated July 2, 2026), SEC filings by Apple (Form 10-Q, quarter ended June 27, 2026), Garmin (Form 10-Q and Q1 8-K exhibit), and Oura (Form S-1, September 3, 2026), the HINTS-based study in JAMA Network Open, Eurostat’s ICT household surveys for 2020 and 2024, and the FDA guidance docket FDA-2014-N-1039. IDC’s Q1 and Q2 2026 wrist-worn and Q2 ear-worn figures were available only through press coverage of IDC releases; those rows are attributed to IDC and flagged is_primary = no in the CSV.

Formulas.

  • Implied 2025 base = 2026 forecast / (1 + 2026 growth rate)
  • Unit change = 2026 forecast minus implied 2025 base
  • Wrist Displacement Ratio (WDR) = (glasses gain + rings gain) / (smartwatch loss + wristband loss)
  • Beyond-Wrist Share (BWS) = (glasses + rings) / (smartwatches + wristbands + glasses + rings)
  • Value-volume spread = vendor revenue growth minus industry unit growth, same quarter
  • Ear-to-wrist ratio = ear-worn units / wrist-worn units, same quarter

Scope. IDC growth rates are published rounded to one decimal, so implied 2025 bases carry a small rounding margin (the five-category sum reconciles to IDC’s 2030 path within 0.07%). WDR uses forecasts, not shipped actuals, and will be re-read when IDC publishes full-year 2026 data. Oura ring counts and IDC ring shipments use different definitions and fiscal calendars and are never merged. Vendor revenue figures are company-reported and not unit-comparable.
