Prices verified on October 6, 2026. Every plan price on this page was read from the carrier’s live plan page or FCC broadband label that day. Carriers change prices without notice; re-check before you switch.

Axis Intelligence Research finds the median unlimited plan on T-Mobile and Verizon costs $78.45 per line per month for a single line once AutoPay, carrier fees and activation are counted, versus $35.00 per line on Verizon- and AT&T-network value brands at four lines, as of October 6, 2026.

Quick Answer: How Much Does a Cell Phone Plan Cost per Month in 2026?

An unlimited cell phone plan costs $25 to $105.95 per line per month in October 2026 on Axis Intelligence Research’s All-in Line Rate (ALR-24). The median across 9 single-line unlimited plans is $45.00. A family of four pays a median $51.51 per line on T-Mobile, Verizon or AT&T, and $35.00 on Visible or Cricket.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research finds the median single-line ALR-24 on T-Mobile and Verizon unlimited plans is $78.45 per month, as of October 6, 2026.
  2. Advertised AutoPay prices understate the real per-line cost by up to 23.6%, on AT&T Value 2.0 at four lines, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s Advertised-to-All-in Gap (AAG).
  3. A four-line family pays a median $51.51 per line on T-Mobile, Verizon or AT&T versus $35.00 on Visible and Cricket, per Axis Intelligence Research’s October 2026 price sweep.
  4. T-Mobile’s own FCC broadband label lists its Regulatory Programs and Telco Recovery Fee as $5.49 per line in the header and $4.49 in the itemized footnote, as retrieved October 6, 2026.
  5. The CPI communication index rose 2.3% in August 2026, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in its September 11, 2026 release.

What Is the All-in Line Rate (ALR-24)?

The All-in Line Rate over 24 months (ALR-24) is Axis Intelligence Research’s metric for what one phone line actually costs per month once the carrier’s own add-ons are counted. It answers the question no plan page answers directly: what does each line cost me, before government taxes, after the fees the carrier itself chooses to charge?

ALR-24 = (plan total after AutoPay ÷ lines) + carrier per-line monthly fee + (one-time activation fee ÷ 24)

Three rules make it comparable across carriers. AutoPay is assumed on, using a bank account or debit card, because that is the only payment method that earns the full discount at all three national carriers. Only fees the carrier sets go in: T-Mobile’s Regulatory Programs and Telco Recovery Fee, AT&T’s Administrative/Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee, Verizon’s Regulatory Charge. Government taxes and surcharges, which vary by address, stay out. Activation is spread across 24 months, a typical holding period for a line.

Where a brand quotes a taxes-and-fees-included price (Visible, Cricket), ALR-24 equals the sticker. That makes those readings slightly higher in relative terms than the postpaid ones, which still exclude taxes. The postpaid numbers below are floors.

The companion metric: Advertised-to-All-in Gap (AAG)

AAG = (ALR-24 − advertised AutoPay per-line price) ÷ advertised price × 100. It measures how far the number in the ad sits from the number on the bill, before tax.

Cell Phone Plan Cost Estimator

The interactive estimator on this page uses the same ALR-24 formula as the tables above. Choose a carrier and plan (prices preloaded from the dataset), set your line count (1–5), payment method (bank, debit, credit card) and holding period (12–36 months). It returns your ALR-24, the AAG versus the advertised price, and your total household cost over the period, with an optional field for your local tax rate.

T-Mobile figures are the “Monthly Price” on each plan’s FCC broadband label, which states it excludes AutoPay. Verizon’s page advertises $30/line “after AutoPay and $15/mo switch discount”; the standard AutoPay rate, without the switcher credit, is therefore $45. AT&T’s public plans page displays only the four-line rate; NA means no price was published without entering a service address.

Two things stand out. Visible and Cricket print a tax-included price on their FCC labels, so the sticker is the bill. And their per-line price is flat: a single line costs the same as each of five. The postpaid carriers sell the opposite structure, where the first line is expensive and lines four and five are cheap.

Verizon’s Simplicity plan is the outlier among the national carriers. Its per-line Regulatory Charge is $0.21, against $4.49 at T-Mobile and up to $4.99 at AT&T, and Verizon’s page lists activation fees as eliminated. The result is a near-zero AAG: what Verizon advertises at AutoPay is very close to what the line costs before tax. Verizon has already posted that the charge rises to $0.26 per line on November 1, 2026, which moves the ALR-24 by five cents.

Source: Axis Intelligence Research. 24-month household cost = ALR-24 × 4 lines × 24. AT&T fee inputs use the published maximums ($4.99/line, $50 activation), so AT&T readings are ceilings for fees and floors for tax.

The pattern a family should take from this table: the cheaper the plan, the bigger the share eaten by fees. A $4.49 fee on a $100 line is noise. On a $30 line it is a 15% surcharge before activation. That is why the two cheapest postpaid family plans in the sweep, AT&T Value 2.0 and T-Mobile Essentials 2.0, carry the two widest gaps between ad and bill — and why both end up costing more per line than Visible+ and Cricket Select at four lines, plans with fully included taxes.

How Much Does Each Additional Line Save?

On T-Mobile Essentials 2.0, the ALR-24 drops from $65.95 for one line to $50.95 for two, $40.95 for three, $35.95 for four and $32.95 for five. Line two alone cuts the per-line cost by 22.7%; line five saves only another 8.3% versus four. On Verizon Simplicity, Visible and Cricket, the per-line price does not move with line count at all — the multi-line discount has been priced into line one.

So the line-count question has a clean answer. A single user saves the most by leaving postpaid; a household of four or more is where T-Mobile Essentials and AT&T Value become competitive with prepaid on price, if not on what the plan includes.

What Moves Your Cell Phone Bill?

How you pay. T-Mobile’s $5-per-line AutoPay discount applies only to a bank account, debit card or the T-Mobile Visa, per T-Mobile’s AutoPay terms. AT&T pays $10 per line for bank account or its Citi card, $5 for debit, and nothing for other credit cards, per its plan disclosures. Paying a four-line AT&T account with a regular credit card adds $40 a month.

Carrier “recovery” fees. These are carrier charges, not taxes. Verizon states plainly on its surcharge page that its Administrative and Telco Recovery Charge is retained by Verizon and is not a government fee.

The first-year promo. Verizon’s $30 Simplicity price and Mint’s $30 three-month intro both depend on being a new or switching customer. ALR-24 uses the price an existing customer pays, because that is the price you live with.

Prices in general are rising. The BLS August 2026 CPI release shows the communication index up 2.3% in a single month. BLS switched its wireless service measurement to carrier-sourced plan data in 2025, so month-to-month swings in this series are larger than they used to be.

How to Pick a Cell Phone Plan Without Overpaying

Start with your line count, not the plan name. Then run the ALR-24 formula — or use the estimator on this page — with your real payment method. Three practical rules fall out of the data:

  • One or two lines, own your phone: Visible, Cricket or Mint beat every national-carrier plan in the sweep on ALR-24. Verizon Simplicity at $45.21 is the cheapest way to stay with a big-three carrier.
  • Four or more lines: T-Mobile Essentials 2.0 ($35.95) and AT&T Value 2.0 ($37.07) come close to prepaid, but Value 2.0 includes 5GB of high-speed data before slowdowns, per AT&T, and Essentials includes 50GB, per T-Mobile. Check what you actually use.
  • Premium plans: the price gap between AT&T Elite 2.0 and T-Mobile Experience Beyond 2.0 is $6.12 per line at four lines. Choose on coverage and perks, not price.

Your Cell Phone Plan Questions, Answered

Is $100 a month a lot for one phone line in 2026?

Yes, at the high end. Only T-Mobile Experience Beyond 2.0 exceeded $100 on ALR-24 ($105.95) in Axis Intelligence Research’s October 6, 2026 sweep; the single-line median was $45.00.

Why is my phone bill higher than the advertised price?

Advertised prices assume AutoPay with an eligible payment method and exclude carrier fees and taxes. Axis Intelligence Research measured gaps of up to 23.6% before tax on postpaid family plans.

Does adding a line always lower the price per line?

Only on tiered plans. On T-Mobile, per-line ALR-24 falls with each line; on Verizon Simplicity, Visible and Cricket it stays flat from one to five lines, as of October 2026.

Are prepaid plans really cheaper once taxes are included?

Often, yes. Visible and Cricket labels state government taxes are included, so their $25–$45 prices are full bills, while postpaid ALR-24 readings still exclude tax.

Will T-Mobile’s price lock protect me from fee increases?

T-Mobile labels list a 5-Year Price Guarantee on Experience plans. Its fee disclosure says the Regulatory and Telco Recovery Fee is subject to change without notice, so check the guarantee’s scope.

Which payment method gets the biggest AutoPay discount?

A bank account. AT&T gives $10 per line for bank or Citi card versus $5 for debit; T-Mobile gives $5 per line for bank, debit or its Visa, and nothing for other cards.

Methodology

Axis Intelligence Research retrieved every price on October 6, 2026 from carrier plan pages and their FCC broadband labels: T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, Visible, Mint Mobile and Cricket Wireless. We selected each carrier’s current unlimited smartphone plans available to new customers bringing their own phone. Fee inputs come from the same labels or the carrier’s own fee disclosures. Where AT&T publishes a fee as a maximum (“up to $4.99”, activation “up to $50”), we used the maximum.

ALR-24 and AAG formulas are stated above. Medians are simple medians of plan readings at a given line count: 9 single-line readings and 12 four-line readings. For T-Mobile, the broadband label header lists the fee at $5.49 per line while its footnote itemizes $0.50 + $3.99 = $4.49; we used the itemized $4.49. Using $5.49 would raise every T-Mobile ALR-24 by $1.00. Promotional switcher credits, device financing, insurance, and add-on lines for watches and tablets are excluded.
