Barclays reported £16,501m of income and £6,066m of profit before tax for the six months to 30 June 2026, a return on tangible equity of 14.8% and a CET1 ratio of 14.3%. Axis Intelligence Research finds that the entire year-on-year increase in group net interest income came from the bank’s structural hedge, not from customer lending margin.
Quick Answer
Barclays PLC generated £16,501m in income and £6,066m in profit before tax in H1 2026, up 11% and 17% respectively on H1 2025, with attributable profit of £4,191m and earnings per share of 30.7p (Barclays PLC Form 6-K, filed with the SEC, 28 July 2026). The Investment Bank supplied £7,986m of that income — 48.6% of the five operating divisions’ combined total, on Axis Intelligence Research’s calculation.
The number that has not been published anywhere else: Axis Intelligence Research’s Structural Hedge Dependency Ratio (SHDR) for Barclays reached 45.1% in H1 2026, up from 39.6% a year earlier. The hedge contributed £678m more than it did in H1 2025, while total group net interest income rose only £636m — meaning the hedge accounted for more than 100% of the increase.
Key Findings
- Barclays PLC reported income of £16,501m and profit before tax of £6,066m for the six months ended 30 June 2026, per its Form 6-K furnished to the SEC on 28 July 2026.
- Axis Intelligence Research’s Structural Hedge Dependency Ratio (SHDR) for Barclays reached 45.1% in H1 2026, compared with 39.6% in H1 2025.
- Gross structural hedge contributions rose £678m year-on-year while total group net interest income rose £636m, leaving the residual — all other net interest income — £42m lower than a year earlier, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s calculation from Barclays’ filed figures.
- Barclays UK held £176.7bn of mortgage balances at 30 June 2026 against a UK market total of £1,746.1bn at 31 March 2026, an Axis Intelligence Research estimated share of approximately 10.1%, up from an exactly matched 9.8% at 30 June 2025.
- The Prudential Regulation Authority scored Barclays PLC at 291 on its 2025 list of UK-headquartered global systemically important institutions, the bank’s highest score in the five annual disclosures since 2021 and 41 points above its 2021 reading of 250.
How Much Money Does Barclays Make?
Barclays runs on two engines that rarely fire together. One is a UK deposit-and-lending franchise whose income moves with the Bank Rate and the shape of the sterling curve. The other is a markets and advisory business whose income moves with volatility and deal flow. H1 2026 was the unusual half where both ran hot.
Group income of £16,501m was 11% higher than H1 2025. Profit before tax rose 17% to £6,066m. Attributable profit — the figure that actually reaches ordinary shareholders — rose 19% to £4,191m, and earnings per share rose 24.3% to 30.7p. The gap between those last two growth rates is the buyback: Barclays retired 4.75% of its shares over twelve months, ending June 2026 with 13,507m shares in issue against 14,180m a year earlier.

Barclays Full-Year 2025: Axis Intelligence Research Reconstruction
Barclays publishes quarterly results in a rolling eight-quarter table rather than restating a clean annual line in its interim filings. Axis Intelligence Research summed the four filed 2025 quarters from that table to produce full-year figures, then reconciled them a second way through the income-minus-costs-minus-impairment chain. Both routes return the same profit before tax.
| Full-year 2025 metric | Value | Derivation |
|---|---|---|
| Total income | £29,140m | Q1 £7,709m + Q2 £7,187m + Q3 £7,167m + Q4 £7,077m |
| Net interest income | £14,501m | Q1 £3,517m + Q2 £3,505m + Q3 £3,745m + Q4 £3,734m |
| Profit before tax | £9,139m | Q1 £2,719m + Q2 £2,484m + Q3 £2,077m + Q4 £1,859m |
| Attributable profit | £6,175m | Q1 £1,864m + Q2 £1,659m + Q3 £1,457m + Q4 £1,195m |
Inputs: Barclays PLC quarterly results summary, Form 6-K, 28 July 2026. Calculation: Axis Intelligence Research. Cross-check: £29,140m income − £17,745m total operating expenses + £23m other net income − £2,279m credit impairment charges = £9,139m.
Sarah Davis: The 2025 shape matters more than the 2025 total. Q4 2025 profit before tax was £1,859m against Q2 2026’s £3,252m — the same bank, six months apart, earning three-quarters more. Anyone modelling Barclays off a single quarter is modelling the weather, not the climate. The eight-quarter series is the only honest unit of analysis here, which is why we published it rather than the headline.
Where Does Barclays’ Net Interest Income Actually Come From?
Here is the question almost nobody asks about a bank that just grew net interest income 9%: grew it from what?
Barclays runs a structural hedge — a rolling portfolio of receive-fixed, pay-variable interest rate swaps designed to smooth net interest income across the rate cycle. At 30 June 2026 the structural hedge derivatives notional stood at £239.8bn with an average duration of around 3.5 years. Each month a slice matures and reinvests at prevailing market rates. When the maturing slice was struck in a lower-rate era, the roll is accretive, and net interest income rises without a single new customer.
That is exactly what happened in the first half of 2026.
The Structural Hedge Dependency Ratio (SHDR)
SHDR — Structural Hedge Dependency Ratio. An Axis Intelligence Research metric expressing gross structural hedge contributions as a percentage of total group net interest income for a stated reporting period.
Formula:
SHDR = (Gross structural hedge contributions ÷ Group net interest income) × 100
Both inputs are disclosed by Barclays in the same filing, which makes the reading fully reproducible by any reader with the document open.
| Period | Gross structural hedge contributions | Group net interest income | SHDR | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H1 2026 | £3,456m | £7,658m | 45.1% | Barclays PLC Form 6-K, 28 Jul 2026 |
| H1 2025 | £2,778m | £7,022m | 39.6% | Barclays PLC Form 6-K, 28 Jul 2026 |
Calculation: Axis Intelligence Research. H1 2026: 3,456 ÷ 7,658 = 45.13%. H1 2025: 2,778 ÷ 7,022 = 39.56%. Snapshot date 30 June 2026.
The year-on-year movement is where the reading earns its keep. Group net interest income rose £636m. Gross structural hedge contributions rose £678m. Subtract the hedge contribution from group net interest income and the residual — every other source of net interest income Barclays earns — comes to £4,202m in H1 2026 against £4,244m in H1 2025. A decline of £42m.
Axis Intelligence Research finds that 100% of Barclays’ H1 2026 group net interest income growth is attributable to the structural hedge, with the residual from all other sources falling £42m year-on-year.
Two things this does not mean. It does not mean Barclays’ lending business shrank — UK lending balances grew 5% and Barclays UK net interest margin widened 15bps to 3.70%. And it does not mean the hedge is a trick; it is standard, disclosed, prudent balance-sheet management that every large UK bank runs. What the reading does establish is where the marginal pound of interest income came from, and the answer is a swap book, not a customer.
Sarah Davis: Follow a bank’s net interest income far enough and you eventually reach either a borrower or a derivative. Barclays discloses both numbers on the same page and almost nobody puts them next to each other. The reason the spread matters is timing — a 3.5-year average duration means today’s income is priced off rates set in 2022 and 2023. The hedge is not a forecast. It is a memory. When the roll finally laps the peak, the SHDR will fall on its own, and the residual line is the one worth watching between now and then.
Scope of the SHDR
Barclays defines gross structural hedge contributions as the absolute interest income earned on the fixed legs of the swaps, with the floating leg offset by the base-rate funding of the deposits. The residual figure Axis Intelligence Research derives is therefore an arithmetic remainder, not a Barclays-reported line item, and it should be read as such. The SHDR is a disclosure-dependent metric: it can only be computed for banks that publish gross structural hedge contributions, which not all of Barclays’ peers do.
How Is Barclays’ Revenue Split by Division?
Barclays reports five operating divisions plus Head Office. The Investment Bank is by a wide margin the largest, and its share of divisional income did not move at all year-on-year.

Shares calculated by Axis Intelligence Research across the five operating divisions (£16,423m H1 2026), excluding Head Office, which is a residual reporting centre rather than a customer-facing business.
Run a Herfindahl-Hirschman calculation across those five divisional shares and Barclays scores 3,350 in H1 2026 against 3,373 in H1 2025 — a move of 22 points on a 10,000-point scale. In plain terms, the revenue mix is where it was a year ago.
The one visible shift is the US Consumer Bank, from 11.4% to 12.9% of divisional income. Strip out the roughly £225m gain on the sale of the American Airlines co-branded card portfolio and that share falls to 11.7%. Most of the move is a disposal, not a franchise.

Equities did the work. FICC, historically Barclays’ signature franchise, was flat at £3,187m — and flat against a strong comparative, which the bank was careful to note. The 67% jump in advisory fees off a £266m base is a real recovery in deal flow, but it is a recovery measured from a weak half, and the base effect deserves stating before anyone extrapolates it.

The Investment Bank consumed 55.9% of group risk weighted assets at 30 June 2026 while returning 15.5% — the lowest divisional return in the group. Barclays’ own 2028 target is to bring the Investment Bank down to around 50% of group risk weighted assets. It has moved the wrong way since December 2025, when the share was 55.1%, on higher Global Markets activity.
How Big Is Barclays in the UK Mortgage Market?
Barclays UK held £176.7bn of mortgage balances at 30 June 2026, up from £166.8bn a year earlier — growth of 5.9%. Gross mortgage lending flow reached £17.7bn in the half against £15.4bn in H1 2025.
The market denominator comes from the Bank of England’s Mortgage Lenders and Administrators Return, a quarterly aggregation of data from around 370 regulated mortgage lenders and administrators, published jointly with the Financial Conduct Authority.
| Date | Barclays UK mortgage balances | UK total outstanding residential mortgages | Axis-calculated share | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 Jun 2025 | £166.8bn | £1,707.1bn | 9.8% | Exact date match |
| 30 Jun 2026 | £176.7bn | £1,746.1bn (31 Mar 2026) | ~10.1% | Estimate; denominator one quarter earlier |
Sources: Barclays PLC Form 6-K, 28 July 2026 (numerator); Bank of England MLAR Table A, published 9 June 2026 (denominator). Calculation: Axis Intelligence Research.
The June 2025 reading is exact — the MLAR series carries a 2025 Q2 balance of £1,707.1bn, matching Barclays’ reporting date to the day. The June 2026 reading is an estimate, because the Bank of England’s 2026 Q2 MLAR is not published until 8 September 2026. Carrying the market forward at its recent 0.7% quarterly growth rate would put Barclays’ true June 2026 share nearer 10.0% than 10.1%. Axis Intelligence Research will restate this figure against the published denominator when it lands.
What is not in dispute is the direction. Barclays UK grew mortgage balances 5.9% year-on-year against market growth of 2.6%. It is taking share, and it is taking it while the average loan-to-value of its portfolio climbed from 54% to 57% — with the average LTV on new lending steady at 70%.
Sarah Davis: A 3.3-percentage-point rise in portfolio LTV over a year is not, on its own, alarming — it partly reflects a book growing faster than the seasoning of the loans inside it. The number to hold alongside it is Barclays’ UK retail credit impairment charge, which rose to £338m from £237m. UK card arrears at 30 days moved from 0.7% to 0.9%. Small absolute numbers, consistently pointing the same way. That is what taking share costs.

Total assets crossed £1.73 trillion, up £186.2bn in six months. The driver is trading activity, not lending: derivative financial instrument assets rose to £302.6bn from £251.5bn, and cash collateral and settlement balances rose to £182.5bn from £121.6bn. Loans and advances grew £14.8bn over the same period.
The liquidity coverage ratio fell 20 percentage points over twelve months to 157.7% — still a £117.2bn surplus over the regulatory requirement, and still a number that has moved consistently in one direction for four consecutive quarters.
How Systemic Is Barclays?
Every November the Prudential Regulation Authority publishes the scores and buffer rates for UK-headquartered global systemically important institutions, using the Basel Committee methodology applied to the previous year-end. It is one of the few genuinely comparable, year-on-year regulatory measures of a bank’s importance to the financial system, and it is almost never reported as a series.
Axis Intelligence Research compiled the five most recent PRA disclosures.
| PRA disclosure year | Barclays PLC score | Sub-category | G-SII buffer rate | Buffer applies from | Source |

| 2025 | 291 | 2 | 1.5% | 1 Jan 2027 | Bank of England / PRA |

Compilation: Axis Intelligence Research, from PRA annual G-SII disclosures. Retrieved 20 August 2026.
Axis Intelligence Research finds Barclays’ PRA systemic score rose 41 points between the 2021 and 2025 disclosures, from 250 to 291 — its highest reading across the five published years. The bank’s sub-category and 1.5% buffer rate have not changed across the whole period, which is the point: Barclays has grown materially more systemic without crossing a regulatory threshold. The 2025 list placed HSBC Holdings at 389 and Standard Chartered at 142, meaning Barclays now scores 74.8% of HSBC’s level against 67.8% in 2021.
The scoring methodology and underlying indicators are published by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which released additional detail on the 2025 assessment on 27 November 2025.

Note: the digitally active customer count excludes Tesco Bank, acquired by Barclays in Q4 2024.
Divide one by the other and you get a figure Barclays does not publish. Axis Intelligence Research calculates 68,447 digitally active customers per UK branch at 30 June 2026, up 3.4% from 66,184 a year earlier — 14.1m ÷ 206 against 13.7m ÷ 207. The ratio moved because digital customers grew 2.9% while the branch estate shrank by one. It is a slow-motion number, and that is exactly why it is worth tracking: at this rate the denominator, not the numerator, will do most of the future work.
Separately, Barclays’ own regulatory complaints disclosure states that Barclays Bank UK PLC maintains 42 million accounts and Barclays Bank PLC over 1.2 million accounts within the FCA banking category, covering current accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. Firms above the reporting threshold must publish these figures alongside complaints volumes under FCA rules.
For market-level context, financial services firms across the UK received 1.87m complaints in H2 2025, with banking and credit cards accounting for 857,757 of them — a 4.7% decrease on H1 2025, per the FCA’s aggregate complaints data.
What Changed in Barclays’ US Consumer Bank in 2026?
The US Consumer Bank was Barclays’ fastest-moving division in the first half, and most of the movement was structural rather than organic.
On 24 April 2026 Barclays exited its American Airlines co-branded credit card partnership, releasing £3.6bn of risk weighted assets and generating a gain on sale of around £225m. On 1 May 2026 it completed the acquisition of Best Egg, a US direct-to-consumer personal loan origination platform focused on prime borrowers, for around £0.6bn, picking up roughly £0.3bn of financial assets and £0.2bn of financial liabilities.

A reported 24.2% return on tangible equity that becomes 14.9% once a disposal gain is removed is the kind of gap that ends up in a headline unqualified. Barclays disclosed the adjusted figure itself, in its own footnote. Both belong in any citation of this division.
The credit picture underneath deserves equal billing. The loan loss rate widened 52bps to 575bps, the share of card customers scoring below 660 on FICO rose from 12% to 14%, and the division’s total coverage ratio held at 11.1%. Net interest margin of 12.96% is compensation for exactly that risk profile — a 228bps year-on-year widening in the margin sits alongside a two-point deterioration in the subprime mix.

The Structural Hedge Dependency Ratio (SHDR) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric dividing a bank’s gross structural hedge contributions by its group net interest income for the same period. Barclays’ SHDR was 45.1% in H1 2026 (£3,456m ÷ £7,658m) against 39.6% in H1 2025 (£2,778m ÷ £7,022m). It shows how much of a bank’s interest income is being generated by its swap book rather than by the spread on customer balances.
Why did Barclays’ net interest income rise if lending margins were compressing?
Because the structural hedge more than offset the compression. Barclays’ own commentary attributes Barclays UK’s income growth to higher structural hedge income partially offset by retail deposit dynamics and mortgage margin compression. Across the group, gross hedge contributions rose £678m while total net interest income rose £636m.
How much of Barclays’ capital is tied up in the Investment Bank?
The Investment Bank held £204.1bn of risk weighted assets at 30 June 2026, 55.9% of the group’s £364.8bn. Barclays’ stated 2028 target is around 50%, and its 2026 guidance is mid-50s in percentage terms.
What is Barclays’ CET1 ratio and where does it sit against target?
14.3% at 30 June 2026, unchanged from December 2025. Barclays states that after the £1.0bn buyback announced with the H1 2026 results, the ratio would reduce to 14.0% — the top end of its 13–14% target range.
What is the FCA motor finance redress scheme costing Barclays?
Barclays held a motor finance provision of £430m at 30 June 2026, after increasing it by £105m in Q1 2026 following the FCA’s publication of final redress scheme rules in March 2026. On 2 July 2026 the Upper Tribunal ordered a suspension of parts of the scheme following four legal challenges, expected to be heard in Q4 2026 or Q1 2027.
How much is Barclays returning to shareholders in 2026?
Barclays announced £2.3bn of total capital distributions in respect of H1 2026: a £1.0bn buyback announced with the H1 results, the £500m buyback announced at Q1, and a dividend of 5.9p per share worth around £0.8bn. Its stated plan is to return more than £15bn between 2026 and 2028.

What happened to Barclays’ American Airlines credit card portfolio?
Barclays exited the partnership on 24 April 2026, releasing £3.6bn of risk weighted assets and booking a gain on sale of around £225m. Excluding that gain, the US Consumer Bank’s H1 2026 return on tangible equity was 14.9% rather than the reported 24.2%.
Which Barclays division earns the highest return?

Methodology
Collection. Every figure in this report was taken from a document fetched and read during production between 19 and 20 August 2026. Barclays’ primary filing was accessed through the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s EDGAR archive rather than the corporate investor relations site, which blocks automated retrieval. Regulatory market data was taken directly from Bank of England, Prudential Regulation Authority and Financial Conduct Authority publications.
Primary sources used.
- Barclays PLC, Form 6-K, Exhibit 99.1, results for the six months ended 30 June 2026 — US Securities and Exchange Commission, filed 28 July 2026.
- Barclays PLC, Form 6-K, Exhibit 99.1, results for the six months ended 30 June 2025 — US Securities and Exchange Commission, filed 29 July 2025.
- Barclays PLC, Annual Report on Form 20-F for the year ended 31 December 2025 — US Securities and Exchange Commission.
- Bank of England, Mortgage Lenders and Administrators Statistics 2026 Q1, Table A — published 9 June 2026.
- Prudential Regulation Authority, 2025 list of UK-headquartered Globally Systemically Important Institutions — published 28 November 2025, with the 2021–2024 disclosures used for the series.
- Financial Conduct Authority, aggregate complaints data 2025 H2 — published April 2026.
- Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, 2025 G-SIB assessment detail — published 27 November 2025.
Formulas disclosed.
- SHDR = (gross structural hedge contributions ÷ group net interest income) × 100.
- Structural hedge residual = group net interest income − gross structural hedge contributions.
- Divisional income share = divisional income ÷ sum of the five operating divisions’ income (Head Office excluded).
- Divisional concentration = Herfindahl-Hirschman Index across the five operating divisions’ percentage income shares.
- UK mortgage share = Barclays UK mortgage balances ÷ Bank of England MLAR total outstanding residential mortgage loans.
- Digitally active customers per branch = digitally active UK customers ÷ number of UK branches.
- Full-year 2025 aggregates = sum of the four filed 2025 quarters from Barclays’ rolling quarterly results table.
Verification. All arithmetic was computed twice using independent formulations. Divisional net interest income was summed and reconciled against the filing’s stated group net interest income for both periods, returning an exact match (£7,658m for H1 2026, £7,022m for H1 2025). Full-year 2025 profit before tax was derived two ways — by summing quarterly profit before tax, and by running the income-minus-costs-plus-other-minus-impairment chain — with both returning £9,139m. Every external URL was confirmed live at the retrieval date.
Scope. The June 2026 UK mortgage share is an estimate, because the Bank of England’s 2026 Q2 mortgage data is not published until 8 September 2026; the June 2025 reading is an exact date match and is labelled as such. The structural hedge residual is an arithmetic remainder derived by Axis Intelligence Research, not a line item Barclays reports. Half-year comparisons are affected by a 4% year-on-year appreciation of average sterling against the US dollar, which Barclays states reduced income and profits while flattering costs and impairment charges. The SHDR can only be computed for banks that disclose gross structural hedge contributions.
