Equipment is the smallest line on a home security bill. Axis Intelligence Research priced five real starter systems from Ring, ADT Blu, Abode and Vivint and carried each one over five years: the median system costs $1,766.37, and monitoring makes up 77% to 96% of that total.

Quick Answer: How Much Does a Home Security System Cost in 2026?

A starter home security system costs $99 to $549 upfront in 2026, plus $19.99 to $49.99 a month for 24/7 professional monitoring, based on vendor pricing pages checked October 6, 2026. Axis Intelligence Research’s five-year metric, the Monitored Home Cost (MHC-60), puts the median starter system at $1,766.37 over 60 months.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research finds the median five-year cost (MHC-60) of a professionally monitored starter home security system is $1,766.37, as of October 6, 2026.
  2. Monitoring accounts for 76.6% to 95.5% of five-year spending across the five baskets Axis Intelligence Research priced, a share it calls the Monitoring Lock-in Ratio (MLR).
  3. The cheapest kit is not the cheapest system: ADT Blu’s $99 Starter Kit becomes the second-most expensive basket over five years ($2,198.40) because its Pro-Protect plan costs $34.99 a month.
  4. The median entry-level professional monitoring tier across eight plans from six providers is $25.99 a month, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s October 2026 price sweep.
  5. Paying for monitoring annually instead of monthly cuts five-year cost by $199.45 at Ring and $389.45 at Abode, larger than the price difference between most starter kits.

*Conditional price. ADT Blu’s 60% discount requires a compatible monitoring plan, per ADT’s Blu kit page. Abode’s $99 price applies when the kit is bought with a monthly Pro plan, per Abode’s product page.

Read the asterisks before the prices. The two deepest discounts on the board — ADT Blu and Abode, both near 60% — are not equipment discounts at all. They are monitoring acquisition costs, paid for by the subscription that has to come with them. Ring’s 18% is the only kit discount in the table you can take without signing up for anything.

What does each kit actually contain?

Kit “pieces” are not comparable units. Ring’s 8-piece kit holds a base station, keypad, four door/window contact sensors, one motion detector and a range extender. Vivint’s HomeProtect, per its package terms, includes a hub, keypad, three door/window sensors, one motion sensor and a yard sign. Abode’s Smart Security Kit ships one door/window sensor, one motion sensor and a key fob — no keypad. That is why Axis Intelligence Research prices baskets, not kits (see methodology).

Daily rates converted by Axis Intelligence Research at rate × 365 ÷ 12. Sources: SimpliSafe monitoring, Cove monitoring, Abode plans, ADT Blu plans, ADT Pro Install plans.

Per-day pricing is the industry’s quietest framing device. SimpliSafe’s Core plan reads as $1.10 — and bills as $33.46 a month, the ninth-cheapest of thirteen tiers here, not the cheapest.

Self-monitoring: what does skipping the monitoring center cost?

Self-monitoring keeps app alerts but drops dispatch. ADT Blu Self-Protect costs $14.99 a month. Abode lets you run the system on no subscription at all, and Ring’s Solo and Multi plans ($4.99 and $9.99) add video history without professional monitoring, per the Ring plans page. With nobody watching, the alarm is a notification you have to answer yourself — at work, asleep, or on a plane.

What Is the Real 5-Year Cost of a Home Security System?

This is the number no pricing page shows you. Axis Intelligence Research built the Monitored Home Cost, 60 months (MHC-60): what a household actually pays to own and professionally monitor a comparable starter system for five years.

MHC-60 = upfront cost (basket equipment + installation fee, where charged) + 60 × entry professional-monitoring monthly price

Each basket covers roughly the same footprint: a hub, an arming control, three to four entry sensors and one motion sensor.

Ring 8-piece + Ring Pro (monthly)$249.99$19.99/mo$1,449.3982.8%Ring

Vivint HomeProtect, no contract + list install$548.99$29.99/mo$2,348.3976.6%Vivint

Median MHC-60: $1,766.37 (Axis Intelligence Research, October 6, 2026). Abode’s basket adds three $15.99 mini door/window sensors to the $99 kit to reach four entry points.

The ranking inverts the kit-price ranking. ADT Blu has the lowest upfront cost in the field and finishes fourth of five; Ring has one of the highest upfront costs and finishes first. A $15 difference in the monthly line moves the five-year total by $900. A $150 difference in the kit moves it by $150.

What is the Monitoring Lock-in Ratio?

The Monitoring Lock-in Ratio (MLR) is the share of the five-year bill that goes to the monitoring subscription: MLR = (60 × monthly monitoring) ÷ MHC-60. It runs from 76.6% (Vivint, no contract) to 95.5% (ADT Blu) in this sweep.

An MLR above 90% describes a business model: hardware sold near the floor, margin collected over the subscription. That is not a scandal — monitoring centers are staffed around the clock — but it tells a buyer exactly where to negotiate. On an ADT Blu basket, a perfect deal on equipment can save you at most 4.5% of the five-year cost.

How much does annual billing save?

ProviderMHC-60, monthly billingMHC-60, annual billingFive-year savingSource
Ring$1,449.39$1,249.94$199.45Ring
Abode$1,766.37$1,376.92$389.45Abode

Abode’s annual Pro plan ($245.99) is cheaper than ten months of monthly billing. Over five years, that saving exceeds the full list price of Abode’s own kit.

Contract vs. No-Contract: Which Costs Less Over Three Years?

Vivint is the only provider in this sweep that publishes both prices side by side. With the three-year agreement, HomeProtect costs $199.99 with installation included and $24.99 a month; without it, $349.99 plus a $199 installation and $29.99 a month, according to Vivint’s HomeProtect page.

Over the 36-month term, Axis Intelligence Research calculates the contract path is $529.00 cheaper: ($349.99 + $199 + 36 × $29.99) − ($199.99 + 36 × $24.99). The trade is flexibility. If you move or cancel in year one, the no-contract path is the one you will want to have chosen. Vivint also offers equipment financing at 0% APR for up to 60 months with credit approval, which spreads the upfront cost but does not change the total.

What Moves the Price of a Home Security System?

Cameras, before anything else. ADT Blu’s camera-inclusive Total Safety Kit costs $485.40 on sale against $99 for the sensor-only starter, and ADT charges an extra $10 a month once cameras join a Blu system. Live-agent video tiers sit in a different bracket: Ring’s Virtual Security Guard is $99 a month.

Entry points. Every extra door or window is another sensor. Abode’s mini sensor sells for $15.99 and Ring’s contact sensor for $14.99 on sale, so a home with eight protected openings instead of four adds about $64 at Abode’s sensor price.

Who installs it. DIY kits from Ring, Abode and ADT Blu need no technician. Professionally installed systems add a fee — Vivint lists $199, waived on promotion. Installation pricing across vendors is broken down on our smart home installation cost page.

Monitoring tier. The jump from a basic dispatch tier to an AI or live-video tier is the single largest lever: SimpliSafe runs from $23.12 to $80.91 a month equivalent across four tiers.

Local alarm permits and false-alarm fines. Ring’s plan terms note that permits, false-alarm fees and verified-response fees may apply depending on jurisdiction. These are set by your city or county, not the vendor, and sit outside MHC-60.

How to Buy a Home Security System Without Overpaying

Price the five-year bill, not the box. Multiply the monthly monitoring price by 60 and add the kit; that single number ranks systems better than any sale banner. Use the estimator above to plug in your own basket.

If you plan to stay at least three years, take annual billing where it is offered and a contract only when the published discount is real and you are confident about the address. If you rent or expect to move, weight the no-contract column and a DIY kit you can take with you — ADT says Blu systems can be packed up and moved.

Treat a kit discount tied to a monitoring plan as a monitoring price, not an equipment price. And count the sensors, not the “pieces.”

Home Security Cost Questions, Answered

Is a $99 home security system really $99?

No. At ADT Blu and Abode, the $99 kit price requires a monitoring subscription, $34.99 and $26.99 a month respectively. Over five years, those systems cost $2,198.40 and $1,766.37 under Axis Intelligence Research’s MHC-60 method.

What is the cheapest professionally monitored home security system in 2026?

Among the five starter baskets Axis Intelligence Research priced on October 6, 2026, Ring’s 8-piece kit with Ring Pro has the lowest five-year cost: $1,449.39 billed monthly, or $1,249.94 billed annually.

How much should 24/7 professional monitoring cost per month?

The median entry tier across eight plans Axis Intelligence Research checked is $25.99 a month. Entry pro tiers ran from $19.99 (Ring Pro) to $49.99 (ADT Pro Install, starting price) on October 6, 2026.

Does a home security system pay for itself through insurance discounts?

Possibly in part. Abode states most insurers offer 5–30% discounts for monitored systems, but that is a vendor claim. Ask your own insurer for the exact discount before counting it against a $1,449–$2,348 five-year bill.

Can I use a security system without paying a monthly fee?

Yes, with trade-offs. Abode works with no subscription and Ring kits work locally without a plan, but nobody dispatches police for you, and remote features such as arming from your phone may require a paid tier.

Is a 3-year security contract worth it?

At Vivint’s published prices, the three-year agreement saves $529 over 36 months versus no contract. It is worth it if you will stay at the address for the full term; otherwise early cancellation risk erases the benefit.

Why do pros care about the Monitoring Lock-in Ratio?

Because it shows where the money goes. An MLR of 95.5% means equipment is under 5% of five-year spending, so negotiating the monitoring rate or billing cycle matters roughly twenty times more than chasing a hardware sale.

Methodology

Axis Intelligence Research read every price on the vendor’s own public pricing or product page on October 6, 2026; URLs are logged per row in the dataset. No third-party review or aggregator site was used as a price source. This analysis is documentation-based: no systems were purchased or installed for this page.

Baskets. Each MHC-60 basket approximates one hub, one arming control (keypad or fob), three to four entry sensors and one motion sensor. Where a kit fell short, Axis added the vendor’s own add-on sensor at its displayed price (Abode: three mini sensors at $15.99).

Formulas.

  • MHC-60 = upfront equipment + installation fee (if charged) + 60 × entry professional-monitoring monthly price.
  • MLR = (60 × monthly monitoring) ÷ MHC-60.
  • Daily plans converted at daily rate × 365 ÷ 12.
  • Discount depth = 1 − (sale price ÷ list price).
  • Median entry monitoring = median of eight entry professional-monitoring tiers (Ring Pro, Cove Basic, SimpliSafe Standard, Vivint contract and no-contract, Abode Pro, ADT Blu Pro-Protect, ADT Pro Install starting price).

Scope. Prices exclude taxes, shipping, local permit and false-alarm fees. SimpliSafe and Cove are included in the monitoring benchmark but not in MHC-60 baskets, because their kit prices could not be verified on a live vendor page during this sweep. Sale prices change frequently; the dataset records list prices alongside them.
