Quick Answer: How Much Does Smart Home Installation Cost in 2026?

Professional smart home installation from the major national providers costs $124.99 to $199 at list price in 2026 — $124.99 per system at SimpliSafe, $129.99 per device at Ring, and $199 per system at Vivint (often waived online). But the install fee is the small line. Axis Intelligence Research’s FLIC-36 shows the median 36-month cost of a pro-installed, professionally monitored system is $1,278.64 — and monitoring makes up 84–91% of it.

Key Findings

  1. SimpliSafe charges $124.99 to start for professional installation, the lowest per-system list fee among the four national providers Axis Intelligence Research priced on October 6, 2026.
  2. Ring prices installation per device, starting at $129.99 each, so a doorbell plus three cameras starts at $519.96 — more than double Vivint’s $199 per-system list fee.
  3. According to Axis Intelligence Research, the installation fee is only 9.4% to 15.6% of a system’s 36-month Fully Loaded Installed Cost (FLIC-36) where the fee is priced separately; monitoring is the other 84–91%.
  4. ADT’s $99 pro-installed system requires a 36-month professional monitoring plan, and ADT’s pro-install monitoring starts at $49.99 per month — a $1,898.64 FLIC-36, the highest of the configurations we priced.
  5. A $129.99 Ring device install equals 4.3 hours of the U.S. median electrician wage ($30.38/hour, BLS, May 2025), an Axis Intelligence Research labor-equivalent calculation.

What Is FLIC-36, the Axis Fully Loaded Installed Cost?

FLIC-36 (Fully Loaded Installed Cost, 36 months) is the metric Axis Intelligence Research built for this page because no pricing page shows it. Vendors advertise the install fee and the monthly fee on different parts of the page — sometimes on different pages. FLIC-36 puts them on one line, over the period that matters: 36 months is the length of ADT’s required monitoring term on its $99 pro-install offer, so it’s the honest comparison window.

The formula:

FLIC-36 = Installation fee (list) + upfront system charge, where it is bundled with install + (36 × entry-level professional monitoring price per month)

Two companion measures come out of it:

  • Install Share (IS) = Installation fee ÷ FLIC-36. It tells you how much of your three-year spend the installer actually captures.
  • Labor-Hour Equivalent (LHE) = Installation fee ÷ BLS median electrician hourly wage ($30.38). It translates a flat fee into hours of skilled-trade wage — useful when you’re weighing a vendor tech against a local electrician.

Hardware is deliberately excluded from FLIC-36 (except where ADT bundles it into a single $99 charge), because sensor and camera counts vary by home. The estimator below lets you add your own equipment total.

The table hides the single most important structural difference: unit. Ring’s installation page states plainly that one installation covers one device. SimpliSafe and Vivint price the visit. That flips the ranking the moment you own more than one wired device — more on that below.

What the install fee actually buys

Ring’s per-device fee includes mounting and wiring of the new device, removal of the old one, Wi-Fi and app configuration, and a walkthrough. Modifications or extensions to existing wiring are billed separately, and Ring limits extensions to low-voltage runs (PoE or plug-in USB-C). SimpliSafe’s installation page describes sensor placement, Wi-Fi setup, connection to professional monitoring, and a one-on-one walkthrough. Vivint lists custom system design, sensor and camera placement and wiring, Wi-Fi setup, smart home device integration, and free support for 120 days after install.

Smart Home Monitoring Costs: The Line That Outlasts the Installer

Monitoring prices as listed October 6, 2026. SimpliSafe publishes daily rates; Axis Intelligence Research converted them to monthly equivalents (daily rate × 365 ÷ 12).

Read that table the way an installer reads a service ticket: the visit happens once, the subscription bills every month. The difference between SimpliSafe’s Standard and Core tiers alone — $10.34 a month — adds up to $372.30 over 36 months, three times the install fee.

The Axis FLIC-36: Smart Home Installation Cost Over 36 Months

Axis Intelligence Research calculated FLIC-36 for each provider’s entry professionally monitored configuration, installed by a professional where the vendor offers it.

Axis Intelligence Research finds the median FLIC-36 across the five professionally installed configurations is $1,278.64. Where the install fee is priced separately, it represents 9.4% to 15.6% of the three-year total.

Here’s the month-three reality check Jeff applies to every system: the installer leaves on day one, and by month three the install fee is a memory. What you’re still paying is the monitoring. A homeowner who negotiates $75 off an install but accepts a plan $10 a month richer than they need is $285 behind by the end of year three.

Per-device vs. per-system: where the ranking flips

Ring’s per-device structure is cheapest for a single doorbell swap and gets expensive fast:

Wired devices to installRing (from $129.99/device)SimpliSafe (from $124.99/system)Vivint ($199/system list)
1$129.99$124.99$199.00
2$259.98$124.99$199.00
4$519.96$124.99$199.00

Axis Intelligence Research calculation from listed starting prices. SimpliSafe and Vivint state that final pricing can depend on system size and design; the per-system figures are starting points, not caps.

At two devices, Ring’s starting install total already passes Vivint’s list fee. For a doorbell plus three cameras, Ring’s floor is $519.96 — the cost of roughly 17 hours of median electrician wage.

What a pro install fee means in labor hours

InstallerFeeLabor-Hour Equivalent (÷ $30.38)
SimpliSafe (per system)$124.994.1 hours
Ring (per device)$129.994.3 hours
Vivint (per system, list)$199.006.6 hours

The median wage for electricians was $30.38 an hour in May 2025, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. A wage is not a billed rate — a contractor’s invoice also carries travel, insurance, licensing, and margin — so LHE is a translation, not a markup claim. It does make one thing concrete: Vivint says most of its installs are finished in about an hour or less, which puts its $199 list fee at roughly $199 per stated install hour.

Run Your Own Number: The Smart Home Installation Cost Estimator

The interactive estimator on this page uses the same formula as FLIC-36, extended with your hardware:

Your 36-month cost = Equipment + Installation (per-device × devices, or per-system) + (Monthly plan × 36) + local permit fees

Inputs: provider, number of wired devices, monitoring tier, monthly vs. annual billing (Ring only), and an optional local alarm-permit amount. Defaults are the verified prices in the tables above.

Two settings move the result most. Billing cycle first: Ring Pro billed annually costs $199.99 a year versus $239.88 billed monthly — $119.67 saved over three years, nearly the cost of one device install. Then the tier: on SimpliSafe, each step up the plan ladder adds more over 36 months than the installation fee itself.

What Moves Smart Home Installation Cost

Device count and pricing unit. The single biggest swing. Per-device pricing (Ring) scales linearly; per-system pricing (SimpliSafe, Vivint) doesn’t, at least at the starting price.

Wiring scope. Ring bills wiring modifications and extensions separately and supports extensions only for low-voltage runs. Line-voltage work — a new circuit, a relocated junction box — falls outside every vendor’s flat fee and belongs to a licensed electrician.

Contract structure. ADT’s $99 pro-installed system requires a 36-month monitoring plan, is subject to credit approval, and carries early-cancellation fees, per ADT’s offer terms (expiring November 9, 2026). Vivint offers month-to-month service when equipment is bought upfront, and equipment financing at 0% APR for up to 60 months through third-party partners, subject to credit approval. SimpliSafe and ADT Blu advertise no long-term contract.

Promotions. Vivint’s $199 install drops to $0 on new systems purchased online. Promotional pricing is real money, but it’s also the line most likely to change before your appointment — confirm it in writing.

Local fees outside the vendor’s bill. Ring’s plan terms note that permits, false-alarm fees, or verified guard response may cost extra depending on your jurisdiction. Those are municipal charges; no installer’s price includes them.

Smart thermostats. Thermostat installs sit at the edge of this market because they touch HVAC wiring. The energy side matters for payback: ENERGY STAR puts heating and cooling at almost half of the average household’s annual energy bill — more than $900 a year — and certifies smart thermostats on field-measured savings.

Buying Guidance: Which Installation Path Fits Which Home

One doorbell or one camera to swap: Ring’s $129.99 per-device install is the cheapest pro option on the table. If the old device is wired and the transformer is adequate, it’s a one-visit job.

Whole-home security with 4+ devices: per-system pricing wins. SimpliSafe’s $124.99 starting fee is the lowest list price; Vivint’s $199 is often $0 online but comes with Vivint’s equipment and $29.99+ monitoring.

You want professional design, not just mounting: Vivint and ADT Pro Install both sell the walkthrough and placement plan as part of the visit. ADT’s FLIC-36 is the highest we priced, and the 36-month term is the price of the $99 entry.

You might move within three years: favor no-contract plans (SimpliSafe, ADT Blu, Ring) and DIY-capable hardware. SimpliSafe lets you switch from pro install to DIY before your appointment and pay only when you schedule.

Budget priority: self-installing saves exactly the install fee on whatever plan you choose — $124.99 to $199 at list. Choosing the right monitoring tier saves more: on SimpliSafe, Standard instead of Core is worth $372.30 over 36 months.

Smart Home Installation Questions Homeowners Ask Before Booking

Is “free installation” actually free?

Vivint’s $0 install applies to new systems purchased online; the list price is $199. ADT’s $99 system includes installation but requires a 36-month professional monitoring plan, starting at $49.99 a month. In both cases the install is discounted, not removed from the economics.

Is Ring installation priced per device or per visit?

Per device. Ring states that one installation covers one device, starting at $129.99. Installing a doorbell and three cameras therefore starts at $519.96 before any wiring extensions.

Can I install it myself and still get 24/7 professional monitoring?

Yes, at SimpliSafe, Ring, and ADT Blu. SimpliSafe confirms its 24/7 monitoring is available whether you self-install or hire its technicians. Ring Pro ($19.99/month) and ADT Blu Pro-Protect ($34.99/month) both add professional monitoring to self-installed systems.

What isn’t covered by a flat installation fee?

Ring bills wiring modifications and extensions separately and only extends low-voltage wiring. Local alarm permits and false-alarm fines are set by your city or county and are never in the installer’s price.

How much does annual billing save on monitoring?

On Ring Pro, $39.89 a year: $199.99 annually versus $239.88 billed monthly. Over 36 months that’s $119.67 — close to the cost of one Ring device installation.

How long does a professional smart home installation take?

Vivint says most of its installs are completed in about an hour or less, with time varying by system size and home layout. Larger systems with more cameras and wired devices take longer.

Should I hire a vendor technician or an independent electrician?

For low-voltage devices on a vendor’s ecosystem, the vendor tech’s flat fee includes app setup and monitoring activation. For anything requiring new line-voltage wiring, you need a licensed electrician; BLS notes most states require electricians to be licensed.

Methodology

Axis Intelligence Research collected every price on this page on October 6, 2026, directly from the live pricing, installation, monitoring, or offer-terms pages of Ring, SimpliSafe, ADT (including ADT Blu), and Vivint. We did not use quotes from aggregators or review sites. The electrician wage comes from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook (May 2025 median, page last modified August 27, 2026). No hands-on installation test was performed for this article; the analysis is based on vendor-published pricing and terms.

Calculations (all Axis Intelligence Research):

  • SimpliSafe monthly equivalent = daily rate × 365 ÷ 12; 36-month total = daily rate × 365 × 3.
  • FLIC-36 = installation fee (list) + bundled upfront system charge (ADT only) + 36 × entry professional monitoring monthly price.
  • Install Share = installation fee ÷ FLIC-36.
  • Labor-Hour Equivalent = installation fee ÷ $30.38.
  • Median FLIC-36 is the middle value of the five professionally installed configurations.

Scope notes. “Starting” prices are the vendors’ own floors; installs with more devices or complex wiring can price higher. FLIC-36 excludes taxes, hardware (except ADT’s bundled $99), and local permit fees. Promotional prices are recorded alongside list prices and labeled.
