TikTok enters 2027 as the world’s second-largest ad audience, with its biggest question answered and a new set opened. The US ban threat ended with a joint venture in January 2026. TikTok’s ads now reach 2.33 billion adults, slightly more than Facebook’s. TikTok Shop is on course to move more than $100 billion of goods in a year. But growth in TikTok’s reach nearly stalled in the third quarter of 2026, the US audience shrank while Brazil overtook it, and regulators in Brussels and Canberra are now the main antagonists. Axis Intelligence Research scored ten shifts on evidence, not hype, and checked them against seven published trend lists.
Quick Answer
The five TikTok trends most likely to shape 2027, ranked by the Axis Trend Scorecard:
- The ad engine closes in on YouTube. TikTok’s ads reach 2.33 billion adults, second only to YouTube; WARC forecasts TikTok ad revenue of $45.2 billion by 2027, and Kantar’s 2026 survey ranks TikTok first among platforms where marketers plan to raise ad spend in 2027.
- The attention leader meets “addictive design” rules. Users average 1 hour 55 minutes a day in TikTok, more than in any other social app (Similarweb, August 2026), and the European Commission has preliminarily found its design in breach of the Digital Services Act.
- TikTok Shop becomes an AI-run marketplace. Gross merchandise value reached an estimated $50.3 billion in the first half of 2026, up 92% (Momentum Works and Tabcut), and TikTok is adding one-click checkout and an AI shopping assistant.
- Growth moves to the Global South as the US shrinks. TikTok’s adult reach rose 33% in Indonesia and 35% in the Philippines in a year, while US reach fell 2% and Brazil overtook the United States as TikTok’s second-largest market.
- The US gets its own TikTok. TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, in which ByteDance keeps 19.9%, now runs US data, moderation and a retrained algorithm.
How many people will use TikTok in 2027? Axis Intelligence Research projects about 2.42 billion adults reachable by TikTok ads in October 2027 in its base case (range 2.25 to 2.74 billion), up from 2.33 billion in October 2026.
Key Findings
- TikTok’s ad reach passed Facebook’s in October 2026, 2.33 billion adults against 2.32 billion, making it the second-largest ad audience after YouTube (DataReportal, Digital 2027).
- Growth in that reach slowed from +8.1% to +4.7% to +0.9% over the last three quarters, while the share of online adults who use TikTok held at about 36% for two years (GWI); Axis Intelligence Research reads most of 2026’s 17.4% reach gain as a one-off.
- TikTok’s US ad reach fell 8.5% in the third quarter of 2026 to 149.9 million adults, and Brazil (152.1 million) overtook the United States as TikTok’s second-largest market behind Indonesia (240.1 million).
- News on TikTok has stopped growing in the US: 20% of adults regularly get news there in 2026, unchanged from 2025, and the share among under-30s slipped from 43% to 39% (Pew Research Center).
- Axis Intelligence Research projects 2.42 billion adults reachable by TikTok ads in October 2027 in its base case, a 4% gain, within a range of 2.25 billion to 2.74 billion.
- TikTok’s ad tools count at least 1.44 to 1.72 times more adults than surveys can explain in Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico and Vietnam, against 1.15 in the US (Axis reach-to-use ratio, from DataReportal and GWI data).

Alex Rivera: The top trend isn’t a feature. It’s money. TikTok spent 2025 proving it could survive in the US; 2026 proved it can monetize like a mature platform, through ads and checkout at once. But the growth story is quietly changing: almost all of TikTok’s new reach is in Southeast Asia and Latin America, and the US went backwards last quarter. Plan 2027 for a bigger TikTok that earns less per user.
What Will Trend on TikTok in 2027? (Content and Culture)
Nobody can name next August’s viral sound in November. What can be read a year ahead are the behaviors that keep producing trends. Three show up in TikTok’s own data and launches:
- “Real over polished.” TikTok’s annual forecast, TikTok Next 2026 (January 14, 2026), framed the year around a retreat from fantasy and escapism toward relatable creators and curiosity-driven viewing. The 2027 edition is the first signpost: the 2026 one landed in mid-January.
- Episodes instead of one-offs. Micro-dramas, creator series and in-app “Mini Series” train viewers to come back for part two (trend 10).
- Search-shaped content. Videos that answer a question — where to eat, what to buy, how to fix it — are built for TikTok’s search bar, which TikTok now sells to advertisers (trend 8).
Agencies keep month-by-month trend calendars for live formats; this page tracks the structural shifts underneath them.
The 10 TikTok Trends for 2027, One by One
1. The ad engine closes in on YouTube
What it is. TikTok is turning attention into ad revenue at a pace that brings it within reach of YouTube, the long-time leader in video advertising.
Why it matters in 2027. With US ownership settled, advertisers who paused budgets in 2025 have one fewer reason to wait, and performance and shopping ads compound.
The evidence.
- TikTok’s ads reached 2.33 billion adults in October 2026, ahead of Facebook (2.32 billion) and Instagram (1.96 billion) and behind YouTube (2.77 billion, partial data) (DataReportal, Digital 2027, from the platforms’ ad tools).
- TikTok’s UK-registered entity, which manages the UK, Europe and Latin America, reported 2025 revenue of $9.1 billion, up 45.7%, and its first profit (Companies House filing, reported by Forbes on August 20, 2026). It is the only audited TikTok revenue line in the public domain.
- Kantar’s Media Reactions 2026 ranked TikTok as the platform where marketers most plan to increase ad spend in 2027, with 84% of marketers placing ads on it (as cited by TikTok, October 5, 2026).
- TikTok opened its ad network of nearly 400,000 third-party apps to US advertisers in October 2026, extending its inventory beyond the feed.
- WARC projects TikTok ad revenue of $45.2 billion in 2027 (December 2025) and expects TikTok to overtake YouTube by 2030 (July 2026). The forecast reconciliation is below.
Who leads. TikTok in performance and shopping video; YouTube still leads total video ad revenue and the TV screen.
Stage: mainstream. Axis score: 16/20 (adoption 4, momentum 4, maturity 5, barriers 3).
Watch in 2027. TikTok’s UK accounts for 2026 (Companies House); WARC’s mid-year platform update; ByteDance’s reported full-year 2026 results.
What would prove it overhyped. The Europe/LatAm unit’s growth falling below 20%, or brands pulling budgets after an EU addictive-design decision.
Model campaign economics with our TikTok money calculator. The wider ad market: digital marketing trends 2027.
2. The attention leader meets “addictive design” rules
What it is. TikTok captures more time per user than any other social app, and regulators now treat that design itself as a legal risk.
Why it matters in 2027. A forced redesign of infinite scroll, autoplay or recommendations in the EU would be the first time a regulator changes how the core TikTok feed works.
The evidence.
- TikTok users averaged 1 hour 55 minutes a day in the app in August 2026, ahead of Instagram (1 h 40 min) and YouTube (1 h 28 min); US users averaged 2 h 02 min (Similarweb via DataReportal). Users open TikTok 13.2 times a day, for 8 minutes 41 seconds per session.
- 21% of US teens are on TikTok “almost constantly,” up from 16% in 2022, including 24% of girls, 34% of Hispanic teens and 37% of Black teens; 61% use it daily (Pew Research Center, 1,458 teens, September–October 2025).
- On February 6, 2026, the European Commission preliminarily found TikTok’s addictive design — infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, personalized recommendations — in breach of the Digital Services Act. A final decision can carry a fine of up to 6% of global turnover.
- TikTok is the favorite social platform of 10.0% of social media users worldwide, up from 7.9% two years earlier, and of 19.5% of women aged 16–24 (GWI via DataReportal, Q2 2026).
Who leads. TikTok on time per user; YouTube on total time, because more people use it.
Stage: mainstream. Axis score: 15/20 (adoption 5, momentum 3, maturity 5, barriers 2).
Watch in 2027. The Commission’s final decision on the February 2026 findings; any EU-only changes to TikTok’s feed defaults.
What would prove it overhyped. The Commission closing the case with commitments that leave the feed unchanged.
Benchmarks by country and platform: time spent on social media statistics.
3. TikTok Shop becomes an AI-run marketplace
What it is. Shopping on TikTok is moving from impulse buys inside videos to a storefront people open on purpose, increasingly operated by AI on both sides.
Why it matters in 2027. A marketplace competes with Amazon and Shopee for search and repeat purchases. Sellers now need catalog, pricing and fulfillment strategies, and their ad budgets are increasingly placed by TikTok’s automation.
The evidence.
- TikTok Shop’s GMV reached an estimated $50.3 billion in the first half of 2026, up 92%; the US contributed $11.8 billion, up 103% (Momentum Works and Tabcut, August 6, 2026).
- In the US, the Shop tab drove 51.4% of GMV in the first half of 2026, ahead of videos (40.4%) and livestreams (8.2%). Average prices fell in 21 of 27 categories.
- On October 5, 2026, TikTok announced “agentic commerce”: Buy Direct, one-click checkout from a brand inside the For You feed, and Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent for product questions, sizing and purchase, built with partners including Shopify, Salesforce and Stripe.
- GMV Max, TikTok’s automated Shop ad product, now optimizes for profit after affiliate commissions, coupons and fees (May and October 2026).
- If Momentum Works’ $123.5 billion projection for 2026 holds, TikTok Shop would equal about a fifth of the $586 billion Statista estimates for global social commerce in 2026 (Axis calculation; different methods).
Who leads. TikTok Shop in the US and Southeast Asia; Shopee and Amazon are the comparison set.
Stage: scaling. Axis score: 15/20 (adoption 4, momentum 5, maturity 3, barriers 3). GMV is a third-party estimate; TikTok does not publish it.
Watch in 2027. Black Friday to Cyber Monday 2026 results (November 27–30, 2026); Momentum Works’ full-year 2026 estimate; Shopping Assistant’s rollout beyond the US.
What would prove it overhyped. Second-half 2026 GMV below $50 billion, which would mean subsidies, not demand, drove the first half.
Alex Rivera: Watch the Shop tab share, not GMV. When more than half of US sales start in a storefront instead of a video, TikTok is a retailer, and sellers compete on price and delivery like on any marketplace. Check whether your margin survives a creator commission before you scale: our TikTok Shop fee calculator solves for the maximum commission you can pay.

4. Growth moves to the Global South as the US shrinks
What it is. TikTok’s new users come from Southeast Asia, Latin America and the EU. In the United States, its reach is now going backwards.
Why it matters in 2027. Content, languages, payments and TikTok Shop launches follow the new users, and so does ad inventory priced well below US levels.
The evidence.
| Country | Adult ad reach, Oct 2025 | Oct 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indonesia | 180 million | 240.1 million | +33% |
| Brazil | 131 million | 152.1 million | +16% |
| United States | 153 million | 149.9 million | −2% |
| Philippines | 64.0 million | 86.4 million | +35% |
Source: TikTok ad tools via DataReportal, Digital 2026 country reports and Digital 2027 Global Overview. Change: Axis calculation.
- Southeastern Asia now accounts for 25.1% of TikTok’s global ad audience and Latin America for about 22%, against 7.2% for Northern America (DataReportal, October 2026).
- TikTok’s official EU monthly active users reached 189 million in January–June 2026, from 169 million a year earlier: +11.8% (TikTok DSA transparency reports, the only legally mandated TikTok user count).
Who leads. TikTok in Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam and the Philippines; Instagram remains larger in the EU (297 million users).
Stage: scaling. Axis score: 15/20 (adoption 4, momentum 4, maturity 3, barriers 4).
Watch in 2027. DataReportal’s 2027 country reports (from mid-November 2026); TikTok’s H2 2026 DSA report (around February 2027).
What would prove it overhyped. Reach in Indonesia and the Philippines falling back, as the Philippines did in late 2025 (−6.9% in one quarter).
Country detail: social media users worldwide.
5. The US gets its own TikTok
What it is. Since January 2026, TikTok in the United States is run by a separate, majority non-ByteDance company with its own data, moderation and algorithm.
Why it matters in 2027. Features, safety rules and recommendations can now diverge between US TikTok and the rest of the world. For global brands, “TikTok strategy” starts to mean two platforms.
The evidence.
- TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC was established on January 22, 2026. Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX hold 15% each; ByteDance keeps 19.9%; Adam Presser is CEO. The company said the venture serves more than 200 million Americans and 7.5 million businesses.
- The venture controls US user data (in Oracle’s cloud), trust and safety, and a version of the recommendation algorithm retrained on US data; TikTok’s global entities still run advertising and e-commerce.
- US ad reach peaked at about 164 million adults in July 2026, then fell 8.5% to 149.9 million in October (DataReportal; July value derived by Axis). DataReportal gives no reason for the drop.
- The venture published its first security and Community Guidelines reports on July 30, 2026, and launched a US-only restaurant guide, “Must Eat,” on October 31, 2026.
- US support for banning TikTok fell from 50% in March 2023 to 34% in March 2025 (Pew Research Center).
Who leads. Oracle (data and algorithm security), with ByteDance’s global TikTok running the commercial side.
Stage: scaling. Axis score: 13/20 (adoption 4, momentum 3, maturity 3, barriers 3).
Watch in 2027. Whether US reach recovers in DataReportal’s January and April 2027 updates; congressional scrutiny of the algorithm licence; new US-only features.
What would prove it overhyped. The US and global apps staying functionally identical through 2027.
6. AI video floods in, users get a dial
What it is. Generative AI video is now a large share of TikTok uploads. TikTok sells AI video tools to advertisers while letting users turn the volume of AI content down.
Why it matters in 2027. Whether AI content is demoted, labeled or welcomed decides the reach of human creators and of AI-made ads.
The evidence.
- TikTok said in November 2025 that it hosts more than 1 billion AI-generated videos (company figure).
- It added an AI-generated content slider to “Manage Topics,” letting users see more or less AI content in the For You feed, and began testing invisible watermarks on content made with its own tools and on uploads with C2PA credentials (November 2025).
- In May 2026, TikTok integrated ByteDance’s Dreamina Seedance 2.0 video model into Symphony, its AI creative suite for advertisers.
- Hootsuite’s Social Media Trends 2026, drawn from more than 6,500 marketers, lists human-made content as a counter-trend to AI volume.
Stage: scaling. Axis score: 13/20 (adoption 4, momentum 3, maturity 3, barriers 3).
Watch in 2027. Whether TikTok discloses how many users turn the AI slider down; EU AI Act transparency rules for synthetic media.
What would prove it overhyped. Labeled AI content performing as well as human posts.
How social teams use AI: AI in social media statistics.
7. News on TikTok hits a ceiling
What it is. TikTok became a mainstream news source between 2020 and 2025. In 2026, that growth stopped.
Why it matters in 2027. Newsrooms and campaigns that built vertical-video desks assumed continued growth. TikTok news is now a mature channel with a young, diverse audience.
The evidence (Pew Research Center, US adults, survey of August 24–30, 2026).
| Group | Regularly get news on TikTok, 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| All US adults | 20% | 20% |
| Ages 18–29 | 43% | 39% |
| Ages 30–49 | 25% | 25% |
| Ages 50–64 | 10% | 11% |
| Ages 65+ | 3% | 4% |
| Adult TikTok users | 55% | 53% |
In 2020, 3% of US adults regularly got news on TikTok. In 2026, 35% of Hispanic and 32% of Black adults do, against 14% of White and Asian adults. Worldwide, 51.3% of TikTok users say they use it to keep up with news (GWI, Q2 2026).
Stage: mainstream. Axis score: 13/20 (adoption 4, momentum 1, maturity 5, barriers 3).
Watch in 2027. Pew’s 2027 update (autumn); news use during the 2028 US primary season.
What would prove it overhyped. A return to growth among under-30s.
8. TikTok search goes local and paid
What it is. People use TikTok’s search bar to find places, products and answers, and TikTok now sells that intent to advertisers.
Why it matters in 2027. Local discovery and product search are where search ad budgets sit, and where Google, Reddit and AI assistants compete.
The evidence.
- 49% of US consumers say they have used TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% in 2024; 65% of Gen Z have (Adobe Express survey of 807 consumers, January 2026, reported by Search Engine Journal).
- But only 4% of Gen Z say they rely on TikTok more than Google, down from 8% in 2024, and 14% of consumers rely on ChatGPT more than Google, twice the share for TikTok (same survey).
- TikTok launched Search Hubs, brand pages pinned at the top of search results (May 2026), and automated Search Ads campaigns (October 2026).
- “Must Eat” (October 31, 2026) ranks restaurants in New York, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area from more than 40 million TikTok posts, reviews and comments.
Stage: scaling. Axis score: 13/20 (adoption 3, momentum 3, maturity 3, barriers 4). Adoption is capped at 3 because the main surveys are vendor-funded.
Watch in 2027. Must Eat beyond three metros; TikTok search ad revenue disclosures.
What would prove it overhyped. AI chat tools overtaking TikTok as young people’s second stop after Google — the Adobe data already points that way.
9. Under-16s get locked out
What it is. National laws require platforms, TikTok first among them, to remove younger teens’ accounts.
Why it matters in 2027. TikTok’s youngest users are its most intense ones. For brands with teen audiences, logged-in reach in several countries is legally off-limits.
The evidence.
| Country / bloc | Rule | Status | TikTok-specific signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | No accounts under 16 | In force Dec 10, 2025 | Court action against five platforms, TikTok included, expected (minister, Oct 20, 2026); maximum penalty doubled to A$109.2m |
| Indonesia | Minimum age 16 | Rolling out since March 2026 | TikTok disabled 780,000 under-16 accounts by April 10, 2026 (ministry) |
| Malaysia | Registration from 16 | In force June 1, 2026 | — |
| Turkey | No service to under-15s | In force Nov 1, 2026 | — |
| United Kingdom | Minimum age under consideration | Consultation closed May 26, 2026 | 89% of parent respondents backed a legal minimum age (self-selected sample, GOV.UK) |
| European Union | DSA protection of minors | Preliminary findings Jul 24, 2026 | Commission wants minors’ accounts private by default and their posts out of the For You feed |
Do the bans work? Partly. In Australia, the share of under-16s holding a social media account fell from 52.4% to 42.1% three months after the ban, and the share using social media at all from 85.9% to 81.5% (eSafety Commissioner, July 31, 2026). TikTok’s ad reach, which counts adults only, is unaffected: Indonesia’s rose 33% in the year its rule took effect.
Stage: scaling. Axis score: 13/20 (adoption 2, momentum 5, maturity 3, barriers 3).
Watch in 2027. Australia’s Federal Court filings; the Commission’s final decision on minors; the UK government’s response to its consultation.
What would prove it overhyped. Courts striking down laws, or account ownership returning to pre-ban levels.
Alex Rivera: National user counts won’t warn you — Indonesia’s TikTok numbers kept climbing after its rule. Plan teen campaigns as if under-16s in Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia, and under-15s in Turkey, are out of reach for logged-in targeting, because legally they are.
Country detail: social media regulation statistics and Gen Z social media statistics.
10. Micro-dramas get their own app
What it is. One-minute scripted episodes, built for vertical phones and binge viewing.
Why it matters in 2027. Series build return visits that one-off virals don’t, and the format comes with paywalls and ad breaks.
The evidence.
- TikTok launched PineDrama, a standalone micro-drama app, in the US and Brazil on January 16, 2026, free and ad-free at launch.
- Inside the main app, TikTok now sells ads to media companies promoting “Mini Series” and “Mini Games” (TikTok World, May 13, 2026).
- Deloitte predicts in-app micro-series revenue will more than double from $3.8 billion in 2025 to $7.8 billion in 2026 (November 18, 2025). Omdia puts total micro-drama revenue, China included, at $11 billion in 2025 and $14 billion in 2026 — a different scope, not a contradiction.
Stage: emerging. Axis score: 10/20 (adoption 1, momentum 4, maturity 1, barriers 4). No PineDrama usage figures are published.
Watch in 2027. Whether PineDrama adds ads or paywalls; launches beyond the US and Brazil.
What would prove it overhyped. PineDrama folded back into the main app without disclosed usage.
Watch list: TikTok fatigue
The share of online adults who use TikTok has stayed between 34.9% and 36.3% for two years (36.1% in Q2 2026, GWI), and active users open it on 44% of days, against 56% for Instagram (Similarweb). Forrester predicts three in five consumers will use technology to escape technology in 2027. But TikTok’s official EU users grew 11.8% and its time per user still leads every platform. Axis score: 8/20. It stays on the watch list until an official count falls.
How Many People Will Use TikTok in 2027?
TikTok does not publish a global user count. Current figures are compiled on our TikTok statistics page; this section looks forward.
Why TikTok’s numbers disagree
| Measure | Value | What it counts | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult ad reach | 2.33 billion (Oct 2026), +17.4% | Users 18+ that TikTok’s ad tools say campaigns can reach; India excluded | TikTok ad tools via DataReportal |
| EU monthly active users | 189 million (H1 2026), +11.8% | Legally mandated DSA count, all ages | TikTok DSA report |
| Online adults using TikTok monthly | 36.1% (Q2 2026), 35.8% a year earlier | Survey of internet users 16+, ex-China | GWI via DataReportal |
| US users | More than 200 million (Jan 2026) | Company statement, all ages | TikTok USDS Joint Venture |
| US adults who use TikTok | 37% | Survey self-report | Pew Research Center |
Reach in TikTok’s ad tools grew 17.4% in a year; the only official user count grew 11.8%; the global survey barely moved. DataReportal notes that changes in reported reach may not reflect a change in active use.

| Oct 2024 | Jan 2025 | Apr 2025 | Jul 2025 | Oct 2025 | Jan 2026 | Apr 2026 | Jul 2026 | Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.69bn | 1.59bn | 1.84bn | 1.94bn | 1.99bn | 2.04bn | 2.21bn | 2.31bn | 2.33bn |

The Axis Base Case for October 2027
Formula: Ad reach (Oct 2027) = 2.33 billion × (1 + underlying user growth) × (1 + reach drift)
- Underlying user growth. The global survey implies about 1.7% (GWI usage share up 0.8% relative, plus internet growth of 0.9%); the EU’s official count implies 11.8%. The base case takes 4%, closer to the global signal because the EU is a small part of TikTok’s reach.
- Reach drift. The part of reach growth not explained by users. It was positive in 2026 (between 5% and 15%, depending on which usage signal is used), but reach grew only 0.9% in the latest quarter, below any plausible user growth. The base case sets drift to 0%.
| Scenario | User growth | Reach drift | Ad reach, Oct 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downside | 1.7% (global survey) | −5% (a correction like Q1 2025’s −5.7%) | 2.25 billion | −3.4% |
| Base | 4% | 0% | 2.42 billion | +4.0% |
| Upside | 11.8% (EU rate) | +5% | 2.74 billion | +17.4% |
Source: Axis Intelligence Research calculation from DataReportal Digital 2027, GWI and TikTok DSA reports. Inputs in the CSV.
Sensitivity. Each percentage point of user growth moves the 2027 figure by about 23 million adults; each point of reach drift by about 24 million. Age bans do not move this metric, because TikTok’s ad tools count adults only.
Position. No firm publishes a forecast for TikTok’s ad reach, so there is no consensus to sit inside. The base case matches the latest quarter’s pace, annualized (+3.6%), and sits far below 2026’s +17.4%.
Signposts. DataReportal’s January 2027 update: reach at or above 2.36 billion keeps the base case on track; a fall below 2.30 billion points to the downside. TikTok’s H2 2026 DSA report (around February 2027): EU growth above 6% a half-year supports the upside.

Forecast reconciliation: TikTok ad revenue
| Forecaster | Published | Base year | Horizon | Value | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WARC | March 2025 | 2024 | 2025 | $32.4bn | Global TikTok ad revenue |
| WARC | December 2025 | 2025 | 2027 | $45.2bn | Global TikTok ad revenue |
| eMarketer | September 2025 | 2025 | 2025 / 2026 / 2027 | $14.03bn / $17.17bn / $21.43bn | US net ad revenue |
| WARC | March 2025 | 2024 | 2026 | $13.4bn | US ad revenue (assumes no ban) |
The Axis reading. WARC’s two global figures, from different vintages, imply about 18% a year from 2025 to 2027; eMarketer’s US series implies about 24%. The widest gap is on the US in 2026: eMarketer’s $17.17 billion is 28% above WARC’s earlier $13.4 billion, driven mostly by vintage (WARC’s figure predates the ban’s resolution) and by what each counts as TikTok ad revenue. No audited TikTok revenue exists, so no forecaster can yet be graded. One caution for the US numbers: TikTok’s US ad reach fell in Q3 2026, after both forecasts were made.
How Do Gen Z, Millennials and Older Adults Use TikTok Differently?
- US teens (13–17): 68% use TikTok, 61% daily and 21% almost constantly (Pew, autumn 2025).
- US adults: 37% use TikTok, up from 21% in 2021 — 63% of adults under 30, 44% of those 30–49, 30% of those 50–64 and 12% of those 65 and older (Pew, 2025).
- Worldwide: 47.3% of women and 42.2% of men aged 16–24 online use TikTok monthly (GWI, Q2 2026). Adults aged 25–34 make up 42.7% of TikTok’s global ad audience, those 55+ 8.0%; in the US, the 55+ share is 19.5% (DataReportal).
- Why people open it: 80.3% of TikTok users go there for funny or entertaining content and 59.3% to follow or research brands, but only 28.9% to message friends and family (GWI, Q2 2026).

Which Countries Have the Most TikTok Users?
| Rank | Country | Adult ad reach, Oct 2026 | Change in latest quarter | Ad reach vs adult population | Online adults using TikTok (GWI) | Axis reach-to-use ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Indonesia | 240.1 million | +1.3% | 117.0% | 81.0% | 1.44 |
| 2 | Brazil | 152.1 million | +1.7% | 92.6% | 74.5% | 1.24 |
| 3 | United States | 149.9 million | −8.5% | 54.1% | 47.2% | 1.15 |
| 4 | Mexico | 111.8 million | +0.8% | 117.7% | 79.0% | 1.49 |
| 5 | Vietnam | 99.7 million | +2.5% | 133.5% | 77.6% | 1.72 |

Sources: TikTok ad tools via DataReportal, Digital 2027 (October 2026); GWI, Q2 2026. Reach-to-use ratio: Axis Intelligence Research calculation. EU: 189 million monthly users (official DSA count, H1 2026), Germany 28.9 million.
How far do TikTok’s ad tools overstate real use? The Axis reach-to-use ratio divides the share of all adults that TikTok’s ad tools say they reach by the share of online adults who tell GWI they used TikTok in the past month. Online adults are a subset of all adults, so the true share of all adults using TikTok cannot be higher than the GWI figure. A ratio above 1.0 is therefore a floor on how much the ad tools overcount, not an estimate of it.
- Vietnam (1.72), Mexico (1.49), Thailand (1.45) and Indonesia (1.44) show the widest gaps: ad tools count at least 44% to 72% more adults than the survey can account for. Duplicate accounts, shared phones and users who misstate their age all push reach up.
- The United States (1.15) has the smallest gap among large markets. Less inflated reach leaves less room for an account clean-up to explain its −8.5% quarterly drop, though DataReportal gives no cause.
- Nigeria (0.53) runs the other way. GWI surveys connected, mostly urban adults, while the ad tools see a smaller, ad-addressable base; both readings are true for different populations.
- Ten countries hold 48.7% of TikTok’s global ad reach (1.13 billion of 2.33 billion); Indonesia alone holds 10.3%.
For campaign planning, read reach in high-ratio markets as an upper bound and size budgets on survey use or first-party results.
Across all 50 countries with both measures, the widest gaps sit outside the top 10: Saudi Arabia (2.14), the United Arab Emirates (1.91), Malaysia (1.90) and Japan (1.83). The worldwide ratio is 1.09 (39.5% of adults reached by ads, 36.1% of online adults using TikTok). The dataset gives every country’s ratio, with its ad reach rate, monthly use and daily time in the app (Similarweb, August 2026): from 2 h 43 min a day in Russia and 2 h 42 min in Peru to 28 minutes in Japan.
Where TikTok is used most, by share of online adults: Nigeria (88.9%), the Philippines (84.8%) and Thailand (82.0%), against 47.2% in the US, 41.3% in the UK and 26.0% in Japan (GWI, Q2 2026). The extreme cases sit outside the top 10: reported reach equals 175% of adults in Saudi Arabia and 140% in Malaysia.

Axis reading of each list.
Where Axis rates differently, and why. The three “absent” trends are the most regulatory and the least marketing-friendly, which is why brand-side lists skip them. Each rests on primary evidence: a closed transaction, ministry enforcement figures and a Pew survey. Axis rates fatigue lower than Forrester and TikTok’s own “end of autopilot” framing because the only official count still rises.
What Could Change This Outlook?
Downside. A final EU DSA decision forcing feed changes; Australian court penalties; another quarter of falling US reach; a dispute over the US algorithm licence.
Upside. TikTok Shop sustaining near-doubling growth into 2027; agentic checkout lifting conversion; EU user growth above 6% a half-year.
Dated signals: Black Friday–Cyber Monday (Nov 27–30, 2026); DataReportal 2027 country reports (from mid-Nov 2026); TikTok Next 2027 (expected around January 2027); DataReportal’s January 2027 update; TikTok’s H2 2026 DSA report (around February 2027); Australia’s Federal Court filings; Pew’s 2027 news survey (autumn 2027).
Methodology
Search intent. Results for “tiktok trends” are dominated by monthly viral-trend calendars, while “2027” queries add marketers’ forecasts and platform outlooks. The page leads with structural trends, gives culture its own section, and leaves current statistics to our TikTok statistics page.
Axis Trend Scorecard. Same grid as our social media trends 2027 outlook. Adoption: 5 = 1 billion+ people or over 50% of a measured population; 4 = 100 million–1 billion or 30–50%; 3 = 10–100 million or 15–30%; 2 = under 15%; 1 = intention only. Intention surveys and vendor-funded surveys are capped at 3. Momentum: measured year-on-year growth, 5 = over 50%, 4 = 20–50%, 3 = 10–20% or recent launches and rules with no growth rate, 2 = 3–10%, 1 = 0–3%, 0 = falling; forecasts are capped at 4. Maturity: 1 emerging, 3 scaling, 5 mainstream. Barriers (inverted): 5 none, 3 some regulatory, trust or cost friction, 1 strong. Total out of 20.
Reach-to-use ratio. Ratio = (TikTok ad reach 18+ ÷ population 18+) ÷ (share of internet users 16+ who used TikTok in the past month). Numerator from TikTok’s ad tools via DataReportal (Digital 2027, slide 652); denominator from GWI Q2 2026 (slide 640). Because online adults are a subset of all adults, a ratio above 1.0 is a lower bound on overcounting. Age bands differ slightly (18+ vs 16+), and GWI samples skew online and urban in emerging markets; Pakistan and Bangladesh are not in GWI’s survey.
Base case. Reach₂₀₂₇ = 2.33 billion × (1 + u) × (1 + r); base u = 4%, r = 0%. All reach values come from TikTok’s ad tools as compiled by DataReportal in its Digital 2026 country reports and Digital 2027 Global Overview (published October 21, 2026).
Data collection. Figures fetched or read October 31 to November 2, 2026 from DataReportal’s Digital 2027 report (with GWI, Similarweb and Statista data), TikTok (DSA reports, newsroom posts of May 13 and October 5, 2026, TikTok Next), the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, the European Commission, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, Pew Research Center, Momentum Works, WARC, eMarketer, Deloitte, Omdia, Forrester, Hootsuite, Adobe Express (via Search Engine Journal) and company filings reported by Forbes and The Information.
Limitations. TikTok publishes no global user count or audited group revenue. TikTok Shop GMV is a third-party estimate. ByteDance figures are reported, not audited. Pew data is US-only. Several surveys cited (Adobe Express, Kantar as cited by TikTok, PF Global) are vendor-funded or commissioned.
Grade-back commitment. Axis Intelligence Research will compare its base case with DataReportal’s October 2027 TikTok reach figure, and re-score every trend, in the 2028 edition of this page.
