Grand Theft Auto V has sold-in over 230 million units, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said on the August 7, 2026 earnings call. That is 20.5 times the 11.21 million copies the game sold in its first 24 hours in September 2013, and it works out to about 17.8 million units a year for 12.89 years.

Quick Answer

GTA 5 has sold-in over 230 million units worldwide as of August 7, 2026, per Take-Two Interactive. Grand Theft Auto products generated 12.4% of Take-Two’s FY2026 net revenue, about $825.4 million by an Axis Intelligence Research calculation. Each GTA V copy ever sold-in produced $3.67 of GTA revenue in FY2026, down 45.9% from FY2021.

Key Findings

  • GTA V passed over 230 million units sold-in by August 7, 2026, up from over 225 million in Take-Two’s FY2026 Form 10-K filed May 21, 2026.
  • Take-Two’s annual 10-K filings show GTA V adding 100 million units between May 2020 and May 2026, an average of 16.7 million per fiscal year, per Axis Intelligence Research.
  • Grand Theft Auto products contributed 12.4% of Take-Two’s FY2026 net revenue of $6,656.4 million, down from 30.9% in FY2022, per Take-Two 10-K filings.
  • The GTA Installed-Base Yield (GIY), an Axis Intelligence Research metric, fell from $6.79 per installed GTA V copy in FY2021 to a low of $3.38 in FY2025, then rose to $3.67 in FY2026.
  • GTA Online recurrent consumer spending rose 27% year over year in Take-Two’s fiscal third quarter ended December 31, 2025, per Take-Two’s results summary.

How Many Copies Has GTA 5 Sold?

Over 230 million units sold-in, according to Strauss Zelnick’s prepared remarks on Take-Two’s Q1 FY2027 earnings call on August 7, 2026. “Sold-in” means units shipped or sold to retailers and digital storefronts, not copies confirmed in players’ hands.

The previous figure, over 225 million, appears in Take-Two’s FY2026 Form 10-K filed May 21, 2026. A lot of sites still quote 225 million. It is no longer the current number.

GTA 5 Sales by Year: What Take-Two’s 10-K Filings Show

Take-Two restates the GTA V total in every annual report. Lined up, those seven filings form the cleanest public sales history of the game, because each figure comes from the same document type at the same point in the year.

“Added since prior 10-K” is an Axis Intelligence Research subtraction. Take-Two reports floors (“over 145 million”), so each yearly increment is approximate to within a few million units.

Here is the part that rarely gets said. The game did not fade. From FY2022 through FY2026 it added 15 million units almost every single year, a flat line at an age when most blockbusters sell in the low single-digit millions. The sell-in pace for the whole stretch, 16.7 million a year, sits just under the lifetime average of 17.8 million. A game launched in 2013 running near its own lifetime average is the real record here.

How Does GTA 5 Compare With Other Rockstar Games?

GTA V accounts for 48.4% of all Grand Theft Auto units ever sold-in (over 225 million of over 465 million in the FY2026 10-K), and it has sold-in 2.81 times as many units as Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s next-biggest game at more than 80 million. Both ratios are Axis Intelligence Research calculations from the same filing.

How Much Money Has GTA 5 Made?

Take-Two does not publish a GTA V revenue line, and no Take-Two filing reports a lifetime figure for the game. Any “lifetime revenue” total you see is an outside estimate. What the filings do give, year after year, is the share of Take-Two’s net revenue that came from “Grand Theft Auto products”, a bucket that covers GTA V, GTA Online and the rest of the series.

Multiply that share by Take-Two’s GAAP net revenue and you get a defensible, filing-based figure for each year:

Fiscal year (ends March 31)GTA products share of net revenueTake-Two GAAP net revenueImplied GTA products net revenue (Axis calc)Source
FY202023.0%$3,089 million$710.5 millionTake-Two 10-K FY2020; FY2021 earnings release

FY202612.4%$6,656.4 million$825.4 millionTake-Two 10-K FY2026; FY2026 earnings release

Added up, Grand Theft Auto products generated $5,881.1 million of Take-Two net revenue across the seven fiscal years from FY2020 to FY2026, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation. That is the closest thing to a filing-based revenue total for the GTA V era that exists in public.

The FY2021 number matters for anyone who has read other GTA pages. That $984.9 million is the figure often repeated as “GTA Online microtransactions in 2021”. It is not. It is all Grand Theft Auto products revenue, full-game sales included, as the 10-K defines it. Our own June 2026 version of this page made the same mistake, and it is corrected below. The same goes for the “$710 million GTA Online revenue in FY2025” seen on several sites: 12.6% of $5,633.6 million is $709.8 million, which is again every GTA product, not GTA Online alone.

Between FY2022 and FY2026, implied GTA products revenue fell 23.8%, while Take-Two’s total revenue nearly doubled after the Zynga acquisition. That is why the GTA share dropped from 30.9% to 12.4%: the denominator exploded, and the GTA line drifted down.

GTA 5 Launch Revenue: The Records It Broke in 2013

According to Guinness World Records, GTA V generated $815.7 million in its first 24 hours after its September 17, 2013 release and reached $1 billion in three days, on September 20, 2013.

Record (Guinness World Records, Oct 8, 2013)GTA V figure
Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours$815.7 million
Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours$815.7 million
Best-selling videogame in 24 hours11.21 million units
Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours11.21 million units
Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billionthree days
Fastest videogame to gross $1 billionthree days
Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogameGTA V trailer

A detail almost every summary misses: the Guinness headline says six records, but its own numbered list contains seven. Day-one revenue per copy works out to $72.77, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation ($815.7 million divided by 11.21 million units).

How Much Does GTA Online Make?

Take-Two does not disclose GTA Online revenue in dollars. It does disclose growth in recurrent consumer spending, which Take-Two defines as virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases and in-game advertising. For GTA, the latest readings are:

PeriodGTA metricValueSource

The 27% jump came in the same quarter Take-Two’s overall recurrent consumer spending grew 23%. GTA Online, 13.0 years after its October 1, 2013 launch, outgrew the company average. Rockstar kept feeding it: the Kortz Center Heist arrived on July 14, 2026, along with the Rockstar Mission Creator tools, per Take-Two’s August call.

Daily revenue figures for GTA Online that circulate online trace back to a leak of internal Rockstar data published in April 2026. That material is unauthorized and unverified, and this page does not use it.

Does Take-Two Count Full Platform Prices as Revenue?

No. Take-Two’s FY2026 10-K states that sales through PlayStation Network, Xbox and Steam are recorded net of the storefront’s fees, because Take-Two is not the principal in those transactions. Every revenue number on this page is therefore smaller than what players actually paid at checkout.

GTA Installed-Base Yield (GIY): How Much Each GTA 5 Copy Still Earns

The GTA Installed-Base Yield (GIY) is an Axis Intelligence Research metric: implied Grand Theft Auto products net revenue in a fiscal year, divided by cumulative GTA V units sold-in reported in that year’s 10-K. It answers one question: how many dollars of GTA revenue does each copy ever shipped still generate per year?

Fiscal yearImplied GTA products revenueGTA V installed base (10-K)GIY
FY2020$710.5 millionover 125 million$5.68
FY2021$984.9 millionover 145 million$6.79
FY2022$1,083.0 millionover 160 million$6.77
FY2023$781.1 millionover 180 million$4.34
FY2024$786.4 millionover 195 million$4.03
FY2025$709.8 millionover 210 million$3.38
FY2026$825.4 millionover 225 million$3.67

Formula: GIY = (GTA share of net revenue x Take-Two GAAP net revenue) / GTA V units sold-in. Example for FY2026: 12.4% x $6,656.4 million = $825.4 million, divided by 225 million units = $3.67.

What the reading says: the installed base kept growing, but the revenue it throws off per copy fell 45.9% between FY2021 and FY2026. The per-copy take slid four years in a row to a low of $3.38 in FY2025, then rose 8.6% in FY2026, the year GTA Online posted quarters like the 27% one above. That FY2026 uptick is the first year-over-year rise in the series since FY2021. For GTA VI, the takeaway is simple. GTA V’s long tail was built on volume, not on rising spend per player.

What GIY does not capture: the numerator includes every GTA product (not only GTA V and GTA Online), the denominator counts sell-in rather than active players, and the 10-K unit figures are floors. GIY replaces the Revenue Durability Score (RDS) published on this page in June 2026, which was retired because its inputs could not be sourced.

How Many People Play GTA 5 in 2026?

Neither Take-Two nor Rockstar publishes monthly active users for GTA V. The most recent measured figure available for this update comes from Newzoo, which estimates that GTA V held a 13.8% share of console players in 2026, out of 651 million console players worldwide, per its Global Games Market Report 2026 (September 2026). Both are measurement-firm estimates.

Player-count figures that circulate without a primary source, including “18.3 million monthly players” and a “31.4 million peak”, were removed from this page in October 2026 because no original measurement could be found.

On PC, Rockstar released a free upgrade of GTA V on March 4, 2025, bringing the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S features to PC, per the Rockstar Newswire.

GTA 5 vs GTA 6: The Confirmed Numbers

GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026, 31 days after this update and 13.2 years after GTA V, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Take-Two’s August 7, 2026 earnings release. The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition $99.99, per Rockstar’s June 24, 2026 press release. Take-Two guides FY2027 net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion, about 20% growth at the midpoint.

The benchmark GTA VI has to beat is GTA V’s 11.21 million units and $815.7 million in 24 hours. Projections for GTA VI live on our GTA 6 revenue statistics page; launch facts and Take-Two guidance on GTA 6 statistics.

Methodology

Axis Intelligence Research built this page from Take-Two Interactive’s SEC filings (Forms 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K for fiscal 2020 through Q1 fiscal 2027), Take-Two’s investor-relations call materials, Guinness World Records’ October 8, 2013 confirmation, the Rockstar Newswire and Newzoo’s 2026 market report. All were retrieved on October 19, 2026.

Unit figures are sell-in floors as Take-Two states them. Implied revenue uses the 10-K “Grand Theft Auto products” share, which covers every GTA title, multiplied by GAAP net revenue, so it is not a GTA V-only number. GAAP net revenue includes changes in deferred revenue and is recorded net of storefront fees. GIY uses only those inputs and is reproducible from the CSV. Leaked internal data, aggregator trackers and per-title “lifetime revenue” estimates were excluded.

Correction, October 19, 2026: An earlier version of this page (June 22, 2026) contained several errors. It dated the 230 million figure to May 2026; Take-Two disclosed it on August 7, 2026 (the May 2026 10-K states over 225 million). It listed 200 million in March 2024 and 215 million in May 2025; Take-Two’s 10-Ks filed in May 2024 and May 2025 state over 195 million and over 210 million. It described $985 million as FY2021 GTA Online microtransactions; that figure equals total Grand Theft Auto products revenue implied by the FY2021 10-K. It stated Red Dead Redemption 2 sales of 65 million; the FY2026 10-K states more than 80 million. It cited a “most-liked trailer” record; Guinness lists “most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame”. The Revenue Durability Score (RDS, 63.9%) was retired because its inputs could not be sourced. Lifetime revenue, player-count, Twitch and budget figures without a primary source, data from an unauthorized leak, aggregator estimates and analyst projections for GTA VI were removed.
