Quick Answer:

The global cryptocurrency market cap stood at approximately $2.4 trillion at the close of Q1 2026, down 20.4% quarter-on-quarter from $3.0 trillion in Q4 2025. Bitcoin held 57.3% market dominance across 17,402 tracked coins. Roughly 560 million people worldwide owned at least one cryptocurrency as of early 2026 — 9.9% of the global connected population — up from 420 million in 2023. The February 2025 Bybit hack alone accounted for $1.5 billion of the $3.4 billion stolen across the full year 2025, making it the largest single crypto theft in history.

Key Findings

  1. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization reached $2.4 trillion at the end of Q1 2026, a 20.4% drop from Q4 2025’s close, driven primarily by macroeconomic uncertainty following the nomination of a hawkish Federal Reserve chair in January 2026 (CoinGecko, Q1 2026).
  2. Bitcoin’s all-time high of $126,210 was set on October 6, 2025, before a post-peak correction dragged the price down to around $60,074 by February 2026 — a 52.4% drawdown in under five months (CoinMarketCap, 2025–2026).
  3. North Korean hackers stole $2.02 billion from the crypto sector in 2025 alone, with their cumulative total since 2017 now reaching $6.75 billion — the Bybit hack, attributed to the Lazarus Group, accounted for $1.5 billion of that haul in a single incident (Chainalysis 2026 Crypto Crime Report).
  4. The combined stablecoin market reached $317 billion by April 2026, with USDT alone holding a 60.4% share ($187 billion) and USDC at $75.6 billion — stablecoins now process more annual transaction volume than Visa and Mastercard combined in 2024 (Federal Reserve FEDS Notes, April 2026).
  5. Spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively held over 1.5 million BTC (7.1% of the 21-million supply cap) as of Q1 2026, with BlackRock’s IBIT commanding approximately $54 billion in assets under management and roughly 49% of the U.S. spot BTC ETF market (Investing.com, March 2026).

Axis Intelligence Research Proprietary Metric: Crypto Security Concentration Index™

What it measures: Axis Intelligence Research calculated the proportion of annual crypto theft attributable to the single largest hack event for each year from 2022 through 2025, using Chainalysis annual crime reports and The Block’s incident trackers as primary inputs. This “top-hack concentration ratio” reveals how exposure has shifted from distributed attacks to catastrophic single-incident risk.

YearTotal Stolen (Services)Largest Single HackConcentration Ratio
2022$3.8BRonin Network: $624M16.4%
2023$1.7BEuler Finance: $197M11.6%
2024$2.2BWazirX: $235M10.7%
2025$3.4BBybit: $1.5B44.1%

Finding: The 2025 Crypto Security Concentration Index™ reached 44.1% — a figure Axis Intelligence Research has not found published elsewhere in this form. The jump from the 2022–2024 range of 10–16% to 44% in a single year signals a structural shift: crypto theft risk is no longer broadly distributed across dozens of mid-tier incidents. It is consolidating into rare, catastrophic state-sponsored operations. For institutional risk managers, this changes the tail-risk calculus entirely. A single exchange intrusion now accounts for nearly half the sector’s annual losses.

Formula: Concentration Ratio = (Largest single hack value / Total annual theft from services) × 100 Primary inputs: Chainalysis 2026 Crypto Crime Report; The Block’s 2025 Crypto Hacks analysis; Chainalysis 2023 and 2024 annual crime reports. License: CC BY 4.0 — Axis Intelligence Research, 2026.

Global Cryptocurrency Market Cap Statistics 2026

The headline number that most crypto dashboards display today — around $2.4 trillion — hides a lot of turbulence. According to CoinGecko’s global market cap charts, the market peaked near $3.8 trillion in early 2026 before contracting to $2.4 trillion by the end of Q1. What drove the drawdown wasn’t a failure in crypto fundamentals. It was Kevin Warsh’s mid-January nomination as Federal Reserve chair, which markets read as a signal that the rate cuts of late 2025 might stall or reverse.

That’s worth sitting with for a moment. A regulatory nomination in Washington moved a $3 trillion asset class by $600 billion in three months. The institutional wiring that lets macro sentiment swing crypto this hard is relatively new — and it runs in both directions.

Bitcoin Dominance Statistics 2026

Bitcoin’s market dominance sat at 57.3% across 17,402 tracked coins and 1,477 exchanges as of Q1 2026 close, per CoinGecko’s global data. That’s the highest dominance reading since 2021, reflecting a flight-to-quality dynamic within crypto itself: when altcoins sell off, they tend to sell off harder. Ethereum held roughly 10% of the market. The remaining 32.7% was split across stablecoins, Layer-1 blockchains, DeFi tokens, and a long tail of speculative assets.

The top 10 assets by market cap represented approximately 82% of the total market as of April 2026. Bitcoin and Ethereum have held the top two spots since 2017. Below them, Solana and XRP have demonstrated structural staying power, while the lower half of the top 10 rotates meaningfully every 12–24 months.

Bitcoin Price Statistics 2025–2026

Bitcoin’s price history in 2025 was, to use a phrase I reserve for when it genuinely fits: dramatic. It crossed $100,000 in late 2024. Then it did it four more times in 2025, each time higher.

The October 6 peak was followed by a drawdown that took Bitcoin below $65,000 by end-January 2026 and to $60,074 in February — a 52.4% correction from the ATH. The pattern mirrors prior cycles, but this one carried institutional holders who didn’t panic-sell the way retail did in 2021. The Bitcoin ETF complex absorbed the correction without catastrophic outflows, which is new information about the market’s structural resilience.

Bitcoin Halving and Supply Economics

The April 2024 halving reduced the block subsidy from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. As of Q1 2026, approximately 19.7 million of the 21-million fixed supply had been mined. TRM Labs’ 2025 Crypto Adoption and Stablecoin Usage Report documented that ETF demand absorbed more than 1.2 times the newly mined Bitcoin supply throughout 2025 — a structural asymmetry that drove the price cycle. New supply from mining runs at roughly 450 BTC per day post-halving; institutional ETF demand ran well above that pace for most of the year.

Cryptocurrency Adoption Statistics 2026

Global Crypto Ownership

Approximately 560 million people worldwide owned at least one cryptocurrency as of early 2026, representing 9.9% of the global connected population. TRM Labs’ Q1 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, which derives country-level figures from on-chain VASP data combined with web traffic analysis, showed the U.S. alone accounting for $212 billion in retail crypto transaction volume — nearly three times the next largest market. The growth is real, but the 9.9% penetration rate also means roughly 90% of the internet-connected world still hasn’t bought a single satoshi.

According to Axis Intelligence Research’s analysis of multiple adoption trackers, the demographic profile has shifted meaningfully since 2023. Men aged 25–34 remain the most active segment globally. Female participation grew fastest in the 25–34 bracket in 2025, up approximately 20% year-over-year. The average global crypto holder is 34.8 years old with a median portfolio value of $1,300.

The Chainalysis 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index — which weights adoption by PPP-adjusted GDP per capita to capture grassroots usage, not just institutional flows — ranked India #1 and Nigeria #2. Seven of the top 10 were in Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa recorded stablecoin volume growth of over 180% year-over-year, with use cases centered on remittances, merchant payments, and savings dollarization.

Commentary — Sarah Davis:

The Turkey number is the one I find most clarifying about what crypto actually is for most of the world’s adopters. A 25.6% ownership rate in a country where the lira has depreciated over 80% in five years isn’t a story about blockchain enthusiasm. It’s a story about people finding a working alternative to a monetary system that’s failing them. That same pattern explains Nigeria, Argentina, and Venezuela. When inflation is genuinely eroding savings, a volatile asset is still better than a certain loss. That’s the actual use case driving the majority of new users in 2025 and 2026, and it’s almost entirely absent from the institutional ETF narrative that dominates English-language coverage.

U.S. Cryptocurrency Adoption Statistics

About 30% of American adults — approximately 70.4 million people — owned cryptocurrency in 2026 according to Security.org’s annual report. Of those, 61% planned to buy more during the year. Bitcoin remained the most widely held asset at 74% of owners. Millennials represented 57% of all U.S. crypto owners, Gen X 20%, Gen Z 13%, and Baby Boomers 10%.

Bitcoin ETF Statistics 2026

U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETF Market

The U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF complex collectively held roughly $113.8 billion in assets with $56.9 billion in cumulative net inflows since launch in January 2024 — still the fastest a new ETF category has ever reached $100 billion in the United States. BlackRock’s IBIT dominated. According to Investing.com’s institutional flow analysis for April 2026, IBIT’s AUM stood at approximately $54 billion in March 2026, commanding roughly 49% of the entire U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF market. Fidelity’s FBTC held the number-two position at $17–18 billion. Grayscale’s GBTC had suffered approximately $17.5 billion in cumulative net outflows as investors rotated to lower-fee alternatives.

Note on 2026 inflow pace: Through late May 2026, net inflows for the year totaled approximately $536 million — running far behind 2025’s $25 billion annual pace. IBIT accounted for $2.7 billion of 2026 inflows, meaning without BlackRock’s fund, the entire category would have been net-negative year-to-date. That’s a number worth marking.

Commentary — Sarah Davis:

$536 million in total net inflows through May, against $25 billion for all of 2025. The category didn’t break — redemptions were orderly and total assets held. But the pace collapsed, and the IBIT-dominated picture tells you something about how concentrated institutional conviction is. One fund. One issuer. Seventy percent of April’s category inflows. That’s not a healthy distribution for something the marketing decks call an “ecosystem.” What happens to the smaller funds if another -52% correction arrives is a question nobody’s really answered.

Stablecoin Statistics 2026

Stablecoins have quietly become one of the most consequential financial instruments in the world. The Federal Reserve’s April 2026 FEDS Notes on stablecoins confirmed the combined stablecoin market capitalization reached $317 billion as of April 6, 2026 — more than a 50% increase since early 2025, driven in part by the GENIUS Act signing in July 2025.

TRM Labs’ 2025 Crypto Adoption and Stablecoin Usage Report documented stablecoin transaction volume surpassing $4 trillion through the first seven months of 2025 alone, growing 83% year-over-year. For context: Visa and Mastercard’s combined transaction volume in 2024 ran at roughly $15 trillion annually. Stablecoins are closing that gap faster than the traditional payment networks would prefer to acknowledge.

A detail that rarely surfaces in mainstream stablecoin coverage: BIS Working Paper No. 1270 published in Q1 2026 calculated that Tether’s Treasury bill exposure of roughly $113 billion as of Q4 2024 would rank the company around the 18th largest sovereign holder of U.S. government debt globally. Stablecoin issuers as a category rank as the seventh-largest buyer of U.S. government debt according to Arkham Research. A private company issuing a dollar-pegged token has become a meaningful participant in the mechanics of U.S. fiscal policy. The GENIUS Act, signed into law on July 18, 2025, attempts to put guardrails around exactly this dynamic.

Cryptocurrency Regulation Statistics 2026

The regulatory map solidified significantly in 2025. The World Economic Forum’s analysis of the GENIUS Act noted it was the United States’ first major legislative step toward stablecoin regulation, passed 308 to 122 by the House on July 17, 2025 and signed the following day. Stablecoin usage had grown 28% in the year prior to passage, with transaction volumes surpassing Visa and Mastercard combined in 2024.

137 countries were actively exploring CBDCs as of 2026, with 11 running live pilot programs and 9 having fully launched. The United States notably enacted the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act, prohibiting the Federal Reserve from issuing a U.S. CBDC.

The GENIUS Act and MiCA agree on the principle of 100% backing with liquid reserves and redemption rights. They disagree on exactly what counts as a qualifying reserve asset — and that tension means a single reserve pool cannot simultaneously satisfy both frameworks. For any stablecoin issuer operating across both the U.S. and EU, that’s a real operational problem, not a theoretical one.

Cryptocurrency Security & Hack Statistics 2025–2026

2025 was the worst year on record for crypto theft, and the numbers require careful handling. The headline figure — $3.4 billion stolen from services — comes from Chainalysis’s 2026 Crypto Crime Report, which found illicit cryptocurrency addresses received at least $154 billion across the full year when including sanctions evasion ($104 billion) and scams ($17 billion). That 162% year-over-year increase looks alarming until you note it still represents under 1% of all attributed crypto transaction volume.

The Bybit hack on February 21, 2025 is the anchor of the whole story. Chainalysis’s detailed incident analysis confirmed North Korea’s Lazarus Group drained approximately 401,000 ETH — $1.5 billion at the time — from Safe-based multisig wallets. The attack vector was a compromised Safe developer’s computer used to inject malicious JavaScript into the transaction signing interface. Bybit was signing what looked like a routine transfer to a hot wallet. It wasn’t.

North Korea’s cumulative cryptocurrency theft since 2017 now totals $6.75 billion (Chainalysis). The regime uses these funds to finance its nuclear weapons program, circumventing international sanctions. The 2025 trajectory — fewer incidents, far greater total value — reflects a strategic shift toward rare but catastrophic operations. DPRK laundering patterns are distinctive: funds move in tranches below $500,000 on-chain, despite the billion-dollar scale of the initial theft.

Commentary — Sarah Davis:

The $154 billion illicit volume figure is the one that tends to get passed around out of context. So here’s the context: it’s 162% higher than 2024, but it still represents under 1% of all attributed crypto transaction volume, and nearly two-thirds of it is sanctions evasion — which is a function of U.S. and EU policy as much as it is a function of crypto. The $3.4 billion in service theft is the number that should worry institutional risk managers, and specifically the Bybit incident. A state-sponsored actor compromised a developer’s computer, not the exchange’s core systems. That threat model doesn’t care how good your internal security is if your supply chain is exposed.

DeFi Statistics 2026

CoinLaw’s DeFi Market Statistics, updated June 18, 2026, placed total DeFi value locked at $71.77 billion across 453 chains — down 37.3% from the $114.49 billion recorded on January 1, 2026. The year-to-date peak was $127.75 billion on January 18, before a sustained drawdown correlated with the broader crypto market correction.

Ethereum held 53.1% of DeFi TVL, maintaining its structural dominance. The 2026 TVL drawdown, while severe in percentage terms, is materially smaller than the 2021–2022 bear market contraction — a signal that DeFi has built some institutional resilience, even as attack surface remains elevated.

Q2 2026 was the most-hacked quarter on record by incident count: 83 exploits targeting crypto protocols, with approximately $755 million in total losses per CryptoRank. That’s roughly one exploited protocol per day. Yet the total stolen per quarter remains far below the catastrophic levels of 2022 ($3.56 billion in Q4). DeFi’s security infrastructure has improved at the protocol level; the attack surface has expanded at the perimeter.

The Venus Protocol incident of September 2025 showed what improved security looks like in practice. Security monitoring platform Hexagate detected suspicious activity 18 hours before the attack. Venus paused operations, recovered funds within hours, and a governance vote subsequently froze $3 million still controlled by the attacker — who ultimately lost money on the exploit. That’s a different DeFi security story than 2021.

Cryptocurrency Mining Statistics 2026

Bitcoin Energy Consumption

Cambridge Judge Business School’s publication of the Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report on April 28, 2025 estimated Bitcoin mining’s annual electricity consumption at approximately 138 TWh — roughly 0.5% of global electricity consumption — based on data covering 48% of global mining activity. A September 2025 CCAF update revised the annualized figure upward to 211.58 TWh, comparable to Thailand’s national demand, as more mining operations were captured in the survey.

The coal displacement story is the most significant environmental data point in Bitcoin mining’s recent history. Coal’s share fell from 36.6% to 8.9% in three years — driven almost entirely by China’s mining ban pushing operations to the U.S. and Canada. North America now accounts for 75.4% of reported global mining activity, with the U.S. at 75.4% of that total and Canada at 7.1%.

Commentary — Sarah Davis:

The 52.4% sustainable energy figure from CCAF is more reliable than the Bitcoin Mining Council’s 60–70% range because CCAF uses third-party verification rather than self-reporting. Still, the direction is clearly improving, and the coal story is genuinely significant. The migration from China to North America accidentally accomplished something years of ESG pressure hadn’t: it cut coal exposure by 27 percentage points. That’s not a planned energy transition. It’s a regulatory accident with a favorable environmental outcome.

Cryptocurrency Trading Volume Statistics 2026

Daily crypto trading volume averaged $264.5 billion through 2025 across spot and derivatives markets. Derivatives dominated. The single highest-volume session came on October 10, 2025, when a $19 billion liquidation cascade triggered $748 billion in total volume — the largest single-session in crypto history, occurring four days after Bitcoin’s ATH.

Spot-only daily volume in Q1 2025 averaged $146 billion, down 27.3% from $200.7 billion in Q4 2024, per CoinGecko’s 2025 annual report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current total cryptocurrency market cap in 2026?

The global cryptocurrency market cap closed Q1 2026 at approximately $2.4 trillion, down 20.4% from the prior quarter’s close per CoinGecko. Bitcoin accounted for 57.3% of that total. The market peaked near $3.8 trillion in early 2026 before the correction, and Bitcoin itself reached $126,210 on October 6, 2025 — its all-time high.

How many people own cryptocurrency in 2026?

Approximately 560 million people worldwide owned at least one cryptocurrency as of early 2026, representing about 9.9% of the global connected population. That’s up from 420 million in 2023, a 33% increase in three years. India leads in absolute users (approximately 156 million), the United States leads in adult ownership rate (around 30% of adults).

What was the largest crypto hack in history?

The February 21, 2025 Bybit hack — attributed to North Korea’s Lazarus Group — is the largest single crypto theft in history. Attackers drained approximately 401,000 ETH worth $1.5 billion at the time, exploiting a compromised developer computer to manipulate the transaction signing process. The funds were rapidly dispersed across fresh addresses to obscure tracing.

What is the GENIUS Act and how does it affect crypto?

The GENIUS Act (Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins) was signed into law on July 18, 2025 as the United States’ first comprehensive federal stablecoin framework. It requires 100% reserve backing in cash or short-term Treasuries, mandatory monthly public disclosures, and restricts issuance to licensed entities. Full enforcement is targeted for January 2027. The EU’s equivalent — MiCA — came fully into force on December 30, 2024.

What is the difference between Bitcoin ETF inflows in 2025 vs. 2026?

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed $25 billion in net inflows over the course of 2025. Through late May 2026, total net inflows were approximately $536 million year-to-date — a pace running far behind 2025. BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for $2.7 billion of 2026 inflows, meaning the rest of the category was in net outflow territory without IBIT’s contribution.

How much of Bitcoin mining uses renewable energy?

According to the Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report published April 28, 2025, 52.4% of Bitcoin’s energy mix came from sustainable sources — 42.6% renewables (hydropower, wind, solar) and 9.8% nuclear. Coal’s share fell from 36.6% in 2022 to 8.9%, largely as a result of China’s mining ban pushing operations to North America. The U.S. now accounts for 75.4% of global reported mining activity.

Which countries have the highest cryptocurrency adoption rates?

Turkey leads at 25.6% of its internet population, followed by the Philippines (22–23%), Brazil (20.6%), and South Africa (19.6%). These rates reflect inflation hedging, remittances, and weak local currencies as primary drivers. The Chainalysis 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, which weights by PPP-adjusted GDP to capture grassroots usage, ranked India #1 and Nigeria #2.

What is the total stablecoin market cap in 2026?

The combined stablecoin market reached $317 billion as of April 6, 2026, according to the Federal Reserve’s FEDS Notes. Tether’s USDT held $187 billion (60.4% share); Circle’s USDC held $75.6 billion. Stablecoins processed over $4 trillion in transaction volume through the first seven months of 2025 — an 83% year-over-year increase per TRM Labs.

How much crypto was stolen in 2025?

Chainalysis’s 2026 Crypto Crime Report documented $3.4 billion stolen from crypto services in 2025 — the highest figure on record. North Korean hackers accounted for $2.02 billion of that total, with the $1.5 billion Bybit hack alone representing 44.1% of all service theft for the year per Axis Intelligence Research’s Crypto Security Concentration Index™.

Is DeFi declining in 2026?

DeFi TVL fell approximately 37% in 2026 to $71.77 billion from $114.49 billion at the start of the year per CoinLaw’s June 18, 2026 data. The decline tracks the broader crypto market correction and was amplified by security incidents — Q2 2026 recorded 83 exploits. However, per-incident losses remain far below the record quarters of 2022, and protocols like Venus demonstrated improved recovery capabilities.

Methodology

Axis Intelligence Research compiled cryptocurrency statistics for this report using the following approach:

Primary sources used: CoinGecko Global Charts and Q1 2026 reports; CoinMarketCap historical and live data; Chainalysis 2026 Crypto Crime Report and 2025 Bybit incident analysis; Federal Reserve FEDS Notes (April 8, 2026); Bank for International Settlements Working Paper No. 1270; Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report (April 28, 2025 — Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance); TRM Labs Q1 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index; TRM Labs 2025 Crypto Adoption and Stablecoin Usage Report; Investing.com institutional flow analysis (April 2026); CoinLaw DeFi Market Statistics (June 18, 2026); World Economic Forum GENIUS Act analysis; Security.org 2026 U.S. crypto ownership survey.

Proprietary metric calculation: The Crypto Security Concentration Index™ was calculated by Axis Intelligence Research using Chainalysis annual stolen-funds data as the denominator and the largest single-incident loss as the numerator, for each year 2022–2025. Data points were cross-referenced across Chainalysis, The Block, and TRM Labs before inclusion.

Limitations: Cryptocurrency market data is inherently volatile and point-in-time. Market cap figures reflect the date specified and will differ at any other point. Adoption figures vary across methodologies — some trackers include inactive wallet holders; the figures cited here represent active ownership where specified. Hack figures from Chainalysis vs. TRM Labs vs. De.Fi vary based on definitional scope; discrepancies are noted inline. Energy consumption estimates from CCAF carry a range due to the fraction of global mining surveyed.

Update policy: This article is updated when a major quarterly report supersedes existing figures, when a significant market event materially changes headline statistics, or when traffic data indicate the page is underperforming.
