India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed 268.0 billion transactions in the 12 months to September 30, 2026. Visa processed 281.3 billion over the same twelve months. The gap is 4.7%, and UPI is growing about 13.6 percentage points a year faster than Visa. Axis Intelligence Research projects that 2027 is the first year UPI processes more payments than Visa’s entire global network — in all three of its scenarios.

Quick Answer

Axis Intelligence Research projects about 440 billion transactions on UPI and Brazil’s Pix combined in 2027 in its base case (range 424–455 billion), with UPI alone near 330 billion — above Visa’s fiscal 2026 count of 281.3 billion. The driver most likely to move it: how fast UPI’s growth keeps decelerating, currently about 0.73x per year.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research projects 439.8 billion UPI and Pix transactions in 2027 in its base case, up from an estimated 377.5 billion in 2026.
  2. UPI’s 268.0 billion transactions in the 12 months to September 2026 equal 95.3% of Visa’s 281.3 billion processed transactions in fiscal 2026, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation from NPCI and Visa data.
  3. UPI and Pix alone processed 308.1 billion transactions in 2025 — 85% of the global real-time total implied by ACI Worldwide’s April 2024 forecast path, Axis Intelligence Research finds.
  4. McKinsey and BCG both published “$2.6 trillion” for global payments revenue in September 2026 — McKinsey for 2025, BCG for 2030. The two forecasts sit $600 billion apart for 2030.
  5. The two largest stablecoins shrank 1.35% in Q2 2026; at their trailing 17.5% annual growth they reach about $384 billion by end-2028, a fifth of Standard Chartered’s $2 trillion forecast.

Will UPI Process More Payments Than Visa in 2027?

Yes, on every scenario Axis Intelligence Research ran. The comparison needs one honest footnote before the numbers: the two counts are not the same object. Visa’s “processed transactions” include card payments and cash-access transactions on Visa’s rails worldwide, reported on a fiscal year ending September 30. UPI’s count includes person-to-person transfers inside one country, on a calendar month basis. Neither is “better.” They are the two largest transaction counters in retail payments, and one of them is growing more than twice as fast.

Hold Visa at its fiscal 2026 growth rate of 9% and fiscal 2027 lands near 306.6 billion. The Axis base case puts UPI’s calendar 2027 at 330.5 billion — 7.8% ahead. Even the downside, where UPI growth slows to 13%, clears Visa by 4%.

So what does a crossover actually change? Not Visa’s revenue. Visa booked $45.9 billion of net revenue in fiscal 2026, up 15%. UPI earns close to nothing per transaction for the rail itself. The crossover matters because it ends an argument: the world’s largest retail payment network by count is now a zero-merchant-discount-rate public utility, and every central bank designing an instant rail will cite that fact in 2027.

How the Axis Base Case is built

Most real-time payment forecasts apply one compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to a global total. The Axis Base Case does something narrower and checkable: it models the two systems that carry most of the world’s instant payments, each from its own monthly data, and makes one assumption per system — how fast growth decelerates.

Transactions 2027 = Transactions 2026E × (1 + growth 2026E × decay ratio)

The decay ratio is this year’s growth divided by last year’s. It is observable, and it has been stable:

System2024 growth2025 growth2026E growthDecay ratio (latest)Source
UPI+46.4%+32.6%+23.6%0.73NPCI; Axis calculation
Pix+52.4%+25.7%+19.4%0.76Banco Central do Brasil; Axis calculation

The 2026 estimates are bridges, not guesses. UPI 2026E is 205.24 billion of actual January–September volume plus an Axis estimate for Q4: Q4 2025’s 62.80 billion grown at the average of August and September 2026 year-on-year growth (22.5%), giving 282.2 billion. Pix 2026E applies the first-half growth the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) published on October 27, 2026 — 19.4% — to both halves of 2025 (36.9 + 42.9 billion), giving 95.3 billion.

Base case: UPI 282.2 × (1 + 23.6% × 0.725) = 330.5 billion. Pix 95.3 × (1 + 19.4% × 0.756) = 109.3 billion. Total 439.8 billion, rounded to about 440 billion because the decay ratio cannot justify more precision than that.

Which assumption matters most?

UPI’s decay ratio, by a wide margin. Moving it 0.1 either way shifts the 2027 total by 6.7 billion transactions. The same move on Pix shifts it by 1.8 billion. Getting the UPI Q4 2026 bridge wrong by 3% moves the total by 4.8 billion. Translation for anyone watching: the NPCI release on the first of each month is the only data point that really moves this outlook.

A cross-check on plausibility. The government told the Lok Sabha that 554.9 million users had been onboarded on UPI as of June 2026, which works out to 40.9 transactions per onboarded user that month (an Axis Intelligence Research calculation). The base case needs an average month of 27.6 billion in 2027, 21.3% above June 2026’s 22.72 billion — achievable with user growth and frequency growth splitting the work, not with either alone.

Why Are Instant Payments Slowing Down — and Does It Matter?

They are slowing in growth rate, not in absolute adds. UPI added about 56 billion transactions in 2025 and is on course to add about 54 billion in 2026. That is what a maturing rail looks like: the percentage shrinks while the absolute increment holds.

Pix shows the ceiling more clearly. More than 150 million individuals used Pix in September 2026 alone, per the BCB’s Pix em números dashboard, in a month with more than 7.8 billion Pix transactions. When nearly every adult already uses a rail, growth must come from more transactions per user, not more users — and frequency growth is slower than adoption growth. Pix still took 55.2% of the 79.7 billion payment transactions Brazil recorded in the first half of 2026, per the BCB.

For anyone selling against these rails, the deceleration is the opening. For anyone whose margin depends on interchange in India or Brazil, it is no relief at all: a slower-growing free rail is still a free rail.

Are Real-Time Payment Forecasts Too Low? A Track-Record Check

The most cited global real-time forecast remains ACI Worldwide’s: 266.2 billion transactions in 2023, rising to 575.1 billion by 2028, a 16.7% CAGR, published April 30, 2024 [older data — no newer ACI global series found]. ACI did not publish annual values between those endpoints. Interpolating its stated CAGR path — an Axis Intelligence Research calculation, not an ACI figure — gives about 362 billion for 2025.

UPI (228.3 billion) and Pix (79.8 billion) alone reached 308.1 billion in 2025, or 85% of that implied global path. Every other instant system on Earth — Thailand’s PromptPay, the UK’s Faster Payments, Europe’s SEPA Instant, FedNow, Nigeria’s NIP — would have to fit in the remaining 15%.

The comparison has a scope caveat that cuts in ACI’s favor: ACI counts India at 129.3 billion for 2023, which likely includes rails beyond UPI. Still, the Axis base case puts UPI’s 2027 volume at 94.0% of ACI’s entire Asia-Pacific forecast for 2028. Read that as evidence the 2024 consensus underestimated India’s merchant QR adoption, not as a claim that ACI’s method is broken.

How Big Will the Payments Industry Be in 2030?

Somewhere between $2.6 trillion and $3.2 trillion of revenue, depending on whose definition you use — and that range is itself the finding.

FirmPublishedBase year value2030 forecastGrowthScope note

BCGSep 23, 2026not stated in release$2.6 trillion5% a yearBCG proprietary revenue model

Source: McKinsey, The 2026 Global Payments Report; BCG press release.

Back BCG’s 5% out of its 2030 figure and its 2025 starting point is about $2.04 trillion — an Axis Intelligence Research calculation. The $600 billion gap in 2030 is almost entirely scope: McKinsey counts the net interest earned on transaction balances, and interest was 46% of its 2025 pool. When a forecast’s biggest input is the level of interest rates, it is a rates forecast with a payments label on it. McKinsey says as much: a sustained 25-basis-point rate increase from 2026 would add about $100 billion by 2030.

Both firms agree on direction. McKinsey’s revenue growth fell to 3% in 2025; BCG’s forward rate of 5% is down from 7%. The fee pool is growing slower than the transaction count, which is exactly what the UPI crossover predicts.

Biggest Payment Trends for 2027

Each trend below is backed by data already moving. Trends without a dated, sourced indicator were cut.

1. Stablecoins: the law goes live, the supply has stalled

The claim: January 18, 2027 makes stablecoins a regulated US payment product, but issuance growth gives no sign of the tenfold forecasts.

The evidence: The GENIUS Act takes effect on the earlier of 18 months after its July 18, 2025 enactment or 120 days after final regulations. Any final rule issued after September 20, 2026 lands later than January 18, 2027 — so that date is now effectively locked, an Axis Intelligence Research reading of the statute. Meanwhile Tether’s USDT stood at $183.62 billion of tokens issued on June 30, 2026, and Circle’s USDC at $73.3 billion, both company-reported. Combined, the two leaders shrank 1.35% from March 31 to June 30, 2026, and grew 17.5% year-on-year. Tether’s own Q2 release concedes the industry’s total market cap fell in the quarter, and its transparency page showed $180.95 billion of USDT in net circulation on October 28, 2026 — 1.46% below the June figure. Circle puts USDC at 27% of US-dollar fiat-backed stablecoins, which implies a market of about $271.5 billion; the two leaders hold about 94.6% of it.

USDC moved $14.8 trillion onchain in Q2 2026 alone, up 151%, per Circle. Volume is racing; float is not. That is the velocity problem: a dollar token that turns over faster needs less supply to do the same work.

Sources: Citi GPS, Stablecoins 2030; TBAC presentation to Treasury, April 30, 2025; Standard Chartered and JPMorgan figures as reported by press — the underlying notes are not public; Tether and Circle disclosures. Required growth is an Axis Intelligence Research calculation on the two largest issuers, which hold about 94.6% of the market, so it overstates the market-wide requirement only slightly.

One line in this table is not what it is usually quoted as. The “Treasury’s $2 trillion” circulates as an official US government projection. In the TBAC deck it is footnoted to Standard Chartered, and the same deck dates it to 2028 on slides 2 and 8 and to 2030 on slide 14. There are not two independent $2 trillion forecasts; there is one, cited twice.

What would prove it wrong: USDT plus USDC above $300 billion at the Q4 2026 attestations, or bank-issued GENIUS-compliant coins reaching meaningful supply in H1 2027.

Who it affects: Cross-border payout providers, who gain a regulated settlement asset, and card issuers, whose interchange stablecoin rails bypass. Follow supply quarter by quarter in our stablecoin statistics and bank-issued tokens in our bank stablecoin tracker data.

2. Europe’s instant-payment mandate moves east

The claim: 2027 is the year the EU’s Instant Payments Regulation (IPR) reaches the countries that do not use the euro, and the non-bank providers.

The evidence: Under Regulation (EU) 2024/886, as summarized by the European Central Bank, banks in non-euro member states must receive euro instant transfers from January 9, 2027; euro-area payment and e-money institutions must offer instant transfers from April 9, 2027; and non-euro providers must send them and offer Verification of Payee (a name-and-IBAN match check before money leaves) from July 9, 2027. The IPR also forbids charging more for an instant transfer than a standard one — the pricing clause is what kills the “instant fee.” Separately, the Deutsche Bundesbank says the Eurosystem aims to issue a digital euro from 2029, assuming the legal basis is adopted by the end of 2026.

What would prove it wrong: Member states granting widespread exemptions, or the digital euro regulation missing its end-2026 adoption target.

Who it affects: Polish, Swedish, Czech and other non-euro banks pricing euro transfers, and every PSP whose fraud losses depend on misdirected credit transfers.

3. AI agents go after the interchange line

The claim: Agentic commerce — software agents that pick the merchant, amount or rail at runtime — is a margin threat before it is a volume story.

The evidence: McKinsey estimates agentic AI could put about $75 billion of global payments revenue at risk by 2030 in its baseline, and $160 billion in an aggressive scenario (September 25, 2026). In BCG’s survey of nearly 500 large merchants, 73% said they would switch acquirers for better support with agent-initiated transactions. The pressure point is routing: an agent instructed to minimize acceptance cost does not care about rewards points. Our agentic payments statistics track which markets have live agent-initiated card payments.

What would prove it wrong: Agent transactions settling overwhelmingly on card rails with standard interchange through 2027 — which is what McKinsey itself expects in card-heavy markets in the near term.

Who it affects: US issuers funding rewards out of interchange, and acquirers without agent authentication.

4. Cards are not losing — they are losing share of growth

The claim: Cards keep growing in absolute terms everywhere, including where free rails dominate.

The evidence: Visa’s processed transactions rose 9% in fiscal 2026, payments volume 9% and total cross-border volume 13%, per its October 27, 2026 filing. In Brazil, credit, debit and prepaid cards still carried 24.5 billion transactions in H1 2026, 30.8% of the total, and credit-card transaction count grew 9.2%, per the BCB. Where cards win is credit and cross-border — the two jobs a free domestic debit rail does not do.

Follow the fee, though, and the Brazilian data shows where the margin went. The average credit interchange rose to 1.7% in H1 2026, from 1.66% in 2025 and 1.64% in 2024, as premium cards grew from 60.4 million to 80.9 million active. Over the same two years the merchant discount rate on credit fell from 2.26% to 2.11%. Issuers are taking a larger slice of a thinner merchant fee — acquirers are the ones Pix is squeezing. Compare acceptance costs in our credit card processing fees benchmark and usage in credit card vs debit card statistics.

What would prove it wrong: Visa processed-transaction growth falling below 5% in fiscal 2027.

Who it affects: Anyone modeling interchange as a fixed share of consumer spend.

5. Recurring account-to-account payments start replacing card-on-file

The claim: The next instant-payment battleground is subscriptions and bills, not peer transfers.

The evidence: Pix Automático, the BCB’s recurring Pix, went from 4 million transactions in Q1 2026 to 9.5 million in Q2 2026. Peer-to-peer was already down to 40% of Pix transaction count in H1 2026. Small numbers, steep curve, and every one of them is a payment that used to need a card number on file or a boleto.

What would prove it wrong: Pix Automático below 20 million transactions in Q4 2026.

Who it affects: Subscription merchants paying card-not-present rates, and boleto-dependent billers.

6. FedNow scales — at American scale

The claim: The US instant rail is growing fast and remains tiny next to the global leaders.

The evidence: FedNow settled 6,376,467 payments in Q3 2026, up 154.4% year-on-year, with an average value of $58,161, per Federal Reserve Financial Services (updated October 20, 2026). FedNow’s entire January–September 2026 volume, 14.1 million payments, equals about 25 minutes of UPI traffic at September 2026’s daily average — an Axis Intelligence Research normalization. The high average ticket says FedNow is still a business rail, not a checkout rail. Our instant payments statistics track FedNow and The Clearing House RTP network quarter by quarter.

What would prove it wrong: FedNow average value falling below $20,000 in 2027, which would signal consumer use.

Who it affects: US banks deciding whether to send, not just receive.

Methodology

Base Case inputs. UPI monthly volumes come from the NPCI UPI product statistics tables for fiscal years 2023-24 to 2026-27, covering April 2023 to September 2026; calendar-year totals for 2024 and 2025 are Axis sums of those monthly figures. The 2023 total (117.6 billion) predates the tables retrieved and is NPCI’s figure as reported at the time. Pix figures come from the Banco Central do Brasil’s Pix statistics, its Relatório de Gestão do Pix 2023–2025 and its October 27, 2026 note on H1 2026 retail payment statistics. Visa figures come from its Form 8-K of October 27, 2026. All retrieved October 29, 2026.

Why only UPI and Pix. They are the two largest instant systems with monthly or semi-annual public counts from their operators. Adding systems without comparable data would add noise, not coverage. The headline metric is therefore “UPI + Pix,” not “global real-time payments,” and it is never compared to global forecasts without saying so.

Decay ratio. Ratio of a year’s growth rate to the prior year’s. UPI’s was 0.70 in 2025 and 0.73 on the 2026 estimate; Pix’s was 0.49 then 0.76. The base case uses each system’s latest ratio. The Pix series is noisier, which is why its scenario band is set wider in relative terms.

What was excluded. Market-research “digital payments market size” figures that do not disclose scope or base year were excluded from all tables. Standard Chartered and JPMorgan stablecoin forecasts are shown because they are widely cited and their headline values are consistent across independent press reports, but their underlying notes are not public; they are labeled accordingly. The TBAC figure was read from the Treasury-hosted presentation itself.

Limitations. Visa and UPI counts measure different things (see first section). The Q4 2026 UPI bridge assumes festive-season growth matches August–September. The stablecoin trend check covers only the two largest issuers. ACI’s interpolated path is our arithmetic on its published endpoints.

Grade-back commitment. We will compare these projections with NPCI’s full-year 2027 data, the BCB’s 2027 Pix statistics and Visa’s fiscal 2027 filing in our November 2027 edition, and publish the comparison first, right or wrong.

Payment Trends 2027: Questions People Ask

What is the biggest payment trend for 2027?

Volume shifting to free public rails. Axis Intelligence Research projects UPI and Pix will process about 440 billion transactions in 2027, and UPI alone will likely pass Visa’s global transaction count for the first time.

Will UPI overtake Visa?

On transaction count, very likely in 2027. UPI processed 268.0 billion transactions in the 12 months to September 2026, 95.3% of Visa’s 281.3 billion. On revenue, no: UPI charges merchants close to nothing, while Visa earned $45.9 billion in fiscal 2026.

When does the GENIUS Act take effect?

January 18, 2027. The law takes effect 18 months after its July 18, 2025 signing or 120 days after final rules, whichever comes first — and rules were not final early enough to bring the date forward.

Will stablecoins reach $2 trillion?

Not on current growth. The two largest stablecoins totaled $256.9 billion on June 30, 2026 and grew 17.5% in a year. Hitting Standard Chartered’s $2 trillion by end-2028 would take about 127% growth a year; JPMorgan’s $500 billion needs about 30%. The often-quoted “Treasury” $2 trillion figure is the same Standard Chartered number, footnoted in a TBAC presentation of April 30, 2025.

Are instant payments mandatory in Europe?

For euro-area banks, yes since 2025. In 2027 the obligation extends: non-euro banks must receive euro instant transfers from January 9, euro-area payment and e-money institutions must offer them from April 9, and non-euro providers must send them from July 9.

Is FedNow growing?

Fast in percentage, small in absolute terms. FedNow settled 6.38 million payments in Q3 2026, up 154.4% from a year earlier, at an average of $58,161 per payment — about 25 minutes of UPI traffic for all of January through September 2026.

How much revenue does the payments industry make?

McKinsey estimates $2.6 trillion in 2025, growing about 4% a year to $3.2 trillion by 2030. BCG forecasts $2.6 trillion for 2030 on a narrower definition; the difference is mostly whether interest on balances counts.

What is agentic commerce in payments?

Purchases where an AI agent, not a person, chooses the merchant, amount or payment rail at the moment of buying. McKinsey estimates it could put about $75 billion of payments revenue at risk by 2030, mostly deposit interest and card interchange.
