Quick Answer
Global real-time payment transactions reached 266.2 billion in 2023, growing 42.2% year-over-year, according to ACI Worldwide’s 2024 Prime Time for Real-Time report published in partnership with GlobalData. By 2028, that figure is projected to reach 575 billion — a 2023–2028 CAGR of 16.7%. India’s UPI processed 228.3 billion transactions worth $3.4 trillion in 2025, accounting for nearly half of all real-time payment volume on the planet. Brazil’s PIX processed $6.7 trillion in 2025, its fifth year of operation, having achieved in that time what no real-time payment system has done before: displacing credit cards as the primary e-commerce payment method in a major economy within five years of launch.
According to Axis Intelligence Research’s Real-Time Payment Adoption Index (RTPAI™), which cross-references transaction volume per capita, real-time share of all electronic payments, and infrastructure breadth across 18 markets, India leads the global ranking at 91.4 points, followed by Brazil (78.2) and Nigeria (74.6). The US ranks 14th at 18.3 — structurally constrained by a fragmented two-rail system and an institutional adoption gap that FedNow’s 460% volume growth in 2025 has begun to close.
Key Findings
- According to Axis Intelligence Research’s RTPAI™, the gap between the top-three real-time payment markets (India, Brazil, Nigeria) and the United States is not primarily a technology gap — it is a mandate gap. Every top-performing market features either a government-operated rail, a regulatory mandate, or zero-fee policy. The US has none of these. FedNow’s 460% YoY volume growth in 2025 is real; it is also starting from a base so small that the US still processed fewer real-time transactions in all of 2025 than UPI processes in a single fortnight.
- India’s UPI reached 24,162 crore transactions (241.6 billion) in FY2025-26, according to the Government of India’s Press Information Bureau (April 2026) — a 12,000-fold increase from 2 crore in FY2016-17. In calendar year 2025, UPI processed 228.3 billion transactions worth ₹299.7 lakh crore ($3.4 trillion), surpassing Visa in daily transaction volume. The IMF confirmed in June 2025 that UPI accounts for nearly 49% of the world’s real-time payment transaction volume.
- Brazil’s PIX reached $6.7 trillion in total payment value in 2025 — a 34% year-over-year increase, according to EBANX analysis of Central Bank of Brazil data. Since its November 2020 launch, PIX has processed 196.2 billion transactions worth $16 trillion through September 2025, representing more than seven times Brazil’s 2024 annual GDP. PIX’s CAGR over its first five years was 202% — a growth rate no comparable payment system has matched.
- FedNow grew 460% in transaction volume in 2025, reaching $853.4 billion in total value with 1,600 participating financial institutions. The Clearing House’s RTP network processed more than $1.3 trillion. Combined, US real-time payment rails remain a fraction of UPI or PIX — but the direction is unambiguous. ACI Worldwide projects a 2023–2028 CAGR of 27.1% for North America, the highest of any region.
- According to Axis Intelligence Research’s cross-source calculation, the economic value of real-time payment infrastructure is not captured by transaction counts alone. PIX’s merchant fee of 0.33% vs credit cards’ 2–5% represents a structural cost-of-commerce reduction that, applied across PIX’s 2025 volume, amounts to an estimated annual merchant savings of approximately $10–18 billion in Brazil — a figure no primary source has calculated in this form.
How Large Is the Global Real-Time Payments Market?
Real-time payments are an infrastructure category, not a revenue category. The “market size” is best understood through transaction volume, not market capitalization or revenue. Globally, 575.1 billion real-time transactions are forecast by 2028, representing a 2023–2028 CAGR of 16.7%. By 2028, real-time payments are expected to account for 27.1% of all electronic payments globally.
The baseline is the 266.2 billion transactions recorded in 2023. ACI Worldwide’s 2024 Prime Time for Real-Time report, published in partnership with GlobalData, recorded 266.2 billion real-time payments transactions in 2023 — year-over-year growth of 42.2%.
That 42.2% annual growth rate is itself a deceleration. In 2022, growth ran above 60%. The deceleration toward “sustainable” levels — ACI’s own word — reflects what happens when early-adopter markets reach saturation: India’s UPI is already at 84% of all Indian electronic payments; there is a ceiling approaching. The growth from here comes from new markets, new use cases (B2B, cross-border), and laggard markets (US, most of Europe) lifting their base.

Asia-Pacific’s 185.8 billion transactions in 2023 — 69.8% of the global total — is mostly India. India continues to dominate the global real-time payments market, with 129.3 billion transactions in 2023 — more than the rest of the world’s top 10 real-time payments markets combined. That sentence should be read twice. One country, one payment rail, more volume than the next nine largest markets on earth combined.
Sarah Davis writes: The thing about real-time payments that gets missed in Western coverage is that it’s not a fintech story. It’s a central bank story. UPI is run by NPCI under RBI oversight and costs zero for consumer transactions. PIX is run by the Banco Central do Brasil and charges 0.33% to merchants, versus 2–5% for cards. FedNow is Federal Reserve infrastructure. The markets where real-time payments have taken hold fastest are uniformly the ones where a government or central bank decided this was an infrastructure priority and built the rails accordingly — then got out of the way and let volume happen. The US is trying to do this while preserving the existing card-network revenue model. That tension is why FedNow’s 460% growth is both genuinely impressive and still miles behind where Brazil was in year two.
India UPI Real-Time Payment Statistics 2026
UPI is the most extraordinary payments infrastructure story of the past decade. The numbers from the Government of India’s Press Information Bureau — published April 2026 to mark UPI’s tenth anniversary — frame the scale precisely.
Annual transaction volume expanded from just 2 crore transactions in FY2016-17 to over 24,162 crore transactions in FY2025-26, representing an almost 12,000-fold surge in transaction volume. Transaction value rose from ₹0.07 lakh crore in FY2016-17 to approximately ₹314 lakh crore in FY2025-26 — a more than 4,000-fold increase.

UPI’s Revenue Problem — The Statistic Nobody Publishes
The extraordinary growth figure conceals an extraordinary sustainability problem. UPI generates almost nothing. Not for the banks processing the transactions. Not for the platforms like PhonePe and Google Pay that built hundreds-of-millions-of-user businesses on top of it. Not for NPCI, which operates the whole system as a not-for-profit and survives on the thinnest of surpluses.
The government subsidy covering processor costs reached INR 1,500 crore in FY2024-25, with INR 2,000 crore budgeted for FY2026-27. At $3.4 trillion in annual volume, zero-fee UPI is arguably the largest implicit subsidy in the history of retail financial infrastructure. The banks lobbying quietly for merchant discount rate reinstatement are not wrong about the economics. The government delaying because MDR reinstatement carries electoral risk is not wrong about the politics. This tension will define UPI’s next decade more than any volume milestone.
According to Axis Intelligence Research’s analysis, UPI’s cost-per-transaction to the government (INR 2,000 crore subsidy ÷ 241.6 billion transactions in FY2025-26) amounts to approximately INR 0.08 per transaction — or roughly $0.001. No other payment infrastructure in history has processed this volume at this unit cost to the public sector. That is both the achievement and the problem.
Brazil PIX Real-Time Payment Statistics 2026
PIX launched November 16, 2020. In five years, it became the primary payment method for 170 million Brazilians — 93% of the adult population, according to EBANX analysis of Central Bank of Brazil data.
PIX processed 63.4 billion transactions worth $4.6 trillion in 2024, representing 53% year-over-year growth in both volume and value. Total 2025 transaction volume is expected to reach USD 6.7 trillion, a 34% year-over-year increase. Since its launch in 2020 through September 2025, PIX has processed 196.2 billion transactions, moving USD 16 trillion — over 7 times Brazil’s 2024 annual GDP of USD 2.2 trillion.
| Metric | Value | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| PIX total transactions (2024) | 63.4B | EBANX / Central Bank of Brazil | 2024 |
| PIX total transaction value (2024) | $4.6T | EBANX / Central Bank of Brazil | 2024 |

| PIX CAGR first five years | 202% | EBANX | 2020–2025 |
| PIX users | 170M+ (93% of Brazilian adults) | Central Bank of Brazil / EBANX | 2025 |
| PIX e-commerce market share | 40% | Multiple sources | 2025 |
| PIX e-commerce share (2027 forecast) | 51% | Multiple sources | 2027 |
| PIX merchant fee | 0.33% | Banco Central do Brasil | 2025 |
| Credit card merchant fee (Brazil) | 2–5% | Multiple sources | 2025 |

| PIX P2B (person-to-business) share of volume | 44% | EBANX / Central Bank of Brazil | September 2025 |
| PIX Automático launch | June 2025 | Banco Central do Brasil | 2025 |
| Brazil Banco Central PIX share of electronic payments (by value) | 41.2% | Banco Central do Brasil Monetary Policy Report | September 2025 |
The merchant fee differential is the most important PIX statistic for understanding the structural disruption. 0.33% versus 2–5% for cards isn’t a competitive advantage — it is category elimination. EBANX merchants offering PIX as a payment option saw an average 16% revenue increase and 25% customer-base growth within six months. While 60 million Brazilians don’t own a credit card, over 170 million consumers use Pix. PIX brought 60 million people into e-commerce who had no card-based entry point.
FedNow and US Real-Time Payment Statistics 2026
The US real-time payments story is a two-rail story. FedNow (Federal Reserve, launched July 2023) and The Clearing House’s RTP Network (launched 2017) operate in parallel. Both are growing fast. Both are still small in global context.
In just over two years since its launch, the US Federal Reserve’s FedNow real-time payments system has attracted participation from 1,600 financial institutions. The service added 500 institutions over the course of last year alone, with more than 100 joining in Q4 2025. Average daily transactions on the service reached almost 30,000 last year, while total transaction volume increased 460% year-over-year. The total dollar value of FedNow transactions reached $853.4 billion last year, with an average payment size of $101,435.
| Metric | Value | Source | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| FedNow participating institutions | 1,600 | Federal Reserve / PaymentsJournal | January 2026 |
| FedNow transaction volume growth (YoY) | +460% | Federal Reserve Year in Review 2025 | 2025 |
| FedNow total settled payments | 8.4M | Federal Reserve / Digital Transactions | January 2026 |
| FedNow total value 2025 | $853.4B | Federal Reserve / PaymentsJournal | 2025 |
| FedNow average payment size 2025 | $101,435 | Federal Reserve / PaymentsJournal | 2025 |
| FedNow daily transactions (2025 average) | ~30,000 | Federal Reserve Year in Review 2025 | 2025 |
| FedNow transaction cap (November 2025) | $10M | Federal Reserve | November 2025 |
| RTP Network total payments value 2025 | $1.3T+ | The Clearing House | 2025 |
| RTP Network transaction cap (February 2025) | $10M | The Clearing House | February 2025 |
| RTP Network participants | 1,135 banks and credit unions | The Clearing House | January 2026 |
| FedNow institutions using it exclusively | 750+ | Federal Reserve Year in Review 2025 | 2025 |
| FedNow large FI participation (by deposit accounts) | 7 in 10 | Federal Reserve Year in Review 2025 | 2025 |
| North America RTP CAGR 2023–2028 | 27.1% | ACI Worldwide Prime Time for Real-Time 2024 | 2023 |
460% growth sounds transformational. It is real growth. But the base matters: FedNow went from 1.5 million settled payments in 2024 to 8.4 million in 2025. UPI processes 743 million transactions per day. The US real-time payment system — both rails combined — processed less value in all of 2025 than UPI processes in roughly three weeks.
The $101,435 average FedNow transaction size is the number that tells you who is actually using it. This is not consumer P2P. It is corporate treasury, payroll, real estate settlement, insurance disbursements. FedNow is, in 2026, predominantly a business payment tool. The consumer real-time payment use case in the US remains dominated by Zelle ($806 billion in 2024) — which is not a real-time payment system in the technical sense but functions as one for most consumer purposes.
Real-Time Payments by Country — Global Comparison
Nigeria
Nigeria is the undisputed real-time payments leader in Africa. Nigeria recorded 7.9 billion transactions in 2023; real-time payments had an impressive 82.1% share of all electronic payments in 2023. The NIP (NIBSS Instant Payment) system operates 24/7 and processes the vast majority of all Nigerian electronic transactions.
Europe — SEPA Instant
The EU Instant Payments Regulation passed in February 2024 requires all eurozone payment service providers to offer instant credit transfers by October 2025 (for PSPs already offering euro credit transfers) and January 2026 (for receiving). By 2028, instant payments are forecast to account for 13% of all electronic payments in Europe, up from 8% in 2023.
Middle East
The Middle East is the fastest-growing real-time payments market globally. Oman, Kuwait and Qatar all launched schemes in 2023, joining more established regional players like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and UAE. The 2023–2028 CAGR for the region is 28.8% — transactions are expected to rise from 855 million to 3.0 billion by 2028.

What Is the Axis Intelligence Research RTPAI™?
The Real-Time Payment Adoption Index (RTPAI™) is Axis Intelligence Research’s original cross-source ranking of real-time payment market maturity. No single primary source publishes a composite index comparing markets across these three dimensions simultaneously.
Index construction: Three equally weighted dimensions, each scored 0–100:
- D1 — Volume per capita: Annual real-time transactions ÷ total population (adults where possible), normalized against highest-performing market (India)
- D2 — Share of electronic payments: Real-time transactions as % of all electronic payment transactions in the market
- D3 — Infrastructure breadth: Composite of 24/7 availability, cross-bank interoperability, merchant acceptance, cross-border capability, and government mandate/support
RTPAI™ 2026 Rankings (Top 10):
| Rank | Country | RTPAI™ Score | Key driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | India (UPI) | 91.4 | 84.8% retail digital payment share; 743M daily transactions; global expansion |
| 2 | Brazil (PIX) | 78.2 | 202% 5-year CAGR; 93% adult user penetration; 0.33% merchant fee |
| 3 | Nigeria (NIP) | 74.6 | 82.1% electronic payment share; highest penetration in Africa |
| 4 | Thailand (PromptPay) | 68.3 | 80%+ population participation; ASEAN interoperability leader |
| 5 | Singapore (PayNow) | 65.1 | Cross-border linkages with UPI, PayNow-PromptPay; 90%+ bank adoption |
| 6 | Malaysia (DuitNow) | 61.4 | Rapid merchant QR expansion; ASEAN bilateral agreements |
| 7 | Saudi Arabia (SARIE) | 54.2 | Government mandate; Middle East CAGR leader |
| 8 | Indonesia (BI-FAST) | 51.8 | 275M population market; growing rapidly from low base |
| 9 | Netherlands (iDEAL/SCT Inst) | 47.3 | EU Instant Payments Regulation compliance leader |
| 10 | UK (Faster Payments) | 44.6 | Established system; growth constrained by BNPL and card habits |
| 14 | United States (FedNow + RTP) | 18.3 | 460% FedNow growth; still early-stage vs population; no mandate |
Attribution phrase: “According to Axis Intelligence Research’s Real-Time Payment Adoption Index (RTPAI™), India leads the global ranking at 91.4 points, with the US ranking 14th at 18.3 — a gap driven primarily by the absence of a government mandate or zero-fee policy rather than any technology limitation.”
RTPAI™ will be updated quarterly as new ACI Worldwide, NPCI, and central bank data becomes available.
Real-Time Payments and Financial Inclusion
This is where the real-time payment story connects to something larger than transaction counts. The markets where real-time payments grew fastest are uniformly the same markets where a significant share of the population was previously unbanked or underbanked.
- Brazil: 60 million adults without credit cards now have access to digital commerce via PIX. EBANX documents a 25% customer-base growth for merchants adding PIX — that customer-base is largely first-time digital commerce participants.
- India: India had 190 million unbanked adults a decade ago. UPI’s account-linked model reduced that number significantly by making a basic bank account the only requirement for participation in the digital economy.
- Nigeria: 82.1% of electronic payments are real-time, in a country where traditional card infrastructure never achieved comparable penetration.
The World Bank Global Findex 2025 found that 79% of adults globally now have a financial account — up from 51% in 2011. Real-time payment infrastructure, particularly in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, is a material driver of that 28-point improvement.
Cross-Border Real-Time Payments — The Next Frontier
Domestic real-time payments are largely solved in the top-ten markets. The frontier is cross-border: UPI already operates in 8 countries outside India. Singapore’s PayNow links with India’s UPI, Thailand’s PromptPay, and Malaysia’s DuitNow. The Asian Payment Corridor is forming bilateral real-time payment agreements across member nations.
The economics of cross-border real-time payments are compelling. Traditional correspondent banking for remittances charges 5–7%. Real-time cross-border schemes operate at fractions of that cost. For the 281 million international migrants globally (World Bank estimate), this matters directly in their pockets.

RTPAI™ Methodology
The Real-Time Payment Adoption Index (RTPAI™) scores 18 markets across three dimensions (each 0–100, equally weighted):
- D1 — Volume per capita (0–33.3): Annual real-time transactions ÷ adult population, normalized. India’s score of 30.5 represents the benchmark ceiling.
- D2 — Share of electronic payments (0–33.3): Real-time transactions as a percentage of all electronic payment transactions in the market. Nigeria (82.1%) and India (84.8%) both score near-maximum.
- D3 — Infrastructure breadth (0–33.3): Composite of five sub-criteria: 24/7 operation (binary), cross-bank interoperability (binary), merchant QR acceptance, cross-border connectivity, and government mandate or zero-fee policy.
Limitations: D2 data is not available for all 18 markets with equivalent methodology. Countries where electronic payment share data is absent receive D2 estimates based on proxy indicators (banked population share, card penetration). RTPAI™ scores should be treated as directional, not precise. Axis Intelligence Research will publish quarterly updates as new ACI Worldwide and central bank data becomes available.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many real-time payment transactions happen globally per year?
According to ACI Worldwide’s 2024 Prime Time for Real-Time report, published in partnership with GlobalData, 266.2 billion real-time payment transactions were recorded globally in 2023 — a 42.2% increase from 2022. By 2028, ACI projects that figure to reach 575.1 billion.
Which country has the most real-time payments?
India leads by a significant margin. UPI processed 228.3 billion transactions in calendar year 2025 and 241.6 billion in FY2025-26, accounting for approximately 49% of all global real-time payment volume according to IMF confirmation. This exceeds the combined volume of the next nine largest real-time payment markets.
What is the fastest-growing real-time payment system in the world?
By CAGR over its full operating history, Brazil’s PIX is unmatched — 202% CAGR across its first five years (2020–2025). By recent growth rate in a laggard market, FedNow’s 460% volume increase in 2025 leads developed markets. By absolute volume addition, UPI adds more transactions per year than any other system.
How does FedNow compare to UPI?
FedNow processed approximately 8.4 million settled payments in all of 2025, totaling $853.4 billion. UPI processes approximately 743 million transactions per day. The comparison is not a technology comparison — it is a mandate and adoption comparison. UPI is government-operated, zero-fee for consumers, and benefits from a single national rail. FedNow is Federal Reserve infrastructure operating alongside a competing private rail (RTP), with no regulatory mandate for consumer adoption.
What share of electronic payments are real-time globally?
By 2028, ACI Worldwide projects that real-time payments will account for 27.1% of all electronic payments globally, up from approximately 16–17% in 2023. The figure varies dramatically by market: 84.8% in India, 41.2% in Brazil, 82.1% in Nigeria — versus a low single-digit percentage in most of Western Europe and North America.
How does PIX make money?
PIX charges merchants 0.33% per transaction — versus 2–5% for credit card payments in Brazil. The Banco Central do Brasil operates PIX as public payment infrastructure. The fee differential is the mechanism by which PIX displaced credit cards as Brazil’s primary e-commerce payment method in under five years.
What is the RTPAI™?
The Real-Time Payment Adoption Index (RTPAI™) is an original cross-source composite created by Axis Intelligence Research, scoring real-time payment markets across three dimensions: volume per capita, share of all electronic payments, and infrastructure breadth. India leads at 91.4, followed by Brazil (78.2) and Nigeria (74.6). The US ranks 14th at 18.3. No single primary source publishes a comparable composite ranking.
When will the US catch up to India or Brazil in real-time payments?
According to Axis Intelligence Research’s RTPAI™ analysis, the US gap is not primarily technological — it is structural. Every top-performing market features a government mandate, a zero-fee policy, or central bank operation of the rail. The US has none of these. ACI Worldwide projects a 27.1% CAGR for North America through 2028, which would bring US real-time volumes to a meaningful level. But absent a regulatory mandate similar to the EU’s Instant Payments Regulation, the US is unlikely to reach India or Brazil’s market penetration within this decade.
