Sony Group reported continuing-operations sales of ¥12,479.6 billion (about $82.8 billion) and operating income of ¥1,447.5 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Axis Intelligence Research calculates that games, music and film generated 66.3% of that segment profit — the CEPS reading Sony’s own disclosures never print.

Quick Answer

Sony’s FY2025 sales reached ¥12,479.6 billion, up 4%, and operating income ¥1,447.5 billion, up 13% (Sony FY2025 results, Form 6-K, May 8, 2026). In July 2026 Sony raised its FY2026 operating income forecast to ¥1,720 billion. According to Axis Intelligence Research, creative entertainment’s share of segment profit (CEPS) is heading to 68.3%.

Key Findings

  1. Axis Intelligence Research’s Creative Entertainment Profit Share (CEPS) stood at 66.3% in FY2025: G&NS, Music and Pictures earned ¥1,015.2 billion of the ¥1,531.1 billion produced by Sony’s five reportable segments.
  2. Stripping out Sony’s disclosed currency effect, Axis Intelligence Research finds Game & Network Services sales fell 8.7% in Q1 FY2026, although reported sales were flat at ¥937.1 billion.
  3. China became a larger market for Sony than Japan in FY2025: ¥1,428.7 billion versus ¥1,333.2 billion, per Sony’s Form 20-F — China sales are up 42.7% in two years, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation.
  4. Sony Music’s FY2025 operating income of ¥447.0 billion equalled 96.5% of PlayStation’s, on 45.2% of its sales, according to Axis Intelligence Research’s segment comparison.
  5. Sony raised its FY2026 operating income forecast from ¥1,600 billion to ¥1,720 billion on July 31, 2026, driven by the G&NS segment, per Sony’s Q1 FY2026 presentation.

How Much Revenue Does Sony Make in 2026?

Sony Group’s continuing-operations sales were ¥12,479.6 billion in FY2025 (April 2025–March 2026), against ¥12,034.9 billion in FY2024. At Sony’s own FY2025 average rate of ¥150.7 per dollar, Axis Intelligence Research converts that to about $82.8 billion. On a constant-currency basis, Sony says sales grew approximately 3%.

The current fiscal year is running ahead. Q1 FY2026 (April–June 2026) sales rose 8% to ¥2,837.8 billion — but Sony itself notes that on a constant-currency basis they fell about 1%. The quarter’s average dollar rate was ¥159.3, against ¥144.6 a year earlier. Sony’s July forecast puts full-year FY2026 sales at ¥12,500 billion.

Sony’s yen headline, translated

Sony reports in yen and most English-language coverage converts at whatever rate the writer happens to use. Axis Intelligence Research converts only at Sony’s disclosed period averages, so the dollar figures on this page reconcile to the filings: FY2025 operating income of ¥1,447.5 billion equals about $9.61 billion at ¥150.7.

Mia Scarlett’s read. A 4% top line with a 13% profit line is a mix story, not a volume story. The yen did the heavy lifting in the quarter everyone quotes; the constant-currency figure — down about 1% in Q1 — is the one a credit analyst would underline.

Sony Revenue by Segment: Which Business Makes the Most Money?

Game & Network Services (PlayStation) remains Sony’s largest segment by both sales and profit. But the gap in profit is far narrower than the gap in sales.

Why Music nearly matches PlayStation on profit

Sony Music earned ¥447.0 billion of operating income in FY2025 against ¥463.3 billion at G&NS. Axis Intelligence Research’s calculation: Music’s profit equalled 96.5% of PlayStation’s while its sales were 45.2% of PlayStation’s. Sony reports FY2025 streaming revenue growth in dollar terms of +9% for Recorded Music and +14% for Music Publishing.

Two caveats matter. Music’s FY2025 figure includes a ¥34.7 billion remeasurement gain on Peanuts Holdings, and G&NS absorbed ¥120.1 billion of impairment on Bungie’s assets. Sony says G&NS operating income rose 45% excluding one-time items. So the near-tie partly reflects PlayStation’s write-down — but a catalog business earning 21.1% margins at that scale is the quieter story in the filing.

For PS5 units, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Network engagement, see our dedicated PlayStation statistics report, which owns those figures.

What Is Sony’s Growth Without the Weak Yen?

Sony discloses a currency effect for each segment alongside its results. Subtracting it from the reported change gives an underlying growth rate that Sony does not print as a percentage. Axis Intelligence Research computed it for every segment.

Formula: Ex-FX sales change = (current sales − prior sales − Sony-disclosed FX impact) ÷ prior sales.

Worked example for PlayStation: (937.1 − 936.5 − 81.7) ÷ 936.5 = −8.7%. Sony attributes the decline to lower sales of non-first-party software and fewer hardware units.

On operating income, where Sony also discloses the FX effect, the same method gives +23.6% ex-FX for G&NS ((202.0 − 148.0 − 19.1) ÷ 148.0), +82.3% for I&SS and −23.2% for ET&S. G&NS profit was helped by U.S. tariff refunds, which Sony lists as a positive factor.

Mia Scarlett’s read. “Record first-quarter profit” is accurate. So is this: once the yen is taken out, PlayStation’s top line shrank by close to a tenth in the quarter while its profit rose. That is a segment harvesting its installed base — software mix and cost, not unit growth — at the same time as Sony says it is raising spend on the next platform.

The CEPS Index: How Much of Sony’s Profit Comes From Entertainment?

CEPS — Creative Entertainment Profit Share is an Axis Intelligence Research metric that answers one question: what share of the operating profit earned by Sony’s reportable segments comes from its creative entertainment businesses (G&NS, Music, Pictures) rather than its electronics and semiconductor businesses (ET&S, I&SS)?

Formula: CEPS = (G&NS OI + Music OI + Pictures OI) ÷ (OI of all five reportable segments) × 100. All Other and Corporate are excluded so that one-off holding-company items do not move the reading.

FY2025 worked example: (463.3 + 447.0 + 104.9) ÷ (463.3 + 447.0 + 104.9 + 158.6 + 357.3) = 1,015.2 ÷ 1,531.1 = 66.3%.

What CEPS says about Sony

Two-thirds of Sony’s segment profit now comes from games, music and film. The reading held at 66.3% across FY2024 and FY2025 even as creative entertainment profit rose by ¥125.8 billion — because image sensors grew their profit by ¥96.2 billion over the same year. Sony’s July forecast implies a move to 68.3% in FY2026.

The quarterly reading is the one to watch. CEPS fell from 72.7% in Q1 FY2025 to 66.9% in Q1 FY2026 as I&SS more than doubled its operating income. Sensor profit cycles with smartphone launches; creative entertainment is steadier. A CEPS drop driven by sensors is a different signal from one driven by a weak PlayStation quarter, and the table lets readers tell which is which.

CEPS measures profit mix, not valuation or quality of earnings, and it inherits whatever one-time items sit inside segment operating income (such as the Bungie impairment in FY2025).

Mia Scarlett’s read. The portfolio Sony is building shows up plainly here. The home-entertainment business is heading into a 51/49 joint venture controlled by TCL, and the financial arm has been spun off. Every step removes low-margin hardware revenue from the denominator. If the BRAVIA venture closes as planned in April 2027, ET&S shrinks, and CEPS should rise without PlayStation or Music having to do anything.

Where Does Sony Make Its Money? Sales by Region

Sony’s Form 20-F breaks out sales to external customers by geography. The United States remains the largest market at 32.6% of sales, with Europe at 22.7% and Japan at 10.6% (Sony-reported shares).

China overtook Japan

In FY2025 Sony sold more to customers in China (¥1,428.7 billion) than in its home market Japan (¥1,333.2 billion) — the first year that happens in the three years the 20-F discloses. China sales rose 42.7% between FY2023 and FY2025, the fastest growth of any region in the table. The 20-F does not break regions down by segment, and Sony’s Q1 FY2026 commentary notes the imaging market in China kept contracting year on year, so the growth sits elsewhere in the portfolio.

U.S. sales, the largest block, declined 1.5% in FY2025 — a period that includes the U.S. tariff changes Sony lists among its risk factors.

Sony’s FY2026 Forecast: What Changed in July?

On July 31, 2026, Sony raised its FY2026 forecast. Operating income went from ¥1,600 billion to ¥1,720 billion; net income attributable from ¥1,160 billion to ¥1,210 billion; sales from ¥12,300 billion to ¥12,500 billion.

The FY2026 forecast implies a G&NS operating margin of 14.5% (660 ÷ 4,540), up from 9.9% in FY2025, an Axis Intelligence Research calculation. Sony attributes the G&NS upgrade to U.S. tariff refunds, currency and cost improvements, partly offset by adjustments to its FY2026 first-party title roadmap. Sony also states it has secured enough memory to meet its projected FY2026 PS5 sales volume.

The Kumamoto earthquake of July 28, 2026, which halted production at Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing’s Kumamoto Technology Center, is not included in the forecast because Sony could not yet estimate its impact.

Is Sony on track for its mid-range plan?

Sony’s 5th Mid-Range Plan (FY2024–FY2026) targets operating income growth of 10% or more a year and a three-year cumulative operating margin of 10% or more. As of May 2026, Sony forecast 16% and 11.7% respectively.

Mia Scarlett’s read. Note what the July revision was made of: tariff refunds, currency, cost. None of those is demand. Guidance raised on non-operating tailwinds is still guidance raised, but the quarter to judge it is the holiday quarter, when PlayStation software and hardware carry the year.

How Strong Is Sony’s Balance Sheet?

Sony ended FY2025 with a net cash position of ¥539.2 billion and generated ¥1,966.3 billion of operating cash flow from continuing operations. Capital expenditure was ¥804.9 billion. The planned FY2026 dividend is ¥35 per share, up ¥10. Sources: Sony Form 6-K (May 8, 2026), Sony Form 20-F, Sony Form 6-K (July 31, 2026).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PlayStation still Sony’s most profitable business?

Yes, narrowly. In FY2025 G&NS earned ¥463.3 billion of operating income and Music ¥447.0 billion. Excluding PlayStation’s ¥120.1 billion Bungie impairment, the gap would be wide; for FY2026 Sony forecasts ¥660 billion for G&NS versus ¥420 billion for Music.

Why did Sony post a net loss if its operating profit hit a record?

Sony’s continuing operations earned ¥1,030.9 billion in FY2025. The ¥326.9 billion consolidated loss comes from the discontinued financial services business spun off on October 1, 2025. For analysis of the operating company, use continuing-operations figures.

How much of Sony’s profit depends on the weak yen?

In Q1 FY2026 Sony estimated currency added ¥81.7 billion to G&NS sales and ¥19.1 billion to its operating income. Axis Intelligence Research calculates G&NS sales fell 8.7% ex-FX; Sony says group sales fell about 1% at constant currency.

What is the CEPS index?

CEPS (Creative Entertainment Profit Share) is Axis Intelligence Research’s measure of the share of Sony’s five-segment operating income earned by G&NS, Music and Pictures. It read 66.3% in FY2025 and 68.3% on Sony’s July 2026 FY2026 forecast.

Is Sony selling its TV business?

Sony is moving its home-entertainment business, including BRAVIA TVs, into BRAVIA Inc., a joint venture 51% owned by TCL and 49% by Sony, expected to start operating in April 2027 subject to approvals. Products are expected to keep the Sony and BRAVIA names.

Which country buys the most from Sony?

The United States: ¥4,064.4 billion, or 32.6% of FY2025 sales. China (¥1,428.7 billion) overtook Japan (¥1,333.2 billion) in FY2025, per Sony’s Form 20-F.

How big is Sony’s image sensor business?

Imaging & Sensing Solutions posted ¥2,151.5 billion in FY2025 sales and a record ¥357.3 billion in operating income. Sony forecasts slightly lower mobile-sensor sales in FY2026, citing memory-market conditions.

Will the Kumamoto earthquake hit Sony’s earnings?

Unknown for now. Sony excluded the impact of the July 28, 2026 earthquake from its FY2026 forecast because it could not reasonably estimate it. The next test is Q2 FY2026 results.

Methodology

Collection. Every figure comes from Sony primary documents fetched and read on September 29, 2026: the FY2025 results presentation (Form 6-K, May 8, 2026), the Q1 FY2026 results presentation (Form 6-K, July 31, 2026), the Form 20-F for the year ended March 31, 2026, and Sony’s March 31, 2026 press release on the TCL partnership. No secondary aggregator is used as a source.

Fiscal calendar. Sony’s FY2025 runs April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026. FY2024 figures are Sony’s re-presented continuing-operations numbers.

Axis calculations (flagged axis_calculated = yes in the CSV):

  • USD equivalents = yen figure ÷ Sony-disclosed period-average rate.
  • Segment operating margin = segment OI ÷ segment sales.
  • Ex-FX change = (current − prior − Sony-disclosed FX impact) ÷ prior.
  • CEPS = (G&NS + Music + Pictures OI) ÷ five-segment OI × 100.
  • Regional growth and share from Sony’s yen-million 20-F table.

Segment sales include intersegment transactions, so segment totals do not sum to consolidated sales. Sony’s FX impact is its own estimate; the ex-FX figures inherit its method.
